Gregg Allman (and Redd Foxx) on Letterman, November 18, 1987

  • Gregg performs "I'm No Angel" as Sid Mcginnis makes perhaps his only mistake in his 31-year run on Dave's shows, starting the song a half step higher but correcting himself as soon as Will Lee and Gregg come in.
In the next segment, Gregg begins to chat with Dave but is interrupted by a "surprise" walk-on by Redd Foxx.
Redd Foxx was the last of several other "surprise" walk-ons throughout the show's hour: Christopher Reeve, Willard Scott, Susan Saint James, Peter Allen, and a joke walk-in by Biff Henderson.
Gregg had sat in with the band, and he was keenly aware of that night's "surprise walk-on" theme, so he was fully prepared for Foxx's spot.
I uploaded another Gregg Allman appearance on Letterman, which includes two music performances and one full interview, here: • Gregg Allman on Letter...

Ran into Greg in Macon, Ga at a convenient store off exit 6. Amazingly, no one else was there except for a couple of Huddle House customers. Greg was filling his Harley and was saying he needed to ride with me as a joke because I bought a 12 pack. I walked over to the pump and shook his hand. I never acknowledged that he was a superstar and after a couple of laughs we went separate ways. Just a humble and kind man that was larger than life who felt like a friend to everyone.

I cried for 3 days when he passed. Still crying today over Dicky passing a few days ago. Greg Almond was the most soulful white boy to ever sing a note!! Almond Brothers is and always will be my most favorite band and Greg, is my most favorite male vocals of this entire life time. R. I. P. Gregg! I know your brother was waiting for long time to see you again and, well Dicky just had to join. Guess he knew y'all would be Heaven's house band and just couldn't let the show go on without him. I love you all 3 soooo much and can't wait to hear y'all when I get in!!!

Was fortunate enough to see Gregg Allman and Friends at the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach around 1999-2000. God had to have been the Blessing behind it because my Army buddy flew in from California and I told him and my wife at the time that we were going to take the camper and go to the beach. Well that Saturday I said "let's see who is playing at the House of Blue". Low and behold it was Gregg and Friends. What a concert and what a Blessing it was.
