      It is so strange though to wrap your head around the fact there is no league playoff - and even though champions league is kinda like it, the teams earn their berths basically for their accomplishments the prior season so it's not even the same team qualifying vs team ends up playing (different players signed/left). American sport brain no understand.

    I'm from Europe and a life long football fan, so I can clarify the free agency thing a bit:
    In soccer the concept of free agency is pretty vague. Most players get bought by teams, meaning: Club A pays Club B x amount of money for the rights to sign a player from Club B. Player swaps or trades happen sometimes, but they are quite rare. There are also certain players who wait until their contract runs out to sign with a new team, which is oftend called a 'free transfer' in football terms, but is the equivalent of a free agency signing in American sports. Clubs cant buy players all year round, only in 'transfer windows' which are in the summer and in the winter.

    Great job, Chris. An extensive wealth of knowledge once again. I too myself am still learning the soccer market. I think the thing that entices me the most is the international popularity and hopefully card value will continue to grow. In America our peeps STILL have not caught up with the popularity of soccer and are missing out. Big Time. I love World Cup and seeing the countries compete. So much passion. Investment stand point, I only invest in Messi, Christiano Ronaldo, OG Ronaldo and Beckham based on popularity. I’m still learning the newer guys.

      Those 4 players are solid but there are so many more GOATs that are huge in countries where football (soccer) is the main sport, i'd start by googling the "FIFA 100" Pele's list of the top 125 retired players to ever play. There are many more that don't grace that list too.

    Also to clarify the ‘Champions League’ which as you mentioned is the elite level continental competition for the top European clubs, used to be called the ‘European Cup’ before being rebranded. You will sometimes hear people still use the old term European Cup though so just know they are referring to the Champions League when saying that. BTW Dempsey in his peak at Fulham was much better than any level Pulisic has reached so far, however Pulisic does have potential if he can stay injury free and get a consistant run of games. Prime Dempsey was almost scoring a goal a game at one point, check out his goals vs Juventus while at Fulham. Great vid as always!

    11:41 The ranking by FIFA goes by "points". The US is off of a huge summer of victories in various tournaments and friendlies. That gave us a lot of points to jump to 10th, where as some of the teams you mentioned did not progress in their respective tournaments (even though, probably being favorites to beat the US if they played). You cannot put a lot of stock in ranking, but it is nice to see us "top 10".

      @No-reply throwaway how do you say that? It's market share is growing and its popularity is on level now with the NHL, MLB and NBA. The league is now fleshed out with 2 more teams coming in the next two years, ticket prices are much more affordable and the younger generation with its Latin American influence will only grow its TV audience over time.

    Hey Chris -- adding to the topic: The US league, called Major League Soccer or MLS, is a near top ten league globally. It's inaugural season in 1996 happened just after the World Cup was played in the United States in 1994.
    The first and only national set of MLS soccer cards were the 125 card 1997 Upper Deck MLS collection, which was a showcase of that inaugural 1996 season and the founding ten MLS teams (now 27 teams in 2021). Check out the collection on the TCDB or PSA Registry!

      But what's kinda lame is the absence of anything resembling a draft where best players go to weaker teams and then prove their greatness by leading team to a championship. Current situation leads to top very rich teams getting all talent and being best year after year, and it's hard to appreciate how good a player is when he is surrounded by so many good players as well. That's why I think maradona proved himself to be the greatest player ever without any argument that Messi could be better.

    • @drew8703
      @drew8703 3 роки тому +2

      Because maradona actually went to a Naples team in Italy when they were at the bottom and brought them up to the championship level in an epic fashion, well Messi has been schooled and played with a collection of excellent players with Barcelona so it's just hard to see how good Messi is as an individual player because he played on hands down most talented team of his era

      @@drew8703 well he’s in PSG now… if they don’t win the champions league… will make me think twice on how good he actually is. They have an amazing team on paper. Hopefully they work well as a team.

      @@drew8703 crazy how you had to make this about discrediting Messi

    • @drew8703
      @drew8703 3 роки тому +1

      @@andysvt8 I know and I want to be clearer I dont so much mean it is a knock on Messi's greatness, but there is just this aspect of the Barcelona team being probably the best club team of all time for their run and how that just makes it harder to see and judge just how great Messi was/is. One of the many many compelling things about Maradona I found the more I have learned about him was his move to Naples and him making them a champion immediately (it might have been literally from the bottom to the top in one year with no other players being added to the team, and this was the best league in the world). You take that plus his '86 World Cup run where he played the best tournament ever by a player as I understand and his team winning it all, and hes just on a Biblical scale that is hard to believe actually happened. Messi did have the run to World Cup final but Maradona also thereafter took team to '90 final as a follow up to '86 performance and a friend from Spain who knows more about soccer than I ever will told me the '94 Argentina was poised to make a big run and Maradona was set up with the drug test that got him kicked out -- and really soccer being more about skill makes me question whether there existed anything back then that could make someone a better soccer player (maybe, just maybe it allowed him to get in shape quicker). Anyway, Messi was the best player on the greatest team of all time I think I can say, I just cant say there exists evidence where one could realistically say Messi was better individual soccer player than Maradona. Its fun to debate though which I think makes any sport more fun to watch and talk about.

    What's cool about soccer too is that it's fairly easy to brush up on general history cuz it's basically a two year cycle with euro cup and world cup (the other south American hasn't been that big), and there are couple teams worth remembering in given era every 4 or 8 years. So you can watch recaps of tourneys and get an overview of history of teams, and the history of the nations teams and matches are what adds a lot to watching it now - and the fact that a lot of nations have been in actual wars against each other recently (Germany and England playing in 56 or something when there basically just been a clash of civilization, England and Argentina in a smaller but very recent conflict in 86) and just over history that still resonates a little with how countries see each other and reflected in their teams. I've heard it said euro cup is actually "harder" because of higher concentration of teams and format, eg, world cup has expanded a lot kinda like ncaa tourney and in the later stages teams of lesser talent can do enough to go on a run . But world cup is still cooler cuz it's pinnacle of world sport, even though now champions league is thought of as having the best soccer overall.
    Ok, sorry to make it seem like a know it all, but soccer is cool and feel like have same experience in learning and liking it, eg, Americans who just love sports but prevented from watching it cuz of cable limitations of time, then went to Europe for little bit and opportunity to have people help you learn a lot just by asking people stuff and their opinions.

  • @APMUMBP
    @APMUMBP 3 роки тому +1

    Free agent just like in North America is a guy without a contract and can sign with any team. But players have the ability to sign a pre contract with another team when they has 6 months left of their current contract. In cases like that players get sold for a very low price to the team that they signed a pre contract with. And they go to their new team 6 months before. Players that won’t get a chance to player and develop usually get loaned out to teams in a lower division. That way they play and develop instead of sit on the bench. There is a fee for that. But it’s not huge. If the club thinks the player is ready they bring them back to the original team the next season. Or loan him out again until they feel he is ready. There are other examples but it takes a lot more writing

    It is very easy to understand. NBA is one country-they play one league per year. Soccer has hundreds of countries that play the game. Each country plays a league plus a parallel round robin format. Then the top teams of the league winners from each country play in a Champions Cup round robin format. And the Top teams of the Round Robin Parallel rounds from each country play in a super cup. SOme countries can submit 2-4 teams per country as they are high calibre compared o minow countries who present 1 team only

    Great info Chris you covered pretty much everything. One thing that I'd add that often confuses is that in European soccer the seasons are from July to June so there isn't a 2021 Season for example. A lot of Soccer card sets just include one year in their title like US sports, but this can correspond to either year within that season. Its generally the latter year but its not always the case. Topps Premier Gold 98 (1997/1998) and Premier Gold 2013 (2013/2014) highlight the problem! As you mentioned each year relegation and promotion happen, so checking the league table and checking which teams are in the set is the best way to see if there is confusion.

I noticed, for example, you showed a raw copy of the 92 Score Italy Maldini card. The fact that packs go for a dollar or two and that base card went for $50 to $100 raw would be extra interesting. Currently you can pick it up now for like $15 so it may be a good buy for several reasons.

    Great video Chris! I am wondering if other viewers ripped any 1992 Score soccer. I ripped 4 boxes and upon opening the boxes, the packs were scattered. When I ripped the packs, about half the cards had bends in them. If this experience is consistent with others, I would say that this is going to be a sleeper set if half the cards are worthless because they are damaged. Also, I have not seen a perfectly centered Roberto Baggio.

      I have opened quite a few boxes and they have all sorts of condition and centering issues.

    Which cards are generally going to have more value: a top player in his club jersey or the same player in his country jersey?

    • @samimerilainen5309
      @samimerilainen5309 3 роки тому +2

      Rookie cards and stickers are usually first pro club so usually more value. Messi Barcelona and C.Ronaldo Sporting Lisbon etc. First National tournament World Cup, UEFA Euro and Copa America are also important specially If winning champ early of career..

    • @samimerilainen5309
      @samimerilainen5309 3 роки тому +2

      National World Cup, Euro, Copa print (pop) are usually much higher so not so rare and not so valuable but some vintage Pele, Maradona etc are usually only National Jersey rookie stickers so vintage is different thank pre-modern and ultramodern.

      From a uk football collector, I would say that generally it’s the player for the club cards (generally rookies to) as normally don’t play in a big tournament for a year years after they’re debate for club, especially if the rookie card is for an elite club IE top 5 teams from Orem Bund Ligue 1 etc

    Chris and like to hear your opinion is American way more investing collecting and Europe collecting investing and what you can see as American in Europe what Europeans and Americans should understand to Make collecting hobby healty and growing at same time? Can Europe and America meet with soccer collecting and investing?

    • @collectorinvestordealer

      Its possible, but it will be a while. Card collecting is not big at all in Europe, although the card companies are clearly trying a more global approach

      is starting bro, im from spain and you can find a good community constantly growing, also in germany, and uk.
      we always collect football cards since we where childs and is very common, but obviosly we focus more in collections like panini este, megacrack, adrenalyn and these. But actually people start buying also americans collections, sincerely i preffer to focus on messi rookies and these stuff, more traditional because i feel so saturated with all the collections that they try to sell like score, prizm, topps asnd all of these, there are a lot. But for example i like a lot panini instant with iconic moment like the one that messi appers lifting the world cup the number 118 thats one is crazy for me, and probably for all the messi fans that they are not a few

      absolutly bro, im from Spain and we always made football collections since we where a childs, the most common are panini este and adrenalyn xl, but we also have megacracks, collections of teams like the barca campió and these ones. But yeah we are start following the american culture of sending to psa and all of these but a bit slowly cause here in Europe is a little bit difficult or take a lot of time to send to psa so people have in raw state a lot of cards. Also the community is growing i will say in Spain, uK, Germany and France, are where you cand find more collectors. And yes peeople also buy prizm, mosaic, topps all these stuff, i preffer more classic like collect messi panini rookies from here, because i fell very saturated with all the collections that are coming into the market. But is crazy the potential that these market have, every child in south america and europe collect that cards when the are young so why not they will collect when they are a litte bit older? Also i like a lot panini prizm, from america, with good narrative pictures like the one of messi in the final
