I live in Elk Grove, CA and live next to a bike trail. The bike trail is popular with walkers, runners and bikers alike. I met a couple (60's) a couple of years ago and through conversation told them about my WFPB lifestyle. Last fall, the husband had a heart attack and told me about the procedures he had. I asked if his medical team suggested a change in his diet and he told me "no." I suggested he look into what programs were available through his insurance plan. He's in a supervised program for cardiac rehab and they are now WFPB!!! The wife is enrolled in Forks Over Knives cooking classes and have read books on reversing heart disease. They made my day ~ you never know who you will influence and when. We cannot change anyone, but we can influence those who are ready. Thanks for a fantastic conversation.

@@Chris-kr7gg We eat primarily the McDougall way. If you have health issues, consider the 12 day intensive that McDougall offers. It isn’t cheap but I gave it to my husband as a Christmas present. Beyond the information which was great, the individual care is wonderful. The path we were on, paleo and medication were not helping. Had I known about the Ornish program, I would have compared it to see which is a better fit. Using the Esselstyn and McDougall program, my husband lost 75 pounds, tests results show his arteries are great, off a lot of meds. He still takes some. I am not sure which, but lower. We keep our meals simple but I cook something nice a few times a week. We eat differently for breakfast and lunch. But eat together and the same meal for dinner. Since you are male, I will share what my hubby eats. He eats potatoes for breakfast (hash browns on our griddler) and veggies with salsa or ketchup. Half the plate is veggies. For lunch he will have leftovers from our dinner or he will air fry some previously cooked potatoes and half the plate veggies. Usually he will have BBQ sauce on the side. Dinner is pasta with lentil and marinara sauce, rich in veggies with a side of veggies. Or a split pea soup, again lots of veggies. Or a nourish bowl rice and beans and veggies. Or any new recipe I try. He also loves corn on the cob. He does eat fruit but not a lot. We usually have pancakes or waffles on Sundays and we defrost a big bowl of blueberries.
      I hope that helps.

    Two observations:
1 - Dean Ornish says he is worried about our democracy, it keeps him up at night. (I would say that this quote illustrates the problems we are facing today on many levels.)
2 - McDougall often claims that all large SUCCESFULL societies in the past got their bulk of calories from starch.
Now, I think it's too simple to claim that all of our problems could be solved by a starch based diet but what if you turn it around? And claim that any society that moves away from starch is doomed to fail...? Could that be true? It would be interesting to see if there's data too support this argument.

I want to be very respectful when I say this; I'm in no way trying to be disrespectful toward Dr. Ornish. He's one of the greats in the plant-based/nutrition movement, no doubt. But out of all the iconic top-notch plant-based medical doctors out there, I've always wondered why Dr. Ornish is overweight. I don't get it. Look at Dr. Esselstyn: He's super lean, and he's much older than Dr. Ornish. In fact, Dr. Esselstyn's wife is also nice and skinny. Same with Dr. McDougall, look how nice and thin he is, along with his wife, Mary. Dr. Michael Klaper, also nice and thin. Dr. Michael Greger, same thing. But Dr. Ornish is pudgy, yet I've always assumed he was also a strict whole-foods, plant-based eater. But maybe not? Anyhow, just an observation. Again, no disrespect to him whatsoever.

He's frustrated Marie - understandably. There are many people in the US who may well be condemning our children and grandchildren to hardship and disease, because they're (knowing or not) very narcissistic and self-serving, which blocks considered change.
The government yes aren't there to order, but they could have done an awful lot to help in the meantime. But instead they have taken the lobbying money, time after time, of animal agribusiness. The Founding Fathers, properly educated, would have been disgusted at what happened in generations to come.

They should keep the sex subject separate. Maybe the doctor is a sex addict or trying to sell his ideas by enticing them with getting better "sex" results. It's so annoying, I cant have my kids listen to this!!
