The most historic island in the Med? | Ep89
Вставка
- Опубліковано 16 тра 2023
- Okay the island of Delos in Greece might get the vote for ancient history (we did love it there) but Malta definitely has the most fascinating history through the ages for me.
It's also one of those places that every sailor want to sail into. Grand harbour Valletta is stuff of legend and sailing into it gives you goosebumps!
We were lucky enough to get a short stay in Grand Harbour Marina in this episode as well, a very special place. There's so much to see along the coastline and inshore here I have the feeling we will not be in hurry to leave. And that goes double because we are not using Schengen days here. How's that? I hear you ask, well you'll have to watch the video to find out!

Thank you both for some wonderful memories. I was posted to Malta in 1964 for a one year commission in Fort St Angelo. I got to know it intimately thanks to car hire at 10 shillings (50p) for a weekend, shared between 4 of us. I sailed a lot in the Folkboat “Angela” round Malta and Gozo, figure of eight races. There were six Folkboats. Two each for Army, Airforce and Royal Navy. Very competitive and fun.
I returned 25 years later. Holiday. Very little had changed and I drove all over the island by memory. No maps required. Thanks again.
What a lovely story.
Another delightful video that includes technical info, a travelogue, history, and sailing. You two are a First Class act with a level of professionalism that is unmatched in the UA-cam sailing genre! Over-stated? Well, that's my prerogative! :)
Hopefully more people will visit our island... Thanks for the video
It’s a great place to visit. There’d be mad not to!
From the opening shot you had me enthralled. I haven’t visited Malta since 1984 and, after watching your episode, I’ve added it to my itinerary for next months trip to London, Paris, Vienna and Turkey. Serendipitously I found old friends who have retired to Malta and have graciously asked us to stay at their stunning villa in Madiena. Thanks for the inspiration!
Loving the videos in Turkey, brings back wonderful memories.
Now back on the dirt in Australia unfortunately.
All the best and again congrats on the great video's.
That opening shot had me thinking “ dang she’s brave with a drone that close , almost, then I thought ok it’s a well edited split shot, then I realized it’s some kind of gimbal selfie stick , as always a great video and a location I’m interested in, thank you,
Welcome back to our little great island.
Beautiful island, especially with local knowledge, made even better with the "Schengen Clock Stop", which will undoubtedly attract the cruising community.
Watching here in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. The talented pooch @ 27:25 had me looking out the window to see if flying carpets are now in vogue 🧐
nice to see Malta again i was there as a young boy, my father was in the RAF and stationed there Lived in Valletta , good times loads of small scars as boys get from doing silly things . fantastic times. thanks a great video
such a great channel. One of the best sailing channels
Another absolutely brilliant episode of Malta. Fabulously interwoven with Historic delights, architecture and those little things that make our Fair Isle tour completely satisfying to view. We can't thank you both enough for sharing this perfectly marvelous episode, the cinematography and editing is simply professional in every detail.
And thank you David for your comments which are always so lovely. Keeps us going.
Thank you so much for showing me bits of Valletta and Malta. It’s a place I love! ⛵️
Another great episode
My first time to my recollection of watching your lovely channel. Beautiful scenery, great drone shots as well. I know a young couple yachting through life, just had a baby in Malta and they too are in awe of the beautiful architecture there. Thanks for the presentation and I'll be watching more of you from now on. Be safe always. ♥️♥️
Yes we spent a lovely day with the Atticus crew in Grand Harbour before we left. Lovely family.
Great video have always enjoyed my visits to Malta
I love how you convinced that gentlemen with the dog at 27:25 to walk backwards for added effect and drama. So much attention to detail, nicely done ... ;-)))))))
Such an enjoyable video. Thanks so much!
What an epic place. Looks super clean. Putting on my list.
so glad you found Malta welcoming. hope you have/had a good time
Thank you for this video! Great filming and interesting stories….😁👍🥰
Enjoyable and interesting video, great area to explore, thanks for sharing.
I've never seen a dog walking backwards with a leash under tension. :D hahaha @ 27:25"
Ha! Yes the dogs are pretty special in Malta!
Well done 👍. Thanks for taking me along 🙏
Hopeful to visit Malta for the first time later this year, splitting our time between Malta and Sicily. Thank you for your insights, it looks absolutely enchanting. We'll have to extend our stay a bit to more than scratch the surface. Can't wait!
Pretty sure I've seen red post boxes throughout the UK though. 🤔
Great video guys.
In the end shot the ship that was there when I was there on holiday was the Costa Concordia......
Hi Steve, a good friend of mine is a mega yacht capt of 30 yrs. His current vessel is 70m and has a Peplink internet connection system. They are currently in Dubai. The antenna is mounted on the yachts mast. I am using his personal yacht (85' Broward) Peplink system here in Bc Canada. Works perfect.
That's Saharet of Tyre, I met my wife when she was sailing aboard her. Beautiful.
Good interesting video.Thank you.
Lucky duck. When I lived there as a kid in the early 70s, the Maltese "Hunters" shot anything that flew as long there was meat on it including sparrows. The video brought back some good memories of my one year stay there 👍
They still shoot the birds, but thankfully they don’t trap them any more.
Thoroughly enjoyed
Yes, can’t stress enough that while integrated LED offers wider lighting applications they can get hot and ignite. We’ve decided to switch from integrated to LED bulbs.
❤❤❤ excellent video as always
Magnificent place, thank you for sharing.
Nice opening shot with the drone drive through and ariel shot of the window!
Could be wrong but I do not think it was a drone shot. Steve has a selfie stick in his right hand and uses a 360 camera.😀
Yes it was my first shot with the new Insta 360 1 inch camera. Loving it! Judy had already had a hair cut so I thought it best not to risk a shorter cut flying the drone through!
Those are fish farms for tuna, captured in may, june, caged and towed to the shore farms for fattening. I did it for five years in the early 2000. The loss of fish is enormous but the return value is immense, so firms do not care of death rate. One year I towed two cages from Libyan waters to Spain in 75 days, average speed 12 miles a day.
I know we came across one three years ago in the middle of the night sailing from Menorca to Sardinia moving at 1/2 knot, couldn't work out what the hell it was from AIS and radar!
Fantastic video !!!
Never considered visiting Malta… UNTILL NOW!!!
Steve at 21:00 …. Careful Icarus
I have been following your exploits since the very beginning, and was really excited when you decided to visit Malta. I'm Maltese, but have been living in Switzerland for the last 37 years.
Enjoyed this very much and I look forward to your future videos on the Island. Thank you.
Did somebody say homesick?
From a small island to a land locked country, that’s a big change!
Near Lake Geneva where I used to have a small day sailer. Not quite the same though.
Those boats had three engines and propellers: the main one and two auxiliaries, in the early 2000. Today? I guess they maintained the safety tradition.
Staying in Grand Harbour would be an amazing place for a Marina, I've visited Malta quite a few times but always outside of Valetta and only visited. There's some reasonable scuba diving but to be honest the Med is so overfished (I doubt its changed in the past few years) that it feels a bit sterile.
Yes I’m afraid that’s got worse not better. There are enormous amounts of fish farms here now
Sailing Atticus is there also
We meet them in a later episode
Great filming, I purchased the true kit dinghy based on your review.
If you have your crew list stamped how long can you stay for?
Look forward to your next film.
Thanks for hard work
Doesn’t seem to be a limit!
With our strong connection to Malta, I wonder if the Schengen pause was because both the yacht and your good selves are from the UK? I did read that Malta was nearly part of the UK after the second world war (1956) but encompassing the island into the burgeoning NHS was the sticking point.
Malta was classed as a UK protectorate until 1964 but I really don’t think the Schengen thing here has got anything to do with which third country you come from. They just treat sailors differently here, being such a maritime country they seem to be more sympathetic to our needs so will stamp the crew list of a third party national rather than your passport. It’s not like that here if you arrive by air. Our daughter Millie was held up for 5 minutes at customs when flying our while they counted all her days stamped in her passport to see if she had overstayed, so they do strictly implement Schengen at the airport.
It's over a decade since the EU Fishing Boat scrappage scheme forced a reduction in Malta's boat fleet.
@sailinguma was in the vicinity 5:09 😊🙃
No actually that's Sailing Atticus, Jordan has his boat WiFi as Sailing Uma as a joke! I said I'd change ours to Delos to really confuse people!
@@svfairisle ohh right! I thought it was plausible knowing there were in Italy. Delos would be a great one haha
Can you answer a Schengen visa question? On a long offshore passage between two Schengen countries if you exit with a passport stamp and then re-enter the next county (or even the same) and have the passport stamped again are the days of the voyage - assuming it was outside of EU territorial waters - counted as Schengen visa days?
They shouldn’t count but it’s one of the many grey areas open to interpretation by various immigration officials. Might be worth it for a long trip I suppose, but a bit of a pain to keep checking in and out within the zone
Can you give the name of the new LED lights and that torch with the USB ports. Thanks! As usual your videos are amazing
Search Amazon for ‘seagrass LED neon light strip and Bestsun rechargeable torch
Can you program the LED's for party time?, as i can. (72 now so it dosen't get into that mode so often).
No 3 on the like list yay😂😂😂
Great episode , thank you! Just a question regarding the Schengen clock-we are maybe thinking of going to Malta July. Did you sign out of Schengen before arriving there? Thanks
We came straight from Montenegro so didn’t have a Schengen clock running. But if you are coming from the zone then yes, check out.
@@svfairisle thanks for reply! And then did you just go to immigration and they just signed the crew list? Sorry for all the questions
@@sailingrhumor5707 Yes, we explained we were staying on the boat an he said in that case he was happy not to stamp our passports, he even stamped Judys because she was flying back to the UK the next day but told her to come straight back when she returned and he would sign her out on the passport and in on the crew list
Will you be connecting with the crew of Atticus II who have also been in Malta?
We are anchored with them right now
The wood trim on your boat looks in very good shape. What products do you use to preserve the wood and keep it all so shiny and nice?
I use international woodskin I’ve showed it in films this winter when I was applying it.
Hi, regarding all the time and money spent setting up solar power , wind power etc, would it be easier and/or cheaper to use a petrol generator to power everything ?? Excuse my ignorance about this.
Well firstly if you’re doing it properly an relying on a generator for power you would want a built in suitcase style diesel generator like the one that we removed from Fair Isle because it was so much trouble. A new one of those would cost you about £20,000 to buy and install. A full on solar set up with a stainless steel arch that would do almost the same job as long as you didn’t want high draw 220v units like AC would probably cost £3,000 and then be maintenance free and cost free. You could have a small petrol genny for occasional charging but if you wanted to use this instead of solar for charging it would be an enormous PITA. It would also be much more expensive to buy and to run.
@@svfairisle solar power setup sounds like a cheaper and easier solution by far. Thats a great bit of knowledge to share with me. thanks for your reply. You guys could write a book!!
A land of hells bells and smells!
We will be sailing to Fair Isle soon!
It's cold even in summer, but you can get yourself a nice fair-isle sweater!
@@svfairisle ok will do!
28:35
Costa Pacifica? No Thank You ... Sister ship Costa Concordia ended up on her side in Tuscany in 2012 ... 33 dead.
Looks very beautiful there. Did you guys ever consider getting a Golden Visa from Portugal to end your Schengen woes?
We’ve heard a lot of problems with Portuguese visas, they are hard to get and have a lot of addiction requirements
@@svfairisle You heard wrong. The Golden Visa was/is extremely easy to get with the purchase of a property but this visa stops in July.
@@petersmith8134 ‘with the purchase of a property’ exactly the opposite of easy!
I’m curious how the other waterproof drone is working out? Is that what you are using?
I’ll do a full run down on how the egg x is going along with this one. At the moment I’m struggling with getting good colour with the egg, it seems to only have auto white balance (that doesn’t work very well) can’t quite believe there’s no way of locking it, I will contact them & find out
I have one more question. You mention at the beginning about not having the passport stamped. Is that because you are British citizens? We are American and wonder if we can also enjoy this benefit.
Yes you can. It’s because you are staying on your boat, if you intend to visit Malta but sleep on your boat they are treating you as crew and therefore can have a crew list stamped instead of your passport, I wish more countries would take this stance
It’ll be a sad day when you both leave the Med for pastures new 🙁
It will be a whole new adventure! 😊
@@judyaslett6209 I know it will, but you can’t beat all the diverse cultures around the Mediterranean.
Ps best channel on UA-cam by a mile 👏👏👏
@@123boatThank you 😊
Steve, did you manage to sort out a Maltese passport?
On its way!
@@judyaslett6209 😁👍
Propspeed way better than that, will last two years if done right
I have tried Propspeed before. Didn’t work well for me. Velox is the only decent one I’ve found. Managed to keep all growth off for 2 years and then just needed a quick rub down and re coating with just the top coat for another 2 years before a complete strip down
What ever you do DONT MENTION THE WAR🤣🤣🤣🤣
