Saboteurs - Norwegian Heavy Water Sabotage - Sabaton History 011 [Official]
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 жов 2024
- As the scientific masterminds of the early 1940's discover the destructive capabilities of splitting atoms, some of them try to weaponise it. One special product is important in the creation of such a weapon: heavy water. The Norwegians have a plant that produces heavy water at Vemork. The Allies, desperate to slow down the German progress towards the development of a nuclear weapon, decide to sabotage it. The Sabaton song 'Saboteurs' is about the dangerous mission that is conducted by the British and Norwegians in the winter of 1940 to sabotage the Norwegian Heavy Water production for the Nazi's.

So amazing these guys pulled off a mission like it was made for an action movie
Psycho Yoshi And then to think the only time this got featured in games was in Battlefield V. And they got it all wrong.
+Evert De Rijke It's Battlesoy V: Extra Woke Edition. lol
@@kerlongsjorlejov1945 Actually, Hearts of Iron III: For the Motherland expansion added strategic resources. Norwegian province of Telemark had "Heavy Water", which would give the controller +40% to nuclear research.
[EDIT: Googled these. According to the original Medal of Honor, heavy water plant was destroyed by an American OSS Agent in February 1945. The game was released in 1999. So MoH was far ahead BF in this case.
Enemy Front also features Telemark. EDIT]
BF1942: Secret Weapons of WWII has a map Telemark, but this is even more historically inaccurate than BF V: large UK force attacks Telemark with Shermans, Spitfires and with US LVTPs. At least in V it is a small force.
And I doubt they tried to represent Gunnerslide in BF. You only destroy the shipments, not the facility itself. And besides, commando strike is mentioned in that campaign's end credits. Which can be confused with the resistance fighter, so I can see why people mix it up.
@@kerlongsjorlejov1945 This mission was kinda featured in Hidden & Dangerous II, you played as the SAS and had to infiltrate and destroy naci facility where the research of messerschmitt me 262 took place. I don't know whether this mission really happened, but if not it might have been inspired by the heavy water one.
Edit: Still more accurate than BattleField: Vagina
@@MDMetal That's one new name. Haven't heard of that one.
In history class, sees notification.
Hey, technically I'm not completely off task.
You're lucky to have Sabaton while you're still in school. If they'd been around when I was in high school, I would've aced every test about WW II. 🤘
Happened in good old AVID
I would approve of my students following this channel.
@@MDMetal This is the hook I wish I had when I taught history.
It's unfortunate that many history teachers across the U.S. and the world don't know about this band. Each song Sabaton does is a history lesson and Sabaton History and Indy Neidell do an excellent job with their UA-cam channel.
Damn those special forces guys are bad ass
Yes thay are my great grandad was one of them
Mike Lombard That’s the point.

@Houston Landen yes no one cares
You missed one of the more comic moments, when the caretaker lost his glasses an they stopped to find them!
The film Kampen om tungtvannet (1948) also has many of the actual people involved in the sabotage playing themselves reenacting the actual events.
Same here, I was thinking of that old man and his glasses
I’d like to see that movie.
I wonder how many times it took y'all to nail that intro
my thoughts at first too
Only bit of input from me is this is still gonna be _somebody's_ first video on this channel, so if that's gonna be a thing, maybe put their respective names over their heads in Post or something, no hate, just saying...
I hate your grammar
I want to say 6 times
Those Norwegians literally pulled a Mission Impossible. Amazing!!
you know they made a seris about this evetn rigth? its called Kampen om tungtvannet (battle of the heavywater
Mission Impossible: Gunnerside
Indeed, it was a Mission Impossible, but real.
Good morning Mr. Rønneberg! As you know, the Nazis seems to be using the Norsk Hydro factory at Rjukan in the Telemark-region of Norway to produce heavy water. We believe that such can be used to produce atomic weapons, which could have devastating effects on the course of the war. Thus it has become a priority for us to prevent them from developing such weapons by any means necessary. Our previous attempt, called “Operation Freshman”, was a failure, but this time we will rely on a selected team of Norwegian commandos who are experts at sabotage, which you will lead. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to infiltrate the Norsk Hydro factory, blow up the heavy water containers, and escape as quickly as possible. As always, should you or any of your men be captured or killed, the Allies will take full responsibility to prevent any German reprisals against Norwegian civilians. This message will self-destruct in five seconds. Good luck Joachim!
At first i thought it was my headphones malfunctioning at the intro before i realised they were speaking at the same time. hahahaa
This is getting out of hand! Now there are 2 of them!
No, sir... ALL THIRTEEN!

Sabaton History channel shows more history than History channel itself!
New sabaton album is now about how aliens built the pyramids
Where's the *MIC DROP* ?
Sadly, that doesn't take much
I have several old History Channel WWII docs recorded from more than 10 years ago, and I religiously keep them on an hard disk. Those were the golden History Channel days... from Commando operations to WWII secret weapons/vehicles... absolute gold. Specially considering the disgusting current state of History Channel nowadays.
Fortunately we now have UA-cam channels that took that mantle like this one, Indy's channels, TIK's channel, and others... like Potential History that puts a funny meme twist into it and makes it even more fun to learn history.
I don't know man, I mean- Sabaton History has not ONCE talked about aliens- everyone know they were involved in every facet of history.
That feeling when your favorite metal band and Indy Neidell upload a history video on your birthday.
Belated happy birthday!!
@@SabatonHistory Thank you guys so much! Made my day.
I am sure there is a "Handsome Italians" fan club somewhere 😀. The saboteurs were badass and definitely up there with the most important people in history. Great song, and great presentation!
What about the "Subway" fans they're also, badass.

@@V1K1NGofDOOM No offense, but Battlefield was Always Bad when it tried Singleplayer, with one exception.(the Story is Always Shit)
Edit: maybe it's an unpopular opinion, but I like the Missions in the New Battlefield more than before(gameplaywise)
@@dimitriosdrossidis9633 the issue with BFV is their strong claims to historical accuracy. I think the gameplay and visuals are incredible but PR snorted a few too many highlighters.
@@dasauto7346 yeah I know what you mean, but in defense of Battlefield, they were never good with their accuracy. That and I really think that their PR is just becoming with every Game more 'retarded'. Battlefield 5 I think just was more damaging, because they wanted to Show the lesser known Theaters of the war and really I wanted Jugoslawya, China or any other Front than what they have chosen.
I don't have a problem with ahistorical games, right up to the point where they advertise how historically accurate they are.
I don't have a problem with Wolvenstein, I do have a problem with Battlefield.
In 2011, I was working in the oilfields of Canada and had just discovered Sabaton. I found this song and it helped me endure the grueling labor and winter , having Norwegian heritage as well it gave me the confidence to push through, as if the song was written for me. Thank you so much! "They were the heroes of the cold, WARRIOR SOUL! "
You're welcome! Cheers!
As a representative for the norwegian government, we renounce your heritage. The SS is an organization we would not like to associate ourselves with, and there fore, if you ever visit, or even think of visiting this beautiful country, your body will not be found. Any chances we could crowdfund Sabaton into becoming a Nuclear Power?
One of the hidden gems that you don't hear much. I love this song.

Honestly personally its their best song for sure definitely from that album.
I think Pär an Indy should be the choir for the new songs after hearing the intro
On that video we found out that we can learn not only history with Sabaton but physics too. Maybe this can help me on my exam.

Having been in the Vemork plant i can highly recommend it; there is a museum in there with quite a few interesting pieces about the war in Norway
Science lesson, and history lesson all in one? Awesome!
I’m getting ready to go over to Norway and do a re-enactment of the sabotage mission and ski the escape rout to Sweden. This year will mark the 80th anniversary of the Hero’s of Telemark. Glad I found your song, it’s awesome!
I got to visit the Museum at Norsk Hydro and got one of the last sanples of heavy water they had found in an old box and decided to sell. I am married to a Norwegian and my wifes Grandfather was a resistance leader so this was amazing to find! So happy to have found Sabaton!
So happy to have you on board with us! 🤘
battlefield 5 really pushed there own agenda in their game, completely changing fact from fiction
Saboteurs is one of those Sabaton songs I usualy don't have in mind, but when I hear it I'm super hyped! My great grandfather, alongside his Panzergrenadier unit, actually once guarded a heavy water transport.
This video needs some pecan pie for the great trilogy to be complete. Heavy metal, heavy water, heavy food.
xD ^^
This piece of history could be straight out of a James Bond movie. Damn This was an amazing story and I've NEVER heard of it!
here you go :)
These videos are so amazing! As an old broken down music lover and retired history instructor, it is like I've gone to heaven.
I'm glad to hear you enjoy them! Thanks!
Ministry of ungentlemanly warfare (the book) told a nice story about all this :)
Thanks for covering this! Love your songs. Greetings from Norway
Actually, the Vemork heavy water basement plant was recovered recently, and now they are diggin it out/restoring it! It will be set up as a museum may be from summer 2022.
I like this guy. He looks like a private detective in the US in the 40's.
A little correction needed. Sir Ernest Rutherford may have been working for the University of Manchester at the time, but he is not British. He is a New Zealander.
While we're talking about corrections: Telemark is the name of a (now former) county in Norway, not a municipality.
it was great to hear that demo, that's the kind of thing I'd like to see more from Sabaton, maybe a release of old demo tracks
we'll see ;)
I’m hoping inmate 4859 will be covered soon. It’s my favorite song and it’s a story I think people should know
I was in Glenmore, Scotland last weekend where these brave men trained. Weather wasn't all that great, very authentic experience for scottish winter.
Theres an episode on Disney+ made by National Geographic from a series called "Drain the Oceans" that talks a little bit about this and how exactly the Hydro ended up at the bottom of the lake. Very interesting stuff. I highly recommend the show.
Ah yes.
Remember that time Dice gave us mission based on th.. actually neverind forget what I said
Notice the word based...
The original Playstation Medal of Honor did it best in my opinion.
Yes franss i do remember they did so in the game Battlefield 1942
As a norwegian myself, i get a proud feeling when i listen to this song.
One of the best guitar riffs I ever heard from Sabaton, too.
I've shaken hands with Joachim Rønneberg.
Greetings from Poland 🇵🇱
I can't wait for Your new album - The Great War :)
One of my fav events in WW2 and one of my fav Sabaton songs. What those people did was truly amazing!
On the downside, now I wanna listen to that old version of the song...
I was singing saboteurs this morning before checking my phone....coincidence, I think NOT!
This means that If we want a certain song we just sing it earlier that day.
This is in my opinion one of the most interesting raids if WW2. I have driven past the hydro plant one or twice and I plan to visit it this summer
Wow. Just wow... Thank you! I was at Vemork yesterday! 1 of my fav sabaton songs ( yes, im Norwegian) listening to this masterpiece at Vemork is awesome! Goosebumps!!! If u do a cosert at the Hydro plant one day, i can die happy
If history had been this presented as well as this in High School I wouldn't have been the only one paying attention....
One of the most amazing episodes of the war
Indy and Sabaton! This is my favourite channel on UA-cam! Keep on rocking guys!
If I named that fanclub, it would be called "Ghost Division" or "Sabaton Division"
Or Gay division if you don’t get this reference I’m disappointed
Cyberian Wolf, that would actually be pretty smart. Only people who know the reference would get in.
I've walked the same way the saboteurs did to get to Vemork and its impressive that the made most of that trip on skis me and my friends had a hard time just walking that route😂
I love this song .I've always been fascinated by this story since I saw the movie. Thank you very much for the video and very accurate scientific explanation, by the way.😀😀👏👏👏👏🤘🤘🤘
I think we can all agree that is would've be an infinitely better mission then the one BF5 had.
practically every Norwegian knows this story haha
@DolaCat absolutely
This guys are great!!
Indy and Pär are the best history teachers 👍🏼
Wow! Sneaky allies! That's so crazy! Another great episode guys!
Very sneaky indeed! Thanks!
I hate how EA replaced these brave men with a random mother and daughter in Battlefield V. So disrespectful. And they're the ones calling us "uneducated."
Battlefield V is a work of fiction - they are free to do whatever they want - which they clearly did, and you are free to like that or not.
@@SabatonHistory true, though for a game that's supposedly based off WW2, it's still weird to think they'd change this bit.
I thought that BFV was supposed to tell some ”untold stories” about the WW2, but instead of doing that, they take something that happened and smear it with some SJW bullshit
@@JojokimVT Exactly. I think that's why It's more disturbing than other shits.

Oh I didn't know that, thanks!
I feel like there should be a quick note in there, when talking about Hahn's nobel prize, that the woman in that photo, Meitner, was responsible for a good amount of the nuclear research going on in that lab. This is why we have Meitnerium rather than Hahnium on the periodic table.
The work of Jewish and female scientists during this period, especially in occupied territories, often gets overlooked but deserves a mention.
One of my cousins was in the Norwegian underground. At the end of the war, he blew up the ferry that went from the mainland out to the island because the resistance was told the Germans were using the ferry to transport heavy water out to the sea side of the island to ship to Germany.
My former landlord, Mr. Eugene Gutierrez, was assigned to an American commando unit tasked with destroying this plant in Norway. I suppose that was the backup plan, in case the Norwegian fighters failed. Mr. G.’s training included learning to ski, which was quite a novelty for a south Texas boy who had never seen snow before. But since the Norwegian attack on the plant succeeded, the American commandos were sent to Italy, where they did sabotage behind the German lines as the Allies advanced up the Italian peninsula. It was said that they were not expected to return from any of the missions they were sent on. But some of them did. After the war, Mr. Gutierrez used the G.I. Bill to finish his college education, and eventually became a school superintendent. About 65 years after the war, he was belatedly awarded a Bronze Star. This year, Mr. Gutierrez celebrated his 100th birthday. He still lives in my town in Texas.
Update: Mr. Gene Gutierrez died this summer (2022), just days short of his 101st birthday. What a life he had!
That power plant reprezentative is surely a Sabaton fan and saw an opportunity to stage a concert at his work place. Smart.
Yes! Thanks you guys, this is one of my favorite songs of yours. I'm so happy you did this video despite the song's obscurity.
I love your channel keep up the great stuff!!
I love the old rehearsal tape! Would love to hear some more if they have some.
The mini series the heavy water war is a pretty good watch
The fact that you guys managed to do that intro without failing is simply amazing
I'm sure it was done multiple times.
in fact, that was their 70th attempt.
it really wasn't ;)
Interesting that Par knows so much about the history, while Indy is so familiar with the behind the scenes of the music.
BF5 really screwed this one up
Adding to the Science point of the show today, the only vehicle that could launch the original design for Germany's bomb was an underdevelopment vehicle designated A9/A10, nicknamed the Amerika. It was planned to be used against the US mainland like the V-2(The SS designation for the A-4 vehicle) was used against England.
Awesome video! Love every minute of each episode can't wait for the next song!
This is my favorite show on UA-cam right now.
These stories/events are really intense considering that few people know the possible impact they couldve had.
Well right off the bat that intro tripped me out😂 It's scary to think that Hitler could have had nukelar bombs. Great history!

Incredible how they pulled this of! Genious planning
This was lowkey an Atomic Chemistry lesson.
Ernest Rutherford was New Zealand born. He’s on our $100 dollar note :)

The last of the saboteurs, joachim rønneberg died last year. One of the most important things (exept for operation gunnerside) he did was talking about the people that didnt survive to make people understand that freedom isnt free
It's sad we didn't get this in BF5 instead of that BS they gave us about this very mission. Love this song
Damn Pär is making me question my sexuality
That's a very good physics explanation of atomic bombs.
