FYI: k.u.k. actually isn't a name, but more of a description - "kaiserliche und königliche Hofbäckerei" means they used to deliver to the emperor's court in ye olden days. Mostly a good sign that you'll get a certain level of quality.

The official tourism commercial for Linz basically says, "We are oldschool, we are racist, we are unfriendly, but there's some cool stuff here and there, so if you wanna check us out, go for it. If not, who cares."
But honestly, it kinda works. The only thing tourists are usually a little bit shocked about is when they realise that pretty much every building in the inner city turns into a pub at night and that the streets that seemed so peaceful to them during the day are now filled with tons of singing drunk people.

Linz is the birthplace of Adolph Hitler -- this was his home town. My ex grew up in Linz 50 years ago. Her grandfather was a farmer who had been in WW2. His farm went down to the water, and after the war he sold it and a hotel was built there. WW2 history wasn't taught much in school in the 1970s, and adults did not discuss the war. One of her teachers did teach it, but that was rare and frowned upon. She asked her grandfather if he was afraid of anything. He said he was afraid of death, because he knew he was going to hell.

When it needed a battery the jeweler told me that the mechanism was a budget Seiko product which he has to pay £20 for. OK, so it's a fake, nothing works except for the time/date but it keeps excellent time. You should buy that watch

Oh by the way the "k. u. k" front of Austrian businesses means "Kaiserliche und Königliche" and has the meaning that they were approved to deliver to court of the Emperor - a special honor at that time. These times it is only meaning that that business has a long tradition of being in business - at least more that 100 years - and had the special honor that the Emperor bought regularly stuff from them.
