Oh my word, you are a brilliant teacher, calm voice, clear understable explanations. Even an error becomes a teachable/learning lesson. Step aside very pink knits. 😉👍Brilliant. Thank you. Still not doing magic, maybe one day.
After watching both your tutorial videos I find myself wishing that you would make a series of videos (or one long one) that goes from measurement, cast-on, ribbing, leg, heel flap, heel turn, gusset, foot and bindoff using a plain vanilla sock pattern. New sock knitters like me (age 70, gay, married for 5 years, togrether 35 years) really appreciate the time you take to explain what you are doing as well as provide anecdotes about how you came to knitting in general and sock knitting in particular. I'm sure I'm not the only 70 year old (retiring in September) who are going back to knitting or learning for the first time. Your patient guidance would be a godsend.
Hi Gary! Thanks so much for the comments. I’m working on a vanilla sock pattern now and could absolutely put together something more comprehensive. Stay tuned for more and happy knitting ❤️🧦
I’m mesmerized watching, while I’m knitting some stockinette. Funny..I start purling when you’re purling....! Then I catch myself! Ha! Everything you use...needles, magic loop, etc. I do as well!! I love your voice and calmness! And of course all of your podcasts are so enjoyable too. Thank you for keeping me company! 🧶
I just wanted to write a note of THANKS to you for making this video. I am a senior citizen but still trying to learn how to knit socks. I spent 2 full evening trying to get the "German Twisted Cast On".... before it finally registered in my head. I have that down pat now. But I couldn't get past the LADDERS on the outsides. I just couldn't find out how to fix what I was doing wrong. Before going to bed in the wee hours of this morning, I watched this video and tried it this afternoon. AND BINGO!!! I am going straight ahead without the BIG LOOPS on the ends. THANK YOU. HOLDING the needles like you showed & that made a huge difference. Bless your dear heart for sharing!!
Thanks, Gordon! Funny enough, I was getting some hand fatigue while working on a sweater and a tried a different way to tension the yarn based on a video I saw of someone knitting. It’s so handy to have a couple of different ways in case you need to switch it up. Happy knitting! ❤️🧶
Hi Justin Thank you for this video it was brilliant and you are such a good teacher and such a calm voice. Hope we see more of your tutorials as you make me feel that I could actually do it myself. Take care and keep safe both of you, see you soon.👵
Even though I have been knitting for 54 years I enjoy your tutorials. I learned that you can cast on pearl wise in German cast on today! Can’t wait to try it on next socks (which I always have on the needles).
Thank you Justin for teaching me the twisted cast on. Also the tip about how to place the cord. Awesome! Helped me stop picking up the ladders, which by the way I still can't figure out how I do it. You guys are a breath of fresh air

All I can say is WOW!! I have been knitting for over thirty years, and I have watched a TON of tutorial videos on the German Twisted cast on, and I have never seen one that shows the knit and the purl variations. Visually the video is excellent. It's easy to see your hands demonstrating, nice and slow, easy to follow. You're a natural teacher, the breakdown of the steps is excellent. Thank you so much for all the fabulous tips and suggestions. I hope you continue to do tutorials. Thank you!!

Wonderful cast on!!! Excellent explanation!!! I know the same cast-on as the "Norwegian Cast-On." I love you yarn, and again, I love your explanation of the cast-on!!! Thanks so much again!!!
You are the best teacher on sock knitting and I have tried most. I hope you will continue to pass on your method . I have been knitting socks on double points for sixty years and I have been finding my hands are unable to hold the needles. Won’t stop knitting socks so I am learning the Magic Loop. You make that cast on very clear, I think I can do it even if I have to change hands. The joy of being lefthanded, nobody ever shows it like I can do it without have to change hands. I am so happy my grandmother was lefthanded to so she could teach me.
Thank you, Justin, for this very nice tutorial. I have wanted to knit socks for my sons for awhile now. The Bearded Purl podcast has totally inspired me by your sock knitting and the sock purls of wisdom. I cast one on today with your help! Well done and again, thanks!

I have been doing the twisted German cast on for a while and loving it. Thanks for demonstrating the purl cast on - I am going to try it on the next mitten and sock I cast on!
Fantastic video, great tip about the cord over the needle to help decrease gap and laddering! A little tip for viewers to watch in slow motion, go to the three vertical tiny dots in the upper right of the screen, click on them, and it gives you the option to slow down or speed up the video 😁 Thanks for the video!,!
Thank you for sharing with us. I always use twisted German caston, thanks for showing the purl caston, it is new to me. I do my knit cast on without twisting my thumb twice, same result. Nice conversational instructions!

Thank you so much for this Justin. German twisted cast on is my go to but I never even thought about doing it in rib. Just cast on a hat using your tutorial and I love it! These new techniques and tutorials are priceless.

I have just found your channel & love what I have seen. I’m an avid sock knitter, but have learnt a couple of really good tips from your podcast today. Cheers & thank you 🥰❤️💕😊😘😍
Another great tutorial. I like the tip on keeping the cable on top of needle to avoid ladders. I always had that problem when joining in the round. Thank you so much. 💓
I have done German twisted cast-on before but never seen it done in rib! Love this so much. Thank you for such an excellent tutorial! I’m going to have to give this a try on my next pair of socks.
Once again a very thorough tutorial. My next sock cast-on will be this one. I love the additional stretch. Keep the tutorials coming. You really do an excellent job. I started sock knitting on DPN and just recently moved to 9”. Magic loop will be my next jump. I hope you have a favorite heel and toe tutorial coming up.
Thanks, Eva! I think you’ll really like the cast on. I’ve recorded a video for my favorite heel and am planning to record a toe video this weekend. Stay tuned! ❤️🧦
Justin I’m going to try this it looks fantastic! You’re a very good teacher! Thank for starting out slowly for those of us that haven’t ever seen this cast on. ✅👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻🧶🧶🥰🥰
Justin. Great tutorial! I will come back again and again until this is second nature! T German twisted cast on is my go-to CO, but I had never seen it as a rib nor a long-tail method. For sock knitting I’m a DPN girl. I tried magic loop but didn’t like the tension/laddering that happens at the stress points. Your clear instructions for managing your cables was brilliant. Thanks so much!🤩
Thanks, Peggy!! I’m glad you found it helpful! I’m still working on my magic loop tension now that I’ve moved down to a US 0 but I’m almost there. It’s funny how the tiniest change can upset the balance 🤣❤️🧦
So glad I watched this video! It is extremely well done and inspired me to want to try this technique! Please know, when a teacher says, well done, it is a sincere compliment. Love that yarn also!
Hey, Justin...i came for the caston and stayed for the magic loop. I’m a two circulars kinda gal but can always appreciate a great tutorial. Lots of little goodies in your magic loop segment others don’t mention. Look forward to more of those goodies. nycSox
Thanks for this tutorial, Justin! I used it to try German twisted cast-on for the first time for a pair of socks. Once I practiced a bit, it went smoothly, and I like the result.
Thank you so much for this great tutorial. I'm a new sock knitter and this cast-on and the anatomical toe tutorials have been really helpful. My cuffs and toes are perfect now :)
For me, picking up stitches on socks is the most angst making part of knitting socks. I'll have to give your method a try. I like the way you close the gusset hole. I do something similar but your way looks much easier! Thank you!
Thanks Michael! Someone suggested sliding a small dpn through all of the stitches at once and just knitting off of that. I tried it with the second sock and it worked really well also! Happy knitting ❤️🧦
@@thebeardedpurlpodcast I use Rosanne Richardson's Tips and Tricks video for picking up stitches and closing the gusset hole. On my next sock, I will give your methods a try!
I hope this is not your last sock video. You are very easy to understand and follow. While some of your techniques seem to work well for you, I need to use a few modifications. I find that, as a continental knitter, it is far easier to hold the needles together when knitting across. However, your suggestion to go under the needle when starting the row is a game changer. I would pay for complete sock tutorial from cuff to toe from you. Thanks again.
Thanks, Gary! I’m glad you’re able to modify for continental knitting! I’m planning to record my favorite techniques for each step though the sock. I just recorded one yesterday for the heel flap & turn and we’ll get it posted soon. Then I’ll record one for the toe. Happy knitting! 🥰🧦
So cool! The top to have that ease is what I am looking for. I have not as of yet made any socks! It’s called sockaphobia! So, I have been watching countless video’s and eureka! Finally my search is over! Taking the recommendations for the yarn to use and do love the circular method. Now I have knit sweaters to mittens and gloves but socks lets do it! Thank you for the ease in your instructions and your calming voice is a great plus in learning. No pressures right!
Thank you for this video. I just started my first cuff down this morning and did a all knit CO. I will be re-doing it. That you again. May y’all have a blessed week. 😊
Omg I've been thinking of learning the german twisted cast on purling for a while now, and always thought it was too much effort. Thanks for sharing! Definitely going to use this on my next socks.
Great tutorial. Very clear. First cuff done!!! YAY ! I botched the first couple of tries but stuck with it and YAY...PERFECT and so easy when you get the hang of it. THANK YOU !!!

What a great tutorial! I've been wanting to learn to knit socks with the Magic Loop method and your instructions have been so helpful! I'm now 3" into my first sock. Thank you and keep doing more tutorials!
I watched someone else's tutorial on this cast-on and found it so frustrating and strenuous that I gave up on it, but your technique is different (something about the thumb!) and now I know that I'll be able to do this. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much, I have been using the slip stitch method, read about this and somehow got lucky enough to find your video. I always learn better with a visual lesson. I will definitely be doing this technique on my next pair of socks!
Justin, this is another wonderful tutorial. I just finished casting on a sock and it came out great! Of course, it took me a while to complete, but love the look. You are a great teacher! I so enjoy watching you and Caleb! Happy knitting!
Another great tutorial Justin! You are very good at this. I tried the garter stitch heel flap edge from your last video and. I no longer have holes in my gusset. Thanks. I’m going to try this cast on. It looks very nice.
Another great tutorial Justin. I already use German Twisted cast on, but usually all knits and not sure if I do it exactly the same as you , but I'm going to to do it along with you on my next pair because it looks so good and I'll see if I need to adjust my cable too. I'm self taught via you tube, so any new ideas or hints and tips are always welcome, look after yourself and thanks again xo

Thanks once again Justin for another great tutorial, you really are a good teacher and your voice is very pleasant to listen to. I love learning news things lately, but when I don’t feel like it, I go to my favourite no brainer methods also. I also will use my favourite techniques when using someone’s pattern if I don’t feel like learning anything new. It just depends on my mood. I’m not sure why, but I don’t like magic loop. I’ve tried the 9 inch circulars, they are too small for my old hands. I’ve always loved dpns but lately, I really like using two circular needles for socks, mittens and hats. For some reason, I never have the laddering when using two circulars. Thanks again and I look forward to the next Bearded Purl Podcast. You Two are just too cute.
That’s great Lynda! I actually learned to knit socks 2 at a time on 2 circular needles!! The main reason I do everything magic loop is then I don’t have to keep track of so many needles 🤣🤣❤️🧦

Awesome!! I’m glad it’s more comfortable for you 🥰🧦
I have just found your channel & love what I have seen. I’m an avid sock knitter, but have learnt a couple of really good tips from your podcast today. Cheers & thank you 🥰❤️💕😊😘😍
Thanks for stopping by Joan! Socks forever! ❤️🧦
Another great tutorial. I like the tip on keeping the cable on top of needle to avoid ladders. I always had that problem when joining in the round. Thank you so much. 💓
You’re welcome, Lanita! I hope it helps you! 🥰🧦
Great video! I love all of the small details and techniques. Thank you
Thanks so much Tahlia! ❤️🧦
Thanks, Debbie! I hope you like it! ❤️🧶
I am so excited to learn to do this in pattern instead of only knitting.
Justin. Great tutorial! I will come back again and again until this is second nature! T
German twisted cast on is my go-to CO, but I had never seen it as a rib nor a long-tail method.
Aw thanks, Kathy!! That’s so sweet ❤️. I hope you enjoy the cast on (and Michele’s yarn is AMAZING) 🥰🧦
Hey, Justin...i came for the caston and stayed for the magic loop. I’m a two circulars kinda gal but can always appreciate a great tutorial. Lots of little goodies in your magic loop segment others don’t mention. Look forward to more of those goodies. nycSox
Thanks, Carla! Glad you’re enjoying them...more on the way! Happy knitting ❤️🧶
Many thanks for another great video will give this a go today on my cast on for my one week sock challenge
You’re welcome! Happy sock knitting! ❤️🧦
Yay! So happy you found this video helpful in your sock knitting 😊 🧦
You are such an awesome teacher! Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge!
Thanks, Guinevere! ❤️🧦
Thanks enjoyed your tutorials. I have used the German cast on to knit but never purl. Oh, great tip on keeping the cable on top. Thanks.
You’re welcome! Happy knitting Jeannie! ❤️🧶
Brilliant! And I’m a dpn sock knitter! Thank you for a fabulous tutorial!
Justin
I loved your cast on. You’ve got such a gentle style. I m looking forward to your cuff also.
Your podcasts are some of the very best. Thank you
This is the best tutorial ever! I so appreciate your calmness and clarity. Thank you so much.
Very clear and concise tutorial again you are very good at explaining and showing us how to do it thank you stay safe xx
OMG! A wonderful tutorial! Thank you Justin!
You’re welcome!! I think you’ll love it! Good luck with you’re sock! ❤️🧦
Omg I've been thinking of learning the german twisted cast on purling for a while now, and always thought it was too much effort. Thanks for sharing! Definitely going to use this on my next socks.
You bet Rachel! I think you’ll like it a lot. Happy knitting! ❤️🧦
Great tutorial. Very clear. First cuff done!!! YAY ! I botched the first couple of tries but stuck with it and YAY...PERFECT and so easy when you get the hang of it. THANK YOU !!!
Great video but I’m really in love with your counter top!
Haha thanks JoAn!! ❤️
Great tutorial , Justin. You are a natural teacher and your voice is so soothing. This is going to be my new sock cast on. Thank you so much. X Julie from Indiana
Thanks, Julia!! I hope you love the cast on 🥰🧦
This is brilliant. I love the German Twisted Cast on but never thought about doing it in purl - will use this for my next sox.
Thanks, Mesheela! I hope you like it! ❤️🧦
What a great tutorial! I've been wanting to learn to knit socks with the Magic Loop method and your instructions have been so helpful! I'm now 3" into my first sock. Thank you and keep doing more tutorials!
Fantastic!! Congratulations, Susan!! ❤️🧦
I love your tutorials, you are so calming to listen too. Definitely bookmarked for the future!
I watched someone else's tutorial on this cast-on and found it so frustrating and strenuous that I gave up on it, but your technique is different (something about the thumb!) and now I know that I'll be able to do this. Thank you so much!
Awesome!! I’m glad you found it helpful! Good luck! ❤️🧶
I’m loving the look of this in patterns. I’ve recently discovered the German twisted co, but now I can’t wait to try this in pattern!
Thanks, Tina! Glad you liked it! And thanks for joining us - happy knitting! ❤️🧦🧶
Will definitely give the German Twisted Cast on a try. Thanks so much.
You’re welcome, Darlene! Hope you enjoy it! ❤️🧦
Another great tutorial Justin! You are very good at this. I tried the garter stitch heel flap edge from your last video and. I no longer have holes in my gusset. Thanks. I’m going to try this cast on. It looks very nice.
Awesome, Sherri! I’m glad you liked the heel flap - it’s now my go to! ❤️🧦
I hope you give it a try! I learned so much from UA-cam, so I’m very glad to give back. Happy knitting!! ❤️🧶

My gosh, I didn’t even know this was a thing! Now I actually might be able to get my knitted mittens ON! 😇
I'm so excited to learn how to knit and want to make socks. I truly believe I'll be able to learn from you. You are such a great teacher. Now to purchase the supplies. ❤
YES!!!! Go for it Giny!! Let us know if we can help you in any way. ❤️🧶🧦
Okay! Yesterday I complimented Caleb on his versatile crafting interests and how much I’ve learned from him. Now I need to compliment you on your fantastic tutorials. Very well done. So clearly shown and explained! I too like knitting my socks cuff down and the gusset heel. You are both so talented and always enjoy your podcast. Thanks!
Thanks, Susan, that’s so sweet of you! Thanks for hanging out with us! ❤️🧶
Bookmarked!!! this is so clear, thank you so much!
You’re welcome! ❤️🧦
Thank you so much! I’ve never knit a sock but you’ve managed to get me to feel like I could. Here goes🎊🎉😘
You totally can!!! Be patient with yourself and give it a go ❤️🧦
I’m definitely trying this! Thank you! ❤️
You’re welcome! Hope you like it! ❤️🧦
I will be trying this technic on the next pair of socks that I make.
I think you’ll like it! ❤️🧦
