Sorry you don't understand the duality of not fitting into one box or the other, but so you know, it does exist. I would suggest empathy, because it's all understandable when you're sad and judged because you're a "nopal en la frente" type (which is stupid in itself, obvio) but it also fuckin' sucks when the people who are just like you and were raised the same way you were say "nah you ain't like us" because we halvsies. Shit, I was on the rancho more than any of the Mexican American people I went to school 6th-college with (there were nearly 0 people other than white for k-5, and that's when I was *clearly* a lil Mexican girl. (I've gotten lighter/mom's side as I age.) They sent me and my sibs straight to ESL, even tho we spoke 2 languages. So miss me with that clout shit.). We spent more time in Mexico with my family than any of the Mexican Americans here. It was a privilege. But you're a pinche loquito if you're gonna tell me I'm not "Mexican enough" because of how I/we look.

      My cousin made my aunt so angry she broke the only rule she made for herself. They are full-blooded Filipinas (my aunt had dual American-Phillippino citizenship, my cousin had to immigrate as her child). My cousin, at 22, was moving out. My aunt just kept ignoring my cousin, eventually silent treatment because my aunt said no. My cousin had a boyfriend and wanted to be in an overnight physical relationship with him. Around the week she was leaving, my aunt finally exploded on my cousin. She gave her an a$$-kicking for the disobedience, then told my cousin that she would be on her own. My aunt and dad experienced a very physically abusive childhood and all of them are against hurting your children. But my cousin kept pushing her mom. I did the same thing to my mom and she was much taller than me. She still gave me the woman on woman slap down I needed that one day I was begging for it (being disrespectful) . But that fight was a beating...what my aunt did to my cousin. My aunt said she doesn't actually remember it, that she saw black, and when she was coming back from the black, it was in flashes. It took my cousin over a week to physically recover. My younger cousin had to run down the street to my other aunts house and get help because she wouldn't stop. My aunt got a lot of therapy after that. She was told it was a dual reaction C-PTSD responses.

      @@AmySkribble "Hija" means "daughter", and "de" is a preposition with the same function as "of" (as in "the answer of a question"). Basically, her mother was saying the Spanish version of "son of a b*tch" directed at her own daughter, but she didn't finish the sentence. XD

      @Hawner 11 місяців тому +14

      @@AmySkribble Yes, that is indeed correct, but only in Mexican Spanish and for a specific context.
      The actual word, so to speak, to say "daughter" is "Hija". That is true for both Spanish variants.
      Now, "Mija" is a name you give your daughter affectionately, very similar to "Sonny" in English, regardless of the actual name. Furthermore, just like "Sonny" is quite literally "Son" used in a cute way, "Mija" is like a contraction of "Mi hija" (My daughter). "Mijo" would be the male variant of that with the same meaning.
