    Yeah it's pretty much the same story in Villach, where I am from. The root cause seems to be the "Zersiedelung" and hence the car dependency. It's just cheaper and quicker to buy the groceries in some Hofer or Billa etc. at the edge of town where there is plenty of parking space. The shift towards e-commerce during covid, greedy landlords and the inflation finished off many of those businesses.

      It looks a bit sad actually, not many trees or public gardens. A bit soulless imho.

    Small businesses have more revenue when there's no cars nearby, because more people stop there, there are numerous studies on it, so if anything, getting cars out of the center will help the city.

      I believe you! And I'm also for making city centers more walkable (I visited great examples such as Barcelona for instance) BUT the problem we face is that smaller businesses are struggling to afford rent and facilities in those places, therefore have to close or move where they can make more revenue. That makes life harder for the remaining shops since now there are even less incentives for people to shop in the center. Especially when there is a big, convenient shopping center nearby. That results in them also moving/closing. It's a hard to break "death spiral".

    It’s empty because no one is working in factories producing watch movements, etc. Although, they must be manufacturing skis, ski bindings, and ski boots somewhere in the city. Are they?

    • @whr_vlogs
      @whr_vlogs  9 місяців тому

      No, it's not because of lack of work or anything. The centers are empty because people choose to buy stuff from shopping centers outside of the city.

    so like, are people just moving out of the city ?

    • @whr_vlogs
      @whr_vlogs  9 місяців тому +2

      No, actually not. The population has increased in the past yers. The problem is that businesses are moving out of the city centre due to high rent and less people buying stuff there. That ends in dead city centers. They are trying to change that but shopping centers on the outskirts are just more convenient.

    I lived in Klagenfurt about 20 years ago and it was always a lot of people in Altstadt. It was also walkable only and there were a lot of caffes and restaurants. Also plenty of small shops as well. Don't know how it is now..

      @whr_vlogs  9 місяців тому +3

      It's better! I was there in summer for a quick holiday and I didn't see a lot of empty stuff. Klagenfurt also has a fair amount of tourists because of the lake.

      I was in Klagenfurt in July 2023 and I was very dissapointed by the services of hotels and restaurants.( very poor food and unfriendly staff ) On the lake Woerthersee everything is ok , but in the town Klangenfurt not at all.I had the feeling that it is a " dead town ", nobody on the streets after 19,00 .Even the publik transport was no more working .

    Empty city and empty old city core is a difficult question pls dont say empty city to 10.big town in autria its a big fail from you😂 at 10Grad nobody walking all drive with cars to the free parking all rooft fishapark shopping mall. Its not the true wath you say in this video. Your smaller guys life totay in the newer houses round the city core is grow a total new city part the last years with parkingspace and good energy saving houses. Look at google maps then everybody see the big growing town and google fishapark.

      You understood the term "empty" wrong. What I meant is not that there are no people (in fact there are 47000), it is the center which suffers from empty shops and businesses. All the people are (as you said yourself) outside the center = the city is sprawling. That's what the government tries (and fails) to reduce.
