  • Aces In Exile prevail! Did you know, that the war in the skies above Britain was not just fought by men from the British Isles alone? It was also fought by men who were forced to flee their home-countries from Nazi occupation and journey through war-torn Europe to continue the resistance. As France fell, pilots from Poland, Czechoslovakia and Canada found themselves once more in the seat of foreign fighter-planes, to fend off the German war-machine in the Battle of Britain.

Fun fact: the 303 Squadron was continuing the traditions of the Kościuszko's Escadrille (at first the 7th, later 111th Fighter Escadrille of the Polish Air Force), which was initially formed by American volunteers during the Polish-Soviet War. It was obviously named in honor of Tadeusz Kościuszko, a great Polish (and also kinda Lithuanian and Belarusian, depending on who you ask) revolutionary national hero, who also fought in the American Revolution. That's why the insignia of 303 Squadron look a bit American, with the stars and stripes.

I WILL ADD SOME MORE TO THIS STORY. Main founder of american Kosiciuszko squadron (called 303 in RAF forced) during Polish - Soviet war was Merian Caldwell Cooper (totally interestic person with awsome biography en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merian_C._Cooper). His grand grandfather fought under comand of polish officer on exile general US cavalery Kazimierz Pulaski(Pułaski in polish; en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casimir_Pulaski) during American Revolution. Pulaski died wounded in battle on hands of Merian Cooper grand grand father. Story of polish general who died during american war of independance were passed from one member of Cooper family to another. Merian C Cooper at the end WWI in France when he heard that Poles need some help in Polish war of indpendance drafted without hesitation. He also found other american adventurers who would like to fight in Polish air force and .... they fought BLOODY AWSOME. Siemon Budionny Soviet general communist butcher like his all red cavalery army who made war crimes and purges on Ukrainian and Polish soil hated them(americans) so much that he set a price for every american head that Russians will bring to him. Three(from 17) of that hero americans died during that war and are buried among other polish heroes on "Polish Eagle Lvov Cementary" (here is statue to theirs glory www.google.com/search?q=Lwow+Cmentarz+Orlat+pomnik+amerykanskich+lotnikow&rlz=1C1AVFB_enPL855PL857&sxsrf=ALeKk03QCw5RiW5mvrBjLqUdq_hMyl35PQ:1584704826121&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjthvDB_ajoAhXkxIsKHSMjBYAQ_AUoAnoECA0QBA&biw=1280&bih=864) cementary is placed on ukrianian soil in Lvov and is main point to visit by every polish tourist who visit Lvov. Cooper himself after war were movie producer (King Kong 1933) and .... CO Pan Am airlines.
There is great book about history of 303 Kościuszko squadron made by american writers. www.amazon.com/Question-Honor-Kosciuszko-Squadron-Forgotten-ebook/dp/B001334IVU They wanted to write a adventure book about imiigrant pilots who fougt against Nazis during battle of Britain. They ended with great historical book that is very interesting and easy to read. It was bestseller in Poland.
Another interesting story is that Witold Urbanowicz polish pilot from 303 Kosciuszko squadron. Most deadiest and best polish pilot from all polish pilots nick name "Cobra" (Frantisek died during Battle of Britain) in 1943 drafted into american squadron "Flying Tigers" who fought in china. He flew in P-40N Kittyhawk fighter in one from many operations he shot down two Japanese planes. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Witold_Urbanowicz After war Urabnowicz were accust of being spy of western powers by Soviet so he couldnt live in Communist Poland. He emigrated into USA and used his knowledge for american airlines companies American Airlines, Eastern Airlines and Republic Aviation.

I believe they held many records, as i e most downed enemies in one sortie. Then again, I might be biased... :-)) And as Urbanowicz of 303 said: ...because we do not beg for freedom. We fight for it!Ps: My deepest respect to you Sabaton guys, yours "Uprising" and 40:1 are so awesome that everytime I play it, I can hardly hold back my tears. For its small population size the New Zealanders sent proportionally the largest amount of Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen to fight in the second world war. Wether it as volunteers in the UK armed forces or as it's own divisions. The main architect of RAF tactics was also a Kiwi air vice Marshall Keith Park. The aces in exile were well known and recognized. Their not being allowed to participate in the victory parade is speculated to be due to soviet pressuring and unfortunately fell into poor recognition over the years until the internet allowed the information to circulate easily again in the UK outside of history nuts.
That and also 95% of Poles and Czechs i know point it out if they catch even a wiff of discussion about WW2.

If I recall correctly. Since Polish Forces in the West were under Polish (Democratic) Goverment on Exile, while Soviets installed a new communist goverment in Poland and pushed for theirs to be the only legitimate one. Soviets pressured towards not featuring forces serving under the opposing goverment at all, and Allies didn't want to anger Soviets at that point by featuring those on the parade, so initially no Polish forces were invited. That obviously didn't sit well, neither among Poles on exile nor among a lot of Brits. So later they settled on inviting Polish Air Force, who were the most famous and decorated, but only them. Polish airmen however declined the later invitation, as they deemed it unfair if only they were present and not their brothers in arms from other branches, so they would rather not be there at all. That act of solidarity didn't change the minds of higher-ups though, so by the end no Polish representants were on the parade.

It is hard to chose a preferred Sabaton song. In a previous comment i wrote that ONE of my favourites is Union, and it is true, alongside with The attack of dead men and others. But for sure, Aces in exile is THE favourite one. The images it depicts, the emotions it unleashes...every damnit time i listen to it i get goosebumps...And if i try to sing it, i always risk ending up crying. And i can assure there's nothing else that gives me vibes like this song. Honor to the Aces and Long live Sabaton!
EDIT: about sountracks. I hope Sabaton team will read this. I wanna make you know that the soundtrack version of the Great War is simply incredible. I loved it since i discovered it and now i can't stop listening to it!

Great for New Zealand to get a mention, in fact Air Chief Marshal Sir Keith Park commanded RAF squadrons that defended London and the South East.
If you are ever in Waterloo place in London there is a statue there of him facing the way the Luftwaffe would have attacked from.
Would love Sabaton to do a song one day of double VC winner Sir Charles Upham, now that would be an epic song

Hurricanes were MORE agile than both spitfire and Bf109. It was slower but the far out position of the control surfaces and tighter inboard position of the guns gave it a faster initial roll rate . It also could turn tighter than both at all speeds . It also had better elevator control so could change angle of attack better at speeds between 120 and 250 mph without issues . Something the spitfire and 109 couldn't claim . The 109 and spitfire both suffered from highly reactive pitch controls with violent elevator inputs either causing over compensation or stall over the pitch control surfaces.

If Sabaton wants to write a song about a fight from outside the country you should take a look at a Slovak national hero Milan Rastislav Štefánik., mostly known as a pilot, astronomer and most importantly a great diplomat. In 1915 he became an aviator in french army as he believed that defeat of Austria-Hungary was necessary for independence of Czechoslovakia. In paris he met with Edvard Beneš and reestablished contact with Masaryk and these three man together are the three main people behind the creation of Czechoslovakia. Štefánik was a key elemnt of this through his many diplomatic missions about which you can read on the internet. He was established the first minister of war but did not hold this title in the country he helped to create for long as on his way home on 4th May 1919 his plane crashed near Bratislava and he died. Pesonally I like his personal motto and think it would sound great in a song :"To believe, To love, To work", or if you want to Joakim with his great czech pronounciation can try say it even in Slovak ( Czech and Slovak labguage is like:" yes, you can copy my homework but change it a bit so that it doesn´t look the same."
