i find it so weird that grown ass people are bullying kids. obviously constructive criticism is important but bullying a kid for making a demon/vampire/werewolf hybrid or some other wild idea just makes them look boring and mean. if it's not harmful to anyone then don't yell at them, simple as that

Especially since that's normally how a lot of artists start out. The demon-angel-werewolf-dragon OC. Just let them do what they want, and along the way, they'll figure out that some of these things can't work together and work out those things, ultimately fixing their OC.

Exactly. I’d argue even when it **is** harmful, be gentle about criticism when the creator is a minor. If you bully them, they’re only gonna get defensive/double down on what they were doing and that won’t teach anyone anything. Harmful or not, kids don’t learn unless you actually teach them something. I thought that what obvious but apparently the art community also struggles to learn anything from their mistakes, since this culture of bullying minors isn’t new.

  • @PreciseSpace

I hate how normalized online bullying has become recently. Cringe culture was supposed to be dead but its been resurrected and lives amongst us once again. Im 20 now and have been drawing for a really long time, and I can't imagine how other people my age (or older) can justify this behavior. I know what my art looked like as a beginner, and I know all experienced artists know it too. Even when I was a teenager I don't remember such vile behavior happening so often, it seems even worse now. Why can't people ever learn to just, have a little compassion?

Empathy is becoming such a lost practice and it’s scary… I think because of all the horrible things going on in the world, some people have to take out their frustrations on an easy target. It’s harder to criticize corporations and societal norms than it is to go after a single person.
Of course that doesn’t give anyone the excuse, it’s just such a harrowing topic and I’m trying to wrap my head around how people enjoy belittling others for no reason.

@@lulub517 You're right. It'd be really interesting to see more people dissect this and try to find out why its become so common. Personally I think a big reason is that because of digital art and the internet, people are improving at art at a much faster rate. So when someone doesn't have much experience yet and their art is considered "bad", people who feel they have more art skill make fun of them bc it makes them feel high and mighty for not having "bad" art anymore. It really sucks and I'd love if people realized how bad its becoming

my little cousin likes to say that ‘little kids art is an artist’s canon event’. tbh its true lmfao
shes just learning to draw and although being 11, shes already getting super good at basic art knowledge like beginner anatomy, shading, and color theory. shes young, but obviously with more time she’ll develop. she’ll find her own artstyle, and use art as a means to express her thoughts.
what im saying is that stumping a young artist’s growth/development and being derogatory towards their work will make them feel shamed. youre not only judging one’s work, but their way of expressing creativity/thoughts. thats what art is. and trying to bring down younger/inexperienced artists with mocking and nitpicking at their work is disgusting. ACCEPT that all people start off somewhere. not EVERYONE’s work is going to be as skillful as someone who had been drawing for a while.
      tldr
not being good at art is okay. being young and inexperienced is okay. learn to praise these beginner artists for taking the time to learn difficult aspects of art and be accepting of their development, because we all start somewhere :)

The first time i was introduced to it was with Croaket when they were just sharing their art rendering process and liked to put the eyes higher up. People went to try to justify it by claiming they said slurs(these were proven to be faked screenshots), claimed they were racist(part of the slurs thing which was debunked), claimed they drew dsmp "corn"(proven to be false and was literally a troll mimicking their artstyle to make more fun of them), and whitewashing(was proven false and the only proof was a image the accusers edited to look like it was whitewashed when it wasnt). I wish people would stop before their actions effect someone who already isnt in a okay mental space and causes that person to end their own life over harassment.

Being rude to a minor artist won’t do any good and would just hurt them to the point where they might not want to work on art and they might never improve. So please, be nice to us. I genuinely HATE this artlore "trend". I feel sorry for beginners artists and younger people that have to deal with this level of scrutiny and toxicity from the community. I started off on DeviantART and I posted straight up cringe, and yet people were still supportive, and critiques were fair and expressed kindly. THIS is what a Community should be like. It's important for artists to make connections, to learn from one another.
On this note: it's not an artist's "canon event" to be bullied unmercifully to be able to "improve", it never has been. And for what? For being a bit cocky? Ooooh the HORROR. A kid/begginer having a bit of an EGO?? Absolutely despicable/s.
If you are contributing to art lore, you are indirectly saying to new artists in the community that bullying is A-OK if we deem your art bad enough. Already, many people expressed their fear of posting anything, scared they may be the next "art lore". How many others may completely give up drawing all together?
I thank the stars I wasn't a beginner artist during the tik tok era of social media, because the pressure just seems unbearable to me, I don't know if I would have continued to pursue art the way I did, if I were to find such a unwelcoming community.

If anything, a beginner artist’s “canon event” is being kinda bad at art for a while, making edgy oc’s, and just generally being “cringe”! And that’s something we should embrace! Like, I see beginners and go “wow, they have a long way to go but they sure are gonna be a good artist one day! Look at them go!” And I give a quite smile. I see myself in them.
On the bright side, I saw a “canon event” video about beginner artists that was something silly like, “when you see a beginner artist drawing the hands behind the back but you can’t stop it because it’s a canon event” and I laughed because I DEFINITELY did that lol.

  • @cardinalcat6435
    @cardinalcat6435 10 місяців тому +55

Stuff like Art Lore is precisely why I wasn't allowed to get social media until I was older, because my mom loved my work, and she knew I loved my work, but she was so worried about me posting my work and getting absolutely dogpiled and losing motivation to do what I loved because other people were mean about it. And I think it was genuinely one of the best things she's done for me, because if I posted my weird anime-knock off people who were ridiculously skinny and lanky with eyes that were too big and sat too low on the face, and then had thousands of people making fun of me, saying that my characters looked stupidly skinny and were terrible, then made their own drawings of my flaws exaggerated, I probably would have lost motivation to do art all together.
I distinctly remember when I was in like... middleschool I wanna say, I transitioned from drawing legs with straight lines to drawing them with the curves to show where the knee, thigh, and calf are. I was super proud of myself for picking up on this and excitedly showed it off. Now that I'm older and I know more about anatomy, I know that the drawings were not the best, the thighs were too long, the legs looked more like hour glasses than natural curves, the feet were pigeon footed and pointed inwards because I didn't know how to make them forward facing, I still drew heads as a circle but didn't know how to put the face in the proper spot so they looked like balloon heads.
If I shared that with some silly caption like "When you finally learn how to draw muscles" and then posted it today? There woulda been thousands of people making fun of how terrible my anatomy was, probably some Baloony from Phineas and Ferb reference, and all of the flaws would have been exaggerated to the point of unrecognizability. If I got that kinda response? I never would have shared my art again.
Everyone's art had an ugly duckling phase, and if it didn't have an ugly ducking phase it had a style change. Art grows with the artist, and stomping it out of teens is just gonna make it harder to find artists five, ten years down the line.

I no longer felt good about my art or my dreams and i stopped and entered a really bad mental space. Art was my release, without it i was lost and comfused and majorly depressed. I felt like a failure and lost my confidence and began isolating myself. I thought about ending it. It was my fiance and an amazing art teacher to encourage encourge me and now ive made a piece recently that ive only ever dreamt of achieving that skill level. It made me so happy and proud. I feel like i can finally reach my dreams, itfeels so close. But i wonder where i would be now had my family actually encouraged and supported me and if i never quit.
Bullying is never okay, even if you think its harmless, its not. That person youre laughing at, is still a person. With emotions. And it still hurts just as much when someone shits all over them. When i was a teen, i had a friend to whom i looked up to in relation to art. Their art was very pretty and i wanted to evolve like them. Problem was whenever i showed them art, they would only criticize (i don’t say bullying because it wasn’t like “ew” it was like oh thats impossible, thats incorrect, that color isn’t good, that isn’t good, etc.) and i started to just constantly doubt myself so i quite literally stopped drawing for years and if there ever was a point where i drew something i was embarrassed to show it to people or for people to see it. I only started drawing again once i cut that person out of my life (for various different toxic reasons) and i lost years that i could’ve used as practice. The point is, you can totally give pointers and critique art but being nice is such a great push and yeah whenever i see my old art when i was a kid, i cringe at it but i also look at it in awe as to how much i have evolved in general and how much I enjoyed drawing at that time. bullying young artists is unfortunately nothing new in the art community from the ye old days of deviantart rants and art cringe comps to now on tiktok
yet somehow this feels worse/ even scummier than those times to me and I think it's because at least then people knew they were being mean and didn't try to find any 'moral' excuses for being mean they just made fun of the art because they thought it was cringe, now people wanna justify themselves being shitty and dogpiling on young artists by trying 'find'/ make up excuses for them being shitty to literal children. I remember during the rendering process drama/trend- when ppl tried to justify their actions by claiming the artist was racist, homophobic, etc. spoiler alert: those claims were false.

I work with younger kids from 6-12! They can be very difficult. I handle them in Summer daycamp!
One particular girl looked up to me when she saw the way I drew, and I was honored (I’m an art student).
She started to draw and ask me to teach her. Was she obnoxious at times? Yes. Oh my word- yes. But what was I meant to expect? She’s a 10-12 year old girl who doesn’t know how to communicate. She’s in the process of maturing!
She liked to flaunt a lot and be like “I draw very good for my age 😌” and she would critique other kids who drew as well (it was critiques on how to draw in her style btw- they didn’t ask for it either).
I’ll be blunt when I say this: her art was cringe just like every beginner artists’ art starts out. We all need to start somewhere. However- even though both her behavior and art were difficult to swallow- I remember smiling at her and saying something along the lines of this: “well there’s always room for improvement! Even professionals keep on improving. It’s important to remember that. So honestly- there is no such thing as being “good for your age”. There isn’t really a standard- it’s something that develops! For example- my hands could improve- and a person younger than me could probably draw them more anatomically accurately than I can! Just like how I believe your eyes could could be more accurate, yanno? It also depends on the person and style. Everyone’s different! There is no such thing as a perfect artist! There is always room to improve!”
And because she was 10-12 of course she didn’t like being equal with people- she wanted to be better/the best. While that behavior is repulsive- I have to realize that it’s a part of maturing. It’s out of there control and only time and experience can change them. I need to be respectful to a child because my respect will be something they hopefully remember and learn from! :]

Other artists judging kids for making said art (the art which probably isn't as bad as they make it out to be) when those same artists know damn well they drew just like that when they were young is truly disheartening; it's disheartening to me and the entire MATURE side of the art community that knows it's just a bunch of kids drawing what they like.

same thing goes for kids wearing animal masks and jumping around pretending to be animals. like, don't tell me you didn't pretend that you're the cat in the "family" game, or that you were a mermaid or pirate or zombie or all these things you cannot be in reality. "they're humans, not animals!" and they know that. but let them live their life. when i was 7 i was acting like a cat meanwhile my brother was my caretaker and he'd pretend to make me food and then jump around with me until our parents told us to "stop acting like children". My own parents are literally the kind of people to not let kids be kids and that fucked me over so hard, i would run into my room and cry and punch myself and pull my hair, blaming myself for "being so dumb and weird", for being a kid, at 9 years old, i hated myself, and i'm still struggling with self-hatred after more than 7 years. Stop it. Stop this. Let kids be kids. Let them be weird. Let them be cringe. Let them live their childhood. Stop ruining it.

I’m a young artist, and people in my school are always say, ‘their the best at drawing’ to me. I personally hate this quote. I’m not better at ANYONE else at drawing. That’s because we all draw in our own styles, and some people just simply don’t like drawing. And when I see stuff online like, ‘I’m the best at drawing in my year’ videos, it’s disgusting. We all go at our own pace in our own styles, so ‘better’ is stupid. Have a great day y’all :)

I work with kids. I see a LOT of bad art that is earnestly given to me in excitement and pride. You know what I do when handed the ugliest, half traced, gallingly colored with whatever was on hand, disasters to ever be put on paper? I look at the kid, smile, say thank you, find at least one vague thing to compliment (I usually go for "I love the color choices!") and put it in a drawer that will be cleaned out after an appropriate amount of time has passed (and six new peices that have already buried it) Kid walks away happy, and starts a new drawing. If the kid gives me a lot of them, I might start gently giving suggestions for "something to try" to nudge them towards improvement without ruining their fun. But the only thing I lecture them on is proper hand stretches! I have gotten so many wonky drawings of Ice Spice, and I will have to find something positive to say about many more. If I can manage that, then there is no reason to feel so personally attacked by the mere existence of bad art in a space accessible to you.

There is no justifying being a bully. Constructive criticism is one thing but bullying is a totally different story; for example:
Constructive criticism: "Hey your drawing is looking good, but maybe try and draw the eyes a little closer next time, But for now very well done!"
Bullying: "bro, the eyes are like so astronomically far appart like they're practically on the sides of the head! You should just quit there is like no hope for you in art lol."
Hi, I'm a newer person that's joined the youtube art community recently. And in my opinion it's kind of scary seeing all this cyber-bullying going around, especially when I'm just dipping my toes into the online community. Newer and inexperienced artist are just trying to figure out what their doing, whether it be anatomy, their art-style, or just making random weird stuff for fun. I don't believe they should be bullied for just doing something they love. Unless the things their drawing is very problamatic and isn't just them making just mistakes, but even then they shouldn't be bullied but respectively corrected.
Thank you for making this video and bringing to light how problematic this situation is.❤

Art isn’t something you do to be good at. It’s something you do to have fun, and enjoy. And the fact that most people and ARTISTS THEMSELVES are not understanding that is ridiculously concerning. Some people think that having the courage to stand up to and bully somebody on the internet is bravery. It’s not. It’s merely a definition of stupidity.

I am very happy that your speaking out about this kind of behaviour. Just the other day I was in the store getting some food and I witnessed two full grown adults, one of them appearing way older then the other, arguing like kids about something that I couldn’t even understand. Neither of them were really handling the situation well and it baffles me that even people that have been on this earth several times longer then me can act so dumb and childish for no good reason in public. Kids have a right to act childish because, well, their children, as long as thier not being A-holes I can get past it. But fricking adults like 9 year olds both in public and online is just plain stupid, and I feel like there should be more resources in general to filter this kind of crap out of our lives. But hey, that’s just my though.

I vividly remember trying people who are my mom students at the time as anthropomorphic characters. As well as drawing two family friends who I thought were really cool, as anthropomorphic characters. I was really into wolves at the time, so that’s why I went that route. I’ll never forget the look that those people gave me or how bad they made me feel

Honestly what ticks me off the most is the ones respond to calling out this behavior with "kids shouldn't be on the internet" even when its a teen kid and not some kindergartner. Like, even if you ignore how completely impossible and UNREASONABLE (not to mention usually hypocritical) in this day and age that is, it reads a lot like them just figuring out that some of the people they bully are kids which makes them look worse than if they were bullying adults so they just make excuses about their treatment of the kid instead of addressing the fact they shouldn't treat anyone like that! Too often I've seen people confuse deconstructive criticism, and even just plain degrading bullying, with constructive criticism. Its like the bullies have figured out the "its just a joke" excuse doesn't work anymore so now they hide behind "constructive" criticism.
And a lot of it is just not letting a kid be proud of their progress, like every bully ever the put someone down because of a superiority complex.
