Pinoccio's Story is hauntingly beautiful without even knowing the full context in which it was performed live here: This was only a relatively short time after Kanye's mother, who he was very close with, had passed away due to complications after a plastic surgery procedure. Kanye blamed himself heavily for her death because she had a heart condition and a lot of doctors were unwilling to operate on her due to that complication risk, but Kayne made it happen for her anyway. With that knowledge, listening to this song always makes me cry because my mother means the world to me aswell.
the fact that your dad in "say you will"understood the outro and thought it was needed in the song is so nice to see. alot of people are ignorant and disregard it straight away. i know this is about to be such a good reaction.
Pinocchio Story is a live recording of a freestyle type song (I think in the graduation tour) right after his mother died, He wasn't going to add it to the album but Beyonce basically forced him to. The extra power of the song is the fact that the crowd isn't paying attention and just screaming whilst he explains the struggles that fame have brought. That is my favourite song on the album and one of my favourite Kanye songs even though its not something you can play all the time because of its emotional strength and raw exposure.
36:00 I can remember living in LA always listening to this song driving on Wilshire Blvd through Beverly & Westwood on my way home. This song is so nostalgic ❤️
Coldest Winter is a sample/interpolation of Memories Fade by Tears for Fears, proving that Kanye was there to reinvent the 80s well before the late 2010s/early 2020s trend of doing. Knowing that it's about his mom makes it so much sadder.
I think this is clearly the first album from Kanye where the notion of “every Kanye album is different” really dawns on a first listener such as the dad. Being a first listener and hearing the graduation trilogy, it’s harder to notice Kanye’s diversity yet. The first two were similar and graduation was obv different but it felt like a logical attempt of commercial music. It’s still noticeably different but it just sounded almost like Kanye adding more synths, dance, and catchy hooks to his already established style. His fourth album 808s hits a point where you really notice a left turn in his music. Then he keeps hitting left turns with musical direction and still makes quality everytime! After your finish his catalog, in hindsight you’ll look back and realize how insanely creative, diverse and versatile his discography is. There’s only 2 albums that sound similar in his 11 album run: TCD & LR.
i see where you’re coming from saying that the only albums that sound similar are LR and TCD, but i personally don’t think they sound very similar at all. TCD was very drum, bass and sample heavy whereas LR while also having great drum beats and samples, is extremely orchestral with horns and pianos and very heavy bass with more progression than TCD. can’t tell me any song on dropout sounds like we major or roses or touch the sky. while it might not be as experimental as his other projects, i wouldn’t say they sound similar
so basically what i’m saying is no matter what you’re getting a very different and unique experience no matter what u listen to from him. because although the college trilogy may be very similar at least in subject matter and vibe, like i said i don’t really think any of them sound the same
@@axelmartinez3540 different sound for sure, but similar to the level that you might expect an artist to progress. Even graduation somewhat fits that mold. After that it goes off the rails, lol
@@axelmartinez3540 they are both full of old school rap for the most part though. everything after sounds noticeably different. I definitely see the similarity between the two
I remember listening to welcome to heartbreak when I was homeless and would go and sleep at the Seattle art museum sculpture Park right across the way at the beach. On the sand during the winter. I would listen to that while I walk through Pike place market. 2015.
I’m 12 minutes in and I’m blown away by the way you guys describe the Art your hearing. Most reaction channels get caught in this weird place where it becomes to much of a grind and they loose that authenticity that made them so beloved. Never stop being yourselves because you guys are incredible.
man i love how you guys dont stop and pause the song constantly, that irritates me so much, like you guys fully listen, give little thoughts mid way and then speak on the whole thing when its finished.
This album is one I didn't pay too much attention to previously. Going back to it, it might just be his most influential to the hip hop landscape as a whole. In addition, I personally love most of the minimalist sounds on it, and think I gave it a hard time which it didn't deserve. Great album, and undoubtedly crucial to Kanyes discography!
When it came out I dismissed it as auto tune sellout music and I thought he was hopping on the auto tune t pain band wagon as t pain was so big at the time with auto tune. I think the timing of the use of auto tune was just unfortunate but I've grown to love this album.
glad your dad enjoyed the album, i had a feeling he wouldn't really enjoy it especially after graduation. can't wait to see what he thinks of mbdtf and especially yeezus
This is my personal all time favorite Kanye album. It's the one i remember the most when i was younger, and I was 9 years old when this album came out. I remember listening to it in the car with my sisters all winter of 2008-2009. Cold mornings on the way to school. This album just reminds me of winter weather alot (obvious why) and just has alot of nostalgia for me, and honestly whenever i listen to this album it brings me back to that time, and makes me sad. Also MBDTF next lets gooooooo
Paranoid does have an 80s feel to it but it's one of my favorite songs on the album. I can see why your father thought the song dragged out a bit lol Love this album & it's trippy to hear it now & to hear the influence & impact it has on today's music
A note on Cudi, famously did NOT use a lot of autotune -- that's more of a Kanye West thing. Cudi is a master of harmonizing, hooks, melodies, and humming (lol). Can't wait for y'all to eventually start reacting to some Kid Cudi! One of the most influential musicians of all time in his own right as well.
Great video! Idk who the best artist of all time is , but Kanye is my favorite artist of all time. For me, 808s is kinda like the beginning of the most interesting part of his arc as a person and artist. The college trilogy has alot of great songs but it's more exciting to me to hear his story evolve from 808s through Donda. For example ,his next album after 808s is My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy where he kinda gets lost in a celebrity fantasy world , Yeezus, he's totally lost in a character, Pablo he's switching back and forth, Ye, he's starting to figure out who he is, then JIK he rediscovers religion and Donda ends with him seemingly coming more to terms and accepting religion again and acknowledhing his mom etc. Will definitely be watching as you guys unravel the artist journey of Kanye.
say you will & coldest winter will forever have a special place in my heart. Not sure if your dad is a fan of tears for fears but Kanye actually sampled coldest winter from their song memories fade. :)
Honestly this album just hits different. The sounds were so far ahead of it's time when you think about it. Street Lights is one of his deepest tracks ever imo. That one is just art in it's purest form.
four tracks on this album were co-written by kid cudi, i think the way they both influenced and basically bounced from each other throughout their careers is just really cool, im excited to see some kid cudi on here, and hopefully kids see ghosts
I slept on this album for so long, honestly I used to talk junk about how it was wack and not hiphop. NOW I see the genius of this album. One of the greatest albums ever made I can cry to this album. If they released it today it would set the world ablaze no joke. There would be no post malone, weeknd, or Drake without this masterpiece. Pinocchio story is the greatest final track ever made.
When you’re talking about the lights on the road, I think of Camp by Childish Gambino “That Power” ….. “Your face is there and gone, there and gone as we pass under the orange lamps that line the side of the highway”… very visual. You should listen to Camp with your pops also
This is my favorite kanye album, only because I love the majority of songs on it and i love the futuristic/experimental sound of it and also probably because I was in my late teens and this was peak for me sonically lol. Just such a phenomenal album, period. Also, Kanye is a genius and they've tried to make him out yo be "crazy" but I think they're just trying to silence him at this point. The media is the enemy, period. ❤❤ Also Street Lights is one of my favorites I'm so glad y'all enjoyed it. Xo
Great video guys. Just a comment, and maybe you guys talk about this in other videos, but the nickname “808” for drums comes from the fact that they’re created by a Roland TR-808 drum machine, so they’re literally always synthetic.
I almost was a offended when your dad said he disliked Lil Wayne's verse but after he explained why. I got it, Wayne was a little underwelming here because he chose to match Kanyes energy rather than going his own way which is what he usually does so I definitely get it lol.
