- It's the week before Christmas and there's lots to get done around our farm. Not everything is going to plan but excitement is certainly in the air as we let the piglets out into their paddock and work to pull things together before Christmas arrives.

We are a couple who are building our own home from the ground up in the mountains of West Virginia. After living near the city our entire lives we finally decided to sell it all, pack up our 3 kids and live in an RV on our 73 acres while building our own debt free, off-grid house and learning to live a more self-reliant life.

It is great that your kids know where their food comes from and understand what is involved.
It's also good to note that their livestock are raised and grown in very humane and pleasant conditions. This is is stark contrast of the way grocery store livestock is raised.
When Josh hurt himself, it was really great to see Carter and the other one stepping up to help fill his shoes. What great children . We raised our three sons in the same manner on a working farm, and now my oldest and youngest run are automotive repair shop, and our middle son is a high school English teacher. They know what work is.

Years ago my wife and I were picking up hay from a local farm.The young daughter of the farmer wanted to show my wife the new piglets , when my wife saw them she told the daughter wow how cute .In which she said , they're not cute they're tasty 😂
Luv you guys... "Today they're cute little piglets, tomorrow they're sausage." So down to earth. The people that complain about that think that food comes from grocery stores, or restaurants. LOL I've smiled through this entire episode. Merry Christmas!
Farm families have such a down to earth understanding of life, "food shelter and clothing" living close to the land. Wild Wonderful, building their house, raising their food producing their own energy. Thank you for helping to educate those of us who purchase our meat in packages. (Ellie where does bacon come from? Love that scene)
My wife’s dad was a pig farmer. He always told his eight kids, "if you want to name them, go ahead, but you better name them breakfast lunch and dinner". Merry Christmas!

If people had to slaughter and gutt the animals they consume we would be eating much less meat.
For many people burgers, sausages, hot dogs, bacon, nuggets pretty much grow on supermarket stalls, or at the takeaway.
I don't buy meat very often, as I don't enjoy the taste. Even as a child, I hesitated eating meats. I do, however, eat meat when I am a guest and also when I am out to dinner. I enjoy veggies much more. To each his own.
You can tell all the animals are happy and living a good life. Leon, Frank, and all the farm animals.
It's awesome that your kids know the circle of life. The family gives a great existence/home to cherished and respected farm animals, and the kids know that the animals become nourishment later before the animals get too old/sick.

I am 100% with you about the importance of knowing where your food comes from! I am so disappointed in those whole think you should get your food from the store. You are blessed with knowing exactly how your meat is raised and how happy they lived to help you live.

If I had any young couple ask me about how to live a wonderful family life; I would tell them to watch your channel and to pay attention to how you treat each other with love and playfulness. You all are doing family like family is supposed to be done.

My heart bleeds when seeing the family "working" together with all the animals, so peaceful!!! I wish I could stay there for a holiday, but we are in NL into a quite restricting lockdown, however we will make the best of it. Merry Christmas to you all.

Kudos to raising your own food! When I was growing up, my grandparents and uncles went wild boar hunting, deer hunting and we all went fishing. My grandparents and uncle shared a big hog every year. The “garlic” is beautiful. I love when my little one says his words wrong, like for tomorrow night he says yesternight 😂 I refuse to correct him because it’s just so adorable.
We name our pigs and chickens and spoil them until they have their only bad day, imo raising them like that is 100 times better than how the animals are treated that get processed for grocery stores. Also I never realized until we grew our own pigs out that pork is not supposed to be white meat and the pigs we grew out looked like beef so I will never buy pork from the grocery store again.

Had it not been for Covid there is a good chance I would not have found your channel. When my company had me start working from home in May 2020 most of the aircraft I manage the maintenance on were all parked in storage but I still had a small fleet to manage. I did a lot of training during that time but I also looked for off grid living which is how I came across your channel. I had to binge watch a bunch of your videos before I caught up but I was hooked to see the progress you guys made. I can honestly say if I had a bad day all it takes is seeing that you have a new video posted and my bad day is quickly forgotten. You guys exemplify the meaning of a wonderful family. Poor ole Leon looks like he is having separation anxiety .....he's used to having full run and now he is contained a bit. He will get used to things.......I just love him! He's the cuttest, well all the animals are.

Wow. More animals to care after...not just a hobby farm. Definitely cuts into TV time. ;) I grew up on a farm and don't remember ever sitting on the couch or watching TV. Its a lifestyle not for the faint of heart. Just because the house is almost finished, always more projects to complete. Gets easier when the kids are older but harder when they leave. ;)

The life lessons your kids are getting are invaluable, and a rare gift. But reading, writing and arithmetic are important too. And history, literature, art, biology, physics, chemistry, civics (aka government,) world religions, music, geology - there's a lot to know.
Are you home schooling? You already do so, so much with building, cooking, gardening and tending to the livestock.... If you are handling the schooling too, I am impressed even beyond the high level I already had.
I'm so proud of you and your family! Keep raising them right! My sister always named her pigs Ham and Bacon over and over again to keep reminding her of what they were raising them for. lol. Merry Christmas from Texas!
