Those new roots are water roots btw. Those roots will not rot. Plants shed off the soil roots when transferred to leca/water. Soil roots are the ones that rot with too much water. With these new roots, you'll notice the roots will get fuzzy in order to attach to the leca. You're doing great. That Thai Con is going to thrive now! I've transferred almost all my plants to leca ☺
After dealing with this same issue myself (my healthy tc got root rot after i repotted in terrible soil mix bc I was lazy to make my own, ugh), it's better to chop off as much of the old root as possible, like way past where it is rotting. I soaked the remaining root stubs in a solution water and 3% hydrogen peroxide for 10mins, rinsed it and put into water. I did this and it grew some new roots in a couple weeks, and so I decided I would pot it up (no soil! only coco chips, rice husk, fine orchid bark, pumice stone and charcoal). That was on Tues, and I just checked today (Sat) and omg roots are exploding out everywhere. I think the hp really kills the bacteria and stops the rot from spreading. I also watered a couple times with Seasol Powerfeed, a seaweed based fertilizer that focuses on root growth. There's many other root growth solutions out there, you should try some (like Root Roids, from Australia as well) to encourage huge root growth. When the roots are strong and healthy, everything else falls into place. I honestly felt like giving up when all its amazing roots were gone, and 3 out of 6 leaves yellowed and dropped off, but I got it as a baby for $30 last July as a birthday gift to myself, and I am glad I stuck with it. I think it looks like your tc has turned the corner and is on the right track to growing up big and healthy! Just keep changing the water as often as you can, and yeah hope you can update us again soon with more good news on your little guy. All the best!
Try to be gentle with the plant when extracting from the lecca! I've seen other youtubers dumping out the lecca into a bowl so the roots won't be damaged compared to pulling it out of the pot :)
YAY! So happy your Thai is doing better. Congrats! You have won the root rot battle! Also hoping you get that new leaf it looks like she is working on.
i think you’re on the right track! it’s actually fine or even good that you don’t have nutrients yet because ideally you want to give a plant a few weeks to get settled into leca and grow some new roots before you start adding nutrients. they can be a shock to the plant rather than a help if applied before the plant is ready. i still would recommend keeping the water level much much lower. i have many plants in semihydro, and even for the ones that are adjusted to it i only keep an inch or so of water in the bottom, and i let the reservoir dry up before i add more water. otherwise, in my experience, the risk of rot is much higher, even for plants that are used to semihydro.
I haven't used leca for my monsteras. Still debating. But, I like seeing others experiences with it! Thanks for sharing 😊 nice to meet another Canadian plant mama haha
I’ve just started with leca but from what I’ve learned in my research is that it’s perfectly normal for plants to shed an outer layer of roots when transferred to leca. Yay to new root growth! 🎉
Loved the video! I am a bit scared, as I wait, not so patiently for my Thai Constellation to arrive from Thailand! So worried, and I am a new plant mom. I've loved watching your progression with yours!
I have heard you can wait till your plants gets thirsty, before filling the reservoir when transitioning it. I could imaging it could help preventing the root rot to spread.
I would ask minimalistic cali, thats her channel. She has transferred all her house plants to Lecca and I think she would be the best person to ask any questions for help. Shes pretty knowledgeable.
Hey Fern, I’ve just bought this all in one fertilizer for semi hydro: liquid gold leaf. It wasn’t that expensive and it’s supposed to be a one step fertilizer. Maybe you could check it out.
Hello, i also have bought liquid gold leaf. When i use it for propagations, there is a strange residue on the surface, which gets some (fungus?) spots, as it really warm right now. Do you have the same problem. I am afraid my leca will have this stuff on it.
We are on the same stage in our lecca journey! I just put a Peru in leca from soil because it wouldn’t stop rotting. It’s doing so much better! I haven’t added any nutrients in it either. Do you know what you plan on buying?
I have my tree philodendron in LECA. it does have some dead roots, but in scared to cut them off because the new roots have grown off of the dead looking ones, so idk. Your plant looks happy to me. I just try to change out the water more often, since my container has no drain hole and the roots r sitting in water 95% of the time 😬
I actually started using LECA because my husband used it to grow cannabis. His plants were amazing, so i knew it was going to be a good option. I’ve also had really good luck propagating cuttings in it.
I put my Thai in leca bc is hated soil. And now I have like all plants in leca 🤷🏽♀️😂 But yeah some plants get dead roots when transferring to leca. I cut them off bc they can make other roots rot and the water gets really nasty when there is still dead roots in the pot! So you are doing great 👌🏻
Did your plants also lose their leaves? I’ve started transferring some to LECA and some have adapted well, but one alocasia is dropping and I’ve had to cut off 2 leaves already. Do you have any tips for me? Thanks :)
Such a great metaphor to our lives. We can think things have gotten so bad. Trials in life. Rotted. BUT then there's growth and healthy roots that show up. New things. I thank our creator for that. 🌿🙏🌄
It's a year since you made this video and I need mega help with my TC. Wouldn't stop root rotting even after treating with hydrogen peroxide. So upset. Now I have 2 very weak leaves left and 75% yellow. Going to try leca and pray.
@@DalilahBlevins My overseas Thai was suffering from root rot in soil. Just a cycle of getting well then root rot etc. Leca has been consistent growth and eliminates root rot altogether.
Also - the pot you have the monstera in, I have a similar pot and have a small fern in it & it is definitely not thriving! Then I saw you have your monstera within a growing pot and have that inside the ceramic pot. Is that my issue? Having it in the ceramic pot by itself?? I'm scared I may have killed it!
Bonjour Fern,do what You want, what feels good to You...Personally I would cut the rotted ones...try to sort of " Refresh it "...It would be okay eventually don't worry 😉🍃🌱🌿
The planty youtuber "My Clean Leaves" (I think that's the right name - not 100% sure) does leca a lot she would be a good resource to go to for questions. 😊😊😊
I’d probably avoid pulling the plant out from the leca and instead pour some of the leca balls out with the plant to make sure you don’t accidentally break any new roots that may be attached to leca balls 💕
I wouldn't think that just pulling the plant or of Lecca would be good. All I've seen when they change the lecca is dumping it away from the roots. I've been doing lots of research to start converting a few of my plants.
Do not use liquid fertilizer with leca. It will ovewhelm/overfed the plants. If you want to feed it with fertilizer it should be in short time only between 30mins-2hrs I guess. 😇
Watch Pretty in Plants on UA-cam! I have transitioned all of mine using her method and they have all been thriving. I suggest watering your plant through. *Don't leave the water in the pot.* Then let the plant sit for seven days and repeat this until you see even stronger water roots. It works! I promise!
Awesome thank you so much!!! 👏
Why you prefer leca to soil?
@@hola-rk3lr they basically water and feed themselves eliminating under or overwatering problems.
@@MikeSnedaker but if you know about plants that kind of things doesn’t happend… I don’t know if test leca or lechuza pon

I just started a couple plants in leca yesterday. It’s both exciting and scary at the same time.
I feel that!! I'm trying not to hover over it and pull it out of the pot all the time loool

What else can you do in leca? It seems really interesting (and on a small level it looks cool/aesthetically pleasing)
Thank you so much for this! I just bought leca!
So glad you went leca for your Thai. My Thai Constellation is thriving on leca and other plants as well.

You can try putting like a .5% concentration of hydrogen peroxide and let it sit for a few hours and that should help stop any more rot
I’d probably avoid pulling the plant out from the leca and instead pour some of the leca balls out with the plant to make sure you don’t accidentally break any new roots that may be attached to leca balls 💕
