- Pikmin 4 is here! And I'm recording my playthrough so I can chronicle my thoughts and reactions as they happen!
This episode sees us answering some questions that linger in the Sun-Speckled Terrace, places I had spotted but not yet explored... and just as many questions arise in the process, especially in a big cliffhanger at the end of the day!

nintendo pulled a cruel prank on everyone by making oatchi's swimming ability something you unlock and not mentioning that when they showed oatchi swimmimg in the trailers
Not only that, but you don't even unlock the ability until you try it and nearly drown Oatchi (and likely the Pikmin). They were counting on it!

@@moth2120 makes sense. I just think it is really funny that the game outright expects you to drown oatchi to progress before eventually giving up (6 days is a long time!)

a few tips based on this video:
- the survey drone from Russ is excellent for scouting out dandori challenges like you did
- dandori challenges only need to be passed (bronze medal) to rescue those leafy castaways that seem to have some sort of Dandori Issue. you won't be able to replay the challenges until a bit later in the game
- you can't enter any caves or dandori challenges during the sunset countdown; until then it's fine. if you spend long enough in a cave to reach the end of the day, the countdown will start the moment you leave
- Kingsly's quest is infinitely repeatable, meaning it's a renewable source of raw material like the dirt mounds in every area
- dandori challenges can eventually be replayed
- dandori challenges always reward 30 raw materials, regardless of medal

the beginning of the game does have a lot of text but double +/- skips anything immediately so i dont get why people get mad about that lol
Honestly I can confirm that you really want to raise Oatchi's buff skill as quickly as you can. It's the only way to grab the blue onion without going to another zone first.
Also RE: the notifications; I know some people find them annoying at first and preferred the simple music tune to inform you a task is done, but the notification system is absolutely vital for lategame and the dandori challenges. They will have you multitasking like crazy and knowing wether your pikmin have lowered that bag or finished carrying that pile of nuggets is the difference between a platinum medal and failure, so I really appreciate it.
25:46 The theme playing here indicates a powerful enemy. A powerful enemy is essentially just the tier below a mini boss, which is a tier below a boss enemy.

What I like about our leaf-covered friends' ID cards is that their home planet is "PNF-404". Yes, that's the name of the planet in the game but it can also be read as "ERROR 404 - PLANET NOT FOUND".
Could this serve as an in-canon explanation for why the Koppaites dubbed the planet PNF-404 later on as we know this game takes place before 2 and 3?

Not sure how much you're gonna be reading the comments this playthrough, but I just wanted to say to take note of the Voyage Log option in the pause menu. Anytime you enter a cave or encounter a new Pikmin type you'll be shown an entry from the Voyage Log, but sometimes it'll update by itself. It usually has some flavor text about the world and Olimar's expedition. It can be a lot of reading though so I wouldn't blame you if you did it off camera.
I knew the raw material thing was gonna happen lol. Been saying since episode 2 that scruffy had been ignoring piles upon piles of them hahah

This feels like the slowest playthrough of pikmin 4 but somehow... the most entertaining
WAIT I just realized the little characters in your thumbnails reflect what happens in the episodes! you care about details just as much as pikmin 4’s dynamic soundtrack
I don't know why it took me so long to come to this realization, but I've always thought of the different civilizations in Pikmin (only Hocotate and Koppai before 4) as completely seperately evolved species. I was super confused about 4 until I just realized it might just be a civilization so massive it spans across such vast enough amounts of space that are so sparsely populated or inhabitable that entire, but singular plantes' problems become a completely localized crisis, and with enough active travel that tons of people pick up thing's like Olimar's SOS signal.
Koppaites do seem to be a different species from Hocotations. But it's hard to say about any of the other planets or peoples
It is actually possible to get blue pikmin with 40 pikmin on field it just requires oatchi’s buff to be level 3
Requires some finicking, but it is technically possible i guess?
Even without oatchi you can use an ice blast and have just enough time for 40 pikmin to carry it across

@@weckar you have to cross the water no matter what, so you need to freeze it or carry it with characters that can transport things across water
@@ShuckleShellAnemia you can also drop it into the water and have Oatchi headbutt it all the way upshore. Takes the better part of an in-game day but hey, with some Dandori skills it can probably be pulled off with only 30 pikmins
what a killer ending to the day! i like to imagine it being like, olimar and moss dashing away into the underbrush, a place where you could totally follow, were it not for the imminent sunset. so there's just that tension of "it feels like we're letting this guy get away...."

Getting the blue onion with only 40 Pikmin is probably the most complicated puzzle this game offers.
I wish there were more like that tbh. Puzzles that encourage backtracking, but allow completion without it

This is the most unique gameplay I've ever seen of any game and it's all thanks to how much Scruffy is enjoying it and pointing out details
I've loved watching your playthrough of Pikmin 4 and your voice is really nice to listen to as well. One of my brothers came into my room while I was watching you and said you sound like an anime protagonist which I don't personally hear.

i literally had to pause the video because i remember having a dream about watching around 21:20 or so in this video. not just the media itself but whar i was doing and how i was feeling. the perspective and the roofless cave...

also i hope the trend of these episodes getting longer continues. i can imagine the "im sure it can be just a /little/ bit longer" is a very strong vibe with this game!
For the caves, there is actually a hard cap for the time you spend in a cave actually counting as time spent during the day.
Example: you are in one cave for more than an entire days worth of time, when you come out the cave, any time spent in the cave over the 10 second countdown will be completely ignored. So when you come out of a cave,, the 10 second countdown will begin immediately.
You can get the blue onion with only 40 pikmin! It requires throwing pikmin from a different side to get the onion.
Once the pikmin bring it to the area they get stuck at (the wind thing in the ground), use 30 ice pikmin to freeze the water, 10 pikmin to carry the onion and the dog with the upgraded skill of 10 carry weight!
You can also do this in the demo!

also, the fact youv already memorized enemy motifs so that you could instantly tell from the music that there was a bulborb is incredible
It’s about 30-40 hours long but with the way he’s playing it. I can see his play time easily going past 50. So don’t worry there’s plenty.
Heh, you put your quick D-Pad commands in the same way I did. Putting them in the same vein as the Y menu is just natural.
I love the humour here, that meme was neat :P and your reaction upon finding the red bush and the green dog was the best.
This series has given me so much calm in my life.
dont mean to backseat, but if i could make a recommendation: try putting "Switch" on the left stick and put the normal disband on down or up? "Switch" is going to be your most common used input if you are going for ultimate dandori.
also, disband and disband all both have their uses, as Disband will disband pikmin EXCEPT for the current type you have selected + oatchi. Disband All disbands every pikmin, including oatchi.
though fwiw disband all functionality can be replicated by just doing disband twice (bc disbanding if you have just 1 type of pikmin will just disband that type), so its not too useful.
i think you can only put commands on the left stick if youre playing with a single joycon
@@thatcloveplant no the blurb is just misleading, it's talking about binding to the "unspecified" stick, aka the only stick the sideways joycon has. Binding to the left stick works just fine for any normal controller.

Oh wow, I didn't even realize that you could just run out of Raw Material in caves. They're usually very good about providing all the amount you need on the floor where it's required.

I don't normally get motion sickness from video games, but all that dandori in the cave certainly made my head spin. Makes the leaflings more relatable lol.
I think you could've still grabbed that blue onion by whistling the ice pikmin and rushing towards the onion
In the demo i didnt realize you were supposed to charge into the can in hectic hollows, so i was throwing yellow pikmin upwards for about 15 minutes trying to get them to grab on, which did eventually work somehow. Man i felt dumb when my friends just told me to use the rush
I can't wait for you to encounter one of the bosses in this game, and I know you're going to LOVE it due to the musical build up for and around it. This is such a charming let's play you're doing, I simply love it.
31:10 if oatchi's carrying strength is 10, and you bring 10 of the ice pikmin with you, you can get the blue onion

watching this 8 months late but i love how this goes mostly unedited and then there’s just a random thing like 20:20 every once in a while
For the record, you can totally get the blue Onion in Sun-Speckled Terrace with only 30 or 40 Pikmin. Ice Pikmin float on the surface of water, so you can bring them over to the climbing wall to get them near the Onion, and then they take that air geyser back over the water. Alternatively, you can train Oatchi's Buff skill until he can carry a 10 Pikmin load, and once the Onion has been carried down the ledge by the Ice Pikmin, you can freeze the water again and have Oatchi help get it back to base. Also don't forget that the ice bombs freeze water for a short time too.
Pikmin only use the geyser when carrying single weight items like raw material or berries, anything else, like the onion, won't work.
for the hotbutton menu, you're also able to bind an action to pressing down the left stick
A lot of people press that by accident though. I can understand leaving it unassigned.
Not in his control setup. The screen says it only works in solo joycon mode.

@@weckar it’s worded in a confusing way but what it means is “the only shortcut that can be used in sideways joycon mode is the stick-click”, so 1 shortcut instead of 5. So it probably should have been worded “in sideways joy-con mode, only (symbol) shortcut can be used”.
I have “dismiss all” on my stick click and use it a lot, alongside the other shortcuts.

You can do some shenanigans to get the blue onion before getting 50 pikmin, by grabbing some ice pikmin and moving them up before the ice melts

That spending spree at the start of the episode was painful to watch... it was an uncharacteristically non-dandori move from Scruffy. But all the same, every mistake is an opportunity for further refinement!

Not gonna lie, I was expecting Scruffy to notice Olimar and Moss sooner while attempting to get the blue onion, but that reaction nonetheless is spectacular!
I'll be honest, I somehow managed to cheese my way into getting that blue onion with only 40. By moving fast enough I was able to freeze the water and then still get up the wall with the ice pikmin, meaning I had just enough to get the onion down to the lower ledge, then I could freeze the water again and use Oatchi with the level 3 buff and 10 red pikmin to pull the onion over the ice
Always a treat watching these vids on my long commute to work. love all the detail and things he has to say especially about the Dynamic music.
I wouldn't want to watch any other youtuber play this game. I love your attention and appreciation of details, can't wait to see more!

With how much Scruffy loves the Pikmin series, I'm suprised he recognized Olimar, but didn't piece together the connection to the Pikmin 1 bad ending. I haven't played the first game, but the moment I saw that leafy Olimar I thought of the bad ending.
probably be a good idea to learn another buff level for Oatchi. With a strength of 10, you should be able to get the blue onion with the 40 pikmin you can use.
Not that I'd take any kind of issue with you having criticisms of the game, but it really has been delightful just how smitten you are with every small detail of the game. It's made watching your reactions so much fun because I'm so used to cynical gamers griping about minor inconveniences instantly. I'm loving this playthrough so much!!
So funny thing about that Blue Onion, I had the same issue with only having 40 Pikmin as my total when I found it. What I did was your idea at the beginning of the episode: use an Ice Bomb and freeze the lake, and RUSH the HELL out of those Pikmin over the frozen water.
Watching Scruffy play Pikmin 4 is like experiencing the hype and excitement again from my first playthrough.

Here's a tip, you actually can get the onion with only a cap of 30. Throw all your pikmin, even the ice ones, over the wall next to it, if you look on the map you can see where. Then, let them drag it down near the water, where the geyser and spicy plant are. Once the onion is down there, put Oatchi on it and use the ice pikmin to freeze the lake. I forget if pikmin can carry an onion using an air geyser, but if they can do that then no ice needed.
you don't need a flarlic for the blue onion, here's how.
first you need to unlock swimming for oatchi
then you need to freeze the ice and build the wall.
grab the ice pikmin and hurry up the wall
bring the onion down to the spicy berry plant, and then you can leave with the geyser
next, get oatchi onto the platform and rush into the onion, moving it into the water.
keep repeating this, rushing and moving it slowly closer to the shore.
you'll do it.

you can also just spend the 2 pup drive points to get oachies carry capacity to 10 instead of having to charge into the onion over and over again.

The trick to getting the blue onion is to call the ice Pikmin, thawing the lake, transport it down to where Oatchi can get it, refreeze the lake, and carry it with just Oatchi and the red Pikmin
Hey, that leafling's stem was glowing like an idle pikmin's!
As for the flowers, I recommend using the "leave 'em in the ground" trick in the main area. After all, the onion's there. You can just pull out a single pikmin or ten, and use those to grow more sprouts until it won't let any more sprouts be planted. Then, just leave them in the ground until they flower. At that point, you can go ahead and pluck them before repeating the process.
Are you talking about in the hub areas? If so I question if they will flower since time doesn't move in the hub. Even if it does work I question if it is really worth the time to wait around just to flower a measly ten pikmin, especially when nectar/spicy spray is so easy to collect and will flower them instantly.
@@alaster555 Yeah, I'm talking about the main hub. And while time may not pass in the main hub itself, time does pass in the form of days. After all, pikmin don't progress except when fed nectar or left in the ground for an entire day. Meaning, every other day, you can get a total pikmin-flowered count of your available squad size on top of however many you've flowered by rushing them at nectar.
I beat the whole story without noticing how the music changes in response to enemy presence. Appreciate your perspective.

It’s nice to see someone as excited for all of the changes as I am, I was on the fence before the game released but Ive eaten my words since then
what i did to get the blue onion was to take the ice pikmin and get up before the ice broke and then carry the onion to the lower platform then freeze the water again and use buff lvl 3 oatchi along with the 10 pikmin left over to carry the onion back
