Mykal was a founding member when Geoff, Layne, Earl and Mykal were known as 4 The Love. After they added Scott Porter they became 4:2: Five. Then when they went on The Sing-Off they became VoicePlay.

You’re right about the lyrics in this song - some of the very best writing! And I truly appreciate VoicePlay’s crisp diction here. Not just in giving us the best chance to understand every word, but it also infuses Scar’s personality from the animated film. Although we do not get Jeremy Iron’s accent, Geoff really gives us the feeling of Scar’s precise choice of words and even a slight ‘posh’ feel - although I couldn’t tell you how, as he doesn’t seem to have changed his own accent. Perhaps it is that very sharp enunciation? But also perhaps I’m influenced by his very controlled, teeth bared, visual mouth movements, even though those are not part of the actual sound. There are times I could practically swear he has fangs - at least virtual fangs showing in the way he shows his teeth. He is positively leonine!

Layne came up with the rap bit as a compromise between breaking up the flow of the song by including the prose from the movie, versus leaving out the hyenas' dialogue entirely. 'Mufasa, Mufasa, Mufasa' and 'No King, no King, la-la-la-la-la-la!' are of course taken directly from the animated feature.

For more fun, you need to watch it again with the captions on and see the joke Geoff put in. During the lion roar he does near the end.
We will hear more of the voice of Mykal(Michael) later this autumn. They've made another video where he gets to shine even more. Here Scar had the most lines, out of necessity. Mykal was tenor 1, when Earl was tenor 2, he can get up there! You hear some of it in Just Sing.
Layne wrote the rap to avoid some of the spoken lines, but still explain the ongoing action. Seems some people complained about the spoken part in Hellfire and he wanted to try another solution.

I enjoyed the spoken part of Hellfire but I also enjoyed what they did with this one. Maybe I'm just easy to please.

Geoff does a magnificent villain. Mykal (Michael) was an original member before leaving to go to Broadway. Look on Just Sing (with captions) and you'll get to see their claims to fame for all of the people that have had parts in the joy of VoicePlay. Geoff's solo is Song of Durin.

Not only he's the best Disney villain (this one and Frolo,), but also the best villainess (Ursula), the best princess (We don't talk about Bruno), the best badass (Seven Nation Army)... Should I go on? Nah, he's simply the best. Period. Cesar is absolutely loveable, Eli is perfect, Layne is incredible, Mykal is not from Earth, that's for sure. Thanks for the reaction, as always.

Jeremy Irons played Scar in the movie, but he didn't sing this, it was Jim Cummings. I believe Irons had some vocal cords issue while singing it, so his version was replaced.
Mykal (pronounced like Michael) was a VP original member in 1997, with Geoff, Layne and Earl, as 4theLove; they changed to 4:2:five when Scott Porter joined, and later to VoicePlay around the time of the Sing-Off.

Jeremy Irons sung up to "You Won't Get A Sniff Without Me!" and blew his voice out, so then Jim Cummings did the rest of the song. You can hear the difference between their voices after that part.

I loved how they did this one 😁
me personally I hated the live action lion king and I think they messed up scars song so badly in it , I only watched it once and never will again
Voiceplay did a great job though , plus Geoff did a awesome job acting as scar 😁 I also loved Caesar’s acting in this 🥰

I really enjoyed your reaction- thanks! Mykal (Michael) was a member of the quartet, '4theLove', they formed back in high school. Mykal left the group to pursue Broadway and has had a very successful career on Broadway. Scott Porter joined as their beatboxer and they evolved into '4:2:five', Scott Porter left for Hollywood to pursue his acting career, then the group became Voice Play around 2012 with Layne as their beatboxer. Voice Play will have another one coming out soon featuring Mikal.

they don’t need a comparison because Voiceplay always make a song their own. ❤

I agree but comparing Voiceplay covers to the original just gives me a point of reference for what to expect or look for.

7:31 that is sorta what the hyenas say in the original. Not word for word but it's just made less goofy.

Fun fact, since you mentioned enjoying the double meaning of "pride" in the beginning: "teeth and ambitions are bared" is an example of one of my favorite types of wordplay, and there's actually a name for it! A zeugma is a grammatical construction in which a word (often a verb but not always) is said only once but used in two or more different senses. Every time I find a new one my silly lil writing nerd heart gets all squishy 😁

As a viewer of those reacting to VoicePlay or solo Geoff, I'm not looking to hear which is better (the original or their cover). I just want a valid reaction as to whether is was good or not.

Same here. I don't compare either. Usually.
I did with Song of Durin because I also love Clamavi De Profundus and that's where Geoff got his inspiration for the way he did the song and video. And it turned out absolutely gorgeous. His best video so far.

I understand that. I've gotten accustomed to tossing my 2 cents in when comparing the original to the covers but usually don't give my preference until the end. That way if it's not something you're interested in, you can click away without missing anything.

Geoff in all honesty for me is the official disney villain of the acapella world. but thats just my opinion :)

The song itself (or the movie for that matter) never impressed me overall, perhaps because I was an adult when it came out, so I was looking at it with a more critical eye; but I will admit that "matter of pride" is a reasonably good line. VoicePlay's arrangement and performance are, predictably, great.
As far as the most dastardly Disney villain, I'm tempted to give that to the lady whose life goal is to skin puppies, just because children love them. Or the guy who was willing to burn down all of Paris because he saw a pretty girl. (I'm categorically disqualifying villains from anything that wasn't made by Disney at the time, even if Disney bought the rights to it later. Otherwise you'd have all sorts in the mix, like Emperor Palpatine, Hans Gruber, Salim Abu Aziz, the creeps from Alien Resurrection who wanted to use abducted humans as hosts to breed a bunch of chest-burster aliens, the evil spirit of the-environment-must-be-destroyed-at-all-costs from Fern Gully, and the list just goes on.)

No, the hyena bit is not in the live action version. Also, you missed nothing not watching it. LOL. It was underwhelming.

Greetings! First of all, "The Lion King" (animated, I never watched the life action version) is one of my favorite Disney Movies, too. It's one of the last "2D" movies for me without all the 3D CGI stuff Disney does today.
Not everything is bad about that, but I have a "special relationship" to the old handmade Disney movies: My father was a great graphic artist and he had a job offer from the Walt Disney Company in the late 70s to work in Carl Barks team in Anaheim. But he didn't sign the contract, because 1)I was just a toddler and 2)in the 70s the world felt "bigger" than today. Flying on an airplane wasn't a usual way to travel, also the US seem to be a complete "other world" from a German's pov. In retrospect, perhaps I would have become a Californian Sunnyboy with Bermudas and a surfboard, but... Don't challenge decisions that were made in the past. Just keep them in mind for decision that lie ahead of you.😊
BTT (and sorry for the excurse): I also do like the way VP chose the costumes. They look a bit like a "Street Gang" or an Bad A..s MC , especially Geoff as the "president" 😄
Oh, and thank you! I learned some linguistic knowledge from you. I never thought about multiple meanings of "pride" in English (as a native German speaker, I'm not that deep into the English language). I only knew pride in the "self-esteem" or hubris meaning, but not the "pack" (in the sense of "the pride of lions") meaning.💡

Wow that's an incredible story about your father and what might have been. No need to apologize, I enjoyed reading it. As a southerner in the U.S. we are often teased about our vocabulary and way of speaking, so I'm not sure I'm the best grammar teacher but I'm very happy I could be of some service. I've always wanted to learn a second language but after a couple years of studying Spanish, I don't think I have much of a knack for it myself. Thanks for watching!
