Honestly.. as a soldier, I would find a situation such as this, going into battle against an alien invader... less frightening... way I see it, they come to exterminate me, my loved ones, and our entire way of life completely, making that choice to fight and allowing me to find my courage much easier.

This is pretty accurate. The enemy appears to have no air force. So the US Command are using the speed of their air power to move their ground forces quickly to the front before they can establish a beachhead, with air support. It's textbook. If you appear to have an advantage, you use it. An urban invasion of this scale is more about tactics than grand strategy. You don't deploy all your forces at once - so they're saving their jet fighters for when/if they actually need them.

If you paid attention and remembered, they didn't defeat the "whole alien invasion by themselves". They managed to get close enough to the command center to laze the target and call in a fire mission.
At the end of the movie, Los Angeles was still occupied. So were all of the other cities. Just because one CnC was destroyed doesn't mean the invaders in the other cities did step up their security in response. I don't mind if ya didn't like the movie...just make your criticisms more accurate :)

That Command Center were the one that enable the alien to control their aircraft/spacecraft, by neutralizing it, it gave US forces a breath to operate their Aircraft, helicopters and so on without worrying about anything else. At the beginning they were doing fine until Alien setup their Command Center which turn on their spacraft/aircraft hence the retreat.

Something you don't normally see when it comes to the Modern-Day Military having to confront against unknown threats from another world which adds a lot of tensions to the plot and actually hurting them with current military assets.

I actually like this movie quite a bit for a few reasons. 1. The aliens aren't some super powered DBZ style killing machines. 2. The Marines I find easier to relate to than someone like Tom Cruise in War of the Worlds. 3. For once our military is doing something other than be used as target practice by the aliens! 4. It just feels more practical and like a type of alien invasion that could happen on some level.
    But that's just me.

    Few things.
    1) Military targets along the coast (naval bases, fleets, carriers, subs, etc) were more than likely the first to be taken out.
    2) There were more than quite a few aircraft seen fighting them. Not sure about their drones but Aircraft do have to rearm and refuel. Just like the FOB, I'm thinking the drones targeted all of the air fields. So the remaining air assets had no choice but to pull back.
    3) The units in the movie were the first responders stationed in the immediate area.

A full auto weapon is extremely difficult to keep on target. In our own warfare, it's not uncommon for hundreds of bullets to be fired at a target before it's hit and killed. Plus, they did attack the Earth with a force around 30 million, according to the web site.

    • @chrisburke624

      You nailed it.
As a former C9A2 gunner (upgraded M249 for you Americans who read this) it’s called a ‘cone of fire.’ The barrel of the weapon will naturally recoil in a circular pattern, with the damage effects more disbursed the further away your target is.
Machine guns aren’t notoriously inaccurate - but they do suppress the area in front of them due to volume of fire. Which is what they are supposed to do.
Anybody who isn’t behind cover will typically spring a few leaks, so it keeps the enemy pinned down while maneuver elements close with & destroy.

One wiki site said they had anti-ship mines that have "a 400' blast radius". Due to their attacks being very coordinated (and effective!) I presume the alien forces landing in places like san diego and hawaii, set their strategy up to destroy all of the ships and subs at the same time, before proceeding inland.

Well, those aliens seems to have a technologie pretty close from our own. Their weapons still have ammo. They are using water as fuel (we've started to develop technologies like this). They are using drones, so do we. They don't have "antigrav" technology. They don't have shields. So even for them, crossing the immensity of space is a real challenge. They almost crash-landed, they can't orbit.
Regarding the scale of the attack and since they are here for ressources, I guess they are desperate.

@@johnnydoe9169 Not really as much as you think. They might have interstellar travel but it seems that it's not casual Star Wars or Star Trek style traveller, hell even FTL in Battletech seems to be a breeze compared to it in this film.
This means they had to travel light and use huge amounts of man power. They probably had to sacrifice heavy armor and other things just to make it. And as the OP said, they're desperate. This might be a one way trip for them.
Another aspect is just because a race built more advance tech does not mean the entire race is made of geniuses. There are island out there with people stuck in the stone age, the ships that sail passed them are literally thousands of years more advanced then are but most of the people who pilot and use them are not as smart as the people who designed the technology the ships is built out of. They still make mistakes, they still crash and sink, mistakes re still made when they're built. So even if these aliens were thousands of years more technologically advanced, it doesn't not actually make them as a whole smarter then us.

Tactics, terminology, organization, fireteam roles, they certainly made an effort to be authentic. I would of left rodriguez's character out. In real life chances are she would of gotten herself killed on the freeway, I digress. Other scene's where the platoon made too much noise. Still good

LA was the last line of defense in the west coast.LA usually doesn't have more than a couple naval units stationed. Sitting people down isn't going to magically make peace.

As much as they went for accuracy, they completely screwed up with maintaining silence while on the move, in the neighborhood mainly. With all of the noise they made, they would of given away their position away even without the radio trackers. Still though for sci-fi this was much better than expected.

True. But without air support they would have eventually been thrown back, especially after we got used to them and their weapons/tactics.

Perhaps they invaded because our water is in a liquid form and therefore easier to access. Perhaps there is something about Earth seawater's chemical composition that is special to them that can't be found in water in asteroids or on moons/worlds like Europa.

Pacific Fleet is in San Diego, so you'd be right. so they probably neutralized those before moving in on LA.

Yet SOOO many people liked Iron Man 2 even though it only had 10 minutes of action when this film dosen't have that whole "They have sheilds" bullshit. You wanna know why I really like this film?
