No need to register it if it’s still the same battery. It’s only for new batteries so that the computer knows not to overcharged it like it has to with older batteries
You register the battery after you have replaced it. Registering is just telling the car computer that the battery has been replaced and it can start charging it like a new battery rather than an old one. If you change the battery and it’s a different capacity from the one you took out, you’ll have to program it aka letting the computer know it’s not the same.

I don’t think any of them can tell you if your current one is registered, only when the last time a battery was registered. I used Launch x431 recently and it can do both. I made a review of this scanner a few days ago.
Not for registering, only for programming. If you are swapping the battery for the same Ah, you just code it aka tell the car you've changed the battery. If you are upgrading the battery to a bigger size, you have to code the and then register the battery. I have a video on that.
I'm wondering if this applies to a 2005 x5 and if it's the reason my new battery only lasted a year or so. It's so hard finding a good mechanic. Edit: Some forums are saying the smart charging system started in 2006, so maybe that's not my issue.
If you are unlucky, the battery wasn't "quite perfect" from the manufacturer. It doesn't help one if 999 out of 1000 are good, if you get that "last" one. But on the other hand, are all "systems" in the car working perfectly? That isn't that easy to answer, as there is a sliding scale of what is good/bad enough.
Hi again, just a note I have talked to a couple mechanics and they have indicated that its not necessary to register. How can we get the truth on this subject? the thing is that the IBS should track the voltage of any installed battery if it truly is intelligent and no need to tell the IBS or ECU that a new battery has been installed. and how would telling the IBS make it charge differently? some batteries last 4 years and some last over 10 years.
nice video , verry helpfull , what is the diffrence between register and code a battery , i want to change mi f10 battery with differente specs cca vs original bmw battery , is it the same procedure . i have ancel bm700 . tks
Registering the battery means you are replacing the old battery with the same spec battery. Coding a battery would be what you are trying to do and install a different spec battery. The scanner claims to be able to 'register' different spec batteries, but I have not tested this myself, so I cannot confirm 100%. Thanks for watching.
Shouldn't be a big issue. What it will do is charge your older battery less, so worst comes to worst your battery won't be getting as charged up as before.
The scanner reports in miles for most of the functions; however, when registering a battery, it's pulling information straight from the car and reporting as provided (which is in KM since it's a German car). This will not register an Audi battery. Please see my response on your other comment for details. Thanks for watching!
Hi. Did you just change your battery as you wouldn't want to register a battery if not? Also does that scan tool do non-bmw batteries? I changed mine which was 10 years old (yes very tired battery) but my scan tool wouldn't register the battery correctly.. It asked for the code on the battery and noted the change but it stated that it couldn't register it in the bmw system. My battery was the correct amp rating as the original and was the same manufacturer as bmw but just not purchased from bmw..
Hi Mark, In my case the battery was changed right before I bought the car, but they never registered it as you saw in the video. There was no record of battery renewal at all. I figured it would be better to register it if it's not too late. The car was for sale by a dealer before sent to an auction, so I guess they just put a battery in and left it at that. It is not a BMW battery and the scanner registered it alright, I can't vouch on all models, though.
I don’t see that option. The closest I can see is the steering angle sensor function which initializes the steering column switch cluster (the wheel angle sensor).

Does this tool automatically detect the difference between a regular lead acid and an AGM battery at the time of registering like if I'm upgrading from a regular lead acid to an AGM battery or do you have to input that information manually?
If you change the battery Ah you have to code.( like from a 90 Ah to a 80 Ah.) If you replace with the same size battery you do not have to code only register. You have to register all battery replacements in the BMW/MINI if it has an IBS system which I think started in 2007 or so.
so the bm700 registers new battery if it has higher specs? does it do that automatically? then i think the bmw ecu has to be reset because it has been adjusting for the old battery as it gets weaker. is that correct? how do we reset it to function efficiently with a new good battery so it doesnt over compensate on the new battery as if it were still the aged battery?
That's what the battery registration does. It tells the ECU that you have put in a new battery and it will charge it as such. There are 2 options, one to register a battery that is exactly the same as the old one and one that has different values.
@@SimpleCarGuy right, but if its different speced battery. a simple registration will not work because the computer will charge it per the old batteries specs. and that will kill a new battery with different specs. so just registering any battery wont work.

I'm curious about something: My iDrive has been been resetting every time I start my vehicle, forgetting phones that I've paired with each time. I'm wondering if this is a symptom of a worn down battery? Did you encounter any such tell-tale symptoms when you battery gets worn down?
I didn't encounter any issues like that, but it could be your issue. If you can, maybe leave the car on a trickle charger to see if it happens with the car connected. In my previous BMW, I had the car forget clock and some personalization, but never phone pairing.
@@SimpleCarGuy This helps narrow things down, I believe, as I've had some personalization forgotten too (seat position, radio stations). Will see what I can do about trickle charge setup. Thanks!

Maybe that´s becourse it´s an "M"? Can´t figure it out whats wrong. Everything else is working fine with this tool, incl. batterytest (Last 3 days voltage recorded) and so on :-(
As you seem to believe is that Ah of the new battery should be registered... I have read in other places that a good tool registers the brand of the new battery, the Ah, and some other parameters. So I don't think this tool is that good, after all. Maybe it's enough if the new battery is exactly the same as the original, or is a original BMW battery. But in my F25/X3 2011 I think the original battery comes from an American supplier, and here in Europe an original battery may come from Varta... The American brand isn't on the market in Europe?!
question. You have selected the 2nd option for the first registration and then you selected option 1 for the second registration. I'm not clear on this. is there any difference between the option 1(4:11) and option 2 (4:47)? Thanks!
I was just showing that there are 2 different options. One registers a battery that is the same as the previous one and the other options allows to register a battery with lower or higher capacity.

Your video is pretty straight forward and clear. I know it's just a matter of time when I'll have to change my battery. Question: What if I'm changing from a Lead Acid to an AGM with the same Amp Hour 80 rating, is the process still as straight forward changing and registering the new battery?
I believe the scanner assumes you are swapping out the battery with the same specs as what the car came with originally. You cannot modify the settings with this tool. Thanks for watching!
Hello, I have a 2012 BMW X5. I bought the scanner a few months ago. I am about to out the battery to the car. I have a question. Last time I disconnected the battery to work on the car. The footwell module blew out. Fortunately it was under warranty so I had it replaced. The battery is old now and needs to be replaced. Should I replace it myself and use the scanner to register the battery or should I take it to the shop and have them do it and not take the chance of blowing out the footwell module again? Thanks in advance.
Well, I can't really make that decision for ya. I have removed and disconnected many batteries on BMWs and have never had any issues, so to me that's pretty strange. I would replace it myself, but I try to do all of the work myself and just be very careful and only disconnect the battery when the car is off.
It good but here the flaw. What happen if you get the battery with a slightly higher amp, how can you go in and adjust the setting. It need to correct the amp, you don't want ecu send info in to new battery when it not a properly right Ah, may mess it up battery. Who know!!!
So, there are 2 options, one is for changing the same battery and the other is for changing the type or capacity. You do not have to specify, but your computer will then learn the new battery. I don't 100% trust this second option, but I have no evidence against it either.
The dealer wanted to charge me 500 dollars to change batter on mini cooper. So 300 for the battery itself and 179.99 to program and register the battery

Great video and wish I watched this first. I selected 1 (same capacity) when I replaced my battery though I noticed you selected 2 (installation of battery with higher/lower capacity). Should I have selected 2 and if so can I just repeat the procedure again?
Did you replace the battery with the same capacity as the old one or was it a little bit different?
@@SimpleCarGuy thanks for your reply. I replaced the original battery (AGM 90Ah 900A (en)) for a Bosch (AGM 95Ah 850A (en)).

A lot of people online are saying this one will not register a new battery on an E 60
every time that i put a new battery i need to use the scan ?
That is correct. Otherwise your battery will die much faster as it will be overcharged.
@@SimpleCarGuy thanks but my battery is missing the sensor smart right ,and i don't have money to buy a new one now ..u think i can drive normal without that sensor ?
Does this include 2003 530i?
you should not need to register as you should not have an IBS in the model year. I think the system started in 2007
Just bought this tool to reset my 2008 x3 and battery management is not one of the options. Im assuming it does not need battery registration
Hi, thanks for the video, does anyone know of a scanner that can check if my current battery has been registered to my car 2011 BMW 328xi Drive? and that will be able to fully register a new battery, going from lead acid to AGM? Allowing me to enter all parameters of the new battery? Thx, Rob
I don’t think any of them can tell you if your current one is registered, only when the last time a battery was registered. I used Launch x431 recently and it can do both. I made a review of this scanner a few days ago.
thanks so much@@SimpleCarGuy
so, no need to enter the ah manually?
Not for registering, only for programming.
If you are swapping the battery for the same Ah, you just code it aka tell the car you've changed the battery.
If you are upgrading the battery to a bigger size, you have to code the and then register the battery. I have a video on that.
good video. But how about change betwen Led acid to Agm battery
That's option number 2 if I remember correctly. Pause at 4:14, it has a description.
Tks a lot 👍

¿Do you know if this would work for a BMW X3 F25 2013?
Yes, it would
Just wondering if someone registers a new battery by mistake (ie no battery change and still has the old 4 year battery in place), any issues?
Shouldn't be a big issue. What it will do is charge your older battery less, so worst comes to worst your battery won't be getting as charged up as before.
I replace my battery two days ago I already use it can I still register it?
Yes, you can.
Thanks, can this be changed from KM to Miles? Also can this scan codes for Audi & register their battery as well? Thanks
Hi Mark,
In my case the battery was changed right before I bought the car, but they never registered it as you saw in the video. There was no record of battery renewal at all. I figured it would be better to register it if it's not too late. The car was for sale by a dealer before sent to an auction, so I guess they just put a battery in and left it at that. It is not a BMW battery and the scanner registered it alright, I can't vouch on all models, though.
Awesome, thanks man! I've ordered one of these for my 1 series!
I did this but when I go to register it says error? Help!? I have a bmw 2006 325xi….

i had a bmw x5 2017 and i replacing my battery but theres two battery so my question is should i need to register the two battery?

does it work on f10 m5
Yes, it should work on the f10 m5.

@@Griffssx Thanks! Stay well.
I've just installed a 95aH AGM battery. Is that a plug and play battery? Do I need to register it?
You have to register it.
Hey, I'm having an issue where my BM500 is saying the battery cannot be replaced "No communication with IBS or Engine Electronics". Anyone have any idea what the issue may be? IBS seems to be connected
Engine has to be off, and accessories mode on. (Put key fob in and hit the push to start button i believe 3 times, without touching the brake)
My BM700 won’t go to the screen with the three options. Just says it can’t register the battery. Infuriating. And can ONLY update it with windows.
You don't say anything about the replacement battery. Is it OEM?
That doesn’t matter that much. You just have to have the correct specs for your car. Cranking amps, capacity, battery composition etc.
Does this tool automatically detect the difference between a regular lead acid and an AGM battery at the time of registering like if I'm upgrading from a regular lead acid to an AGM battery or do you have to input that information manually?
This tool will not allow you to program a new battery in as far as I'm aware. It allows you to register a the same battery when it is replaced.
I understand u did a register but what about coding ? I’ve heard is two different things u have to do ? Correct me if I’m wrong .
@@SimpleCarGuyok didn't find my scanner giving me options to put in specs of battery. Just like you showed, just seems to register the mileage of car at registration.
Thanks!
Hi! Bought the Ancel BM700 for my 2011 E70 X5M. When entering the battery-section on the Ancel, it tells my that the option for "registering the battery is disabled". Maybe that´s becourse it´s an "M"? Can´t figure it out whats wrong. Everything else is working fine with this tool, incl. batterytest (Last 3 days voltage recorded) and so on :-(
I don't know much about the M cars, does this one have the lithium battery by chance? I know those are treated differently.
did you ever figure it out?
@@SimpleCarGuy No, just an ordinary battery. Nothing special at all!
Never had to do that with E82. just change out battery.
Hi
Can you register a lower or higher capacity battery with this tool
Thank you for the great video 👍
As you seem to believe is that Ah of the new battery should be registered... I have read in other places that a good tool registers the brand of the new battery, the Ah, and some other parameters. So I don't think this tool is that good, after all.
Maybe it's enough if the new battery is exactly the same as the original, or is a original BMW battery.
But in my F25/X3 2011 I think the original battery comes from an American supplier, and here in Europe an original battery may come from Varta... The American brand isn't on the market in Europe?!
Thanks for the class, it works perfectly!!

Is it better to purchase a batter that has a higher capacity ?

Hello,Great video,I have 3 scan tools,A Carly,An Autophix 5900 which is like your Ancel,And I’ve recently bought a Topdon Artilink 600,I used the Autophix to register a new battery 2weeks ago,it gives no info,So I tried Carly,It gives you a choice of different batteries AGM,Lead acid,Calcium etc,And battery capacity etc 85,90,105 mah etc,But my battery is an AGM 95 mah HSB019,I checked this on my new Topdon this morning and it states the last battery registration was a lead-acid at 91mah,Completely wrong info,I trust the Topdon over the others due to spec etc,I heard Carly battery reg doesn’t work,I went to the hospital the other day (25 miles round trip),I have an Ancel Bm200 pro battery monitor in the car,When I left here the state of charge SOC was at 98%,When I got home it was at 51%,I don’t know what the hell is going on.
Excellent video, thanks for the info. Just done the battery change, waiting for Amazon to delivery your recommended scanner.
Glad it helped, it's an easy job and a shame BMW charges so much for it!
How did you make out
This only works if you replace with exactly the same spec battery. Other devices will allow you to re-code with the new specs
Yes, registration and coding are different things. I haven’t heard a video on coding the battery
Hate to break this to you, but the alternator spins all the time when the engine is running.
As you quite rightly said, its nothing complicated.
@@SimpleCarGuy Thanks for the reply...
Thanks for the video! I just got my bm700, am I also able to code the battery with this tool?

You're not wrong
Hello,
I have a 2012 BMW X5.
I would replace it myself, but I try to do all of the work myself and just be very careful and only disconnect the battery when the car is off.
thank you for making this video! I bought the tool but I misplaced the manual. this made it super easy!!!!
Thank you very much.well explained!
THNXS!!
good stuff.
The dealer wanted to charge me 500 dollars to change batter on mini cooper. So 300 for the battery itself and 179.99 to program and register the battery
Well, you can get the scanner and program it yourself for less AND have a nice useful tool after!
Temu sells this 😂😂
With all hidden features in a BMW I find it ridiculous that BMW did not add battery registration as one of the hidden features in their cars! BMW dealers and diagnostic owners (which they got from some supplier) and they're not BMW experts, rip you as BMW owner off should you allow them to register a battery!
Thx brother...
