Do a video essay on Scotland on how they went from a consistent qualifier for major tournaments to not qualifying for a tournament for 23 years to now with a young squad of promising potential
As a Canadian, the final nail in the golden generation's coffin was definitely the game that made everyone say "wow, they were really lucky to win against Canada..."
Was nice to see some respect put on Canada’s name in that game even though we couldn’t get the result we deserved. Kompany should be Belgium coach in the future once he has enough experience at club level. That charisma, grit and leadership seemed to not have toned down a bit since he had great stints with Anderlecht and now promoting Burnley to the PL.

This is only the Nations League yes, but it was also an opportunity for revenge against the rival neighbours. As a belgian, I really think that our prime was between 2015-2019, it was the time when we were real contenders. I'm a huge fan of Hazard because this is the type of player who can really make the difference and everybody who really watched the matches can relate to that. Nothing will be the same now , even if I think our current squad can maybe do something in the future
I still stand by that to this day, had Meunier not been suspended for the semi final against France, that Belgium would've won the world cup in 2018. They scored goals in bunches in all other games, and the change in shape for them semi final really threw them off.
Vincent Kompany NEEDS to become their head coach. With what he’s accomplished in Burnley so far he has proven he has what it takes to creat a cohesive group that will push through all pains and disagreements.
Don't worry about things not being as on schedule as you hoped! We all get things wrong from time to time as humans, and variables out of your control can change things! This video essay is worth the wait regardless!
Even though we never actually won something, as a belgian I'm still very proud. World cup 2018 were some of my best memories ever and seeing our small country becoming third was incredible to watch. World cup 2022 was awful though...
I think when people look at Belgium national team, they only look at the 2014-2022 generation, but overall in their entire history for a small country in Europe what they have achieved is fantastic.
Well its 100% amazing for a country with 11mil people reaching 3rd place but Coatia had much less money, way worse infrustructure, almost no hype and a population 3 times smaller, a worse and less experienced coaching staff, no centralized system for youth production and way smaller pool of quality players to choose from and achieved way more. You almost won nations league. This year, Croatia (my country) has a shot at winning that. I hope we do but there are strong nations like Spain and Netherlands in there.
@@somethingwithultra7231 I wouldn't count the 2014 team as a Golden Generation. Maybe you could see it as a sort of Last Dance of the remaining players from the 06-10 generation, but the Big 4 were already in decline and Van der Vaart even missed the tournament. On top of that some crucial players around them, like Van Bommel, Van Bronckhorst, even the unfancied but solid enough Heitinga and Mathijsen, had retired and been replaced by lesser players. We also had to resort to playing Kuyt wingback because we had zero competent options in that position. As much as the success of that World Cup was overblown, with Mexico still being angry at the manner we got our victory over them and only getting past Costa Rica on penalties, it was still a good tournament for that mediocre side, and I'll never forget the way we caused Spain to collapse.

as a Belgian, I don't see this last "Golden Generation" as a failure. Yes, we didn't take any trophies, but throughout many years, I have truly enjoyed watching the belgian football at the EC's and the WC's. Details have determined we didn't win any trophies, play the game against France again 10 times and we win 8 of them. As a Belgian, great to go through memory lane again. Great video essay man! First time seeing a video of yours and I liked the mix of seriousness and memes. Keep up the good work and keep an eye out for some of our new talents such as Onana, Bakayoko and Openda ;).
Welcome to the channel man! Also definitely excited to see what the new crop can do in 2026
Great video Essay. As a Belgian you are spot on with the team dynamics problem
Appreciate it!
2018 Belgium squad was peak greatness. Best team at the Erik’s cup and very unlucky against France
Very nice cover and especially all the sources where you found things like Guardian Eurosport etc etc etc
As always a superb and in-depth view of the state of affairs in football. Maqwell please think of the Croatian story, a footballing nation that formed recently, war toren and the rise to the top.
Just started and already know it’s gonna be a banger!!!
I love these essays so much Max :)
Hands down the best football analysis channel on YT, TIFO alright, HITC sevens ok, Football Iconic good, Maqwell god tier
Thanks bro!
3rd place at a world cup is something to be proud of and should not be considered a failure, winning internarional trophies is a rare occurance for even the big nations so the fact that our small country achieved that makes it so that i cannot consider them a failed golden generation
The Lewis Dunk POV had me crying for real, great vid my guy
Haha appreciate it!
1:53 You got a like just for that reference (Thanks editor)
Also the nickname "World Champions of Friendlies" probably still applies to the Belgian team even today, but change friendlies for FIFA Ranking

I’d love to see the rise of Croatia as a national team
@@dante6055 what ?
But Belgium 🇧🇪 is better than Croatia 🇭🇷 😏
@@dante6055 Whats your prediction with Belgium? Will they win any titles in the foreseeable future?
@@dante6055 Hahaha im joking as well, I really hope we get a World Cup trophy one day :)
@@dante6055 as a dutchman I'm hopeful but sceptical we had 3 chances to win it
Brillisnt choice on using Kakyoins theme at 40:50
I bet $100 on Belgium to win the 2014 WC at 500-1 in 2012. I watched every qualifying game and told everyone I know that DeBruyne would be the greatest MF in the world. It’s been fun but also a nightmare
41:25 I still have nightmares of that counter attack
I just realized, the team that beat Japan in the round of 16 beats Brazil in the Quaters, twice in a row
There it is! Enjoy it everyone!
Do a video about egypt's downfall won 3 afcons in a row 2006-2010 and haven't won one since and lost 2 finals recently
Yo bro i like how you put so much work into those Essays, maybe you can make a Video about the downfall of the german national team
Potentially, but nonetheless thank you for the nice comment!
I was caught so off guard when you played “friends” from call of the night cause i have it set as my ringtone so I thought someone was calling me lmao
That’s hilarious lmao
this is such an excellent video. well done.
Appreciate it!
another video which ill always watch before ill go sleep, great work man
Much love man!
@@Maqwell is there any chance of a video about Romania being done? I ask because you responded some time ago that you'll add it to the list 😭
Another great video essay maxwell. Really looking forward to the next one on the Chinese super league. Keep up the good work mate 👏
Thanks Tom!
Love the intro 💯💯, taught me loads bout Belgium
Glad you enjoyed it!
You should do Netherlands and their failures in the World Cup next
As a dutchman I'm getting my tissues
Finally a Belgium legacy of failures
And it’s an hour long ☠️ that’s how bad they are 😂
@@bababababababa6124 surprised he could fit all their failures in one video
@@oskarchomicz1517 I was expecting it to be 5 hours
@@bababababababa6124 its just because he talks about the entire history and every tournament they were in lmao nothing to do with ‘how bad they are’
@@user-vr8fs8gg6h bro don’t cry I was joking. They are bad though 😂
You deserve more subscribers than T-series. You're the CR7 of video essayists. I love you. Literally, I have a parasocial relationship with you.
Been waiting for this one since the group stages ended.
whos here after they lost to Slovakia at the Euros
Love your video essays keep producing 🙏🏼❤️
Thanks!
As a Belgian, it pains me that my other nationality (Greek) won more
That’s not true bro
The boos haunt theme from Mario 64 when a team is bottling always kills me🤣
this is about to be the greatest hour of my week
thank you for making a lot of quality videos, you are very underrated youtuber B-))
Thank you so much!
As a belgian great video, I wouldn't underestimate the new belgian talents though.
Great video as always maxwell !!! Your Hardwork deserves more rewards 👏👏👏👏
Thank you so much man!
Why is Maqwell so so good at making these video essays? Good job
Haha thanks man!
Maybe a video on players/managers who failed upwards would make a great video.
56:32 Can't believe Romelu Lukaku would also miss the air and hit the glass :(
I remember that last match in the 2022 world cup. It's a strong contender for the worst individual performance I've ever seen live
as belgium/finnish person the some of the comments are kinda disrespectful on belgiums team its a amazing team to think how small our country is belgium didnt impress in the 2022 wc i cried after we went out put we have a new manager and we are improving pls put some respect on belgiums team as in the 2018 wc we beat many big countries and gave fight to france and we deserved better against france
Uruguay is mega tiny and has 2 World Cups, only excuses remain for the Belgian lie
@@MrRanaVenenosa uruguay is still bigger than belgium and they won it in 1930 and 1950 when the world cup was way smaller than it is now
Great work yet again Maxwell
Thank you!
There is a great documentary about the 1986 world cup from Sporza. We had a lot of problems in the dressing room and even the win against Irak was a horrendous game I mean they had a man less and we only just won it. People got sick too cuz of some Mexican virus. But then we finally got into some good form after putting a young squad on and taking some recommendations from the media. The linesman was horrible in the match with Argentina btw even though Argentina played better the linesman had no clue what offside was.
they pretty much had around 2 tournament's with their golden generation and failed and now they have a completely different team i honestly think they missed their one chance to get silverware
I would love to see a video like this for another big nation like Argentina, France, or Brazil 🤩
It's a great day when Maxwell uploads a video essay
Heyyyy our trophy cabinet isn't empty as you mentioned we won the Olympics which back then were like the world cup.
A maqwell chiringuito reference had to be the best thing I've ever heard
Thank you for this amazing exposition man. Us Belgians will stay hopeful for our next shot at glory ❤️🇧🇪
Wish you all the best of luck!
That Nujabe song at the background starting from 5:52. So many memories!
They've done it again 💀💀
