"People confuse 'pretty' with good cinematography."
- Roger Deakins
Exactly he speaks about him self and is work. 😂😂😂
@@blender_wiki
What do you mean?
I think in case of Skyfall and Blade Runner 2049 he sometimes kinda did go for a rather pretty than good cinematography
I was not familiar with Deakins. I saw recently his work in Kundun.Loved the cinematography, masterpiece. The predominant golden shade in the scenes composition, the landscapes, the opulent ceremonies, ritualistic dimension, monastic court etiquette. Really stunning work
I love that Deakins is on record saying that he'd shoot a movie on a phone if it fit.
He doesn't care about the tool itself, but instead on how a tool gets the specific message across.
Weather it's an Arri Alexa LF or 16mm film camera. An interviewer once asked him what he think of Tarantino bringing back Ultra70mm in Hateful Eight.and he was pretty meh about it. He just said that it's just another tool. Which perfectly describes his philosophy.
I totally agree with that philosophy. I made a video called 'The Medium Is The Message' which comes to the same conclusion - pick the medium that is most suited to tell the story (be that a smartphone or Imax).
@@InDepthCine I watched it. I seriously mean that the more videos of yours I watch the more love this channel. For me cinematography has always been the most interesting part of filmmaking as it is the way the viewer gets to explore the world of the film. Of course editing, acting, set design, costume design, ect play a huge part in that too. But the composition and lighting dictate what to show and what not to show.
And as your channel talks about all things cinematography, it really resonates with me :)
He’s so correct that people have become obsessed with the megapixels and raster of cameras instead of the composition of the shots.
I remember, when I first started with photography, a lot of people told me that „my camera makes really nice shots“, when I shown them my work.
So they had no clue, how long I've tried different lighting settings, added objects to the scene to balance it, chosen different outfits for a interesting color scheme and tried to make a pleasing composition in general. Especially a lot of people, who are not in this kind of stuff are like that.
Gear doesn't bring talent, neither does it bring experience. Most of the time is having less the best way to learn things. So I am pretty sure that skilled people like Roger Deakins could shoot a great story with just a smartphone, and it will look insane.
Ah yes, coming from the guy who has no problem shooting with the best equipment there could ever be and literally being able to build his sets from scratch
This channel is a hidden gem every filmmaker needs to know about!
🙏
💯
I agree
Agreed 💯
Roger is best cinematographer all time!
I love this channel. Please, never stop! I'd also love to see film based analysis - very technical, but also explaining the motivation behind certain visual decision; in regards to story.
Thanks. Got a video coming up on that. Stay tuned
One of the main things i noticed when i first watched Sid and Nancy - when i was just beginning to become a cinema lover - was the beautiful cinematography, and only now i found out that Roger Deakins was the DOP... amazing!!!!
You might be the best new channel of 2020!!
Haha thanks!
And 2021 ! I’m staying tuned ! This is going to improve my cinematography skills
I wasn’t keen on watching 1917 as I don’t really like ww1 stuff.
But I sat down after all the hype and watched it.
I was in awe and has to be one of my favourite films now for filmography.
You have an amazing sense of structuring. Great video. It would be fantastic if you did an essay on Bruno Delbonnel's work too.
Great suggestion. I love his work and he definitely has a signature style. Plus I think Inside Llewyn Davis is a masterpiece.
@@InDepthCine Totally a masterpiece. And not to mention The Darkest Hour.
Skyfall, Blade Runner 2049 & 1917 have a widescreen 2.39:1 aspect ratio, however, in IMAX, the aspect ratio of the three films are 1.90:1 with 26% more picture at the top and bottom of the screen.
Love precision and creativity over digital effects. Love the narrative to be the focus of attention, the story first, love properly-used close-ups and a great composition. How do I send him a screenplay?
Roger Deakins is my favourite cinematographer.
He's just uber cool! He really is like a rolling stone member.
I remember a video about digital vs film. He on one side saying it's way more practical and putting down a munch of practical, technical and respectable reasons why digital is better.
And Tarantino on the other side just saying bunch of romantic things about film that didn't say much.
Deakins is amazing.
Really engaging piece, great job.
🙏
didn't think the gear portion would be so interesting, but the bit about not using anamorphic was cool to know! Thanks
Glad you found it interesting. I have a video coming up on anamorphic lenses.
@@InDepthCine sweet! Looking forward to it
Thank you for this incredible channel. I’ve been searching for a channel like this for a long time!
Thanks for watching. I'll try to keep making more of these videos when I have the time.
I like drawing and photography and it helped me find my passion for finding the right frames. I've been writing a script but for some odd reason i thought it was mediocre and lacks the dept. But realizing that masters like Roger dekens make story boards inspired me.
Thankyou for this video. This A great channel that every Cinephile should follow.
Great video. I’ve noticed that both Roger Deakins and the late great Conrad Hall tend to prefer background light separation (often motivated by practicals) over edge or rim lighting which totally resonates with me. Creates a much more natural chiaroscuro look.
what a beautiful video, what a precious channel. the way you talk about the technical aspects without taking away what is really important. I still learn so much but still ground myself to the philosophy of all that i learn. thank you for being a free learning medium
Thanks for this. Amazing effort putting it all together.
Your channel really delivers quality insight on the efforts and development of these cinematographers and I truly commend your work.
I super love your channel! Super helpful! Thank you!
Fantastic, well done!

Great channel! Please do Bradford Young when you have a chance
My newest video is on Bradford
It took 3 yeas to find this channel for learning something very high end! Thank you! Subscribed!
Amazing video dude. Love Deakins, he has a really great eye and understanding for the texture and composition of cinema.
one of my favourite cinematographers, I absolutely love his shots!
Empire of Light looked amazing. So beautifully shot… with a lot of signature Deakins shots that us fans have to come to love. This Oscar nomination is his SIXTEENTH!!!!! 🤯 and much deserved. Cheers to Mr. Deakins and his team!!!
Amazing channel and content. I especially love how in-depth you go with every aspect of film making, from talking about specific prime lenses to more general concepts. Keep it up!!
I mean his name is In Depth Cine

amazing channel man, not sure how i havent discovered it earlier. keep it up! cheers
This channel is awesome! Really helps with my own work ! Do you do cinematography?
Super nice video. Thank you!
Superb sir Thanks for the video
how exactly does Deakins create his LUTs? Does he go location scouting, take sample images in the flat picture profile and then pre-build LUTs that way for the various situations?
Nice question. In the article in the description Deakins describes how he worked with his colourist Mitch Paulson at EFilm to develop a LUT when the Alexa came out.
So originally I imagine he would've probably brought in some Alexa test footage and then graded it with his colourist until they had a general LUT that he was happy with. He doesn't mention if he uses one LUT or if he has different LUTs for different lighting conditions (day/night/etc).
This LUT then gives his colourist an idea of what look he wants, so when they do the final grade he'll tweak the colour based on this LUT.
@@InDepthCine ah ok, will definitely check out the article. Thanks for the quick reply!
From the sounds of things back when he shot In Time he worked with a colorist to create a LUT that was based on his work on True Grit. I think he's used that same LUT ever since.
@@InDepthCine check out the Team Deakins podcast, he goes into creating LUTs in depth in one of the episodes :)
Roger dekins one of the best cinematographer in the World i like Very Much he is best
Good stuff man, thank you!
whata beautiful video, man!
Thank you for a throughly enjoyable video
Man im glad I found this channel
Roger Deakins + Nolan or Villenueve + Hans Zimmer = dream team
Solid analysis, thank you
Glad you enjoyed the video
My new favorite channel
One of my favourite DOPs. He is a legend indeed.
Next: DARIUS KHONDJI. Please make a video essay on Darius Khondji. I think Mr Khondji is among the all-time greatests.
He shot everything on 1917 with the 40mm. Except for the bunker scene which was 35 and the river scene which was 47mm. I think the 40mm field of view (32mm on Alexa open gate and 27ish mm on film) is is got to focal length.
I would really love to see an analysis of Freddie Young's cinematography.
My first time here.
Indeed, it’s an excellent and informative video. Thank you. Already subscribed.
Thanks for subscribing. Glad you found it informative!
Thank u for your channel
I am loving it
Great video! Where do you get your music from, because it's really relaxing
Nice content 👌
Keep it up 👍
loved it
great video!! god praise Deakins.
God praise Deakins haha
One day you will have million subs, amazing work you are doing here on UA-cam
Great channel! Love it as a movie enthousiaste. One suggestions maybe turn the music a bit down in volume, it is to loud at some times :). Keep up the great video's!
This content is amazing !!
🙏
very informative and helpful. thank you. :)
Dénis Villeneuve is pronounced “de-NEE VEE-nove” (rhymes with bee dove). The surname is old French for new town, and “Villle” is a single word pronounced as Vee
Just a tiny niggle in an amazing well-researched video.
Reminds me of the Spanish last name Villanueva, which also means the same thing.
He's a true inspiration
As always, this is a wonderful video! Is there any chance you might do a Cinematography Style breakdown of Greig Fraser?
Thanks. He's on the list. I'm excited to see how he shoots Dune!
@@InDepthCine Same, but I'm even more excited to see how he films Matt Reeves' The Batman. No doubt both that and Dune will look stunning.
Well Done!
Where do you find information on the specific lenses and cameras used in each movie?
I love this channel
Thanks for this video, could you cover Malik Hassan Sayeed? Particularly for his work on Belly, I think his one of the best cinematographers that doesn’t get coverage.
This is gold
This channel is amazing....can you do an analysis on Gordon Willis' work on Godfather I & II
Definitely at some stage. Thanks for watching!
Lol I didn’t know that the special lenses used in The assassination of Jesse James was called “deakinizer”
can you do cinematography breakdown on blade runner 2049 and 1917 ?
AMAZING VIDEO!!!!!!!
Thanks Ian
Please do a research on Rajeev Ravi an Indian cinematographer. His works include
Gangs of Wasseypur (1 and 2) - Netflix
Gulaal
Udta Punjab - Netflix
Liar's Dice - Netflix
Moothon - Zee5
Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum - Disney+Hotstar
Monsoon Shootout - Disney+Hotstar
Where do you get the storyboards/notes for the No Country for Old Men stuff?
Where do you get the high quality bits pictures or storyboard Scans from? :) working on a presentation about deakins for Uni
dude, you are inspiring me. thank you
Deakins' cinematography is pretty inspiring!
@@InDepthCine totally agree! i have been studying and doing my best to learn from his techniques and implement them into my own videos. love his use of framing by far
Deakins is one of the best men behind the camera, since Freddy young
i really need to know what the song used in the background is here 9:37 its so beautiful
Obviously, very informative and knowledgeable. My only suggestion would be to use a different style of music. I know the music here kind of suggests a calm that is Deakins; however, it really can lull one into sleep. This is the type of music I use at bedtime.
Superb videos! Can you do one on Janusz Kaminski? Minority report is so different from Catch Me If You Can and so are all his Spielberg movies...A very interesting and versatile DOP
Also some Indian DOP requests : Santosh Sivan( Dil Se, Urumi, Iruvar) , and Pankaj Kumar ( Ship of Thesus, Tumbaad)
Would you consider doing a video like this on Larry Fong?
what music did you use at conclusion part 8:55 ?
May I ask where you found all the ungraded shots from 1917?
What is name of the background music of the video?
What song was used in this video? Great analysis of my absolute favorite cinematographer.
you can find it by searching up magenta yoga meditation :D
King ❤️❤️❤️❤️
What film is the shot at 3:26-3:31 from??
Aka`zing. Thanks
Superb video! Sad, there was no mention of his wife, though. They're a creative team that work together on these movies.
