Elvis didn’t write any of the songs he sang. Mac Davis wrote this one and he is also an artist.

Everyone is reacting to this version. There is a lot better one, more moving, more heart grasping...the video is not of him, but of the Ghetto...IMO you would like it more. This one is more Vegas style...too upbeat

He was born into extreme poverty and lived in it most of his young life. He had many black friends his entire life and helped many, many people never forgetting where he came from. If I Can Dream is another deep beautiful song.

Almost 50 years old and the song is still pertinent to today's world.
This song hits hard for me. My family fled to the US from the South East Asian country of Laos. The civil war and genocide pushed my family to flee. They arrive in the US and shortly after I'm born in the ghetto. It doesn't get better from here. Not for a while at least.

The gift of Elvis is how he reaches ones soul with his passion as he gets into the song. He said he’d never sing or pick a song he didn’t feel or relate to. He was born into abject poverty. He lost a twin when he was born & had a rough childhood. When he sings Gospel, I can be cooking etc & all of a sudden tears are running down my face because his voice is such a God given talent. Elvis’ gospel songs are unlike any other, and the only work he won a Grammy for, ironically. Peace in the Valley, How Great Though Art, Where could I go but to the Lord, and more. I’m not a super religious guy, but the songs are beautiful.
When Elvis was drafted into the army the government was going to dismiss it and he did not have to join because of his Fame. But he said, no sir, I am going to serve my country like everyone else. So he went into the army for 2 years.
Elvis had many #1 hits in the 50s before he went into the military. Served his 3 years came back to his music career and started movies in the 60s.
From the 70's, very turbulent times. The war, race relations, equality, etc. was being discussed, fought over, faced, etc. As a big star, it was epic that he chose to sing this socially relevant song, he was told he probably shouldn't. That was the times. He knew his stardom would let him do it and it could be a hit. Original song title was "the vicious cycle" written by another singer, Mac Davis. He was already a superstar before being drafted in the army. He served his time in the Army and returned doing films and continuing his fantastic musical career. Elvis Presley is simply the G O A T.

This is a powerful song and done at a very tense time. A lot of performers passed on it like sammy davis Jr and other because of the very serious subject matter. Elvis was born very poor and could relate to being hungry. His dad tried to pass a bad check just to get money for food got caught and did alittle time leaving his wife and small son alone. He could relate to the song as well as having compassion for all people. A very charitable man. Im glad he had the courage and dedication to do this heart felt song.
Loved your reaction and being a fellow DFW citizen I thank you. So, to clarify, Elvis did grow up in extreme poverty but gained a love for music in churches and gospel was always a favorite of his. He hit it regionally at age 19 with the song "that's all right," and then was signed to RCA and had the breakout hit "heartbreak hotel". At the height of his popularity after 3-4 years of hit records and making 4 movies he was drafted into the Army at age 22. Instead of joining the entertainment corps to sing to troops he went in as a regular soldier and did a pretty tough tour of duty in the freezing cold of the German DMZ across from the USSR. He left the army after his 2 year duty and jumped back in with making songs and doing movies, though his manager kind of set him up on making teeny bopper money making movies instead of the artistic movies he wanted to do. He had a great comeback to live performing and this performance was within a year after his return to live performing after doing over 30 movies until his comeback. Good to see the younger generation discovering Elvis and his legendary catalog of great songs. Elvis represents the ultimate rags to riches story. He came from the poorest of the poor to become the biggest entertainer in the history of show business. He remains the biggest selling recording artist of all time. This is from a 1970 performance. I like your reaction and you are right on what you said about Elvis. You should do a reaction video on Elvis 'Change Of Habit ' a great song from 1969. Also ' We Can Make The Morning ' from 1972. Two great studio songs. Also ' Patch It Up ' a live performance from 1970.
Elvis had swag like no other. He's an icon...there will never be another Elvis.
He was actually a star before he got drafted. But if you read up on his, despite his flaws, he was a very thoughtful, and generous man.
Elvis in my book is the greatest. Made tons of movies that were number 1, drafted by the army in the height of his career and recorded the greatest music ever. Loved his music when he and pricilla divorced. Still Graceland is visited by millions every year and he’s been gone since 77. What other human being can say that
Elvis was already a huge star when he was drafted into the army. Elvis made it big in 1956 with his recording of "Heartbreak Hotel", which became his first gold record. He had already done 4 movies by the time he was drafted. His 4th movie, titled King Creole was being made at the time he was drafted in 1958, and as such, he had to get an extension from the Army as to when he was to report for basic training so he could finish the movie. He got discharged from the Army with the rank of Sergent and went back to his recording and acting. He had music released while he was in the service too though. He never recorded or even performed while in the service, but he recorded a hole bunch of songs in 1958 before goung into the Army, and they were released in 1959, while he was serving. He did that so his music could be released even though he was out of the public's eye for 2 years, 1958-1960.

Written by Mac Davis; recorded by Elvis in 1969 during a great deal of turmoil. It was an international hit. He reached people across the globe with this story and it is so sad that they cycle has still not been broken. He is literally telling society that they are responsible for obliterating poverty and a poor public education system. This song was part of his set in Vegas; thousands of people heard the song, but did they listen with their hearts? I don't think so.
The record company and his manager "Colonel" Tom Parker didn't want him to record this fantastic song.
But.. Mr. Presley wanted to!!!
I was raised in segregated south. I remember this song coming out, an instant hit, but he got much flack for it. This was a very big deal in 1969. So much respect for this mega talent.
His people advised him not to do it ... said it was too controversial ... Elvis said he loved the Truth of the song and did it anyway.

He was famous in music long before he went into the military, then a time after he came home he did the 68 come back special, then played Vegas for like ten years or thereabouts -- hes a true music legend and hes in all the music halls of fame and was well known for his gospel music which he loved to sing and won awards for.

Being raised in extreme poverty, 2 room shack with no running water, he never forgot where he came from or those that were still there. He loved God and people. His generosity was unsurpassed. Many greats in the business, like play great James Brown, Jackie Wilson, when Jackie passed away the only photo he had by his bedside was a picture of him and Elvis together. Muhammad Ali spoke at his funeral and talked about his great humility and generosity. Interesting stuff man. Thanks for the cool reaction.

You can best believe this song has nothing to do with his experiences.. White vs black poverty do not compare.. Even broke white people still have privileges more valuable than money.. This song like 90% of Elvis's songs was written by a black man.. The song is good but don't confuse the reality that he's not the genius that wrote it he's the genius that capitalized off it..
Elvis never had a pair of shoes until he was 8 years old. No free telephone for him. You don't know much about the history poverty in the US or other countries.
Brother it was amazing in the 70's when he sung this song for the first time. This video was shot in Vegas during one of his shows. A couple of things for you. Elvis was a Singer and Superstar before he went into the Army. Unlike some celebrities' , Elvis manned up and served when he was drafted. He served his one tour of duty, in Germany, and when he came home, he returned to music, but then wanted to act. It was sad that someone like Elvis had a Manager that controlled every aspect of his career. So Elvis ended up making some stinker movies. He did get to act with some of the prettiest and best of the actress's of the day. He and Ann-Margaret hit it off, and the sparks showed in Viva La Vegas! And he discovered the islands and made two great movies in Hawaii. I am so glad these newer generations have re-discovered his talents, and are re-viewing his work here on UA-cam. He rose to fame after recording a song for his mom when he was like 19 (like 1954). That record got him some notoriety on local radio stations, and the rest was history.
He was drafted to the military in 1958 for a mandatory 3-year term and was discharged in 1960.
At the time he got drafted, he was already a famous singer! He'd already had big hits on the radio.
That's what made his draft all the more spectacular. He was a new rock star going into the military.
While in the Army, he did record a few songs while on furlow so that his audience could continue hearing new material on the radio. Upon his exit from the military in 1960, his manager (Tom Parker) had arranged for Elvis to do a series of movies in Hollywood. This kept him busy for about 8 years, as he became a big-screen sensation and co-starred with some of the big hollywood female sex symbols of the day.
When his movie contracts were fulfilled, he returned to live performances in 1968, with a recorded for TV special called "Elvis 68 Comeback Special". It's worth your watching.
In that year, Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated, and Elvis was heartbroken. He cried over the racism that he had spent so much time fighting as a star. He defended his singers (black trio called The Sweet Sensations). As a matter of fact, one of those ladies is Whitney Houston's mother.
During the 1968 special, Elvis chose to record a song called If I Can Dream...probably the greatest recorded song he's ever done. He sang it as a tribute to MLK Jr and his dream for equality. Producers and his manager urged him not to do that song, but Elvis was all about social justice and did it anyway. You NEED to do a reaction on If I Can Dream.

So glad to see you can appreciate Elvis along side Queen. Totally different but both can touch your heart. I met him Jan.1973 on his way to Hawaii to film a special. He flew over on United Airlines & I was a passenger agent at LAX. He took the time to shake hands & say hello to all of us that could get to his gate. So gracious & kind. Obviously I've never forgotten this encounter!.

This is certainly one of the shortest songs Elvis ever recorded, and it was written by Mac Davis who was a singer and songwriter in his own right, but it takes you on this journey with the lyrics and the imagery and the music and that is the hallmark of a great singer, and also the hallmark of a great songwriter as well. Love this song!
Elvis was amazing. He was born in Tupelo Mississippi and was very very p. oor. He grew up in poverty. He always loved going to the black churches because he loved their soulful up tempo music and a lot of his style and influences came from that perspective. He was a twin at birth and his brother Jesse Garon was still born so Elvis was an only child and very devoted and attached to his mother. So i think he was definitely influenced by his childhood circumstances and he was very giving of his fortune to those in need. Elvis is a wonderful complicated and unique character and i know you will enjoy diving into his history. His music will stand the test of time always. One of my favorite performances he did was If I Can Dream. It was the 1968 comeback special 50th anniversary. Another one is American Trilogy live from Hawaii 1973 and suspicious minds live from Las Vegas. The whole 68 comeback special is great. Elvis had sort of started to be left behind a bit by the Beatles movement and just the newer music coming out so he did a televised special in 1968, just to remind everyone that he was still king i think. I love this song . Elvis had so much soul and growing up much like myself in a family that struggled to get by he obviously never thought that he was better than anyone of any race and feeling a kinship with those of any color who has been treated wrong.
Elvis was a poor kid from Mississippi with incredible talent and became an immediate superstar singing, before he was drafted into the army, which everyone was afraid would ruin his career. He served briefly and went right back to performing. His manager signed a major movie deal, which Elvis hated, but he completed the films, and reignited his singing career once again. A brilliant but ultimately tragic story.

Also don’t forget the fact that his shows became to wild people would get to out of hand so he had no choice but to quit going on stage. That’s the most sad thing is him having to quit because people were getting hurt so it was a wirlpool of things to happen but that movie deal was the breaking point on it also.

I'll be 1,000% honest. "In The Ghetto" makes me appreciate what young Black Boys and Girls go through more than ANY CURRENT hip-hop song out there!!! I feel empathy and the struggle when I hear these lyrics! This song is as relevant today as it was 50-years ago!

To answer your question, yes Elvis grew up in extreme poverty, living in a two room house with his parents in Tupelo, MS. His momma bought him his first guitar, which he chose over getting a bicycle. His music career had already begun, and he had already bought Graceland, before he joined the military. So his first love was music. He was in movies because of his popularity in music. He was not really into the movies because he didn't care for Hollywood, which is the reason he stopped making movies. If you get a chance someday, visit Graceland in Memphis, TN and his boyhood home in Tupelo, MS. There are some very knowledgable tour guides that can provide a great deal more detail on his life than I can. These places are well worth the trip. My husband and I took my mom down to Graceland and Tupelo because she has been a lifelong fan of Elvis. This was a few years ago and she still thanks us, even though we took her there as a thanks for the help and support she had given us for so long. Well worth the trip.

These feelings led Elvis to give one of the most passionate performances of his career. America was in the midst of an upheaval in 1968. The Civil Rights movement was in full swing and our world and culture were changing. Within a short span of time, two leaders were assassinated. The original title was " The Vicious Circle" which later changed to " In The Ghetto". Stop posting nonsense. Thanks, pal, you can do it as many have.

When Mac Davis was writing the song he called it the Vicious Circle, but could not find words to rhyme with Circle so he changed it to In the Ghetto (The Vicious Circle) and published it that way. Elvis cut is first record in July of 1953, he was already famous when he was drafted in March of 1958. He served 4 years in the Army as a Tanker.

He started in music, got drafted into the army, came out of the army and continued to pursue his music and his management wanted to incorporate his songs into movies. He had many fairly successful movies in the 60's.

He never had to go to the military. They wanted him to travel around the country and represent the army. But he wanted to do the same service as everybody else and ended up with 2 years in Germany just as he had broke through as an artist. To say no to much easier sevice says a lot about the mans character.

To go along with research of Elvis and in particular this song, and wondering about the inspiration for it... It was written by Mac Davis who wrote it being inspired by his best buddy he grew up with. Their fathers worked together but he said being so little he didn't understand why his buddy had to live where his buddy lived but he got to live where he lived. That stuck with him and he tried to write the song for years with a different title, "The Vicious Circle", it wasn't till a buddy played him the guitar lick when he was in his 20's, the one you hear in the song, that he heard the line in his head "in the ghetto" he went home with his guitar and the lick in his head and he said the song wrote itself. I have heard from other people in comments so I don't know if this is true, maybe you can research it to find out if it is. But like the interviewer in that video said, Elvis was looking for something socially relevant, and immediately loved it when he heard it. But even his manager and studio ppl tried to talk him out of it, but him being the King got it recorded anyways, apparently just STATING I'm recording it then just left the room. So this is Mac's story for his best buddy he grew up with, but it spoke to Elvis, and Elvis knew it needed to be heard.... and it STILL does.

A little background, Elvis had started his singing career and was in full swing by 56, he was so hot and so threatening and considered a major cause of juvenile delinquency because of his wiggling on stage ha ha, and responsible for the demoralization of the youth at the time that they drafted him in 1958 at the top of his career! He already had some movies under his belt and actually requested an extention to finish the movies "King Creole". Can you see that happening to one of todays superstars?? Elvis did his 2 yrs as an average joe, no special services and left a Sargent in
spring of 1960, if they expected the fans to have forgotten Elvis they gravely miscalculated and he was more popular than ever. Elvis then spent most of the sixties fulfilling his movie contract cranking out 31 movies by time he was done, he then began performing and recording again and the rest is history.

When ELVIS first got out of the army, Frank Sinatra had him on his weekly show. It was wonderful! He sang FAME AND FORTUNE, STUCK ON YOU, and another one. The quality was great. Frank Sinatra loved him. Also, if you did not know this, he grew up in extreme poverty in Tupelo, Mississippi.
Elvis starting singing in 54 at sun studios . He then was signed by RCA in late 55. From 56 58 he had number 1s became huge made 4 movies then got drafted into the army for 2 years then when he got out he started his singing again

Elvis started singing at a young age. He sang in gospel churches and his church of choice was Black Churches that he felt the most comfortable in. His family was dirt poor and as the years flew by and he started making money he would give away more than he kept.He was THE KING in all his ways.

Elvis was already a famous singer before he went into the army. I remember it. He got into films later, early ones were good but later ones weren't worthy of him but his manager was a bad influence and made bad decisions. It's a long story.
This wasn't just a song he sang...This was a message he was putting out especially back then.....He was a man that experience this life and was able to get out of poverty with his family...Not many ppl know that till this day Elvis's Enterprise still donates to communities that he took care of when he was alive...Still paying rent up until a year n paying for their child care so they can have a chance to get ahead in life... That's why i become angry when ppl speak badly about him...Ppl that speak this way. Never knew what this man was about...

Elvis didn't get out of the Army then go into movies, then on to music. Elvis became a world known singer in the mid to late 50's, then in 58 he got drafted into the Army, after having made 2 movies (then finished a 3rd before leaving for the Army). He could have had any singing job in the Army that he wanted, and was offered many. But he refused, he insisted on just being a soldier, and being treated like every other soldier. After getting out of the Army in 1960, he resumed his movie career and his music career, at least in the movies and in the studio. It wasn't until 1968 when he did his comeback Christmas special, then 1969 when he began his live concerts again, and he ended his movie career in 1969.
Mad respect to him for not taking one of those singing assignments when he was in the Army. As a former solder myself, I'm proud to have served in some of the same locations that Elvis did (Fort Hood, in Texas to be specific).

Elvis was into music and was a star before he went into the military. He was conscripted. His music was very rock and roll before he entered the army but it seemed less so afterwards. My favourite music of his is his early stuff - pre military. His acting was more of a showcase for his songs.

I don't know how in depth on Elvis you have gotten as i just started watching your videos. Elvis was no stranger to extreme poverty OR growing up "In The Ghetto". Elvis was born and raised in such places. His parents struggled....one year, 1939, his gather Vernon even went to prison for a few years for forging the signature on a paycheck because he was desperate. In Elvis' eenage years after they moved from Tupelo Mississippi to Memphis, Tennessee, they lived in government Project housing all the way until 1955/'56 when Elvis made it big and bought his firsr house. It was just a regular house, but it got him and his family out of the slums. In 1957, Elbis moved from that house to his icinic mansion, Graceland, where he would live for 20 years, which was the remainder of his life. He even passed away there in 1977.
Elvis was no stranger to extreme poverty and he never forgot what it was like. That's why he was so generous with his money. Secretly buying people things....homes, cars, horses, paying medical bills. Anything he thought someone not of his stature might want or need.
He never took his fame for granted, ever...not even towards the end of his life. He knew that anything could happen at any time and it could all be gone.

He was sent to Germany where he slept outside with the other guys in the snow. He never complained even though he was afraid the people would forget him and his music. He need not have worried, they loved him as much as ever when he returned to the U.S. I believe this is when he had the television special called The Elvis Presley 68 Come Back Special. This was when he wore the black leather pants and shirt... that everyone went crazy over.
