- Riding the bus through rural Illinois with John Prine and his bandmates, Phil Parlapiano, Bill Bonk and Rolly Salley.
Five weeks opening for Bonnie Raitt playing songs from "Nick of Time" and previewing "Something to Talk About." Bonnie and John go way back, she was so kind and respectful to all of us, a real class act. Every night we'd all come out and do "Angel From Montgomery" with her for her encore.
It's almost a year and GOD I still miss him ..RIP JP

I loved JP. I met him once by chance. I was having a PoBoy sandwich in New Orleans at a small place that was known to all the locals like me. The place was crowded and a guy said hey....you can sit here at my table, I'm alone. We started talking and he asked me what I was doing today. I told him I came downtown to purchase John Prine tickets for me,my wife and father in law. He's retired Army and visiting from South Carolina and it's a special night for him and us. We talked a while longer and he asked me would I like to MEET JOHN PRINE ? I told him it's been a dream of mine and my father in law. He then told me he was JOHN'S GUITAR TECH. I COULDN'T BELIEVE IT. He got our names and told me to go to the WILL CALL at the ticket booth and get our ALL ACCESS BACKSTAGE PASSES AFTER SHOW. I thanked him very much. The show was on the RIVERBOAT PRESIDENT. STEVE GOODMAN 45 minutes JOHN PRINE 1 HOUR. THEN STEVE AND JOHN ABOUT ANOTHER 45 MINUTES OR SO .3 ENCORES. BACKSTAGE......ALL THE FOOD AND DRINK. TALKED TO JOHN ABOUT 20 MINUTES. FATHER IN LAW AND JOHN TALKED FOR ALMOST AN HOUR. ARMY STUFF. FRANK WAS A 3 BANGER WWII, KOREA, AND VIET NAM.
WHAT A NIGHT I'LL NEVER FORGET
John told me the story of how he acquired his trusty Martin D-28 that was by his side throughout his entire career. While in the Army in Germany a fellow soldier traded it to him for a weekend pass. Pretty good deal, I'd say. For John, that is!

Such a beautiful human being. I think the thing about John Prine was that he made alright, even cool and fun to be a flawed and broken human, ( which we all are) and still know you're loved. A college roommate introduced me to him in 1976, and died from cancer a month before John did. I will always remember them together, and feel blessed.

I'm a Veteran of the Vietnam fiasco. He had me with Sam Stone. 1st new Album I heard when I returned, or at least most of me. I left all the Kid in me behind. Now? I listen to "Hello in There" and cry. I miss him badly, as my cousin Murph introduced me to his music and he's gone too.
We spent a lot of time on that bus. The bus driver was a guy known as "Cowboy" from Tennessee. Great guy, great stories. Got the name cause he wore cowboy boots when he was in the Army, used to fly rescue chopper missions. Same bus and driver drove Keith Richards on the Talk is Cheap tour. Keith used to sit up front on overnight drives, smoke a cigarette in his PJs, and watch the road go by while chatting with Cowboy. You could feel the history when riding that bus, Cowboy would often say, "I got me precious cargo", a true professional in every sense.
That was a great share. Never met John. Have most all of his records or should I say, CDs.and bought those after he passed. He's been gone over a year and I'm still pissed. He died within days of one of my brothers (not by Covid). My brother that was John's age diied in '95 from a motorcycle accident. I think Dylan was right. John wrote memories. His simple songs were are not so simple after all. I hope to join him in heaven over a ginger ale and vodka. I'll leave him to his 9 mile cigarette :)

Bill, find a producer and make your JP documentary. We want his story played out on the screen. Won't be another John Prine.
Just happy I was alive at the same time John was. My favorite lyricist ever.
He went on to give is 29 more years of great music. Still miss him. 💚🙏💜

I am so grateful to have been in John's audience at a folk fest or two and other venues!
John wrote simple lyrics with genius rhyme schemes and beautiful vocals along with inspired collaborations. What could be more simple and utterly impossible?
This brought back good memories of picking up his debut record, seeing him along with Steve Goodman
on Lincoln Avenue in Chicago and hearing Bonnie Raitt first singing "Angel From Montgomery".
We miss you John. Saw you in late 1970's, best show ever. It was a good time.

John told us the story how he used to hit the stage solo with a six pack of beer and a pack of cigarettes. No bathroom breaks, he'd play for hours, finish the last beer and say good night.
At one big show -- I wish I could remember the venue, might've been Carnegie Hall or The Beacon Theatre in NYC -- there was a big "No Smoking" sign next to the stage. In the dark the spotlight found him there as he walked onstage, John stopped to look at the sign, then blew a big cloud of smoke to the cheers of the crowd, before he'd played a single note or said a single word. The Real Deal.
The John Prine you saw onstage was the same guy we saw backstage or at his home in Nashville. It was like hanging out with Mark Twain. He'd observe for a long time and then he'd say something brilliant and witty and amazing.
... You are lucky to have known him.... By the way, tobacco is one of the best plant medicines.

I love John Prineand his music.”Bruised Orange”album helped me get thru college.I understand Hello in There and always have,but the darn song makes me so sad;I can hardly get thru it!Now I’m in my 60s,JP is gone,&many times I have to skip the damn beautiful song!
I'm in my 60s too, and for me it's "Sam Stone". When I play John's songs in bars and at parties, I can never sing it without crying. John had a special way of describing sadness that was so profound.

I'm blown away by the people that do not or have never heard of him. The world would be a better place if everyone had a favorite John Prine song in their heart. He played in the twin cities in 1991 and I lived, worked, and went to MPLS community college right close to where he was performing on Hennepin Ave. I did not go, society must slow down and move on the good things and people in live, another lost opportunity. Sounds like a solo show. I joined John's band a few months later, we did five weeks opening for Bonnie Raitt in the fall. I agree the world needs John Prine, now more than ever. Before I knew about him, my first wife dragged me to the Coach House for a solo show, and I was blown away. There was so much love in that room, everyone sang every song. That performance was taped and became the John Prine Live album, and I'm proud to have been in that audience and can re-live that show by just hitting Play.
Heaven is happy and the Tree of forgiveness is open. John was a lyrical genius. His music and generosity of sharing it with the world will always be appreciated. RIP John

Given the current state of affairs, one can only imagine what heart-wrenching, soul-stirring lyrics John would have written if he were still with us. I wish he could have stuck around long enough for us to say “Hello in There”. John, I hope you’re enjoying an eternity of vodka and ginger ale up there! Drink one for me!!

On late night tour bus rides with John in 1991-1992 we’d sit at the little table and play poker. He’d smoke a few Marlboro's, we might talk about the gig that night and if we were lucky, there’d be a story.
He told us how he was head of the motor pool when he was in the Army in Germany in the 1960s. “One time, there was a colonel coming in for an inspection, which was a huge deal. The sergeant realized we had one jeep too many. In the Army, having one too many Jeeps was almost worse than having one too few, and was going to cause us serious problems. So, we dug a big hole and buried it.” Problem solved. They passed inspection and went back to work.

Covid took one the great ones. I hate that I started listening to his songs at the same time that he was dying.
John had survived multiple cancer surgeries, including lung surgery. He was in intensive care, but stable, we were optimistic he'd pull through. I too can't believe he's gone, but he left us so many reassuring lessons in song which we can enjoy and learn from, long after he's gone. He personally taught me the value of simplicity - how to say more with less.

Many thanks for this--the more John Prine, the better. It's odd that, at 02:49, the reporter wonders why "accolades" haven't led to "notoriety" for Prine; one would imagine it would be the opposite. Maybe he's mistaking notoriety for mere fame?
Absolutely. When I knew John, he always seemed at peace with the success he had. He'd be the first to tell you his own vocal/guitar style wasn't meant for the mainstream.
I remember we read a review on the bus after a gig where they compared his guitar playing to rubbing a Brillo pad on a greasy frying pan. We all had a good laugh.
He always seemed to me like he could come on in and join our family sing-a-longs where my two brothers played and everybody sang, including his songs. I only got to see him in person once in Telluride.@@billbonk3
He did more with 3 chords than anyone.
Maybe its: All he needed was 3 chords.
When I was in his touring band, we talked about songwriting a lot. He helped me with my own songs, and always said the same thing "can you make it simpler?" I see now that he understood songwriting at a very high level, let the listener fill in the blanks.
@@billbonk3 I enjoyed the word play in his songs. I guess that is what made his songs 'funny'.
I loved how he stopped playing a song after only the first chord, and asked the audience how they knew what he was going to sing(they were clapping). He said I use the same three chords with all my songs, LOL.
