My Dad played this and sang it to me christmas day 8 days later he lost his fight against Cancer he was only 65 ,five months later my sister died suddenly at 46 two yrs ago lost my mum My only other family live in England This song means the world to me Jenny Guernsey 🇬🇬 ♥ ❤
this song reminds me of a girl i met on a train. We were both hours from our destination, it was night time and we couldn't sleep. We talked til the sun came up. Describing our likes or dislikes, arguing our favorite movies and music..Laughing.. Even debating on life and love. She was amazing. When the train arrived at her stop we exited holding hands and shared a kiss... I was weightless. She asked me to stay, to not get back on that train. Ill never forget her
1965 was my senior year in HS. I had a huge crush on the most beautiful school in our school. I knew her casually, we kinda ran in same circles. She seemed unattainable to a somewhat shy kid like me. Her parents had money and my mine had none. I desperately wanted to ask her out on a date, but never could sum up the courage to ask her out. Her rejection would have crushed an already shy kid like me. She was off to college in the fall after graduation and me , having no money for college , joined the Marines and off I went to Parris Island and eventually to Vietnam. Never saw her again. From time to time I would think about her and wondered what happened to her. A few years later I ran into a girl from high school and I brought up her her name up. Turns out the girl I dreamed about had died of a stroke at a young age. The girl I was conversing with mentioned that my “ crush” had always wondered why I never asked her out for a date. I was stunned. Back then I had “let my chance go by”. After the Marines I entered college, after that a very successful business career. Married, have a wonderful family and retired in 2013. But from time to time I still think of her and curse myself for not asking her out.
What a fabulous singer and song. Hey Jordan, you're loving the wrong woman. And thanks to whoever posted this video. I loved this song when I was a teenager, way, way back when.
In my opinion, Ray Charles, Elvis Pressley, and Johnny Cash are on a level by themselves when it comes to American Music, True American Legends and Treasures whose music shall live for enternity!
I came downstairs at 2:10 am, here in South Carolina, and this song just came into my mind and I started singing it. I had to "fire up" my laptop" so I could hear Ray Charles sing it the way it is suppose to be sang.
WIllie's cut is up to 5MILLION views. He was close friends with Cindy Walker, from Mah-hay-yah, Tx (Mexia), did an album of her songs. Video shows Willie on his bus, mellow, close to the end of his career. Emotional. And, he also recorded with Ray, who I think would have approved.
Sad to admit, but I was born in 1955,which means I am 61 yrs old,...but that's not even the sad part(LOL!!)...the sad part is that only since the past year or so have I truly begun to appreciate such beautiful music!!! I've discovered that I LOVE orchestra and the "crooners" of blues and soul!!! I believe part of the reason was because my life had been so chaotic and stressful , that I never felt I had the time to just STOP and let my heart and soul absorb the BEAUTY that artists such as this had to offer. Then developed stage 3 breast cancer a couple of yrs ago (completely cancer free as of now!) and it certainly did STOP me and made me re-evaluate , not just MY life...but LIFE in general!! Talk about "Blessings in Disguises!!!"
+Gloria Mary Haywood Ah, Miss Gloria, I hear you; I'm born in 1957 and it takes a loooong time, I think, to understand and APPRECIATE the finer things in life, right?
I defy anyone who considers themselves human to listen to this performance without a lump in their throat. This is Ray's song, no one else could ever do it justice. The plaintiveness and the anguish are simply overwhelming. For me, this is one of the all-time top 100 songs/performances. Pure genius.
You give your hand to me And then you say, "Hello." And I can hardly speak, My heart is beating so. And anyone can tell You think you know me well. Well, you don't know me. (no you don't know me) No you don't know the one Who dreams of you at night; And longs to kiss your lips And longs to hold you tight Oh I'm just a friend. That's all I've ever been. Cause you don't know me. (no you don't know me) For I never knew the art of making love, Though my heart aches with love for you. Afraid and shy, I let my chance go by. A chance that you might love me too. (love me too) You give your hand to me, And then you say, "Goodbye." I watched you walk away, Beside the lucky guy Oh, you'll never ever know The one who loved you so. Well, you don't know me (For I never knew the art of making love, ) (Though my heart aches with love for you. ) Afraid and shy, I let my chance go by. A chance that you might love me too. (love me too) Oh, you give your hand to me, And then you say, "Goodbye." I watched you walk away, Beside the lucky guy Oh, you'll never ever know The one who loved you so. Well, you don't know me (you don't love me, you don't know me)
I heard this song while I was watching Groundhog Day on Tuesday. No one writes or performs anything close to the emotional quality of this anymore. Ray Charles is just amazing
How can this song ever get a single thumbs down??? Goes to show some people don't have a clue on what good music is....What a lost generation of people these days.....
Beautiful selection. Ray Charles have some music worth listening to even now. It lives on with his talents he was Blessed with. Ray your presence may not be visible but your spirit lives on in your music. Thanks for sharing your precious life with us.
Priceless clip. I was lucky enough to see him live three times in London uk . So many 60s uk bands admit they were heavily influenced by him. He was a bit of a rascal with the girls but tell who sings better --- I think no one.
On this day in 1962 {July 22nd} "You Don't Know Me" by Ray Charles entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #56; and on September 2nd, 1962 it peaked at #2 {for 1 week} and spent 11 weeks on the Top 100... And on August 19th, 1962 it reached #1 {for 3 weeks} on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Tracks chart... The record's B-side, "Careless Love", also made the Top 100, it peaked at #60 and stayed on the chart for 4 weeks... The original version of the song by Eddy Arnold peaked at #10 in 1956 on Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart... Elvis' version reached #44 in 1967 on the Top 100, it was the record's B-side, and the A-side, "Big Boss Man", peaked at #38... In 1981 Mickey Gilley's covered version reached #1 {for 1 week} on September 13th on the Country Singles chart {#55 on the Top 100}... The week that Mr. Charles' version was at #2 on the Top 100, the #1 record was "Sheila" by Tommy Roe...
This song touches me and breaks my heart at the same time, these days are gone and if the industry (notice I left out the word music) continues the way it is going then your kids kids probably wont even know what a piano sounds like, let alone heartfelt music like this. I'm exaggerating of course however it's not so far from the truth, make it your personal missions to keep real music and musicians alive.
that guy, Sinatra, had a Amazing sense of things, Italians don't say something unless they mean it,, and of course i mean REAL Italians. (don't confuse us with gangsters)... Sinatra was the one who insisted Sammy Davis sing with him and they treat him right,, (lol, an offer you can't refuse). What he did for Sammy was Really honestly commendable. he didn't want his talent to be lost because back then,, im not even sure they could stay in the same hotel. people would be surprised to know how hard it was for black entertainers to get ANY real success back then. Sammy started as a Great Tap dancer with his father and uncle working black clubs.... Sammy influenced Michael Jacksons dancing alot. and even a step further,, Michael Jackson was the FIRST black singer to be 'allowed' on MTV,, crazy right..
Ray is the Name of the Man who wrote this song , The one who sung it , the one who was once alive in the flesh but always alive in our hearts and hopefully in Heaven. ..Ray Charles you still touch people with your music even ! still ! to this Day and that's a real accomplishment . You inspire me because that's how I want to impact the world too ....so , long after I'm gone they will remember me and I can still inspire and touch people's hearts even long after God takes me home . Peace and God Bless to All of you readers of this comment and to the rest of the world and to Ray Charles and family.
True brother Ray was and still is a true inspiration but he did not write this epic song. It was legendary country artist Cindy Walker who penned this, along with hundreds of others. Credit where credit is due.
I can;t speak... words can't decribe what Ray brings to this song... how can one man sing my pain... when I can't even describe it myself... it's not just the words... it's... the pain he sings,,,
My Mum and Dad's song, tears flow as I see them doing the creep around our living room, empty as they were decorating, floorboards, stripped wall paper ankle deep and so much love.
Were you a young child at the time? I can so appreciate your response to the song now and am laughing at the way young children can so completely misinterpret things. When I was little, Eddie Fisher's "Oh, My Papa" was big. I very much associated it with my daddy. It wasn't until many years later that I learned the song expressed sadness at death of a beloved father.
Laurie Abramson ,I was probably between 10-12 and it was the early 1970s. I cry every time I hear it but no sadness just pure joy knowing how much they loved each other. Sadly my Dad passed 7 years go and my Mums broken heart will never mend.
I'm right there with you in terms of Oh, My Papa. Even though I later understood its meaning, I still associate it with my father when I was little more than a toddler. The memory makes me laugh and cry at the same time. I hope that your Mum has many smiles and much laughter to balance the sadness. It's clear that she and your Dad infinitely enriched each other's lives, you being the greatest evidence. I'm wishing you good things ahead.
We're going off on a completely different track, but you reminded me of a heart- and mind-opening poem, easy to find on the internet, that I think will be significant to you: "Epitaph" by Merrit Malloy. With that, I bid you "Adieu." All the best for the year ahead.
Ray Charles in Sao Paulo, Brazil '63 "Ô-Genio" A very rare 1963 performance in Sao Paulo/Brazil, recorded one day before his 33rd birthday on "Teatro Cultura Artística" at the "TV Excelsior". Beyond its historical significance, the video provides enormous pleasure.
People don't perform music this good any more and never will again I'm afraid and I wasn't even alive when he performed his song. There is nothing like the classics that if for damn sure.
To rrtallon: Vintage Ray Charles! In my opinion no one else does this song justice. This kind of soul and passion can only come from someone that's been through something in their life. Unfortunately I never had the opportunity to see him in person You'll have that memory forever
Remember people didn't like Ray Charles @ the time the song came to be. So what! Remember Ray is Ray because more people loved him then didn't. He experienced so much as a blind artist in America do you think he would care. He would move on like he did then. So if you love it, love it and let your soul reflect your passion of love for this song and how it makes you feel. I let my tears flow when I hear it. My insides are full with raw emotion. I feel deeper when I hear the lyrics.
On the Grand Strand here and started singing it and had to do the same thing! One of the best songs ever, could listen to it forever! God Bless you where ever you are in SC! Saw your post and had to comment :)
Ray Charles the Master his entire life. This man can do more with one note than most performers can do with an entire song. Good when he was young, great when he was old. Only one "Genius". RC, "Brother Ray".
Eddy Arnold had the concept for "You Don't Know Me" and the great Miss Cindy Walker wrote this amazingly beautiful song from that concept. Ray Charles' version of it has always been my favorite.
this song has always comforted me during troubled times. It speaks to the soul and says everything for every person that has ever loved someone and has to realise that the person they love is fake and just another in a long line of dissapointments. Cheers to great music and true blues
My all time favourite from Ray, second Careless love..Bought the single 1962, the flip side was Careless love. Never got tired of them. Thanks Mr. Ray Charles. RIP PS. That was in Hamburg, also saw him life in the Star Club. It was tremendous, 30 Piece orchestra and the Ray lets. He also played Alto Saxophone in an instrumental, excellent musician, virtuoso on the piano. Will never be forgotten, his music will live on. Thanks for that !!!
Sometimes a song and an artist hit you right where you live. I've loved this song for more than 50 years, and foolishly somehow never thought it would someday apply to my life. Well, boys and girls...bullseye.
in the original vinyl, when he says "but you don't know me" for the first time in the song, it has a lot of power inside of it, and I think it really captures the essence of the song...its like, beautiful pain. ..."There is melancholy in the wind and sorrow in the grass" (Charles Kuralt).
Even through this crappy computer, the tone from that fantastic instrument shines through. This clip has all the great ingredients ,..The caucasion Lyrics, and chord structure , The black soul and blues feel, and that voice, and that playing ! Phew !. A similar clip is " James Brown Prisoner of love"
This changes with me from week to week, but right now I feel this is the best song ever! I love this live version - I don't miss the schmaltzy backing vocals of the original, but I do like the strings of that version. This is SOUL!!

I don't remember even how many times I've hummed (and occasionally sing according to the hour) this song last year, on my 40-50 minute way back to home from the centre of the city after a night of partying...Not quite what you'd expect in that situation. Luckily, at least once in my life, my story turned out perfect in the end. Yet I'm thankful for knowing Ray Charles to help me get past those hard times, he's truely THE Genius.
You give your hand to me And then you say goodbye I watch you walk away Beside the lucky guy You'll never know The one who loves you so Because you don't know me. Now my heart is beating listening to this beautiful, and sad song.
I've been a lifelong sucker for this beautiful song, and Ray's versions have drawn me even closer to this song. Really love this live version as a counterpoint to his 'Modern Sounds' version. More personal and poignant, imo.
A dead song, from a long and forgotten man. sad to think how many will never have the pleasure to feel the soul and the raw emotion you can feel from him... makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck. instead, the lucky few who know are left here to cherish the talent the man had and have the wonderful pleasure to hear a true musician, rest in peace Ray Charles, some of us will always remember you and the blues, real music.
One of the most romantic, heartbreaking songs of all time.....
Here here
My Dad played this and sang it to me christmas day 8 days later he lost his fight against Cancer he was only 65 ,five months later my sister died suddenly at 46 two yrs ago lost my mum My only other family live in England This song means the world to me
Jenny Guernsey 🇬🇬 ♥ ❤
Yes, it is, and it probably speaks to each of us.
@jenny4204 I bet this song brings a tear or two for you as it does for me. Charles sings it with poignancy.
The very definition "beautiful sadness".
Goddamn I love Ray Charles' music.
He was untouchable.
So beautiful
You know you're at legend status when live version sounds better than album version
lance evans right!
Yeah man. Ray’s backup singers always took away from the quality of the songs he recorded, imo
Live is better unless the artist sucks. In a nutshell.
the good ones....it always is that way
lance evans : yep

Before Sunrise vibes!😊
1965 was my senior year in HS. I had a huge crush on the most beautiful school in our school. I knew her casually, we kinda ran in same circles. She seemed unattainable to a somewhat shy kid like me. so good i feel so lucky listening to this masterpiece

You missed Louis Armstrong
Don't forget hank Williams, Robert Johnson an the all the cats from the Delta
BB King too
Elvis my favourite artist, love Ray Charles but always thought Cash was overrated?
Stevie wonder
That voice, how can anybody not catch fire and slowly melt?
This version is so pure and soulful, it hurts me. In the best of ways.
The greatest of the greats...and America's greatest musical gift to the world.
I came downstairs at 2:10 am, here in South Carolina, and this song just came into my mind and I started singing it. I had to "fire up" my laptop" so I could hear Ray Charles sing it the way it is suppose to be sang.
NO ONE and I mean NO ONE cant do this song better then Ray
Well, Norah Jones isn't half bad... but perhaps I agree for the most part
Michael Grimm is a beast on this song
lol, I pitty the ones who´ve tried
WIllie's cut is up to 5MILLION views. He was close friends with Cindy Walker, from Mah-hay-yah, Tx (Mexia), did an album of her songs. Video shows Willie on his bus, mellow, close to the end of his career. Emotional. And, he also recorded with Ray, who I think would have approved.
he is the best
That first "And I can hardly speak" ahh just pure soul.
He was out of this world...............
Makes a tear come to my eye
Ray captures the pain in the song - and I feel it so deeply.
I concur , all of his slower songs have this deathly , funeral home tempo.
Gloria Mary Haywood You must look for a Dinah Washington song called "Romance in the Dark" and Nina Simone's "Either Way I Lose" and "Do I Move You"
May I say...becomming a certaint age is fucking cool!! Don't you understand thats its you, having exaped death over and over again. How cool is that?
Legend!!!! Can anyone else do what this man's voice doe's to you??? There are no words!!
There's more emotion in the little cry at 2:30 than a million words. Ray Charles is the only one who can express something so vividly without words.
The way he slows down the lyrics at the beginning. "You give ...your......hand..." Genius.
Perfect song, perfect execution. Damn I wish Ray were still here with us.
If you do not like this, well, you and I - we cannot be friends!
There are family members I love less than this song- we'll b fine
Mark Barnett damn skippy brother!. I think that says it very well.
I defy anyone who considers themselves human to listen to this performance without a lump in their throat. This is Ray's song, no one else could ever do it justice. The plaintiveness and the anguish are simply overwhelming. For me, this is one of the all-time top 100 songs/performances. Pure genius.
How does someone dislike this amount of perfection?
You give your hand to me
And then you say, "Hello."
And I can hardly speak,
My heart is beating so.
And anyone can tell
You think you know me well.
Well, you don't know me.
(no you don't know me)
No you don't know the one
Who dreams of you at night;
And longs to kiss your lips
And longs to hold you tight
Oh I'm just a friend.
That's all I've ever been.
Cause you don't know me.
(no you don't know me)
For I never knew the art of making love,
Though my heart aches with love for you.
Afraid and shy, I let my chance go by.
A chance that you might love me too.
(love me too)
You give your hand to me,
And then you say, "Goodbye."
I watched you walk away,
Beside the lucky guy
Oh, you'll never ever know
The one who loved you so.
Well, you don't know me
(For I never knew the art of making love, )
(Though my heart aches with love for you. )
Afraid and shy, I let my chance go by.
A chance that you might love me too.
(love me too)
Oh, you give your hand to me,
And then you say, "Goodbye."
I watched you walk away,
Beside the lucky guy
Oh, you'll never ever know
The one who loved you so.
Well, you don't know me
(you don't love me, you don't know me)
I know the feeling
Thanks.
Those bluesy feels on piano , combined with the song's melody and words, make me melt.
We might not have met, but the only guy who i can share my sorrows and agonies with, love you Ray your always in my heart!!
I heard this song while I was watching Groundhog Day on Tuesday. No one writes or performs anything close to the emotional quality of this anymore. Ray Charles is just amazing
India Arie ... she has some serious soul!
There will NEVER be another Ray,
How can this song ever get a single thumbs down??? Goes to show some people don't have a clue on what good music is....What a lost generation of people these days.....
They could at least autotune this crap recording
Heartbreaking and beautiful. A song that most people can listen to and think "Yup. I've been there. I know that feeling." Masterpiece!
❤❤1959 I met my first love Earl this song brings back so many memories 😢 RIP
One of the greatest voices ever in the genre! Man, but wouldn't it be cool to have a voice like that!? To be able to sing like that!? Damn.
Now this is REAL MUSIC!
There will never be another classic n timeless artist like Ray Charles...
2 Unlimited is better
possibly the greatest love song ever written
Beautiful selection. Ray Charles have some music worth listening to even now. It lives on with his talents he was Blessed with. Ray your presence may not be visible but your spirit lives on in your music. Thanks for sharing your precious life with us.
@JCast60 Yes,you are so right. Who around today could come anywhere close to this soulful brilliance?
Quite magnificent, but then that's Ray Charles!
Priceless clip. I was lucky enough to see him live three times in London uk . So many 60s uk bands admit they were heavily influenced by him.
He was a bit of a rascal with the girls but tell who sings better --- I think no one.
lol,, Ray loved women, no question there.

Hermosa composición y bella melodía con la voz y estilo del inolvidable Ray Charles !❤
Ray was the MAN.
Nobody sings it like Ray.
Wish I could have seen him live but so glad for You Tube videos.
Somebody else may have said it, but I'll say it again: this doesn't need a "like" button. It needs a "love" button.
I think it's on Ray Charles 1963 - Live In Brazil. Everyone takes a back seat to Ray.
In the whole of the universe there will never ever be another Ray Charles.
A great song performed by a great musician. As Frank Sinatra once said: "There's only one genius in this business, and it's Ray Charles."

Oh how I miss you Ray, the greatest of all time!!! God rest your incredible soul!
An American Icon. Jon Kindley said it best "Perfect song, perfect execution. Damn I wish Ray were still here with us."
I love this song so much , not everyone but a lot of ppl experiences what he's singing about

Ray Charles is a national treasure. Anyone critical of this performance does not have a musical soul.
im 22old and say: this is music!!!!
shows your intelligence..
This man was and always will be a true legend.Great voice great lyrics and truly great delivery

People don't perform music this good any more and never will again I'm afraid and I wasn't even alive when he performed his song. There is nothing like the classics that if for damn sure.
This song has an incredible amount of soul in it.
Live in São Paulo, Brazil - September 22, 1963
broadcasted by TV Excelsior and recorded one day before Ray's birthday
I was 9 years old, living in Pasadena, California, when I heard ths on the radio. I loved it then, and now, 51 years later, I still love it!
something always gets into my eyes, every time that i listen to this song
Soooooo much soul, man.
He is the man and truly a genius
Love love love this song!!! Musical genius! R.I.P Mr. Charles
God Damn. Really you can't say anything else about how great this is.
I'm tellin' ya once, I've told you twice, I've written it thrice... Ray Charles was IT, man!
You can only feel this through your soul. Thank you for sharing.
😎
To my mind this is Ray's most moving song. It tears me up every time I hear it. One of the all-time greats. RIP, King Ray.
Websters dictionary could'nt print words to describe this brilliance.
My all time favourite from Ray, second Careless love..Bought the single 1962, the flip side was Careless love. Never got tired of them. Thanks Mr. Ray Charles. RIP
PS.
Heard Brooks & Dunn sing this, so had to come & hear Mr. Ray Charles, the master of soul himself. -of course.
Sometimes a song and an artist hit you right where you live. I've loved this song for more than 50 years, and foolishly somehow never thought it would someday apply to my life. Well, boys and girls...bullseye.
Lo mejor que en años he podido escuchar.
It never gets old...
Maybe Uncle Ray's very best single from the very best album EVER recorded "Modern Sounds In Country And Western Music"
This is what it's all about - what high art is all about - can't help rocking in my desk chair with tears welling up in my eyes.
in the original vinyl, when he says "but you don't know me" for the first time in the song, it has a lot of power inside of it, and I think it really captures the essence of the song...its like, beautiful pain.
..."There is melancholy in the wind and sorrow in the grass" (Charles Kuralt).
This generation of soul artists sang from the gut. What a great performance.
This dude might be the goat
This song hits a spot after what I've been through yesterday
this song is so sad. Anyone whose been in the 'just friends' situation can relate with this lovely song.
Heart and soul on top of HEART AND SOUL .... jam on in heaven with the choir you inspired Ray !
You give your hand to me
And then you say goodbye
I watch you walk away
Beside the lucky guy
You'll never know
The one who loves you so
Because you don't know me.
Now my heart is beating listening to this beautiful, and sad song.
vanislefan I hear you, friend.
but you don't know me...
pure musical brilliance.
I've been a lifelong sucker for this beautiful song, and Ray's versions have drawn me even closer to this song. Really love this live version as a counterpoint to his 'Modern Sounds' version. More personal and poignant, imo.
Brilliant, one of the greatest singers of our time.
He’s never sang a song the same way again. Unbelievable he sings it the way it feels that very moment
Such a beatiful and touching song... Ray C!!! is so fantastic on the piano ... thx
