    That's a beautiful Chess Board. I especially liked the Ammonia tent trick to darken the Oak - a new one on me after over 40 years in the wood trades. I no longer have all the machinery because I've gone over almost all hand tool woodworking but I may well have a go at this project over the winter. As for Jason's hatred of doing mitres, same here!

    Surprised that Jason didn't use the Veritas 4-Way Speed Clamp that Axminster sell to clamp the frame pieces. A great bit of kit, I bought one for my dad some time ago and he loved it.

    😂Glad to see after years of asking for a chess board/pieces course you’ve come up with this Jason. Thank you. Ammonia trick amazing.

    I am impressed. Finally a YT-woodworker who actually knows how to use his tools. One question, as a chess player, why did you make the board 35mm thick? Not really practical to move around. Pretty looking board though as a display piece. Or a thick cutting board in my kitchen :).

    Beautiful project, and I love the craftsmanship! Your choice of wood, contrasting colors and details is lovely. The finish is soft and luxurious. Yes it’s beefy, but I would love to play a game on it.

    Great video Jason!
    I built a Chess board for my son a few years ago. I built mine on top of a base which had 2 drawers, one for each color of hand made chess pieces and opened from opposite sides of the board. My board was made of Maple and walnut. One difference in my construction was to include a strip of purple heart (regret wood choice as purple heart fades with uv light and is no longer purple in color) That strip surrounded each square and helped to mask any VERY slight error of the squares aliging, which the eye can detect! Easy to incorperate, during glue up add a strip to each section. cut as described, add another strip on the 2nd glue up .

    This is an amazing coincidence as last week I decided to make a chess board for my daughter who has expressed an interest in the game. I've made the 3D design and purchased the wood, so very excited to watch this and pick up some tips

    Nice board, Jason. In the USA we call them C clamps but G clamps really does seem ore appropriate.

    Well presented video. Clear, slow enough for a viewer to take in various stages. Clear diction. Sadly the finished product was pretty impractical for a chess board. It’s far to thick & heavy. More suited to a butchers chopping board. Now let us see a craftsman make a board 6mm thick with a hinged centre.

    • @axminster
      @axminster  Рік тому

      Hi there, yes this could easily be made as a chopping board. Why not have a go at adapting this project to make it thinner. And a hinge is a great idea.

      I play chess and would love to have this board. It’s not meant to be carried around but to say it’s impractical for playing chess is nonsense.

      is this not gonna experience warp? why not use plywood as the body to avoid wood movement?

    One more time please, I did not get this. What type of liquid was used for make oak wood darker?

    • @axminster
      @axminster  3 місяці тому

      Hi there, Jason used ammonia to make the oak darker in colour and to bring out the grain. This is a naturally occurring substance that gives off strong fumes (please use carefully and in a well ventilated area taking proper precautions to protect yourself). The ammonium hydroxide reacts with the tannins in the oak, which makes it darker in colour. It's a process known as ammonia fuming resulting in fumed oak. Hope this helps.
