Sure, at first glance you may think it’s a regular family SUV, but once you peer a little closer, you’ll see there are a whole host of upgrades to be found! Starting with the outside, there are a number of styling updates to be found, from a roof spoiler & quad-tailpipes through to 21” alloys and tinted rear windows!
But of course, that’s not all. The interior is plastered with blue R stitching and badges, and once you peer under the bonnet, you’ll find a 2-litre 4 cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that delivers 320hp & 420Nm!

6:15 The Tiguan (R) comes with a wireless charging pad in Germany. It's just UK things. :)
Its typical, same things happen with Seat, new Cupras come with nice wheels and good spoiler + rear diffuser in spain. But not UK...
Guess it is what it is.
maybe its to compensate the price of having to do changes like changing the side of the steering wheel?
@@jh5kl I don't think thats a major issue consider they already have a well established production for RH drive.
But maybe its a factor.
We get wireless charging in the US but regular seats and no paint on the calipers just a flashy bumper and wheels. We also have the Atlas in R line here which is even larger than the Tiguan it’s ridiculous.

I love this car i got the regular one and i have no regrets at all. The color options are fantastic. Mine was moon grey everyone had been complimenting my car and it feels good. Also, the gas mileage is quite decent. Cant wait to see the next generation!

It has adaptive dampers, the ride is probably not that bad. I'd be far more worried about the eye watering replacement cost of damaged tires and/or wheels. Can you imagine hitting a pothole while on a roadtrip through middle of nowhere Kansas, Nebraska, Montana etc...and trying to find 21" tires (or heaven forbid replacement wheels) in the nearest small town? This is a VW crossover ffs, not a Bentley or Lambo.
Absolutely, I have an SEL tiguan on 18" rims, perfectly OK. And, not only the discomfort, I live in southern Scotland and the roads are crap, potholes everywhere, anything over say 19" you would be adding £1k every month to your motoring costs.

@@jbm0866 the older i get, i want the normal size wheels. imagine getting a nail on the sidewall.....gonna have to replace all fours cuz AWD. i can't see those tires being cheap....maybe $1300 to replace all four? ..no thanks. i wish they put the VR6 in the tiguan. i just love the sound of that engine. i drive like a old man but want to some power when i need to punch for some little fun around on some long straight aways

VW must really be underrating their hp numbers. 320hp doesn’t seem enough to push this through the 1/4 in 12.7!
I think he was a bit rough with the verdict. The Tiguan R is a great car! Comfortable when u aren't acting crazy, still an amazing family mid-size SUV, it has one of the bigger boots for this class of car, and it can go from 0-60 in under 4.5 seconds. and most importantly, all that for UNDER 50k. I think if u want a cheap-ish performance SUV, This is one of the best choices, if not THE best

As you have mentioned that extra weight affects the performance... I'm really interested in seeing how significant is the difference? Maybe launch an empty car then launch it again with about 250kg at the back

I suspect the extra weight and higher ride helps the Tiguan squat and put it's power down better than the golf, which might struggle for traction even though it's awd. In the end though the extra weight and bigger silhouette does make the Tiguan slightly slower. But I wouldn't be surprised if it beats the golf in the first 50 meters.
Mat, the cornering even on the standard Tiguan is amazing, I have a 2WD, and it grips so well at those speed like in the video and similar corners, and the car barely tilts, for an SUV, the cornering performance is amazing.
It's still way inferior to a car. Unless you need offroading capabilities, which I doubt any of the people who buy this do, why would you buy this?

It’s not an r line
I own a 1L Evo VW polo Beats 2020 which they now say has 80bhp rather than the older engines which have 60bhp. They’re top speeds are the same but think you should see for yourself what’s quicker! The newer polo’s are heavier tho as they have no design and are wider so will be great test to see 1/4 mile and second gear acceleration and even break! Hope to see this soon

Because you are watched throughout the world, and because you use 'specialist timing gear', is there any possibility that you could somehow provide the 0-100kph figures too?? I know that it's a bugbear of mine, but they are quite different to the 0-60mph. Let's face it, there are only two places in the world that really care about the latter...

Me too. I love it but coming from an S5, I miss my old gearbox. The tiguan doesn't optimize the revs and it lurches on the change downs.

Currently I owned 2020 Tiguan R-Line ( just cosmetic R...), but I am willing to upgrade to this if I can able to own it!!!
25.3mpg (9,3 l/100km) average for a 320hp petrol suv seems pretty all right to me, i've seen reviews of a forester hybrid averaging that, i even came across one that claimed to have gotten 21mpg...AND 4.2 seconds to 60 on a tiguan?? good enough for sure

I'd go with the Tiguan Sport instead, good saving over the R version but yet quicker than most compact SUVs

I'm sure the new seats VW are using for the GTI/R models etc are comfortable and supportive enough, but my lord do they look cheap and aftermarket compared to past seating in their top of range models. I get the rep damage caused by dieselgate spurred VW to go full woke in their efforts to work towards an all EV lineup and reduce the use of leather...but this just seems like cost cutting to me.

Price too steep for this and you bought an S3, which is an overpriced golf R. It does not get any cheaper for a performance SUV.

The wheels are so big that they make the brakes look tiny.
I always think less of people who put wheels that are too big for their cars and here's VW doing it from the factory.
The Tiguan R is a nice SUV but I don't think anyone will get this for £45k over cars like the Range Rover Velar.
Please do the eHybrid next!
