The Forlorn Abandoned Gothic Cottage House in the Mountains of Virginia built in 1860

- This small unique old gothic farm house was supposedly built around 1855-1860. I couldn’t find much information on it but it was most likely built for a moderately wealthy single family farm. Nothing about the house is very grandiose, it features a steep gothic pitched gable on the front of the house with a small porch jutting out below, leading into the front door. Another interesting feature of the house is it has a secondary staircase on the back of the house which leads to a small room which is disconnected from the main upstairs rooms of the house. Amazes me how straight the roof line is on all these really old houses, even when the roof is rotting in places!!! Those builders must know something current builders dont!!!!
And not a single creak in either!!!!
They had pride in their work back then. Now it's all about the $$$$ and in a hurry to build. Quality doesn't matter anymore.
They used old growth lumber for one thing, which is about twice as strong as modern farmed lumber. And takes centuries to grow.
Certainly don’t build them like they used to! Definitely don’t have the same materials anymore, just compare old timber to the stuff you find at Home Depot. Thank you for watching!! :)

A wide hallway for ventilation and 2 halves. Wild narrow staircase to top floor.. I love this house. Since it’s small, it looks more fixable

This is definitely a unique house. Nice large bedrooms, maybe for lots of kids! That second house with all the stone work, makes me think of something you’d see in Europe, of some of the old farmhouses there. The workmanship is amazing, as these are still standing! Thanks Kappy!

I really like the upstairs bedrooms. At first, I thought the whole thing was going to look solid, but some of it was rotted away. Still, it was a pretty cool house.

Just when you think you've seen every kind of floorplan, Kappy comes across yet another addition/ell like none we've seen before. These structures truly were personalized, unlike the cookie cutter/industrialized/mass produced structures of today's world. Imagine, houses that were transformed into just what the family needed, at the time. What a concept: freedom to configure according to need and capability. They sure thought different back then. Not fancy, but well-built and just the right size for a small family. No obvious kitchen or bathroom that I could see. Second one strictly functional, but probably made to last more than a lot of homes today.

I am still 4 years behind with your videos. One day I will catch up to the present. An abandoned old house by me, copper thieves stole the oil tank pipe. $200,000.00 later, the spill was cleaned up.

The simplicity of the first house appeals to me, gothic is probably my favorite style. There must have been, at one time, a freestanding kitchen building. What a unique find, Kappy, and a treat for the middle of the week!

One tiiiiny ask. When going up into a room I’d like to see the whole room, including what’s behind you. So, a wraparound view.
Nice finds! If the walls could talk in either of these houses. The 1st one had interesting features for sure. I think you probably have it right about the 2nd house being a share cropers place. Wasn't a lot left inside either place. Looked like a "dry stack" foundation on the second place. A lot of times, if you look on the back side of the rocks, there would be just enough morter to hold them in place. Don't quote me though cause I could be wrong.

Well, Kappy, you saved my Wednesday! The cable went out Tuesday night and I was getting really bored, then along came a bonus video from my old friend! Thanks for the nice surprise!
The first house can be described in just one word...fascinating!
I think the strangely spartan separate room was meant to completely isolate someone, a servant, perhaps, or quite possibly a relative who needed to be sequestered. People often had older kinfolks back then who were suffering from dementia, though that word was not used for the malady. Maybe that room was used to keep Grandpa from wandering off at night. I used deadbolts, but maybe they just barred the door. It is odd that the room has none of the amenities of the main part of the house, making it a cold or hot room, by seasons, and probably pretty miserable to live in under any circumstances. Whoever spent time up there, no one was very interested in their comfort, that's for sure!
It is a tragedy that the roof has suffered such catastrophic damage, apparently from a windstorm or maybe even a the removal of the tin roof to put out a fire. It wouldnt be the first time we saw the residue of a fire in a sickroom!
The kitchen below is not going to survive much longer, with all that water standing on the floor. Already, there are signs of black mold under the stairs and on the kitchen walls.
The house was once quite charming and well constructed, too! It makes me think of an old poem called "The House with Nobody In It." The handsome stairs and the little architectural details here and there, such as the very careful paint of the first floor, speak to the quiet pride of the former and more recent owners. They loved and cared for this uniquely beautiful house!
It is a strangely somber little house, though, almost as if something happened to change the happiness that once filled it into great sorrow and even anger. There is an oddly unsettled feeling there.
I think you're right about the second dwelling, my friend. The lower level was nothing more than a barn, while the upper level was none other than a crude attempt at turning a hayloft into a domicile, most likely for a farmhand or even an enslaved family. Clearly, there were none of the simple improvements which would have led to the place being made so much more comfortable!
Altogther, these two buildings seem to be a faded snapshot of the small holdings of a middle class landowner of the time period immediately preceding the War Between the States.
Great find, Kappy! Lots of historical mysteries to consider!

We'll have 'dogwood winter' for the next few days, meaning that this gardener has a whole lot of young plants sitting around the house, waiting for the cold snap to end.

I go by a poor old farmhouse with its shingles broken, and black.
I suppose I've passed it a hundred times, but I always stop for a minute
And look at the house, the tragic house, the house with nobody in it.
I never have seen a haunted house, but I hear there are such things;
That they hold the talk of spirits, their mirth, and sorrowings.
I know this house isn't haunted, and I wish it were, I do;
For it wouldn't be so lonely if it had a ghost, or two.
This house on the road to Suffern needs a dozen panes of glass,
And somebody ought to weed the walk, and take a scythe to the grass.
It needs new paint, and shingles, and the vines should be trimmed and tied;
But what it needs the most of all is some people living inside.
If I had a lot of money, and all my debts were paid
I'd put a gang of men to work with brush, and saw, and spade.
I'd buy that place, and fix it up the way it used to be,
And I'd find some people who wanted a home, and give it to them free.
Now, a new house standing empty, with staring window, and door,
Looks idle, perhaps, and foolish, like a hat on its block in the store.
But there's nothing mournful about it; it cannot be sad, and lone
For the lack of something within it that it has never known.
But a house that has done what a house should do,
a house that has sheltered life,
That has put its loving wooden arms around a man, and his wife,
A house that has echoed a baby's laugh, and held up his stumbling feet,
Is the saddest sight, when it's left alone, that ever your eyes could meet.
So whenever I go to Suffern along the Erie track
I never go by the empty house without stopping, and looking back,
Yet it hurts me to look at the crumbling roof, and the shutters fallen apart,
For I can't help thinking the poor old house is a house with a broken heart."
Alfred Joyce Kilmer (1886 - 1918) is best known for his poem, "Trees," but he actually produced quite a large volume of work.
Had his life not ended so tragically early, many believe he would have developed into one of America's great poets.
Joyce married young, and fathered five children, even as he was establishing himself as a teacher, writer, and lecturer.
While coping with the illness of one of their children, Joyce and his wife converted from the Episcopal faith to Catholocism, and he ultimately became the leading Catholic poet of his time.
When World War I broke out, Joyce enlisted, and had contracted to write a book about his war experiences.
Unfortunately, he was killed on a French battlefield before he ever even began the book; he was only 31 when he died.
Interesting side note: Joyce's father worked for Johnson & Johnson and is credited with inventing that company's famous baby powder.

I just love the 2 window triangle top houses like this..this is a really nice cottage type I love this look too you have good taste in houses well made to I really feel sad when something like this is rotting away and probably never git fixed up and appreciated again i just love love thoes type of triangle shaped walls..
