Oliver Harper do you create the trailers that are shown at the beginning and end of all your retrospectives? If so, great work. Your videos are great in general but you have a real talent for editing. You could probably have a successful career in Hollywood editing trailers.

I was on the set of this film in Orlando, Florida when I was a kid---then seen it opening night in 3-D at the Odeon here in Saskatoon, Canada---no matter how bad some people say the movie was: It was a magical, memorable experience that I will never forget and always cherish...

I haven't seen it since the 80's, but I must've watched that movie a dozen times as a kid. It's a fun aquatic horror movie. Anyone looking for sophistication or mind-expansion is barking up the wrong tree. 😂🤷‍♂️

Problem with the film is its a sequel to one of the greatest films of all time. Its not just a sequel its the second sequel to one of the best films ever that never needed a sequel. Jaws 2 works mostly because it plays itself as slasher film but having Chief Brody character in the lead helps that one carry itself. Jaws 2 is a good solid film despite the fact it didnt need to be made. Jaws 3 you are already pushing the fact the first didnt need a sequel let alone 2 sequels. Add that plus the how weak some of the 3d effects look in 2d along with mostly weak characters an the same shark blows up ending an you get weak film. If you can except Jaws 3 for what it is though a cheesy 8os B movie an not something on the standard of the first then its ok movie. The goofy 3d shots in 2d add while some still looking little bad do add to the cheesy B movie 8os feel. Making the film ok watch in the long line of silly 8os films.

I saw it twice when it came out in 1983! I went with a bunch of cousins in Moose Jaw, SK and had a great time! I was 15 and didn't expect too much but it was great seeing it in the old downtown theatre in Moose Jaw.

+Oliver Harper I agree with Callum, I thought this was an informed, concise and enjoyable look at a film which certainly suffered a troubled production. It's a shame Laurent Bouzereau (who did the making of Jaws and Jaws 2 features on their respective DVDs) didn't do one for this film as what happened backstage is often more interesting than the final product on film. Whilst it's not as technically accomplished as Jaws 2, I prefer watching this film as it has a happy-go-lucky quality that Jaws 2 doesn't have. Also I prefer the characters in this film, particularly the lead quartet of Quaid, Armstrong, Putch and Thompson, whilst the teens in Jaws 2 seemed disposable and not very well developed.

Oliver Harper I disagree with this review. I like "Jaws 3D". I know it's not the first "Jaws" movie. The first "Jaws" is the best one of course but I thought "Jaws 3D" was good. Yes "Jaws 3D" has it's flaws. There are some things they could have done better but I think this movie was good. I like the actors in this movie. It's definitely better than "Jaws The Revenge".

Oliver, your reviews are always first rate, fair, and wonderfully edited. This is one of your most informative, and you did a terrific job. My first job was working at the movies, and I remember horror stories from my boss when he ran 3-D in the early 80s (not this film, though), and hats off to you for the examples you showed here of how the technology works, something I've been curious about for some time.
This is an absolutely first rate job, sir, and you have my favorite UA-cam channel.
This is one movie I've been fascinated with since I was a kid, God knows why. I got a 3-D copy of this film last year in the anaglyph format and, while it looks ok, it does indeed cause a headache the size of the Death Star, but it is fun to finally see it in 3-D(ish).
    Cheers, Oliver.

Jaws 3D was my favourite Jaws Movie way back when I was a kid and they first showed it on terrestrial television. I was only a kid at the time so I was sucked in by the water park and the exploding shark at the end . I don’t think I ever saw it in proper 3D despite this being its major selling point. Now I’m 41 I have come to my senses and the first JAWS movie is obviously my favourite. I think I actually like Jaws 4 (The Revenge,) better than 3 now.

Eric Genest to be honest I love all four as well. It’s a very strange thing but every time they try to make a new shark 🦈 movie and promote it by saying it’s better than JAWS, it’s never been anything like true. I think it’s probably got something to do with them not taking it seriously anymore. With all the JAWS movies , the shark 🦈 and the scares are treated with total seriousness and a straight face.

      @mr.c2569 10 років тому +3

I see it as best by the most superficial perspective as possible. It's certainly the best of the series since all the rest of the sequels have been trash. But I personally don't think that jaws 2 was any better since it's very distant from Spielberg's cleverness because the film shows the shark awfully a lot which takes away terror or suspense. And for the most part, the shark looked pretty fake but it only proceeds to gets worse in 3-d and revenge.

    • @Hewylewis

Hewylewis that's what the director Schwartz said in a interview. Well first of all I think it's because it takes away suspense or terror. One of the problems I had with Jaws 2 is that it failed to even scare me.

@@mr.c2569 I get where you are coming from, but the director of JAWS 2 brought up a great point on why he showed the shark so much. He said you aren't going to top the first one in terms of that. He's right. I actually love JAWS 2, mostly for nostalgia, but if they had used the screenplay that the awesome novel is from, the movie would have been far better. Still not the level of the first one though...

Funny how when I was a kid, I liked Jaws the Revenge. But then going back and watching it today, it's like "WTF is this garbage?" But after reading online, I realized the movie was made stupid on purpose. A roaring shark? Really? Yeah that really was purely for entertainment. And apparently in new releases, someone actually bothered to edit it so that the shark explodes after that horrible stab scene. Yeah, that movie was made as a joke and for that, I actually find it really funny and entertaining.
Jaws 3 on the other hand... so boring and awful. I see where it had potential to actually be interesting but the effects make it just plain awful.
The original cannot be topped by the way. The story Quint tells is just so good. I agree that Jaws 2 was good for a slasher film but the original is just perfect.

In some ways, "Deep Blue Sea" felt a lot like a take on Jaws 3-D... At least as far as the underwater action, sharks crashing through glass, etc.
I'd be happy if they would just FINISH the movie. From what I've researched, the executive producer cut off the money before the effects were completed. Thus some of the awful shots. I'm not a fan of special editions, typically, but part of me would LOVE to see a "Jaws 3-D: Special Edition" with updated effects.

Thank you so much for this review! I am one of the people who genuinely love this film. (go ahead, laugh, it's ok. really.) Allow me to explain: My family had recently visited SeaWorld on vacation when I encountered this film, in its initial 3-D theatrical release, at around five years of age and it made quite an impression. This movie is one of the most memorable theater experiences of my youth, in the company of Ghostbusters and the Star Wars movies. As an adult, the film's many flaws are overt, but the nostalgia and feeling of revelry I experienced in that initial theater experience is overwhelming and makes the film all the more enjoyable for me every time I see it. It has become an old comforting friend I can visit and re-visit when longing for a bit of my youth and that unique & campy 80's movie magic. I am also a fan of the original Jaws and that's actually what makes this film so enjoyable to some to this very day...intentional or not, the film itself was a fan of the original movie. Jaws 3-D allowed and even welcomed us, the viewers, to participate in the love and revelry for its late 70's predecessor. It was as though the film itself was saying, 'There will never be another Jaws, ever, so let's just have fun with this, lets make this a Jaws fan's fantasy of sorts. Let's see the two Brody boys as adults, bring back the shark, or ala Orca, the original shark's family and add a dash of mysticism in inferring that the family of the shark is out for revenge against the human family of the man responsible for killing the 'Daddy/Grandaddy shark' and lets set it all in one of the most popular amusement parks of the era'...and for me, it worked. I loved it then and enjoy it all the more now, so thank you for your review as this movie, for years, was considered something to quietly tuck away in a closet and simply pretend it never existed, which made it difficult to find out more about one of my favorite 'nostalgia movies' of all time. When I crave gravitas and masterful suspense, I watch the original Jaws, and when I want fun, nostalgic campiness, I watch Jaws 3-D. :-)

As a kid I enjoyed it, yeh as an adult I blantantly see the flaws, I was happy to acquire the Blu-ray 3D version. It is difficult to watch but “learning” to focus correctly it was better. In my opinion modern 3d films tend to have a perspective of mostly behind the screen, where this has many out of the screen effects. Still worth watching in 3d. I always found the colour a tad off.
6 years after this revue was posted I wonder if you will re revue it with the Blu-ray available. Thank you for the wonderful channel.

I saw this in NYC the week it opened. The 3D was bad of course - when the sub passed by the window in the distance (1:59), but appeared to be floating inches in front of you, the theater burst out in laughter.

This movie is sooo bad, I can hardly believe you even bothered reviewing it, Oliver, but that’s also kinda what I just love about your channel. You don’t require something to be great to do an entire retrospective-review on it. I hope you never quit doing what you’re doing ❤️ Thank you!

I remember seeing this in theaters when I was 13. It was good and the 3D for what I remember was good. Had a 3D poster for this film. Mainly like it now due to its nostalgia for what it was. The first Jaws film will always be the classic film.

I actually love all 4 Jaws films lol they are very nostalgic for me lol, I loved walking into the local video store as a kid and watching the artwork on the box covers, the sharks look so menacing lol, the first one is obviously the best, the Music soundtrack is fantastic, but we gotta give Jaws 3 D it's cult classic label! I always had a crush on Lea Thompson 💝

Great review, really well done Oliver! I saw the film in 3D in theaters and it was definitely polarized. The 3D REALLY looked 3D! The effects definitely came out into the audience and hovered unbelievably. You'll notice in the footage not just the obvious severed arm but the snake tongue, streamers, various things pointing toward you that TRULY had you pull back in your seat in disbelief of just how it seemed to come into the theater. The movie itself as you note well, was TERRIBLE. Those special effects even in the day were unacceptable for audiences, hearts sinking for Jaws fans just how bad it was. The final scene of the shark as you wonder might have been better in theaters, was truly unacceptably fake. We were all in horror, but not in the good way, at just how atrocious that scene is!

While I do feel _Jaws_ _3D_ is unnecessary and inferior (but still enjoyable to watch), I honestly love the concept of a "monster" rampaging through an amusement park, something that has become more popular in the _Jurassic_ _Park_ films, specifically _JP1_ and _JW_.
While it isn't a popular idea, I still love it when it comes to "monster(s) in theme park" movies.

If you're a fan of Dennis Quaid have you seen Dreamscape? He plays a man who has the power to enter people's dreams. It was one of his first roles. I was a teenager around this time and I remember him being known as a B movie actor what with Jaws and Dreamscape. But then came Enemy Mine and that cemented his status as a proper actor and star.
You can also see him in The Night the Lights Went out in Georgia from a little earlier. I remember that because there were boobs in it. I was eleven at the time.

Excellent review. Your work really hard on these reviews and it shows, because they are some of the best around and very thorough in content. Biggest problem with Jaws 3 is that it fails to throw enough christians to the lions (or shark), the fish does bugger and all compared to the first two and like you say, these films need suspense. Would be interesting to read Richard Matheson's original script, shame they did not go with it.

Great review/retrospective Oliver. Knew it would be. Loved the detail you went into for how they do 3D and why the version I always saw looked horrible. The more that I think about it, I believe Jaws, just like Highlander and Robocop should have just ended it after the first one, and not gone any further. Thanks for making another entertaining, and informative video.

Because all they did for Me was Sharpen the Image. But If they had been the Red and green ones, It would have put a Green Hue over the film. My mates had to tell Me what they were seeing In the 3D parts. I have the Film on DVD now. Thanks for the Explanation of how It all works. I did Experience a 3D movie before I lost My Eye. I grew up with this movie on constant rotation on HBO, so I have a bit of a soft spot for it. Two things that still blow my mind: Seaworld agreed to be involved, and that it is rated PG. I do love the ridiculous ambition they had. The movie really feels like it's on an epic scale compared to the first two movies. It feels like the right kind of progression for a series like this, and I do like most of the attacks or near attacks in the movie. I think a lot of the night time stuff holds up and is pretty scary. However, the FX and picture quality of the DVD are awful, but weirdly charming. Jaws 3 and 4 are just silly, but I watched them so many times as a kid, I can't help but kinda like them.

A persistent deep rooted rumor concerning this film was that Barbara Eden (IDOJ) appeared in this film. I saw this film in the theaters when it was released and from memory the 3-D was not that good. And the main 3-D image was saved for the end when the shark crashed through the glass with the people looking out. There Barbara Eden was supposed to have made an appearance. As suspected there did not seem to be an evidence of Barbara Eden running through the tunnel as the "screaming tunnel lady."
3-D did become popular medium and was ported out to television where, in a deal, you could get your 3-D glasses at Burger King. To work some adjustments to the TV were required to be made. Though the 3-D effect was not completely absent, it just did not work that well. Unfortunately, the effects that actually worked were created for the TV program, separately, and for effect. I remember the pool stick as an effective 3-D trick (and so did others) but no recollection of much else being effective or working, a disappointment. You can imagine it didn't last long. Today's 3-D visors for the PC dwarf those earlier attempt at F/X.

Hey did you see that Erik Visser uploaded his home movie footage to YT titled;" The making of the special effects for JAWS 3D"
It's quite a find for any1 interested in old-school practical effects! Shot back in 1983 @Private Stock Effects in North Hollywood helping constructing one of the sharks and later on working on the set with the fish tank which features the final money-shot blowing up a minature practical effects shark using high-speed cameras! It also features some great footage of the Undersea Kingdom & yellow mini-sub which were all minatures & filmed the same way"The Hunt for Red October was made using smoke & models. It's funny cause green-screen is so predominant in movies today. However back in those days Blue screen was def. the thing to do. I agree w/ you on the reason they went w/ green-screen in order replicate under-water sequences of which Blue-screen would've canceled out the "blues"... Anyway, thought you or your subscribers might get a kick out've that!

According to you the 3-D had "no effect whatsoever". Have you seen it in 3-D or did you just pull that one out of thin air? The 3-D version is readily available on Blu Ray and it has very strong 3-D. It actually has quite an effect
