My underarms thank you, Suzanne. I have used this method on several sweaters now and it works like a charm. Your video and your commentary are very helpful. I still can't do it without referring to the video, but I guess that will come with practice. Underms used to be the "ugly" part of my knitting projects but now I'm proud to show them.
I'm about to give it a try,,thanks to Suzanne pointing me in the direction of this tutorial.......I'm excited for a sweater with no pit holes,,especially since I'm using expensive yarn with this one•!! 🙂🌻🧶🥢
I love how you demonstrated not only the how to do it, but also the why and how it works. Also, pre-pointing out how to better read the stitches was super helpful for applying it to my own work.
Amazing. I have been knitting for over 60 years and have learned more in two weeks from following your videos than I ever knew. This one my favorite. Thank you so much.
I completely agree with so many of the comments! I've used this several times and it works great every time. I especially appreciate the quality of your videos: THANK YOU for using great lighting, filming close-up and IN FOCUS (!), and with a light colored yarn that makes it easy to see what you're doing. My most referenced knitting video!
THANK YOU Suzanne. I’ve knitted 4 flax sweaters and I get so upset when I finish and there are holes to seam up at the end. I’ve looked all over the internet and yours is the best video suggesting how to correct this problem. I’m excited to try your technique on my next sweater.
I follow many knitting podcasters and they all have their strengths but you are simply the best teacher. Thank you for the wealth of knowledge that you share with us.
Next step in my sweater project: rip out the sleeve I've been knitting and redo it with this method. The last method I tried looks AWFUL. I kept trying to ignore it but I simply couldn't. Thank you for the clear video with such a fabulous technique!!!
Suzanne, I must say, your videos are very easy to follow and they take the ‘fear’ out of knitting! I mean, I feel like i want to knit more complex projects and all I have to do is come to your videos to check them out and I will find the answer lol. Thank you again!
What a lovely thing to say, Slatrice, thank you! I love hearing that you are becoming brave and adventurous, I have every confidence that you'll succeed! ❤️
Thank you for sharing! I think that's awesome how you casually have a knit friend lend you a WIP for a video. I love the sense of community in the yarn crafts crowd.
I was telling a friend how I fix those underarm bars/holes. I pick up extra stitches and get rid of them on next round. My friend told me about your method, and now I'm very excited to try this.
The results of your method are beautiful! No funny looking stitches!!! And no hole!!! Thank you for sharing this technique with us. I will have to watch your video a few more times, to get the technique down, but I will learn it because I love how yours looked after doing it. Thank you again.
I am a 15+ years crocheter, and a relatively new knitter. (I needed a new challenge, and boy did I get it!) For everything knit related that is terribly confusing for me, I'll type it in the UA-cam search bar and try and locate videos uploaded by you that are related to what I am having problems with, and EVERY TIME I watch one of your video's, everything just clicks! I love how you point every stitch out and explain why and how you do certain stitches and I LOVE it! I need that in-depth breakdown to understand what I'm looking at and how to conquer such things like this video with holes in the underarm joins, and much more! THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!!!
I have made two sweaters using this technique. Each time, each sleeve, I think I do it better. I can’t stop knitting sweaters, because I don’t want to forget. I really appreciate all your help. I have watched all your videos. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this wonderful method of hole prevention. I appreciate your clear instructions and your patient, unhurried approach. Your method yields a neat and tension perfect segue from that underarm bifurcation to the sleeve! I don’t knit sweaters much but I sure keep your link faithfully recorded in my knitting journal so I can access it as needed. Bless you, Suzanne!
Just found your channel as I am knitting another preemie cardigan for my first grandchild! Those underarm holes were the bane of my knitting but they won't be anymore! Your explanation and demonstration were extremely helpful! Thank you! Off to check out your FB page!
Thank you so much! I finally started my first sweater after platonically knitting for 15 years and your videos are incredibly informative and helpful. My sweater armhole still has a very slight gap in it, but I think that’s due to the YO eyelets and my general inexperience. Will try to identify how to completely eliminate it on the other arm, and will just use the tail to close the gap on my first sleeve since it’s right next to the picked up stitches. ❤️
You are very welcome, Sara! And I love your perseverance, practice really is the key and I think you have a great plan of action. If you haven't already, please consider joining my Facebook group (same name), it is filled with supportive knitters at every level and we all really enjoy helping each other. ❤️
Thank you so much for your clear explanations, the way you show what is happening in the fabric, and how you get into the nitty-gritty of why you recommend your techniques. In all my projects, the help from your tutorials has elevated my knitting far beyond what they otherwise would be! I feel like being able to finish these projects well, especially in these areas that show "rookie mistakes" such as armholes and edges, makes knitting so much more enjoyable because I feel confident that I will love the end result. I owe much of my success to you. Thank you for being such a wonderful teacher!
I come back to your video time and time again, each time I knit a jersey or cardigan. I wish I could remember the technique off by heart! Thanks so much, it's the best!
Thx for all of your videos they are so helpful! I love that you not only show us how to do it but you are teaching us why we do it. I call videos like this “The anatomy of knitting”. I’m working on my 2nd sweater, the Love Note, and I keep rewatching this video to help me as I go along. This video helped me on my first sweater but it really helped me this time since I better understand the construction of the stitches. I started knitting this past March and I love it!!! Thx for all you do!!
Love this! I’ll be using this with every shirt or sweater I make from here out! This technique should be in every single sweater knitters toolkit, in every book, pattern and class for sweater knitting (with link or credits to you)! You’re a genius! Thank you so much!
Wonderful! Thanks for watching and commenting. I hope you have become a subscriber to my channel and that you will share my videos with your social media friends. That is the biggest compliment you can pay me! Thanks and Happy Knitting, Suzanne.
Suzanne, i know this video is 3 and a half years old....but the universe was telling me something when it popped up in my youtube suggested videos.....perfect little tid bit since i'm working on the itag set in sleeve kal with you for my mother's sweater....it couldn't have been more perfect timing to see this video when we are getting close to start swatching and calculating the amount of yarn...now the underarm hole closure will be running through my mind for when actually start knitting a few weeks
As a new knitter I really love watching you. I am learning so much about problem solving and understanding what's going on in the process of knitting. You're a great teacher!
I have been struggling with this for years. Thank you for sharing your method , I've always had to go back and darn underneath the arms to clean up those holes.
Thank you for teaching me how to correct the holes in the underarms. I come back to this video over and over again. It is simple and does the trick. I appreciate you so much.
I love this method of obliterating the armpit holes, I applied it to thumb gussets too. Thank you again Suzanne. I am just getting ready to submit my level one MHK program notebook. Wish me luck.
This is fantastic! I’m knitting my first top down sweater, in fact I posted a photo on your FB group yesterday. I’m saving this video for when I get to the underarms. Your teaching style is wonderful. Thank you so much.
This video has been immensely helpful to me, not just when knitting a couple of baby sweaters, but also when knitting fingers of gloves. Thank you for sharing these knitting techniques!
I'm so happy to have come across your video. I was very frustrated with the raglan sleeve pattern I'm following as I could not figure out how to not have holes. Suzanne, this video saved me. Thank you so much❤
Thanks so much - this was a huge help!! The only thing that was a little confusing is that the video cuts off when showing the two bars being put on the needle on the left side, so the first time I did this I only had the bar that is worked immediately. I tinked back when I got to the bar that I didn't pick up, though I think I'm realizing I could have just picked it up right then and there. The next time I did it the right side was incomplete and I still had a huge hole. So I just put the bar on the needle and did the sk. I had no idea if it would work, but it did!! Thank you so much for this video. I've always dreaded and avoided sleeves for this very reason, nothing I tried ever worked - and now I have a method that works!! I'm sure I'll be referencing your video every time.
I am so glad you were able to improve your armhole. Thanks for commenting. I hope you have chosen to subscribe and please share my videos in your social media groups, like FB, Ravelry, Pinterest, etc. Thanks again and happy knitting, Suzanne.
@@ruthdoyle3572 if you see it again you will probably understand when, after the break at approx 4:20, Suzanne again points out which stitches are which. THEN , as I gather, there is a unknitted loop which is dealt with as an SSK at the the end of the round (Approx 8:20) ....and all possible holes concealed.
@@lkogirl9869 I have been watching and re-watching and I have to agree with you that the bar to the left of the final picked up backwards loop cast on does remain un-knit on the right hand needle until the round is worked around and then the un-knit 2 bars to the left of the sleeve side are worked as "SK" then as "K2tog" with the first stitch re-mounted. Then it looks like that bar leftward of the last backwards loop cast on pickup, once it is reached, is worked as "SK". So far, so good. But my problem is what do I do when I only have a single backwards loop cast on stitch with only 1 stitch to pick up? Looks like I may need at least 2 backwards loop cast on stitches to have sufficient stitches to work Suzanne's method. Thoughts and ideas? @Knitting with Suzanne Bryan, will page you for input!
I've tried many methods to close up those gaps but have never been satisfied. Your video is just fantastic. Very detailed and nice closeups to help understand the process. Thank you so much!
I'm working on my first raglan now. Everything was a breeze... Then I I started the sleeves and went "uhhh....." I tried to close it myself, and I was on the right track with pulling up bars and knitting together, but I was still getting big holes. I watched some other videos that didn't really tell me anything, but yours was very helpful. I'm certain I'll be able to finish my first sweater now after watching this. And, best of all, I can say "That was easy! Why did I put off trying a sweater for so long??"
Knitting with Suzanne Bryan Indeed it does. I had been almost afraid to try sweaters but decided that I would do it this year. August will make 3 years since I started knitting, and I knew I wanted to tackle them before then. Thanks again for the help!
Thanks, Suzanne. I'm a very solitary kind of person, and I don't know even one other knitter in person. And it's difficult for me to leave my home, so I've never shopped at an LYS. That makes it hard for me to gauge (pun intended) just how I'm coming along as a knitter. At first, I felt (pun unintended) like I picked it up (ditto) very quickly. I was knitting a brioche scarf within a month, and double knitting within 3 months, for example. Now that I'm getting farther along, there's naturally less to learn and so I've slowed down in acquiring new techniques and skills, and it leaves me kind of confused as to just what my skill level is. I think I'm probably an "advanced intermediate" knitter, but saying that also makes me feel a little pretentious since I've only been doing it for 3 years. I work on my knitting for about 6-8 hours each day though, on average, so I do give a lot to it. I'm finally at the point where I'm very comfortable with sewn bind-offs, seaming/grafting, picking up, and other stuff that isn't knitting proper -- things that I really avoided as much as possible until a few months ago. I really need to work on getting a consistent gauge more than anything at this point. Incidentally, I did finish my first sweater and it turned out great -- armpits and all! I had to do things slightly differently that you did in this video, since I was working with a baby sweater and had much fewer stitches. After picking up and ssk'ing and k2tog'ing, I pulled up a new column of stitches with a crochet hook where I had just a bit of a hole left over. But after working in my ends, it all worked out well and looks good. I've watched multiple instructional videos from several different knitters, and I'm glad that I found your channel. Unlike with some other channels I'm not naming, I don't find myself saying "No, that's incorrect" or "You're doing that in a really awkward way" as I'm watching. All of your videos I've seen make sense, are accurate and correct, and are easy to understand. Thanks for sharing your expertise with us!
Wow! You sound like me, several years ago. I was what I call a "closet knitter". I didn't know anyone who knit and we didn't have any local knit stores. It was before UA-cam and everything I learned was either by trial and error or from books. I am so glad to be of help to you! Happy knitting.
Thank you, Suzanne. I had this exact problem. Searched for “picking up stitches to close holes.” Found your video first. And it solved my problem, I had already knitted three rows. So I opened up three stitches around the hole and pulled out the three rows and used your method worked great. Thank you so much! I “liked” your video, subscribed and will definitely look at more of your videos in the future. Thanks again!
I was dreading picking up the underarm stitches so much that I let my Turtle Dove Sweater sit for a month without working on it. Found your video and it worked like a charm. My sleeves are in process and the underarms look perfect! Thank you so much. I'm subscribing right now to your You Tube Library.
What perfect timing pamela hasson! Happy knitting. Be sure to check out my second channel - Suzanne - Off the Cuff - where you can find my live streams and interact with me. ua-cam.com/channels/QBgFUvQzjz1RUm9NsgEA1A.html
You truly are "The Master Knitter". Especiall love this tutorial, addresses ALL the headaches I have always faced in the past, and with a beautiful finish!
Thanks, Suzanne! I'm knitting my first top-down pullover and your method definitely closed up the underarm holes. I will refer to your video for future projects.
Perfectly done! That is absolutely Brilliant! I've never seen that done, thank you so much for sharing this. Far cleaner looking then anything else I've ever seen!
It took me a few years to figure this out. I tried many many variations of this before getting it to work, and to be simple. Thank you and happy knitting.
Hello Susanne. I really like your video. Explains the method very clearly. I am a Portuguese knitter, from Porto. Thank you very much for the kindness with which you share your knowledge about knitting.
Depends on what you mean by how you usually weave in tails. Search my channel for "weaving in ends" and you will see how I weave in ends. It may help you a lot. Thank you!
this is a wonderful tutorial! thank you so much. It has been my go to video to help me with underarms every time i need to do one. i am a visual learner so seeing the steps and you pleasantly walking me through it has been perfect
I love this method and the detailed way you break it down. I’m using it on my current sweater project - my underarms look INFINITELY better than what I was trying to pass off before. This tutorial is a must for anyone looking to become a better process knitter. Thank you Suzanne!
You are amazing. Great work that you are doing. I have knit for over 40 years. Last two years i have spun my own year. Its nice to watch you. Thank You
Thank you Suzanne, I use this video every time I knit sleeves in a top down sweater! instructions are so clear to follow and the results turn out great every time! Your skills and willingness to share your knowledge is so Appreciated and has helped me become a better knitter thank you!
I am joining myself to all those knitters before me that's you've help ! I have now picked up the stitches on my first sleeve and i am sooo happy!! As a new and passionate knitter (one blissfull year already), i thank you so much Suzanne for all your tutorial videos. You are a gem 💎!
I come here whenever Im making a sweater. I dont make that many so I never remember how this is done. Thank God you recorded it on video for us all . This sweater uses a chained alpaca and knits loosely to 12sts per 10cm so I wasnt sure this would work as well as it did on the smaller tigher knits but it did! Im so happy because holes in loose knits just mess up the whole project . Thanking you again Suzanne O:-)
Thank you Suzanne. I have been searching for an answer for so many years, looking at so many other knitters.... You are my salvation.Very Happy with the result. Thank you. 👍
I have two sweaters on hooks right now. One is worked in the round bottom up and one is worked flat in pieces. These are my first ever sweaters so I'm saving this video to my knit folder to come back to when I get to the sleeves of my in-the-round sweater. Thank you for this video. I'm subscribing. Your camera position on your needles is perfect to see exactly what you are doing so that a student can replicate it. And you are not knitting too fast. This makes replicating your style easier if one chooses to try on varying styles.
This info is priceless. I literally had no idea what to do next on my raglan sweater after I reattached the arm stitches to the needles and your explanation was so perfectly lovely and clear. You are a very good teacher! THANK YOU!
So happy to have found this video Suzanne. It makes adding sleeves so much easier and neater. Feel blessed to have found such a wonderful tutorial. Thank you lots.
Suzanne: Thank you so much for these techniques that give knitted garments a 'proper' finished look. Knitting is such an elegant skill. I am basically self taught groping for ideas and techniques. You fill in the "holes" of skills not brought out in instructions. I mean like this video and picking up stitches and decreasing at armhole, etc. Now I'm an avid sewer, so I can tell when the knitting does not look right. I could say professional but that is over used. You remind me so much of my grandfather's family from Iowa, especially my Cousin Twila, my name sake. Thank you again for wanting to share your knowledge; WHAT A TREASURE! Keep on being yourself! Awesome!
Twila, thank you so much for sharing your feedback! I too am self taught (read a book as a child), and I love teaching the finer points of knitting, as well as the basics. I also have a Facebook page (same name) filled with knitters of every level and we love helping new knitters, please join us! 😊
My underarms thank you, Suzanne. I have used this method on several sweaters now and it works like a charm. Your video and your commentary are very helpful. Ditto to everything Wendy said....Suzanne is my go to guide on EVERY knitting problem or question!!!
I love how you demonstrated not only the how to do it, but also the why and how it works. Also, pre-pointing out how to better read the stitches was super helpful for applying it to my own work.

These knitting tips are just amazing, helping me enormously as I've just picked up knitting again after a 20 year gap, thank you Suzanne

Thank you so much for posting this! I’m knitting my first sweater and this is the only tutorial that makes sense!
You are very welcome Kristina Lugo! Happy knitting.
Hallo Suzanne, I love your Videos. They are so great. I learn so much with you.
Best regards from the South of Germany!
Maria.
Thank you so much, Maria, I really appreciate your kind words! Cheers from California! ❤️
Thanks again and happy knitting, Suzanne.
could you please correct the skip at two bars you lost me at this point
You are very welcome pcb0071! Happy knitting.
Wonderful! Doesn't it make you feel accomplished? Happy knitting. Be sure to subscribe to my channel if you haven't already.
Knitting with Suzanne Bryan Indeed it does. I had been almost afraid to try sweaters but decided that I would do it this year. August will make 3 years since I started knitting, and I knew I wanted to tackle them before then. Thanks again for the help!
You are doing great! 3 years and making sweaters. My kind of knitter.
So glad I was sent here through a chat on the MDK Lounge for the Daytripper KAL. I can't wait to use your technique on my next sweater.
I'm glad too, Mrs3Fish! Thanks so much for watching! 😊
Thank you so much! Happy New Year and Happy Knitting!

Quick question!! Would you weave in the tail like how you usually weave in ends?
Depends on what you mean by how you usually weave in tails. Search my channel for "weaving in ends" and you will see how I weave in ends. It may help you a lot. Thank you!

I love this method and the detailed way you break it down. I’m using it on my current sweater project - my underarms look INFINITELY better than what I was trying to pass off before. This tutorial is a must for anyone looking to become a better process knitter. Thank you Suzanne!

I am joining myself to all those knitters before me that's you've help ! I have now picked up the stitches on my first sleeve and i am sooo happy!! As a new and passionate knitter (one blissfull year already), i thank you so much Suzanne for all your tutorial videos. You are a gem 💎!
Thank you Ginette Doiron! Happy knitting.
Thanks, Suzanne! So helpful to find an instructor who uses the continental method, as I do.
You are so welcome! 🧶
As a learner knitting and knitting my first jumper your Video was very helpful Thank you 😊
Wonderful!
Thank you Suzanne. I have been searching for an answer for so many years, looking at so many other knitters.... You are my salvation.Very Happy with the result. Thank you. 👍
This is brilliant! I will return to this video over and over again, I’m sure! Thank you! ❤
Very clear video to follow and no holes. Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you, this is the best video on this technique, I no longer struggle to close those pesky holes
You are soft spoken and a great teacher 💞
Writing from Kenya, we do not have great yarn made locally but I am managing with what is available
Thank you Suzanne! This is a big help for my Latvian mitten thumbs!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you.
I so appreciate your videos. You are one of my favorite instructors. When I need a tutorial I always check your channel. Thank you!
What a lovely thing to say, Kim, thank you! ❤️
This info is priceless. I literally had no idea what to do next on my raglan sweater after I reattached the arm stitches to the needles and your explanation was so perfectly lovely and clear. You are a very good teacher! THANK YOU!
Thank you Paige Holm! Happy knitting.
So helpful and easy to understand. This is the first time I won’t have to go back and patch the holes under the arms. Thank you Suzanne!
Glad it was helpful! Happy New Year.
So happy to have found this video Suzanne. It makes adding sleeves so much easier and neater. Feel blessed to have found such a wonderful tutorial. Thank you lots.
Game changer....every time....every sweater!! THANK YOU so very much Suzanne!!
You are so welcome!
Suzanne:
Thank you so much for these techniques that give knitted garments a 'proper' finished look. Knitting is such an elegant skill. I am basically self taught groping for ideas
and techniques.
You're a magician Suzanne love all your videos. You wave your wand and solve all my knitting dilemmas - thank you.
You are so welcome!
