    Finally someone who understands the importance of "thinking ahead" and planning. Loved seeing that. Thats something that I guess people in general find boring. But in the long run it saves you SO much time and a lesson I would have needed when starting out as a beginner. Didnt know of that line addon. Quite useful actually. Thanks! Great video!

    Typing Alt+D R 60 directly in the viewport and then shift+R to repeat last action will allow to place instances faster

    excellent, i use this same method for wheel rims and tires can be done like this. But its easier to do a small flat section and then use a curve modifier to make it circular. Its basically princeaple of poly modeling

    If it does the job, then I guess it's fine. But I wouldn't use that shader:
    1. If there are circular grooves it's from wear and tear. Machining wise it would straight lines from the face milled part it came from, although a new car brake disc could have different machining which does leave circular groove - so check the reference.
    2. Grooves also tend to produce anisotropic reflections. For circular groves that would be basic radial tangent, and for straight lines that would be UV driven tangents (project view UVs should be good enough for the front and back), although you may want to use a dedicated UV channel for this.
    3. Wear and tear grooves might produce depths that might well be simulated with bumps. But for normally fine machining the surface roughness is so fine it should be driven with anisotropic shading alone, maybe with some randomness to the rotation.
    4. Bumps shown is doing a classic mistake. Leave strength to 1 and adjust the distance instead, even using a divide math node if necessary to see the low values, as these grooves would be less than 1mm in height (given a 0-1 input, which noise doesn't really do, but still). How to get the distance amount needed? Temporarily use microdisplacement instead in displacement only mode, whatever goes into Displacement Scale should be used for Bump Distance. Considering microdisplacement ground truth, this way is the only way to get the same normal modification. Lowering strength does "something", but doesn't produce the same result.
    Unrelated to the shader; the zebra stripes is a great matcap to check for flatness and curvature continuities, especially for those of us who don't subdiv everything we do. Doesn't apply to your machined (deburr) bevel here which would be circular, for bigger bevels superellipse 0.75 works much better. Zebra stripes are the only tool we have in Blender to show why the curvature is better, but look up videos on how to use curvature combs in Solidworks if this sounds a bit cryptic. It might also be something you'd choose to completely ignore.

    I like your way of making tutorials where you try to solve your problems like n gons in the video together with the audience. And do not Start with a done solution and just show how you do that. That way we can lern your thougth process how do you go about solving ngon problems and others.

    For this specific object you should have used curves... you can not only do automatic bevel but you can also keep everyting editable all the time... :)

    • @BlenderBob
      @BlenderBob  9 місяців тому

      Not really because I really wanted to control the amount of divisions for the corners and this way you can easily bevel many vertices at the same time and get the same radius. :-)

    • @rogper
      @rogper 9 місяців тому +1

      @@BlenderBob I'm not sure whe're on the same page, curves are ideal just for that... they allow to control the bevel, the amount of edges you want, the extrusion and specialy automatic holes... all permanently editable... only if I'm understanding this all wrong, but I can ensure you that I only use curves for decades for disc breaks And that you can do any wild disk design, with a million holes of any shape :) with custom bevels... I can show it to you tomorrow if you want.

    Is the array addon using instances so not adding geometry?
    The native blender array modifier adds geometry making the scene huge so if the addon doesnt thats also a big positive.

    • @BlenderBob

      It uses instances. I made a clip to show how to use the array modifier with instances. Check it out
