      Americans celebrate it because they helped the Mexicans defeat the French and also they felt inspired by the victory in Puebla during the American Civil War. I don’t know if people today know that or they celebrate it just because… but I heard that it’s more celebrated in Puebla and America than most of Mexico
      (I’m editing this now to say that apparently it isn’t celebrated that much In Puebla. Thanks Andy for telling me)

      @@cream9561 it's also because the Mexican victory at Puebla prevented the French from taking Mexico City before the Fall of Vicksburg. If the French had gotten to Mexico City in 1862, they probably would've given the Confederacy cannons and supplies in exchange for cotton. As it happened, when the French took Mexico City in 1863, Vicksburg had fallen and the Confederacy was on the backfoot.

So they don’t believe me the party’s is for the Americans money and it’s not a Mexican holiday. I explain it’s like we would be celebrating the Boston tea party. Only those who went to school in Mexico knew it was a battle and Sept. 16th was their Independence Day. So no it’s not only for white people. Arizona and California Mexicans go ham for it too.

    For anyone wanting a mini history lesson: cinco de mayo (fifth of may) is a celebration held in a city in Mexico called “Puebla”. Cinco de mayo is celebrated because this small town (Puebla) was being invaded by a French army. (As far as my knowledge goes) they some how won and thought it was such an amazing victory that they made it a holiday. (I’m not too educated on this next part but you get the whole ordeal) It became more widely celebrated in the U.S. because beer companies wanted to promote themselves and decided “Cinco de mayo” was a perfect way to say “come celebrate this towns victory with a cold beer!” And we for some reason went along with it. Funny thing is cinco de mayo is mostly celebrated in Los Angeles, and not Mexico.

    • @lyn3325
      @lyn3325 10 місяців тому +21

      The US also wanted to defeat the French so they held it as "the day Mexico helped us defeat the French." Napoleon was going to supply weapons to the Confederacy in the US Civil War, so the Union was invested in French loss. The US takes it as a celebrated win as per Mexico's victory. So we celebrate Mexico in thanks. Definitely true that it's just for the fun and alcohol. Also true, that people assume it is Mexican Independence Day because it matches the wording of the Fourth of July. Edit: Actually, I'll post this as its own comment so more people see it.

      We throw a parade over some of our main streets, many JR and High School students march over the city, next to floats, indigenous people, horse riders and the military. Even the president comes to watch It.
      That day, over a hill inside the military zone, the army performs a recreation of the battle.
      Aside Puebla and Tlaxcala (the smallest state here) no other state declares it a holiday. Maaaaybe State of Mexico, but that would be stretching the truth.
      What is true, because I know people who lives over the area where the battle was held is that there are apparitions, poltergeist and many other weird phenomena.

    Where I'm from Cinco de mayo was a way to teach kids in school about Mexican culture from the food to the music to the traditional festive clothes worn on birthdays holidays and weddings. It was also an opportunity for the kids to learn a little bit of Spanish to be able to some what talk to the immigrant children in their native language. It was one of my favorite memories seeing all those colorful dresses and suits and the dancing and the food with the music. Here in michigan there was a influx in immigration from Mexico and it kinda became part of American culture. It's not only the day Mexico won against France but it has become sprt of a Mexican culture appreciation day here in the US.

      It is weird that the 16th of September is almost irrelevant in the US but it is our Independence Day and the biggest party in Mexico. It is as If Americans outside the US celebrated instead the 4th of July the battle of Midway or el Alamo.

    • @genevievemarie_
      @genevievemarie_ Рік тому +19

      @@luisbernal7689 the Chicano Power movement in the 60s and 70s picked up Cinco de Mayo as a holiday/celebration because of what it symbolized. Chicanos and Mexican Americans were facing severe racism and oppression (which they STILL don't teach about in schools). Even when they were trying to desegregate, our people were being beat in the streets by police. Not just during peaceful protest, but in everyday life.
      So the movement saw hope and knew they could create change. They'd celebrate Cinco de Mayo because they felt it symbolized their fight. And although, things are not perfect, what they did worked. Not only did they protest, but they also got involved in local politic, boycotted companies, etc until changes were made.
      Growing up in the early 90s and 2000s the Chicano people of Colorado would still have parades with and festivals. We'd dance folklórico. People would drive around all day and night, honking horns, with giant Mexican flags on their cars and trucks.
      So maybe it seems weird and silly to people now, but to the Chicano people (especially in the 60s and 70s), it was a celebration of culture and their fight too.

      @@genevievemarie_ yes but why cinco de mayo and not 16th of September? It is our independence day, why took another date for a battle that wasn’t as relevant as the independence war and essentially has the same symbolism and meaning. it is weird like I said that they felt they needed to pick up another date than that. I really like the analogy about midway or el Alamo being the most important date to celebrate their culture for Americans abroad.

    • @luisbernal7689
      @luisbernal7689 Рік тому +3

      @@genevievemarie_ i know what it means now for the Chicano community, it’s just it’s origin as why picked that holiday which seems strange, we even went on to lose that war against the French and we would get back our country only because they left for a Europe where they were having bigger issues. I insist they should have picked the 16th of September, makes more sense in every way, even the 20th of November (revolution day) makes way more sense.

    • @genevievemarie_
      @genevievemarie_ Рік тому +3

      @@luisbernal7689 I'm not sure why they picked it over the others. Why they felt a special affinity for that battle. But they did. Perhaps it was the French's link to the Confederacy during the American Civil War which was going on during that time frame. During the start of the Chicano Power movement, we were in midst of the civil rights movement. We knew what the Confederacy stood for. It represented the racism and oppression they were facing every single day.
      So, while I don't for sure know why. They felt an affinity for that particular battle. We can't go back and change the date they picked. They never called it Mexico's Independence Day, like the woman in this video is making fun of them for. I think it's important to take history into consideration. The plight people faced and the progress they made. There's still so much work to do, but they accomplished so much. So many people from my mom's generation were not even taught Spanish because of the consequences at the time. Now we're able to speak it a lot more freely. It's seen as beneficial to speak Spanish. And yet so many who lost their language as a result of the racism get made fun of now.

      Tecnicamente, decir americanos para referirse a los estadounidenses es correcto, ya que ellos no tienen gentilicio oficial además de que en inglés se refiere al resto del continente como the americas, esto es como el caso de turtles and tortoises, all turtoises are turtles but not all turtles are tortoises.
