- Julia Ross (Nina Foch) secures employment as an aid to a wealthy widow, Mrs. Hughes (Dame May Whitty), and goes to live at her house. Two days later, she awakens in a different house in different clothes and with a new identity.

These old movies can proudly hold their own in todays electronic age - thank you for posting - I am 82 years old and do appreciate the talents of years gone by!
I can only fantasize about how things were when you were young. I wish I could zap myself back into time because people seemed to have more respect for each other. I'm much younger, but I will tell you that the Millennials don't like all the special effects, or musicians who aren't writing, and playing their own music. If you have noticed I think there are many who are looking to older films, and music because there was better stories, more imagination, and talent was a priority.
Unlike modern films, you can clearly hear everything that is said. They aren't coarse, there is no obscenity and people look stylish and well dressed. I love these 1930s films.
Agree with your great comment!
I looked at the website about you, your life, your business, Cook Islands, and the wonderful love story of you and your husband Dennis. And the photo of you was lovely!

All of these classic movies are so much more enjoyable to watch. I have been watching them since I was a kid. I'm 60 now.
Thank God for these beautiful old films. They are a treasure trove.
Same here, 60. Started watching old movies, often with my sister, in middle school/ high school. They came on in the middle of the night, or sometimes a morning matinee (on a sick day) :)
Me too. I'll be 60 next year!
60 also. We had the 2 o'clock movie on week days when I was in middle school and, it was a life saver for this latch key kid. I definitely like these over the stuff now!
This movie takes gaslighting to a whole new level!! Great writing and acting!!
Lmfao 😅😅😅
Right 😭😭
1. Always beware of a deal that seems too good 2. Always let SOMEBODY know where you've gone 3. Be suspicious of those who want you to be isolated and alone. If more people remembered these tips, maybe some lives would be saved.
But just think how many movies plots we'd lose, people in movies always make the same mistakes, they never tell anyone what's going on or where they are going and they seem to trust every idiot that crosses their path - think how many times these items drive movie plots !!
@@wmperkins25 Oh, you are absolutely right, King! But. . . I just can't help hitting the 'mother button', and flipping the 'you really should hear this' switch and hanging out the 'have I mentioned this?' neon sign. It's a character flaw which comes from having given birth (twice): people are just TOO HARD to carry around for nine months, scream excruciatingly through labor and delivery, raise through sleepless nights walking the floor. . .you get the picture, maybe, even though you're a guy?
Narniagirl how right you are...
@@narniagirl1574 we all need people like you around tho -i could use more 'motherly' types looking after me, thank you
Yes if course. But if heroines in these movies followed that advice thered be no plots. This is fiction for entertainment. Not reality.
Nina had talent and beauty and George was always fun to watch, always love to hear him talk with his incredible voice. Love the clothes and look of both men and women, they had style and class then .sadly that is gone for the most part.
The heroine's clothes are beautifully classic. We can wear them today and look very tasteful and attractive.
😊
This is a gem. I love old films like these. No foul language, no sex scenes, no woke agenda, no anti-Christianity attitude. What a refreshing glorious entertainment.
They are very well done and the settings are beautiful. I love them. I never watch the movies they make in hollywood these days. My sensibilities are offended by them.
So many lavishly produced films these days but they are unwatchable, just loud and uninteresting. In the 1930s it seems everyone put in the effort to make it good - actors, directors, screenwriters and composers were so talented. Now all that gets drowned out by special effects, explosions, swearing, sex scenes. They are mostly just tiresome.
I listen to channel Disparu to laugh at contemporary shows instead of watching them.
As for "woke agenda" - Black Americans need to be "woke" - when white America began to feel this, then all of a sudden everyone became "woke" and mucked it all up!
Some of us like a funny sex sceen, Over the centuries Christianity has done far more harm around the world that it has good! That’s why they’re closing, & woke is reality, just stuff-shirts don’t want to admit it…foul language I’ll go along with that one, except that’s how most sound off
From the way you talk. Sex was only invented in the late 1960's.
I love these sweet old movies! Thanks. There's nothing better than an old British mystery film!
Filmed in the US.
Back in the day, they truly knew how to put a great movie together and choose an incredible cast!
Of course I love many made movies today, but there's absolutely no possible way to compare the movies back then with the movies today.
I love an old movie on a rainy day or when a good nights sleep is impossible.
My favorite thing about movies from around the mid-1930s til the '50s were the opening credits. Always so classy looking, especially MGM's.
They were smart enough to make a good movie.
AGREED!
Ah! You mean back in the day, when you actually had to have a good story to tell to keep the audience interested. Today, they hide crap story lines by blowing lots of stuff up every few minutes, to satisfy all the audiences that all seem to have ADHD. The rest of new movies is quite forgettable.
What you have described is basically society's degeneration into liberalism. The farther we sink, the worse we become. ~ Simple.
Wonderful story and music...no special effects or gimmicks, just great acting and beatiful scenery. Top notch!!! Thanks for sharing❤
This is one of my all time favourite movies, fast paced, great cast and acting, full of suspense and has a great ending, highly recommended.
Really enjoyed this. Nothing like a black and white melodrama. Recommended.
2/10/2021: Sitting on a big chair near my bed and getting ready to watch. Have a BLESSED day. Take care.
What a compact, delightful little film; not a second wasted and no loose ends!
So much put into this drama in an hour. Impressed. Loved it although I was on the edge of my seat
These old time B&W movies are the best ... a mystery suspense storyline, that keeps you on the edge of your seat, from the very beginning, right to the very end, with an unexpected but surprisingly ending of an outcome. Loved the house with all the furnishings and what have you. Would be a dream come true, to have, own, and live in such a beautiful home such as this.
Should I watch the movie? :) I'm 32 years old so I don't know if it's the right thing to do and if I'm gonna like it :(
I am older than u but I have Always loved the old movies, esp the black n white homes. I assume its free for you...what have u got ti lose?😅
Great movie 🎦
Nina Foch became an acclaimed teacher of motion picture acting at the University of Southern California later in life.
Oh, that was lovely. No realistic violence, and somehow one knew it would turn out all right in the end. And it was well-acted, if a little hammed up when the son loses his temper in a frenzy and stabs a cushion! THANK YOU!
Yes but we don't mind. The whole film is a beautiful panorama and the story is like a wholesome suspense novel. No indecent scenes added and no foul language. Love it.
Thanks for some good old movies. So refreshing.
I agree, it is a wonderful storyline. I particularly love that house and the ambience.
What a story line, wonderful and Nina Foch was great. I'd only seen her later movies. Thank you!
That was good. All in 1hr too. Can’t beat the old plots.

Say what you will, people. The cast is first-rate, the story damn good & the filming (in B&W) perfect.
I thought the ending was rather too quick.
There's nothing better than a black and white film that shows why they call them classics able to stand the test of time. From the excellent plot dialogue/ screen plays, to glamorous actresses with their beautiful fashion and glamorous hair/makeup. The American film industry certainly made some good films, but so did the British film industry. I just love when two different film casts from different countries come together to made a classic film

Nice review. Try watching Lady Hamilton. It is a flawless example of perfect film... an all time favorite. There is no one like the great couple; Vivien Leigh and Lord Lawrence Olivier... a true life couple and in the film as well. It will take your breath away. -
A very interesting thriller. Nine Fochabers shines in the lead role. Macready also good. His mother effectively portrayed.

Very different countries all over the world to see how they survived, love black and white movies
I love Dame May Whitty's voice. No one speaks like that now. She was born in 1865, so was 79 or 80 here. I also love Hollywood's idea of England. I'm sure they chose Cornwall and a Manderla-style house because Rebecca was such a superlative and memorable film. It's also interesting how relatively passively women are portrayed compared to today. Terrific and fast moving, it's only 65 minutes long!
Tom Moncrieff When I first saw the back of the mansion overlooking the sea I kept thinking "..Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again.." Lol! Where's Mrs Danvers when you want her?!
Looked like it was shot in Beverly Hills and at a California beach
Thank you for downloading this film, I was able to sit through it with out fast forwarding and that's saying something. Once again thank you.
Every 🌃 I listen to this 🎥 when I'm going to sleep I turn it on UA-cam and turn the phone face down and listen to it
I have always known of this movie, but kept putting off watching it, until today. Sometimes films earlier than 1950 can be old- fashioned and boring, but not this one. It's totally engaging with an intriguing storyline. That luxurious estate, where she's being held, is absolutly gorgeous. Dame May Whitty is brilliant as always. The elegant Nina Foch is superb. Definitely check this one out!
JEFF KIPER Sometimes movies from 2013 can be stupid and childish try Transformers. (Good movies are not a matter of production period that is irrelevant.)
Sometimes films made after 1950 can be boring and old-fashioned and meant to be seen my juveniles of all ages.
This movie was a breath of fresh air! Great story and acting. A lot better than a lot of the mess they got on TV nowadays.
Is it really that hard to make a positive statement without saying something negative. There are many positive and uplifting shows on TV. If you are watching the mess, it is your choice! Change the channel!
@@Michelle-pn9xt Change the channel. Wall to wall adverts with nothing on. I was brought up when we had three channels, which had more quality stuff on.
@@youngsteph1 Many networks have tons of quality programs.
@@youngsteph1 Hallmark. Most the the shows are family shows. There is the UP network ... all family shows. There are Catholic and Christian networks. There are cartoon networks. There are channels that only show kids programs. There is Disney and Nickelodeon. There is public television. Everyone has this channel. Many good programs are on that channel everyday. There is Pure Flix on UA-cam. The programs are Christian and family oriented. BYUtv
@@Michelle-pn9xt Cartoon Networks. You must be kidding. When I started watching Sky 3 decades ago, there were around 6 channels for children, half of which had something on containing good programs & older cartoons. Now there is a round 40 channels, full of modern American garbage that that is of no use to anyone. There may well be some good programs on other channels, if you want to stop for an advert every every 5 minutes, which I don't. Just because Americans are conditioned to this nonsense, doesn't mean the rest of us are.
Something I think would've made the film the slightest bit stronger is Julia finding more in common with Marian. Not to the extent she believes she is her, I like that she keeps her cool throughout, but enough to feel connected to her and motivated to not only unbind herself but find justice for Marian. Of course by the end she accomplishes it anyway, but it being a driving force would've been nice.
Have a major soft spot for the film even still, I'll think about it from time to time and shiver. Imagine being in her shoes. Chilling.
That husband was a real gem of a psycho and the mother so conniving.
This is such a terrific film. Thank you for uploading it.

I understand why. People should be kind, and honest, this movie shows how low sick people will stoop. Disgusting really.
This one got to me. Kept saying, she is the star , they won't kill her off. Scary gem. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for the upload great good old story line. Sad that it was true one could be institutionalized back then for practically nothing. My husband's mother in 1930s was threatened with being placed in an asylum if she didn't come home right away from California after her parents found out she had quit going to church on Sundays while she was there studying art under Walt Disney at his school she ended up going home for fear of being put away she was never a happy woman after that but did live terrified of her parents even after she married.
How sad the past was how they could put someone away for such a flimsy reason😥
Long sentence!
Well, it was sad, but are our current mentally ill who we leave out on the streets being homeless with danger and trash to eat any better off.
Loved this black and white. The whole story was great.
thanks for posting
Lol. A locked drawer full of knives and he still always has one to whittle with and rip up sofa cushions.
He snuck, and took it when his mother was on the phone
What a gem! I can't believe I have never seen that before...really great! Thanks for uploading.
I've seen so many movies like these if I was ever in this situation I would play along until I'm trusted😂😢😮
Dame May Whitty did something like this in an episode on the radio show "Suspense." Her character wanted a companion and hires Maureen O'Sullivan. Maureen wakes up and the house is empty she tries the doors but they are locked, in the kitchen there are bars on the windows. The old lady turns up and said she locked the doors out of force of habit. It ends with Maureen being the bride to a hidden lunatic son living upstairs.
Thanks for posting this gem of a movie!
Wow!! Still watching but this picture should’ve been colorized. Filled with stunning sceneries. Outstanding filming team! 👌🏻

Great old film and in fantastic condition. Thanks much for sharing it.

Dame May Whitty was a great old actress she was the Judi Dench in her day .
I recommend this to anyone who likes a good thriller
Very good! Good script and acting! Very suspenseful!
Thank you! I love these old movies, right down to amazing recoveries from trauma. That young woman knew how to bounce back! Sheer entertainment with actual stories that required acting talent. I'm believing the kitty got a good home with the nurse.
Thank you for uploading this film if was great. I love black and white old films they seem much more atmospheric. This is the first time I have ever seen Dame May Whitty play a baddie!

This actress Nina Foch had a tiny role in an episode of The Closer. Blew my mind when I found out while watching this gem that it's her.

First film (for me) in the new year. Enjoyed it! "Thanks" for uploading...best of everything in '24!
Ending was the best part. McCready is always a great villain-the real scar makes him seem so horrid. Dame May, however, usually plays the great dame, umm which she was, of course.
Gilda Marlowe That's a "dueling scar", a look sported by the aristorcratic who went to the right European schools -- eventually becoming a sort of fashion statement administered by a barber rather than being earned in real swordplay. He is sinister, isn't he! You can see it well at 32:56. Ladies may observe at 33:36, in that same scene at the seaside, her perfect make-up of the era -- not an arched brow but a perfect semicircle, a nice cats-eye done with the eyeliner, the hairstyle arranged just so. Wonderful casting, wonderful scene, wonderful movie!
@@brigitteking969 Actually, 'Uncle' George got that scar from a car accident in his college days. He was born and raised in a wealthy Rhode Island family (not Europe despite his self created accent). He was my grandmother's brother hence the 'uncle' reference. The scar was displayed in varying degrees of prominence during his career in various movies. His best known being 'Gilda'.
@@daneotto That is neat to hear. Yep, he seemed to always play this kind of character and that scar just made him look perfect for those roles. What was he like in real life?
Some of the old woman's lines were funny. " We have to make it look like we tried to save her" very enjoyable.

I love this movie, watched it many times. But if Julia jumped from the window she would have gone straight down upon the rocks, not, all the way to the beach. What a treat Miss Dame Witty! Loved her as Miss Marple. Also Nina is a delight.

B&W films are the best, know trash shit at all , loving it.
This film is too weird for me. But Most of us are raised to “BE NICE” above all. Afraid to be assertive, afraid to say no, often we put being nice above common sense. Common sense dictates we DO NOT trust anyone we don’t know. I’ve made a lot of very costly wrong turns, due to NOT listening to a loud inner voice saying DON’T DO IT or DON’T trust someone.
Listen to your instincts.
The film is almost 80 years old for heaven's sakes. Too weird? LOL
Thank you for bringing back quality movies. I’ll be watching more!
