Rina Yang is a part of a new wave of cinematographers, whose work is so far predominantly focused on shooting short form content. In this episode I’ll break down her philosophy on creating images and show how, using a range of technical film gear, she is able to create a contrasty, punchy, textual visual style.

Usually on Cinematography Style I feature big name DOPs who have a long track record of feature film work. Today, I thought I’d feature a cinematographer whose work I personally love, which strongly resonates with my own photographic interests. Although Rina Yang is now beginning to shoot more long form work, it’s her commercial and short form work which made me start to admire her style. As I mainly work in the commercials industry, I have a respect for good short form cinematography, which I feel isn’t always analysed enough.
Hope you enjoy the video!
Please do more up and comers.
Will do!
This video is very interesting, thank you very much! Looking forward to the next ones
Well, I’m surprised it has so many. Not because of the quality, I think this channel is amazing. But it already has almost 100k subs, and been active since may this year? Wow, impressive growth.
Rina is an amazing Dp. Would be fantastic to have a Cinematography Style of Adriano Goldman.
I really appreciate that you included Rina Yang. She is the one of my favorites, the images she makes mirrors the way I see the world as many in our generation.
She's one of my new favourites too. Can't wait to see her shooting more long form/feature films in the future.
!!!!!!
Dp’s I would love to see next:
-Greig Fraser
-Harris Savides
-Sean Bobbitt
-Adam Arkapaw
I absolutely love her style! The film grain, imperfect image, high contrast! It is vintage!
I very much got a similar vibe from Adam Arkapaw’s work on True Detective (and most of the rest of his work in general), I kind of think of this style as the “modern indie” look, imperfect and kinda dreamy :)
Thank u so much for featuring Rina Yang. She is SUCH an incredible and underrated cinematographer.
her work is in Top Boy have you seen this?
Your videos are a combination of valuable industry experience, technical knowledge, and easy-to-understand presentation I've yet to come across anywhere else. I'm so pleased to see Rina Yang here! I love her work and her dedication to help raise up minority DPs like herself. I appreciate you including younger DPs alongside well-seasoned cinematographers. I'd love to see more newer generations of DPs like Andrew Droz Palermo and Marcell Rév.
Thanks for the support! I'll try feature more young talent in future videos. I've actually been wanting to do a video on Euphoria.
Love Rina's work! Great job once again. Would love to see more young DP's highlighted on this channel
Yeah, she's great. Will try to balance featuring young/established DOPs more in the future.
I'm surprised your videos haven't gotten more traffic yet :0 Regardless, thanks for the insightful channel! Cheers.
Thanks for watching as always!
His channel is new, yet I'm sure it'll soon blow up uwu
So glad I found this channel!
Thank you for introducing us to her! i'm going to search for her work!
Great, definitely worth checking out her website.
BY far my favorite episode, i love when you show artist who have touched and created such amazing pieces that i cant seem to find the credit for.
This was so well done! Loved the in-depth look on her style.
Bruh! This is so good!!! Thank you so much for creating this video!
I appreciate all the videos I've watched from you so far. Thank you for sharing! 🇹🇹
and now, she's Rina Yang, BSC!
I really fell in love with these type of videos! He explaines all the details with a so calm voice.
This was so much nicer and more inspiring than any lens review or anything I have seen and given me some conviction in how I like things to look. Fantastic video and an easy sub looking forward to more.
Fascinating analysis. I'm just starting to grasp all the intricacies behind the work of these skilled cinematographers and yet was hooked from start to finish. Had never heard about her. Would love to know other young, talented people in the business. Glad that YT recommended me your video. Keep up the good work!
Superbly effective and efficient explanation of how this gifted artist achieves her distinct looks. Really great, informative, concise video!
I loved her work on top boy
Very nicely well researched intro to her work! Have to add her to my modern day favs Bradford Young and John Saxton.
thx for this cool and informative breakdown! 🙏
Yeah the breakdown is in depth! im starting to use what ive learnt in these videos in my own work!
This type of contact is unbelievably helpful!
I'm into animation and illustration but I want to break boundaries and incorporate all things visual and your chanel will be a big help in gaining more understanding. Thanks for your hard work and good content!

Here from Taylor Swift's announcement 🤩
Is this gonna be like the ALL TOO WELL I'M SO EXCITEDDDDDDD
veryvwell done thx. keep up the good work. conparison to ‚old‘ dps would be decent.
I thought back lighting:In lighting design, backlighting is the process of illuminating the subject from the back. In other words, the lighting instrument and the viewer face each other, with the subject in between. This creates a glowing effect on the edges of the subject, while other areas are darker.
That’s direct back lighting. As long of the light source is behind the subject at some capacity (whether it be off to the side, in/out of frame, or directly behind them, it counts as backlighting.
Is anyone else also here after Taylor’s announcement?
I am more interested in creating emotive images than something that is technically perfect. Rather than searching for perfectly composed frames, shooting on excessively sharp lenses
Great video! How do you find / come across DPs.. mainly from what you watch in your own time or is there like a directory?
Really great video! What's the song at the beginning?
Top Boy!!
Great video man, I'd love it if you'd do one on: paolo carnera. Cinematographer for Suburra and Gomorrah who used a quite similar look and compare it to her style. Could be the colors but I also feel like the Joker was shot quite similar.
Colorwize I like it. What I don't like is how all the flesh tones and faces are always dark and undefined.
My ex came up with her, she became Rina and he’s still struggling. She’s been so selective on with long form project t take as her first. No idea she shot top boy. Glad she’s getting some recognition. I’ll definitely be working with her one day!
Hello!
I suggest that you make a video about Leonardo Simões.
He has a very specific style, which reache its peak in Vitalina Varela (who won the prize for best film at the Locarno festival).
Thanks for the suggestion! I don't know him, I'll try to check out that film soon.
Do rodrigo prieto! Love your videos
You should do a video on christopher ripley
Can you please break down Morgan Cooper, as he id my favorite DP at the moment
Any chance that you'll be covering Marcell Rev?
Top Boy s3 was the best cinematography wise thanks to her
Hello, anyone know what is the name of the opening song / music? Anyway great video 🙏🙏
Can you please make tutorials on cinematography
What was the title of the background music at the beginning?
"Instant crush" Corbyn kites
What's the top clip playing at 1:30? Looks like a cool movie
What film/commercial was that with the men jumping in the locker room? I can't find it on Vimeo
What's the song at the beginning? I can't seem to find the right song through the description
can someone tell me what 1:40 is from? The two hands reaching across the grass
Rina yang just put you on her Instagram story
I knew her because of Taylor Swift ✨
Really.....as someone in my 40s...I am surprised by this video....naturally for beginners. But her style seems the new normal...rather than something extraordinary.
4:58 what movie is this?
does anyone know what the music playing at the start and end is?
"Instant crush" Corbyn kites
@@monkynutzuk thank you man , you're amazing!
@@kinn11 😎
How is that effect done at 0:11? with the balls? O rwhere can i find that video
wow, how do you get all of this information?! haha
Usually based on interviews with the DOP or, in this video, from looking at behind the scenes footage or images to see what gear they used and how they chose to use it.
Also from my experiences working on set and handling gear I can usually get an idea of how images are shot based on the look of the film itself.
@@InDepthCine oh I see. That's awesome.
Come here from Taylor Swift's "All too well" short film
Rina it is nice name )
Great look at a young DP. You didn’t mention her obvious use of non-naturalistic colour and relatively low contrast images. While impressive, I feel her style is pretty typical of what we see a lot nowadays - I didn’t see anything new or groundbreaking here.
get this man a pop filter
by Taylor Swift
My question is,
How do these cinematographers afford the gear?????
Gear is most often rented by the production company before each job. The director of photography is able to provide a list of the gear that they want to use for the specific job, and then the production company covers the rental cost for it. This way, each job can have gear that is specific for the artistic vision.
@@elansherman thank you for the reply man!
Direct sun light into camera ,is she custom breaking cu....
I feel this whole "new wave" style is pretty much just a rip off of _Fallen Angels_ look. Not complaining, just saying...
You sound South African 🤷♂️ lol
This style should just hide the fact that she is shooting on low budget. Nothing special to me to be honest.
