I grew up foraging berries with my Cherokee mother. She made elderberry jelly which I never liked. When I learned how high in vitamin C it was, I foraged some by the side of a country road and went home and made a tincture. Wow! It’s better than the expensive hard bitter supplement I was trying to choke down every day -I had chronic sinus problems and the tincture fixed that! 👍🏼

About a year and a half ago we made some Elderberry Syrup (Elderberry, honey, clove, ginger). I diluted it down to a specific gravity of about 1.100, added yeast, and turned it into wine. After bottling it, we stored it in a nice dark place and forgot about it until about a month ago. Absolutely the best wine we've ever made. Full bodied, fantastic flavor. We're down to one bottle and I'm regretting not having started another batch or two.

Elderberry is true medicine. Great stuff. I personally feel the flower tincture is stronger than berry syrup though. However the syrup is plenty effective. Very interesting. Here in British Columbia we have a wild elderberry, a red one, which is poisonous if eaten raw. To use this one, I would have to learn to cook them. Probably much safer for me to get some American ones.
