Very impressed with your Just Tempered intonation revolution. It makes for an extremely pure chord sound. Also I'm with the guy who said you should put your name in there somewhere. Lastly, I'd jack the price on these exclusive new guitars with the hybrid fretboards. :)
Your like a drug I can’t get enough of your videos bro, love the sound of this fretboard,I’m going to slowly tool up for my new found obsession and start building cgb guitars ,can I buy a kit of you to get me started Del ,I can’t stop thinking about this ,I’m hooked bad, cheers brother,
It's great to hear someone in the CBG world speaking the technical language of music! And no, I'm not at all knocking the vast majority of folks out there that have no idea what you are talking about. :) It seems to me that by moving the frets away from their just temperament that you would lose the main benefit of just intonation... sort of like making the frets "out of just" (instead of out of tune). So, wouldn't they fall into the category of notes that sound "horrible" as you have called the non-just notes? I don't see how you can split the difference, unless the sound difference is extremely subtle (hard to tell from a youtube video). LOVE the work you've done. Any chance you will create a 25 1/2 scale version for the Strat players out there? Keep up the awesome work!
I'm not sure, but I hypothesize that this fret spacing could solve the "out of tune" B string on all standard guitars. I've been switching the B string tuning for different songs all my life. If you're not sure what I'm talking about, Paul Davids's "Why didn't Frusciante tune his guitar?!" video covers it. And this fret spacing may cure it.
@@PuckettCigarBoxGuitar I love that you built a CBG for Tommy Emmanuel, and you and your son got to meet him. And you even got to jam with him. He's one of my favorite fingerstyle guitarists. You make great videos. Thanks for showing us all how to build these great guitars.
Sounds great!!! Love the explanation....next question....are you going to sell the templates again? If so, I am in ( rather than try to do it myself as I have one of your just intonation scales)
Daaayyuuumnn that thing sounds great. I'm making a banjo and would love to make it just tempered. Is there a way to figure out the fret spacing with a formula or is the best way to just use two templates and split the difference.
Hi Del, so basically we can get cents from here: i.stack.imgur.com/eMCQP.png for Just Intonation and Equal Temperament and take the mean value as the spot to place the fret in?
Scias this is not True temperament.... this is Just Intonation... combined with Equal Temperament which produces a “Just Tempered” effect... And because of the non linear fret spacing, not all chords will sound the same... so your kinda locked in to whatever Key your tunes to... modulation will sound “wrong”. Finally, you can change the tuning as long as you keep the same intervals (1/5/1)
So now that you've figured out this, now you'll have to start focusing your attention on pickup experimentation (ie. making humbuckers, single coils, induction pickups, coil splits, etc...). :-)
If Just Intonation is scaled for a specific KEY and Equal Temperament is the "standard compromise", when you split the difference and create Just Intonation, isnt that scaled for the same key you used for JI? In other words, wouldn't the diffence between the two be diffent with each key of JI when compared to ET?
Artisans have been and been again there and around it, factories still keep building guitars in the same way. This said I realize the lack of energy in the innovation factor from their part, finally would have been fear to show the result on 6 strings .
Hi Del. I’ve been playing guitar for ever and I’ve just heard of this through your videos. I play by ear and I’m telling you this Just intonation or in your case Just tempered jumps out at me. It’s beautiful. I also build CBGs and would love to fret to your measurements. Can you please make your template available as a download. Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺. Daryl.
Guzzo - all I have are my templates. originals. it's not hard to figure out especially if you have a good ear. start off with a light colored FRETLESS fingerboard.... tune up and "mark" with pencil directly UNDER the harmonics.... then cut frets slots and WALLAH !! you're "IN". that would be Just Intonation. then you just split the difference between equal temperament and just intonation to achieve JUST TEMPERED....
The difference between Just intonation and 12-TET on the major scale is significant. The major 3. is 13.5 too sharp in 12-TET and the major 6. is a staggering 15.5 cents too sharp. The beating on a C-major chord in 12-TET is really noticable when comparing to the true harmonic C-major chord in Just intonation. But Just intonation limits you to play in certain keys. Some others can't be used.. The higher the tuning (reference point for A4) the more shrill disharmonic nature of 12-TET stands out in the mix. Tune your A4 to 430Hz. You still have the funky intervals but this lower tuning seem to hide these impurities a little better..
equal temperament certainly is more versatile and forgiving... a must for jazz. but if you want perfect sounding chords you’ll need to detune or alter somehow to compensate. i actually prefer equal temperament when i’m jamming...
“I can’t put this thing down.” ... ... ... proceeds to put the thing down.
I’m addicted to your videos. Keep them coming.
Your are gifted Puck unique mind awesome sounds as usual.
Del, the" just tempered " sounds great .
Sounds SO GOOD

Great videos man. I'm from Quebec, Canada. How do I get my hands on the "just tempered" ???

When has the word "just" ever spoken more volumes!
So how do I get a copy of the just tempered feet layout? I'm building my first 3 string and am enjoying your tutorials
Brilliant! Want on this ship.
Certainly sounds good.
I need one of these Del!
So it's meantone but for guitars? Nice!!
Nice great work
Double neck, Cigar boxes. One tuned traditional, one tuned to Harmonics. Then add a Harmonica.

Are you selling the Just Tempered templates

Pozdrawiam Polskiego cbg konstruktora
Sounds great. Does that work on six string as well?
How can I do that on the ones I build
GBG or EDE? Stap two guitar boxes together. Problem solved.
With harmonicas I think they call this compromise tuning, between equal and just.
Can you apply this principle to a 6 string 25" scale length guitar fretboard?
Correct me if I'm wrong but i thought you could change key/modulate as much as you want on true temperament frets, you just can't change the tuning
Scias this is not True temperament.... this is Just Intonation... combined with Equal Temperament which produces a “Just Tempered” effect... wow..you always keep surprising me .. :-)
he can play!
Sounds amazing. Is there a pattern available yet?
CMBGuitars I created a template :-)
Awesome idea. Are they for sale or online somewhere?
I want one!
I don't find it on the cmbguitar Facebook page
Sell the template. I would love to have one in my build space!
I don't have a JUST TEMPERED template for sale. I use one of my EQUAL TEMPERED templates marked with the offsets
So now that you've figured out this, now you'll have to start focusing your attention on pickup experimentation (ie. making humbuckers, single coils, induction pickups, coil splits, etc...). :-)
Fun & Eclectic sounds complicated... I need simplicity 😎
Puckett Cigar Box Guitar Funny, as much as I like your videos and what you are trying to teach, I often say the same, exact thing. 😉

Rob Disco it definitely leans toward ET.. but still delivers the richness of JI . Sorta the best of both worlds so to speak
how much for a finished fret board?
shuckarelli email me for details...

Nice :)
Mad Scientist?
Yet another guy that think equal temperament is wrong, its very simple its equally "wrong" in all keys, that why it works.. thats the whole idea!
equal temperament certainly is more versatile and forgiving... a must for jazz. but if you want perfect sounding chords you’ll need to detune or alter somehow to compensate. i actually prefer equal temperament when i’m jamming...
