I inherited my Great Grand Father's original Glycine Airman from when he was i the Air Force. Had it fixed up and now it is running like a champ! Still has the original "hacking seconds" wire that stops the second hand from moving. Wouldn't trade it for anything.
A Glycine Airman Purist is pretty high on my list. Hoping to pick one up later this year! I love the combination of a GMT bezel with a 24 hour main hour hand. Such a simple but functional solution to tracking two timezones. And one of the most useful things with that method is that you can look ahead to see what time it will be in the second timezone in the future at a glance which is great for trying to schedule calls with friends in a different timezone. Just look at the time on the dial that you want to schedule something, and then look at the bezel to instantly see what time it will be in the second timezone.
To help, unfortunately the GMT version has a 12 hour dial and the hour hand rotates twice in 12 hours while the GMT hand rotates once every 24 hours. This is because the Purist has the hour hand on the GMT part of the GMT movement and the normal attachment is disabled.
Here's a tip on making it easier to read the PM time. Turn the bezel so the 24 hour position is at the bottom, opposite the 12. Now you can read the bezel, 1-12, when the hour hand is running between 13-24 on the dial.
You could imagine a Pilot with this new watch design on and every fifteen minutes asking His Co-Pilot, "Ere, You know what time it is?" I could live with one, on looks alone. Great show Jo, a beauty thanks.
THIS is how all watches should be! I live in my beloved European 24 hour system, and I HATE this AM/PM rubbish, and there were many times, when either appointments or alarm clocks went all wrong, because a nearly invisible "PM" dot, or somebody not being clear what time of day they wanted to meet!
So many variations of the Glycine Airman there's something for everyone's tastes. I scored my 2nd hand GL0063 for under NZ $500 , that's an ETA 2824-2 in a Swiss made watch. She's not my everyday work beater but my favorite for wearing during gaming. Stay safe and healthy in Qld Jody&co.
Just bought from Jomashop. Delivered to the UK including duty it cost me £350. Take £100 if you live in the US. Mine is 42mm with a leather strap. Can't wait for it to arrive
Considering that you just very recently convinced me to buy my first Casio in 20 years, I’m convinced you could sell me anything. But damn it all if that watch doesn’t just sell itself. Gorgeous.
I have been wearing a Breitling Navitimer Costume for years and have recently added a Breitling Avenger Hurricane 24 to my collection, this now being my daily wear. You would be surprised just how quickly you get use to the 24 hour dial, and it is certainly a conversation starter!!
A 24h watch is quite special, to read it is always fun. I love how it shows the pass of the day. And it really catches attention and starts conversations. This Glycine It´s a great watch, not only beautiful but with history, and the reedition is very well done. I always have loved it, If I don't have is because It's out of my price range. By the way, there is an affordable automatic 24h movement with date, a Vostok Komandirskie with 2431 movement that it's quite popular and not bad at all, It's a modern one with a steel case and 200m WR, (Amphibia case, actually). With the addition of a 24h bezel, you have a quite good "poor man's" GMT. Congrats!
Ha ha finally you review a watch I have no intention of purchasing this is a rare event… Probably because I bought it two weeks ago. It is a bit hard to tell the difference between the hands and if the hour and is off sync at all you will notice as there is so little space between the hours.
That watch has a modified ETA (their logo is on the main plate) 2892, as it is not a GMT movements, just one with a modification causing the hour hand to run at half speed. That movement is called a glycine something or other, is largely unmodified, and like a lot of other brands, it can be based on either a ETA 2892 or a Selita SW300, depending on their availability and pricing at that moment. If you are looking for watches with that function, by the by, that being a 24-hour layout, you can get a lot cheaper than that- Vostok makes them starting from about $75.
I don't think the image on the caseback is of the DC-4... you can see landing gear struts on either side of the engine and the cowling is wrong. I think it's just meant to be a generic 30s-40s fixed-gear single engine monoplane. Still pretty cool! I like the Airman a lot and have tried to play around with the watches and straps in my modest collection to get the "feel" of the Airman. I guess you could say it's one of my aspirational watches. Great review as always Jody, hope you're enjoying your vacation!
I own a Airman Base 22 Purist, black dial, and a "new look" Airman 44 GMT white dial, GL 0055, i fit on it a black leather strap "Airman". They are both wonderful. Not the Dc-4 but the "Noon" will be my third Airman asap. I own 5 Glycine in my collection !!
Love it, proper tool watch- don't even mind the cyclops, looks like a proper instrument. Thanks Wilco for letting us see it. I've got a vostok 24 h watch, but rarely wear it coz it's pretty inaccurate (like all Russian watches I've owned that haven't broke!) Hope you are having a good holiday. Cheers mate 👍🏻
Should have jumped at the chance to add one of these about a month ago, but I've been saving for a grail. Several US gray dealers had these in for less than $500 brand new.
Glycine watches are great value.I bought the Combat Chronograph .Swiss made, saphire crystal, screw down crown and pushers ,big day and date chronogrh, solid link bracelet with milled clasp and pvd coating( that seems unscratchable) for under $150.00 ! Love it!
I own this exact model, the DC-4 purist. I got mine on Ashford.com for $400. My favorite non-diver watch that I own. I also bought the Glycine book on the history of Airman model, every model made, really interesting.
Another great review, I have been looking at this brand for a while now , they have a few models ,not many detailed reviews like yours . Keep up the good work, I have pre-ordered 2 watches based upon your reviews,
I love this watch!!! It is different, looks to be well made, and should be a conversation starter! I know enough, just, to realize that Glycine makes very good watches. I think this might become my new grail watch. It’s different enough for me to never get another one like it... Great review as always Jody!!! Thanks for something to save my pennies for!
I had the pre-Invicta Base22 model, and now have the 18, which is smaller. Got the last one for 500 euros, almost brand new, at the time they were selling in mass the stock a couple of years ago.
I don't have this one, but I have FIVE different Glycines 😳😱 Absolutely love every one. Two quarz and three autos - moon phase, gmt, and a Valjoux powered chronograph. I couldn't care less who owns the brand. Four out of five of my Glycines I got on Ashford, at AMAZING sale prices 🤗
We are on the same page Jody, bought this exact Airman back in June with no issues from Ashford.com, which is US based, at $380! 🤷🏽♂️ Don’t see it listed there anymore but it might come back in stock. Love it and agree with your critique on the stellar classic design. I put on a steel mesh for now 💪🏼 The size is perfect for me because it’s a pinch smaller then my Glycine Combat Sub that I flipped, so the slightly smaller size compared to the Combat Sub might a consideration for people who want a Glycine. Reading the dial takes a little getting used too, but like it now and I’ve incorporated it into my daily Keto intermittent and longterm fasting. Whoop there it is, 24 hour fast is over 🥑🥩😁 Great stuff again thanks, see you next time from the US 🇺🇸✌🏼
Wish they made this exact configuration (white numerals, cyclops, black dial) in 40mm. They seem to only have the vintage patina versions in 40, or ones without the cyclops.
Lovely looking watch, but it must be fairly hard to tell the time from a glance, due to the 24-hour format. I also wish they hadn't bothered with the Cyclops, though I suppose it's only stuck on.
I'm in IT, and we use 24 hour time for everything. I'm also a ham, and I log everything in 24hr GMT. It's a nuisance to have to do the mental gymnastics every time I want to log a contact, so getting my Airman back in shape and getting it on my wrist will be a wonderful thing. :D
I caught the wave of exceedingly reasonable prices on the Airmen a couple of months ago and now have six, evenly spilt between GMT and Purist models. I bought both the Purist and GMT version of the DC-4 for 389USD each (new). My two contemporary GMT 42’s were about the same amount. My NOS Base 22 and Airman 18 were about $70-90 more. I am seeing much higher prices now. Sometimes, it pays to move quickly on a deal. I also got two of the Combat Quartz Chronographs. Glycine just moved up to fourth place, by quantity, in my collection, after Casio, Bulova and Citizen.
I have this exact watch. It's my first automatic and I got a great deal at only $360 USD brand new. I've really enjoyed it. I switched out the strap to a Bond NATO. Black and gray striped. The 24 hour dial really appeals to me. I usually use military time. The accuracy has been pretty good. About +6 seconds per day. Probably my only disappointment has been the lume. It doesn't last very long.
I bought a 24h Vostok Komandirskie 650546. After one or two days of wearing watch like this, your brain will switch to reading the time with no problem at all. But for us, Europeans, maybe it's a little bit easier, cause we use that format all the time. Anyway, this Airman looks great!
I have had a combat sub in hand for a week from Jomashop, and it was cheap as chips for an ETA 2824. It is incredibly slim for a diver and is only losing 1.25/sec per day. The supplied 'leather' backed sailcloth strap was absolutely vile and stiff to the point of unusable. It was swapped out faster than you can say 'Stamford Bridge'. The only drawback is a fairly stiff crown.
I’ve got a 24hr Vostok Komandirskie which I utterly love. I think 24hr watches are really fun and different. Didn’t take too long to get used to reading either
On the Jomashop , I see the 46mm GMT version for $379 which I prefer a bigger case. Love these 24 hour version. Easy to tell time with military time used or like my daughter said, just minus 2 and it's easy. Example, if its showing 1800 hours, minus 2 from the 8, then its 6 o'clock
You went on in great measure about the 24 hour clock. I suggest that the target market for this watch may be Veterans, and that we won't have any trouble adjusting to this at all.
I can see this creating problems in a moment of panic, then creating panic when someone else looks at your watch, it never ends LML :-P Apart from that, damn nice looking :) Armani got Glycine to remove their updated logo of the crown which added wings on the newest update, said it looked too close to their logo... a fellow watch Tuber posted this... I don't know why they changed it, it looked lovely as it was. Have a fab week/d :)
Pretty cool. I owned the DC-4 in the 4 handed gmt version. Did not even know they had a Purist version of the DC-4. That was the only 4 handed GMT version of the Airman I owned. All others have been Purist which is preferred style. I appreciate the different time reading format and visual reference for an occassional change from standard 12-hour format. The DC-4 is pretty nice vintage style. The only problem I had with it is the hour and minute hands are too similar.. a little hard to read at glance in day and night. Other than that it's a great looking design. And like nearly all Airmans , and possibly the Combat Subs, the lume is passable, but, could use some improvement. Hands are ok, but dial hour lume usually dim out faster making hands almost useless. Can get away with 12-hour setup, but with Purist reading 24-hours in dark without well visible hour references is near impossible.
Certainly something a little different! Much prefer this to those one handed monstrosities! Actually a really well designed watch, would definitely find a place for it in my collection!
Bought one from Jomashop but had to send it back. Quality control issues. The hour hand did not line up when the minute hand was at the top of the hour and the lock down crown could not be tightened down because of friction between the lock down bar and the side channels.
It would be perfect if the 12 midday marker was at the top and the 24/0 midnight marker was at the bottom, that way the hour hand is more analogous to the sun's position in the sky.
Lovely watch, I have the 24 hr Komanderskie and must agree that it takes a lot of getting used to, all I have to do now is convince myself that the extra $700 is worth it for the quickset date and the reduction in wear on my watch winder :-)
Anyone who really fancies a 24-hour dial at a very affordable price (usually around $80!) take a look at the VOSTOK KOMANDIRSKIE WATCH 650541 with 200m water resist. Not quite in the same class as this glycine and does not have a 24-hour bezel (it was originally made for submarine sailors who didn’t know if it was night or day!) Still, can break the ice at any party!
Another great review, would love a watch like this but not at that price I am sure one of the Chinese companies will come up with a copy soon.keep up the good work and hope the holidays are going well
Great review, as always brother....very nice indeed, only two things I'd change, black date wheel would really make the red jump and no cyclops, not keen on them....other than that it is the dogs....⌚🏴⌚🏴
Hi Jody, I'm surprised that you seem be saying that you haven't come across a Glycine 24 hr dial before, or did I misunderstand as they are quite common? Good review thank you. I myself have a Glycine Airman Base 22 Purist with a GL293 movement. Mine is slightly different in the the 12 hr marker is at the top of the dial (12 o'clock position) ithe 24 hr in the 6 o'clock position. This give you a.m. in the top half of the dial and p.m. in the lower, which makes much more sense to me. I do love i and when travelling it's so easy to maintain two time zones. One of he best travelling watches out there for the money.
watchgooroo and glycine-direct on eBay are authorized dealers in the USA and occasionally have these on sale for under $400 including manufacturer warranty, which is utterly ridiculous.
It was pretty good. I had a great time with fallen order. Although I fear Star Wars in general is headed down the tubes because of Disney. However, the mando had a pretty good first season.
Great vid as always and lovely watches....the pic on the movement of the Airman DC4 doesn't look like a DC4 engine though...it looks like you can see some fixed undercarriage struts ...looks similar to a Laird Turner Meteor or similar 30's race plane. :) ...maybe it is though and the lines are something else
I got the 36mm airman no 1 gmt, they used to be 500aud ish in ebay. Gotta say it’s an amazing watch at that price with real history and hold itself strong next to my 16700 gmt-master. Not sure i would buy it at current asking price tho. Reading 3 time zones quickly on this watch (for me: Sydney/Jakarta/Singapore) is better compared to a gmt master II. Only issue with mine compared to this DC4 is the one youre reviewing got 200m wr while my airman no.1 got a truer vintage 10m.... Dumb move by Glycine imo.
Weird... the 12 at the normal 6 position does not appear to be plumb with the 24 up top... it looks about 2 mm to the left. I just checked throughout video... is that some effect of the filming? I must say, I do love this watch, esp. for 800 USD.
I inherited my Great Grand Father's original Glycine Airman from when he was i the Air Force. Had it fixed up and now it is running like a champ! Still has the original "hacking seconds" wire that stops the second hand from moving. Wouldn't trade it for anything.
Every time this man says "HALLOOO" I smile
Me too 😊
Lol. My 8 year old son copies him perfectly when ever i open a video.
A Glycine Airman Purist is pretty high on my list. Hoping to pick one up later this year! I love the combination of a GMT bezel with a 24 hour main hour hand. Such a simple but functional solution to tracking two timezones. Being ex-Navy and used to "military time" I would definitely go for this great time piece and on a bund strap! Love the true 24-hour hand sweep.
usually I am only that quick when it comes to pleasuring the misses
Ahahhahaha!!
Here's a tip on making it easier to read the PM time. Turn the bezel so the 24 hour position is at the bottom, opposite the 12. Now you can read the bezel, 1-12, when the hour hand is running between 13-24 on the dial.
Nice tip never thought of it
You could imagine a Pilot with this new watch design on and every fifteen minutes asking His Co-Pilot, "Ere, You know what time it is?"
I could live with one, on looks alone.
Great show Jo, a beauty thanks.
Im totally in LOVE with that 24hr dial!! I need this watch in my collection!!
Hey, seems my timing WAS good! Glad you managed to get it in; beautiful piece with a great history.
I have the Airman18, smaller case, different numerals and no cyclops, I love it!
(bought mine through Massdrop 2 years ago)

The little blooper in the beginning was the perfect giggle-inducing way to start the day 🙃
Thanks. Beautiful review. Glycine airman and combat subs had been on my radar for quite some time now. Do more models please. Cheers
Glycine is great. Just bought a Base 22 purist. Love it!
A full WOW from me, never knew such watch existed and now boy do I want one! Again Jody you show me exciting stuff.
A 24h watch is quite special, to read it is always fun. I love how it shows the pass of the day. And it really catches attention and starts conversations. With the addition of a 24h bezel, you have a quite good "poor man's" GMT. Congrats!
Only three days ago I confessed to my GF that I fell in love with a Glycine Airman GMT and here you go... Jody is collecting data from us 💪 😄
He is secretly a Chinese bot!
Ha ha finally you review a watch I have no intention of purchasing this is a rare event… Probably because I bought it two weeks ago. It is a bit hard to tell the difference between the hands and if the hour and is off sync at all you will notice as there is so little space between the hours.

I have a glycine airman double 12. It is honestly amazing, but the purists have always caught my eye.
Still love my Airman 18 purist. Has the same look as the original with a bit more presence.
Love a true 24hr watch. Have a vintage Russian one by Raketa
This is a really lovely looking watch. Also a important watch because of the history. Nice review again :)
Nice. I've got a Raketa 24h

The hour hand rotating once is indeed revolutionary (good pun work😎)
On vacay but still taking care of us. Thanks Jody.
i have the 12 hr dc4 and love it, got it from the states and it was a bargain for what you get. really enjoy it terrific value
No problem with the 24 hr. dial on my Vostok. Though it has taken about 2 years in a large watch collection rotation to feel semi-intuitive.
I don't have this one, but I have FIVE different Glycines 😳😱
Absolutely love every one.
Two quarz and three autos - moon phase, gmt, and a Valjoux powered chronograph.

I have an Airman 42 with the GMT hand.
As others have mentioned, there are several Russian companies that are, or have, producing 24hr watches including Vostok!
I like that Glycine! I might have to add one to the collection, when I can!

I’ve sold Stowa, Laco, Yema, all on Chrono 24 for fair and reasonable prices. Definitely not ridiculous.
Nice, reminds me of a Vostok
I can see this creating problems in a moment of panic, then creating panic when someone else looks at your watch, it never ends LML :-P Apart from that, damn nice looking :)

Awesome watch, considering to add this, lovely finish, unique 1 circle dial
Love the intro! Ever thought of throwing together a mash up of bloopers?
always love your channel - especially love that your a Star Wars fan !!!!
paul from Sydney
Great watch and review as always brother!
Thanks Miguel! A bit of fun.
Glycine are now Invicta's premium brand. I think that's great.
This is certainly different... But I like it. Great review as always Jody.
This watch reminds me a lot of the Bulova Accutron Astronaut which was a GMT 12h dial with the amazing tuning fork movement.
Love it but you're right about re-learning how to tell the time.
Check out the Vostok 24 hour model. Mine is pretty decent for the $60 or so. They also have a GMT. Thanks for this one. Fun watch.
It would be perfect if the 12 midday marker was at the top and the 24/0 midnight marker was at the bottom, that way the hour hand is more analogous to the sun's position in the sky.
Nice, I picked up one of these about a month ago. Still need to get around to the unboxing.
Definitely want a watch movement setup like this but not sure I'd want this one particularly
Jeff Tweedy is gonna come to claim his watch 😆
I got that!
Jody coulda sported a Wilco T-shirt
Glycine Airman DC-4 GMT version review coming anytime soon? :)
Beautiful watch with a real legacy. Have one, and its not a problem at all to get used to the 24 hour setup. :-)
Hi Jody, I'm surprised that you seem be saying that you haven't come across a Glycine 24 hr dial before, or did I misunderstand as they are quite common? Good review thank you. I myself have a Glycine Airman Base 22 Purist with a GL293
movement.
Though I have no particular need for two time zones, I love this watch and would love to add one to my collection! Nice review!😍
You can buy them from drop.com (formerly Massdrop) every now and again. I think around the $500 mark.
THAT is GORGEOUS!!! Do you have a link to that exact model please?
I think this would be brilliant for shift workers such as myself. I wonder if there's a cheap quartz alternative 🤔
There's a cheap russian alternative. I have 1, starts with a V or B if ur russian
Yeah, there's a 24h Vostok. I mean you could just use a Casio Royale or something.
May check out the vostok, I'd rather have analog otherwise Casio Royale would be the obvious choice 😂
@@mjh1 it's just alright... wouldn't say its good. But it is cheap
Interesting watch - reckon it would be a bit of a mindbender to read - Also how good was Fallen Order, Best SW game since Kotor 2 i reckon
It was pretty good. I had a great time with fallen order. Although I fear Star Wars in general is headed down the tubes because of Disney. However, the mando had a pretty good first season.
@@FrostBlackbird Agree on Mando - I loved it - good bit of a western vibe
well, to a tons of folks 24h time is the standard and what they're used to operate in, so the 24h dial itself isn't much of a problem.
the coolest helloooo ever 🤣
Great vid as always and lovely watches....the pic on the movement of the Airman DC4 doesn't look like a DC4 engine though...it looks like you can see some fixed undercarriage struts ...looks similar to a Laird Turner Meteor or similar 30's race plane. :) ...maybe it is though and the lines are something else
Very unusual I’ve never seen anything like that DC4 it’s a good looking watch 👍 thanks Jody
Hey Jody, great review as always!
Have the Glycine Airman double twelve in 40mm. It’s a keeper for me!
Great shirt for a great game! (Oh...and a great watch, too.)
Hmmmm, it certainly is nice to get into a box for the first time......
There's just so many good watches in this world that I don't have to have.
Weird... the 12 at the normal 6 position does not appear to be plumb with the 24 up top... it looks about 2 mm to the left. I just checked throughout video... is that some effect of the filming? I must say, I do love this watch, esp. for 800 USD.
