Honestly, more than the political messages themselves, the bigger message I took from this lovely film is how two men w/opposing political views can still support, respect, and encourage one another in the course of it. It's such a sweet, beautiful notion---one that has disappeared in the diatribes of furied faces in today's political news. Kindness and decorum has become a lost, unpracticed art. This movie brought a tear to my eye.
I agree. This was a lovely example of how people should treat each other regardless of their political differences. Should be required viewing for anyone venturing into politics.
I love these old movies. No foul language, no long drawn out sex scenes, no nudity. I'm not a prude but it gets a bit boring when they drag those scenes on. I have watched a few old movies lately and thoroughly enjoyed them. Simpler times. Thank you for putting them on
I love "My Man Godfrey," too! It was released in 1936, and it is interesting to note that William Powell had been married to Carole Lombard, his co-star, from 1931-33. They were able to remain friends and sure worked well in that movie. Neither of them had remarried at the time. (She married Clark Gable in 1939, & he married Diana Lewis in 1940.) Sadly, Carole died in a plane crash in 1942, age 33.
First time I have seen this film. I fully agree with so many of the comments about the style, the 'class', both of the script and the cast. It is 'delicious' to watch. William Powell was simply a superb actor, across SO many films.
How refreshing to see William Powell, once again, with an excellent cast, and a quite different premise for a movie. Not even a thought of inserting a curse word in the script, or a scene with naked actors, but a plot involving love and human decency in the midst of family, political debate and stable minds, while, as always, highlighting the classes.
What’s so bad about naked actors? If it fits the film, and they’re of age, naked actors can be a tearjerker, a laugh, a shock, sexy, or just plain beautiful. I respect every actor who decides to unrobe for a good role, in service to the role. We were born naked, and we go naked (when the Musselin shirt has rotted), nakedness is natural.

I am a William Powell fan and have only heard of this movie recently. It was so nice to see it! There is a class to these old movies that does not exist today - or for several years, actually. It seems that today's movies don't rely on an actor's abilities as much, or skill with directing or cinematography. Maybe I'm just biased because I dearly love the movies from the 30's through 60's...Anyway, thank you for making it possible to watch a gem from the past.
Hilarious. Aahhhh could you just imagine the politicians of today being so eloquent, open-minded and unthreatened by their oppossors? It would be a delight to see people disagree yet, still treat one another with respect. Not a fan of Annabella but Powell. In a class all by himself.
I totally agree. If people were that civilized!!! but also take note this is posed as in HUNGARY and he is socialist right next to Germany and Russia... Great message to keep more peace!!!
many politicians of nowadays are sold and bought in open market...those who have the most money and power can buy as many politicians as they want...and the funny thing is that we put them in their high horse chairs and they never ever ever look for the best deals for the common people...
I’ve never seen William Powell in a movie before, but now I can understand why many consider him their favorite actor. He is very likable and a capable actor.

Fabulous Bill Powell- what a cinema treasure (especially with Myrna Loy) . We need that wit now. I'd watch him reading the phone book. Seems to reprising a Godfrey character- worth a retread. Powell once again gives voice of a servant having more class than his bosses! Only he could pull this off. Ps lovely very french Annabella Ty Powers first wife.
Oh, I simply love William Powell! What a fine actor! I always loved his 'Little Man's movies, in which he paired with another of the finest artists, Myrna Loy. That pair was a sensation for so many years! Both were extremely spontaneous, had great sense of timing, and a very easy presence on the screen. They entertained generations of movie goers. Hats off to both...

I'm 45 and have now started delving into the movies of the 30s and 40's, since Hollywood has started to suck so much in the last 15 years. It's awesome to see other fans of him. In 1931 a Detroit heiress ran away from home with the family chauffeur... and built a mansion in Santa Monica where they entertained lots of Hollywood stars and producers. @Sarah B. - The most fun Powell movies of all are probably the "Thin Man" series, partnered with Myrna Loy and Asta the terrier - a match made in film heaven. Wise cracking all over the place!
Absolutely Delightful Film! I never heard of this or have seen this one and loved it! Thank you so much for sharing it. The Baroness, played by Annabella is so Beautiful! [ see note].More so than any of the Actors of this time period. All of the Actors played their characters so convincingly, drawing the audience in and immersing us into this wonderfully written play. Bravo! Note: Anabella, was the stage name for French born Actor/ Actress Suzane Georgette Chapentier. Born 14, July 1907 in Saint Mauredes Fosses, France. She was an accomplished actor in France when Hollywood discovered her. Her first marriage lasted only two years, 1930-1932 when her husband died. They had a daughter, Anne, born in April 1928. Anabella remarried in 1934 to another French Actor, Jean Murat. Yet this was when Anabella's career would take off as she was going to sign a contract with Twentieth Century Fox Studio's, then run by Darryl F. Zanuk. She starred with Henry Fonda in 1937 a British film under TCF contract named; "Wings of the Many" She would soon go to Hollywood to co-star with Tyrone Power in Suez, where inevitably they would fall in love and against Zanuck's offer to give her a "Multi-Million Dollar Movie Deal, tht would take her overseas, because he didn't want Power to marry anyone, she refused! What the executive did next is appalling! Tyrone and Anabella went to France where she obtained her divorce from Jean Murat. They got married and honeymooners in Rome. Zanuck was so angry he stopped casting Anabelle in movies and took this a,step further! Because she was under contract, he wouldn't even loan her out to other Studios asking for her? Meanwhile, WWII was in full swing and Tyrone signed on and left! But not before making two trips to France to first retrieve Anabella's Mother, who moved in with them, and before returning Anabella's brother was shot and killed by the Nazi's! She was able to get her daughter Anne and return. Tyrone adopted Anne legally. There's more to the story.... It's disgusting how much power Hollywood held over their Actors lives. If any mistakes were made, they are my own in spelling or interpretation.
I really enjoyed this film. Well acted and all the actors and dancers were beautifully turned out. I hope to see more of these sort of innocent but fun films. Thank you for sharing this film.

William Powell is a wonderful actor and I find him very charming, maybe not handsome like Clark Gable or the like, but I would marry him any day. I am 43 and expected to watch what is "popular" these days, but I grew up watching these classic movies with my Grandmother. Since I have brought my son up to watch classics and a "gentleman" which is so scarce these days. Maybe everything wasn't "perfect" a long time ago but I would love to go back in time when women were ladies and men were gentlemen. True everything wasn't always equal, but it still isn't and I would rather be treated like a delicate helpless flower than the way I have been treated in this day and age. Only one thing I would take with me, the better medical and helpful technology, I could care less about cell phones, social media, and the internet. Anyone else feel the same?

A delightful movie! William Powell and his work never disappoints! A perfect gentleman and one to be admired and perhaps even loved❣️
many politicians of nowadays are sold and bought in open market...those who have the most money and power can buy as many politicians as they want...and the funny thing is that we put them in their high horse chairs and they never ever ever look for the best deals for the common people...
@@lolitabonita08 Spot on! You are so very right. Stay safe and GOD bless.
@@dalehood1846 thanks Blessings to you and yours.
Wonderful! I laughed and cried! The worlds best butler!!❤️😀
After 2 years I am back again enjoying this delightful movie
I'd never heard of Annabella, before or since -- but she was excellent, and paired magnificently with William Powell.
I do believe that she was once married to Rex Harrison.
@@thegreencat9947 Not Harrison, she married Tyrone Power.
I’ve never seen William Powell in a movie before, but now I can understand why many consider him their favorite actor. He is very likable and a capable actor.
Watch my man Godfrey the black and white version it’s amazing
mybabba, Have you seen 'The Thin Man' episodes where William Powell the gum show detective and his wife Myrna Lloyd go solving crime after crime.
You should see him in the Thin Man movies.
@@auletjohnast03638 - That's 'gum shoe', soft soles so that a detective won't be heard sneaking about. The whole series is a lot of fun. Myrna Loy and Asta the terrier were perfect partners for him. Wise cracking galore!
You might find the Thin Man series to your liking.
I am not sure what I watch these for more.. the actors, the script or the stage sets ... who am I kidding ?? its the whole package.
William Powell was the very best!
What a superb movie, they don't get better than this!
Hats off to both...
mukund phanasalkar Do you mean the Thin Man movies? Of did he do another series with Myrna Loy?
I'm a huge huge fan of William Powell. It is the Thin Man you're thinking about. I'm 45 and have now started delving into the movies of the 30s and 40's, since Hollywood has started to suck so much in the last 15 years. It's awesome to see other fans of him. If you haven't seen it, I would recommend "Life With Father" for one of his most entertaining performances.
@@francisdrake6622 "Life With Father" was a really good movie.
Yes indeed!! Myrna Loy William Powell are two of my favorite and "The Thin Man" movies are great!! upcoming week/TCM all of the Thin Man movies \will be on this upcoming week
thanks I had them all recorded and watched ~
Superb movie! Flawless. Loved it!
Worth watching again and again. ❤❤❤❤❤
What a lovely movie with very significant underline points regarding equality and reality of social cast. Wonderful!
This movie is 19 years away from being 100 yrs old! My, I feel old!
dont you mean 9yrs? we are old lol
Donna Morales o my goodness, say it isn’t so..😳. These are my favorite movies
Fred Collari 19
Donna Morales sometimes the oldest things are the freshest things😊
Haaahaha 😄 cracks me up, with the "Ancient movies I watch! it's as though I go back in time while I'm watching some of them and have to snap myself back into this era when they're over. Lol some it's too bad there wasn't a part ll 💕It's hard to get interested in, shall I call "modern-day movies" I'll start to watch 1and end up turning it off and naturally watch my recordings, an Irene Dunne, Ethel, John, Lionel Barrymore, Jean Arthur, Cary Grant, Myrna Loy, William Powell, Margaret O'Brien, Gene Tierney, Susan Hayward, Henry Fonda, Shirley Temple, Clifton Webb as Mister Belvedere what a hoot, I can watch them over and over, he's hysterical! 😂 and the list goes on....I have no internet & can't watch many UA-cam movies anymore n' there are some good ones on here! Sorry bout that I got carried away 🎥🎬💫💃
The actor playing the Baron (Georg) - Joseph Schildkraut - was very accomplished and played a great weasel too. He did the same in The Shop Around the Corner, Christmas movie.
This is actually a good movie with a clever story. The sound is a bit unclear but still
manageable. I must say I enjoyed it to the end and probably will like seeing it again.
Annabella is mumbling in a foreign accent, too; that doesn't help.
I think the audio is clear, considering the age of the tape. I wish they made movies like these today.
@@melvynobrien6193 Yes! I had so much trouble understanding her! Although she was easier to understand after the first scene or two.
@@melvynobrien6193 - And why did she have such a thick accent when her parents did not? They had that upper crust British boarding school voice. Silly mis-match.
What a great movie! I'm have become addicted to William Powell!
William Powell with the always delightful Nigel Bruce in a movie I have never seen before .It doesn’t get any better than this!
I have never seen a bad picture with William Powell as the star. He is truly the most talented singer and best actor in early Hollywood. This picture was made the year I was born, and I have seen and enjoyed it twice.
In 1931 a Detroit heiress ran away from home with the family chauffeur... and built a mansion in Santa Monica where they entertained lots of Hollywood stars and producers.
If you ever watch Beverly Hills Cop- the mansion they have the shootout in at the end is the house they built. This and similar movies around this period were inspired by this couple’s real life.
I love you know this. Thank you very much for sharing this wonderful piece of history.
What are their names?
@@bcsurvivor4713 I've no idea.
@@bcsurvivor4713 It was a decade ago I saw the story in a book all about the various old properties in that area... I think the couple was named Cooper- The house was called Villa Ruchello.
Great movie! Thanks for this gem with William Powell. Adorable.
Totally enjoyable 💐🌿🌻

Thank you for sharing this wonderful movie I enjoyed it so much love William Powell and old black and white movies grew up watching them 💜💜
At first after the butler put the coat on him and he was admiring himself in the mirror, I'd have swore he was checking a phone!!!🤣🤣🤣
Seen this movie 4 times across the years. Every once in a while, when I welcome some lighthearted entertainment with a good plot and good acting, I head to my "sure thing" movies. This one fulfills in every way.
Thanks for this channel. Love escaping back to a time of manners, and respect.
Powell was engaged to Jean Harlow when she died at age 26. He had given her a 98 carat sapphire ring which was jaw dropping.
Love William Powell and had never seen this one ~ THX !!!
Annabella was Tyrone Powers first wife who was 7 years older than he was. They divorced, Power married and divorced Linda Christain. He asked Annabella to take him back but she declined.
hello....another great film with great actor....thank you xxx
Remarkable how butlers were really faithful to their bosses and they would do snything to keep them happy for no benefit.
I didn't know of this actor until seeing ''MR PEABODY AND THE MERMAID 1948''. Just love the nostalgia and the homey feel these films give you. xxx
Such a charming disposition, dignified yet kind.
@Charles Harrington Jr.hi Charles, the dad and William Powell.
William Powell, great actor, who I think was never given the accolades he deserved. Loved his acting in this role. 😊
Love William Powell. Wonderful actor in anything he's in.
Agreed! Class and wit and fun. We so need actors like him now.
Somptuous, well mannered, respect to the core, distinction...and love. I had a great time, tks!
This is so good, I've foregone new movies and started watching these!
Good move.
Excellent move! Even better if you spring for commercial free 13.99 a month UA-cam which you can then download and cast to your TV.
These newer subscription services don't offer completely commercial free at the least besides having nothing good or worthy and requiring an expensive home WiFi package for "seamless" streaming. 🙄🙄
I'd never heard of this movie before and I have some how missed William Powell movies but now, I want to watch all of them. I loved this film and watched it with an unintentional grin the whole time. All of the actors were great but the mother, she had me rolling lol. Wonderful film, thank you so much for uploading and I definitely will subscribe.
IM RIGHT WITH YOU ON WILLIAM POWELL
@Sarah B. - The most fun Powell movies of all are probably the "Thin Man" series, partnered with Myrna Loy and Asta the terrier - a match made in film heaven. Wise cracking all over the place!
@@MossyMozart agree wholeheartedly, I like William Powell, but he's at his best in the "Thin Man" series.
William Powell is one of the very best! I alo would love movies of him together with Myrna Loy. They were just great!!!!
William Powell, masterful and witty and the beautiful Annabella is always a pleasure. Well done.
I have watched & enjoyed it before.
I am greatly enjoying watching this movie again.
Many more of this type of movie, PLEASE!
The classics never disappoint, do they?
The comic timing of William Powell is excellent
I so agree on his timing and physical comedic skills. Yet debenoir
He had a gift, all right. Often imitated but never duplicated. He had great snappy patter.
Debonair, you mean
Yes, especially in the “Thin Man” movies with Myrna Loy. They both are my favorites.
@@wcn111 - He, Myrna Loy, and Asta were in a WHOLE SERIES of "Thin Man" movies. I enjoy the all.
Thank for such a lovely movie, loved the dry wit.
That man had a way to make a woman feel like she is the only one in the world. Love William Powell.
Zanuk. She starred with Henry Fonda in 1937 a British film under TCF contract named; "Wings of the Many"
She would soon go to Hollywood to co-star with Tyrone Power in Suez, where inevitably they would fall in love and against Zanuck's offer to give her a "Multi-Million Dollar Movie Deal, tht would take her overseas, because he didn't want Power to marry anyone, she refused!
YOU CERTAINLY are not a person of few words and much of what you wrote is rissoles and non descriptive.
Excellent movie! Love the style, love the class!
This movie s great So interesting and full of surprises and of course the great acting of William Powell.
I loved this movie! William Powell is great in everything he’s been in! Love it just as much as My Man Godfrey! ♥️💕

William Powell -- an actor's actor, IMO.
I really enjoyed this film. Well acted and all the actors and dancers were beautifully turned out. I hope to see more of these sort of innocent but fun films. Thank you for sharing this film.
Thanku Silver Screen for this movie... Ive not seen this movie but I thoroughly enjoyd it .... a very wonderful story with our wonderful actors from those days very happy i watchd it ❤
I agree William Powell was one of my favorite actors always a delight to watch
I hope to live long enough to watch this annually for many years to come.
oh my, what a wonderful romantic ending... I was hoping that they were in love with each other. I could spend all day watching classic movies instead of the garbage on tv or even movies.
I grew up watching these wonderful old films with my grandmother as well! There is something special about them and they have a quality that is long gone but we can keep them alive and enjoy them here. Don't forget to subscribe as there are many films on the playlists that I have created. Enjoy and thanks so much!
WOW scary i feel like am the one who wrote this! The way i see it there is no "perfect" generation but the
past was more better compare to the now
Hear! Hear! I agree with you. I know things weren't perfect back in that era but there are some really uncouth and despicable men out there nowadays and when I grew up.
@@silverscreenclassics9210 yes I subscribed as soon as I found you! I feel the same. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for uploading these treasures!!!😊
@@aslan9334 sadly its true. My son's generation (15 years old) is HORRIBLE. My son thank goodness is a good boy because I brought him up old fashioned . No one is watching these kids now as both parents go to work so they get spoiled to "shut up" and ignored because the parents are exhausted. 😿
Such a great movie…just loved it‼️Lighthearted, and appropriate for these times😂
Superb effort!
Well conceived story!
Convincing acting!

William Powell’s persona reminds me greatly of the Renaissance Black Director Oscar Devereaux Micheaux💎This is one reason I’m always in search of both their artistry💎
