Hey Eli, thanks for this great video! The Flash-Photography is still alive!! Here in Germany (almost) all photographers prefer available light, I think.
Very wild coincidence im flying to McAllen tomorrow for the first time to visit a girl who coincidentally models and so iv been looking more into photography then just now your video is featured on my feed and iv never seen your channel before. I usually do video i have an FX30 and just got and FX6 but in re to photo you answered some questions i had about shutter speed. Love the content liked and subbed 👍
Awesome! Awesome photos! Love you work bro... I have a question what meter do you use in your camera? For dramatic shots or you just eyeball it? Thanks man
First time seeing your channel. You Sir have great content! For someone that just got into off camera flash for portraits these kind of videos are gems. Thank you for taking the time to make this. Just earned yourself a new subscriber 👌✌️📸
Hey are you guys getting affected from the Canadian wildfires? You got out of jersey city at the right time! I know the day you shot here it was a bit overcast, however I think maybe two or three days since then we’ve had a blue sky. Curious to know if Texas is suffering from hazy skies, pretty much daily. Outdoor shots here have been pretty bad so have been resorting to mimicking the sun using gels.
Great photos , u didn’t talk about flash power , what did you use , u could have add more power with low iso ? I am looking to buy my first strobe, Is 400w power enough for hss portrait on sunny day Thanks
Great video Eli, I prefer the shot taken with the 24-70mm. I need to practice more on these type of shots, I’m never sure on power of flash when using HSS.
As I mentioned, you usually need higher power outputs if you notice your ambient exposure shutter speed is high. There are many factors, though, such as modifier distance and modifier choice.
I followed you on Instagram, but this is the first time I'm watching your UA-cam channel. Nice work! Of the two portraits, I would personally prefer the second shot with the 85mm. Reason being that for the first shot, I prefer to put the sun behind the model so that it lights up her hair with the strobe on the model. The second shot to me looks more natural, has more character. One question that I have is, typically how many stops darker would you expose the background compared to the subject?
Hello Eli, Thank You for the video. Really helpful. Quick Question: Do you prefer shooting with silver interior or white interior for the beauty dish? Which one is better in most of the outdoor lighting conditions? Thank You. :)
Hey Eli, thanks for the content and the time to create it. I'm not a huge fan of flash, using mostly continuos light, or natural lights to get my shots (and also don't understand much about flash). But, something in your photos caught my attention: That yellow "glowy" look on the model skin. It was made by the use of flash? Or it was just post production? I think that color super pretty, and hard to get on post. Keep the good work!
I'm a bad follower and didnt wait to the end of your content...It was not flash, just the color grading at the post LOL. Your content is even better going from setup to post... Cheers mate!
Eli, have you ever considered shooting at a narrow DOF outside like 5.6 or F8? When shooting at a beach or open field, I believe that sharp look is more pleasing to me when I’m not worried about distracting backgrounds.
Can you (or anyone) confirm this?: at 4:15 you mention that the faster your shutter speed, the more power you'll need out of your flash. Logically, this is not supposed to be true because no matter how long the shutter curtain exposes the sensor, all of the flash light is captured. (As opposed to iso and lens aperture). This would be true if you include ambient light in the calculation, but if you make a test in a dark room, faster shutter speeds will not require higher flash power
"The faster the shutter speed, the more power you will need in your strobe" 4:12 I think you are wrong. Shutter speed doesnt affect flash power in any way. Flash power need to be adjusted if we change aperature or iso. Correct me if I am wrong! Thank you, and nice portraits!
I just wanted to let you know that you misunderstood what I said. Based on the settings I was using for my scene, I already knew my power would be high. You're right about shutter speed not affecting flash power, but that's not what I said.
@@EliInfante I apreciate your reply. I didnt mean anything wrong, other to correct you , but I accept that I misunderstood it! So i honestly apologize and thank you once again for replying!
I have been watching you from Nigeria, I love your teaching My problem is I don't have all this equipment to start, all I have is canon 6d with 28-125mm lens 😭
Prefer the 85mm because it looks more natural and the lighting is balanced better. Pet peeve is when the strobe doesn't look integrated into the scene properly.
85 shot is better, but not because the improved bokeh. It’s because the photo wasn’t so flash heavy and had a more natural look compared to the 24-70 shot.
The 35mm is a master's lens. I can't explain it any other way. The 24-70 takes a master to actually make it great, but it's a tad below average in the average person's hands. The more you take in, the more you will find these statements to be extremely true.
