  • The full show can be streamed at • John Prine - Live on M... .
From a WNEW-FM radio show, 1987. John Prine told the story behind the song - how it came into being and how he refused to take a writing credit and got a jukebox instead. Then he sang the song and dedicated it to the late Steve Goodman, another co-writer of the song. John was accompanied by Philip Donnelly here. This is one of the rare occasions where John sang this song in public.

No, mate, they both wrote it together, in Paul Anka's dressing room, 3&1/2 sheets to the wind. Stevie started it, they both wrote the rest, except for the last verse. Prime wanted no credit and when DA Coe made a hit with it, Stevie bought and delivered an antique Wurlitzer jukebox.

In 1978 I went to see Steve Martins' Wild & Crazy Guy tour in Dallas. Steve Goodman came out as the unannounced warm up act. I had seen a few shows on PBS with Goodman, and was very pleasantly surprised to see Him. I felt like I was the only one there who knew who he was. Everyone was there to see crazy Steve Martin, not some unknown singer, and yet within a few songs His incredible charismatic stage presence had them in the palm of His hand. It was very impressive, and He did a very entertaining 30 min set. I'll never forget it, He made such a impact in His too short life. A few years later Steve Martin came on the Johnny Carson show and mentioned that He was doing a fund raising show to benefit Goodmans' wife and kids. I didn't know He was sick, or that He died. It was a shocking blow to hear. You feel so robbed when someone could have had a long career is abruptly gone. So sad. At least His music remains.

hey mr/ms strukhoff - did you know tom costello and betty crane - they turned me onto Steve and John. They were best friends for life - and I always thanked them for giving me that gift. Nice to see you write about Steve

Could someone please take this stuff i jotted down and make it into a real song. As you can tell I am no songwriter but love Steve Goodman and John Prine.. The writing of the perfect country and Western Song...Steve Goodman and john Prine came to the Big Apple the second time
They didn’t have a place to stay so they stayed at Paul Ankas Place
John came in from bar hopping that night
    Looked over Steve edges face
Steve had written down two lines
    On some hotel room stationary
John asked where did you get that paper Steve
From the cage of our yellow canary
It was all that I could do to keep from crying
That got john to start to thanking
John and Steve got this great idea
Mixed up trash can punch in the wet bar sinken
John and Steve commenced to drinking
    Their new secret potion
John started jumping up and down on the bed
That’s when he got the notion
I know the next two lines to your song now Steve
Now listen this will go down in fame
You don’t have to call medaling darling
You never even called d me by my name
Steve thought they had written the perfect
John said no don’t give me no credit
Look over it Steve up and down
    And maybe make some edits
Steve passed it on to David Allen Coe
David Said you left out a few lines
Let me Help you out a bit
    We’ll Make this mother Rhyme
Now you know how the rest of it goes
You know the rest of the Story
The perfect Country and Western Verse
The song went down in Glory
It was all that I could do to keep from crying
When MaMa got runned over by that Train
You don’t have to call me darling darling darling
YOU NEVER even Called Me By MY NAME
Freddie Joe Ferrara Please forgive my writing

John has a special "in" with God. Steve's up there,
bugging God to keep one on Johnny all the time.
