So, i actually think this was in another lemmino video but this thing happened recently, when they had a blackout in LA people reported strange dots in the sky to the police; it was the first time theyd ever seen the milky way
Hahaha, well as a matter fact the blackout was an effort to conceal the city so in case of an invasion that could help protect heavily populated areas or even make the invaders to not know if the hay arrived or not, also the lumminic contamination of a city would make it difficult for the army to know what to shoot at.
It’s especially funny when you know that they’re all hamming it up for the camera/radio. You can find bloopers from old black and white movies and the actors slip into their regular voices when they laugh at their mistakes.
Just imagine a group of scientist made a time travelling machine and decided to go solve this mystery and went back in time only to realize it was them who made the scenario happen.
It may seem like an impossibility for balloons to survive the intense AA fire, however there are 2 things to consider: 1) According to a British research published in 2003, during the Battle of Britain, it took over 20,000 rounds of AA fire to shoot down 1 aircraft. This was because there were only 3 ways to shoot down an aircraft - hitting directly, using a timer fuze to detonate and using a fuze that detonate at a specific altitude. All 3 were very inaccurate (especially at night) such that some claim the actual number of AA rounds to shot down 1 aircraft was more than 100,000 rounds. All this changed when the Allies in 1943 started using... 2) VT fuze (proximity fuse) which was able to detect (using radio waves reflected from target) its proximity to the target and detonate at the closest range. All this before integrated circuits or digital processors were invented. This device was so secret it was not declassified until 1954. An example of how effective the VT fuze is, when the US first tested the VT fuze they had planned for the test to last 2 days where the new fuze were to be used against 3 radio controlled drones. All 3 drones were destroyed on the first day with only 4 shots. During the Battle of Los Angeles, the US had no VT fuze and fired approximately 1,400 AA rounds, so it is well within the realm of possibility for the balloons to escape damage.
But there is also the pressure waves of a shell exploding. You make good points for shooting down an aircraft made of wood or metal but a balloon would likely shatter after an hour of shelling due to the intense pressure forcing the air inside the balloon around.
@@sayhallo3769 I assume that most of that pressure just pushed the balloon around. Also the pressure from small AA fire is not huge and given that not an awful lot exploded near the balloon (probably) it's quite likely that it didn't have a huge effect
@@sayhallo3769True, but it could also be that the composition of shells wasn’t able to cause shockwaves that big. Depending on the AA guns used, these could range anywhere from 20mm Oerlikons and 40mm Bofors to 90mm m1s firing from all around LA. This mix of smaller and large calibers may have simply not caused large enough explosions at a common enough time. Another possibility is mixing AP and HE shells; AP shells don’t have the same explosive filler as HE shells and would cause less destructive explosions as they went off. This would count for the massive quantity of shells as well as the inability to shoot down the balloon.
@@Palgineer Standard American AA batteries were before the war ramped up were 40mm "Chicago Pianos", 127mm HE guns, as well as many small arms fire like 20mm oerlikons. Depending on the size of the balloon, a single near miss 40mm or 127mm would likely cause it to rupture and pop.

Hitting objects with anti-aircraft shells back in the day was extremely hard. Proximity fuses (which would explode on proximity to an object and thus make getting a hit easier) were still in development in this stage and highly classified.
Still, the sheer amount of daka would’ve definitely destroyed at least a single target. Think of german AA in the late war. With failing equipment, starved and inexperienced soldiers, AA still downed huge numbers of bombers and fighters.

It's also not true that there was mass panic about a Japanese invasion of the US mainland, so maybe there will be a correction. The Japanese never had anything close to the capabilities of landing troops on the West Coast, and articles from after Pearl Harbor, interviews, vox pops, opinion polls, etc., reflect that very few people were seriously worried about a Japanese invasion (for good reason).
Honestly its a doomed if you do doomed if you dont situation. If they didnt fire and it was an enemy aircraft than the city would of potentially been bombed.

I look up Lemmino on UA-cam at least once a week to see if he uploaded and UA-cam just “forgot” to give me a notification again... but here we are. It’s been too long, bro!
The photographs of the event are night photos, which means that they were long exposure pictures. So, the "object" that people see in the spotlights, was just a blob of distorted light from a long film exposure that is needed to capture night photography. This is a fun mystery that I've been interested in for years, but the reality is, that if an object of any kind was truly lit up with those large lights, many more people would have clearly seen it, and there would've been far more certain reports than the vague reports that actually came in. Some saw planes, some balloons, others a blimp, some more saw bag shaped objects, but most saw nothing. This event is lost to time, and the true series of events that created it will never be known, but it was most likely misunderstandings, miscommunications, misidentifying, and fear. And, once the first shells were fired, it exasperated the entire situation.
@@julzyboy8960 wait, ya lost me. Adding upbeat music to a nuclear detonation makes them a, and I quote: "Soulless ignorant apathetic fuck." What? This itself requires a Lemmino documentary.

It is known that the Japanese had a better understanding of air currents than the US did, and used balloons with timer-released bombs released from Japan to attack the US mainland. Most just floated over forests on the west coast and did no damage. Some downed balloons were recovered in Oregon.
Me: "That was a good video. I wonder what the comments say" Everyone: "I'm gonna format my comment like this and make a joke slightly different than the last guys!" Every single time
This is what social media has become... brainwashed trolls with no originality. The internet was supposed to make us more informed. I feel bad for this generation, no wonder they are so depressed.
Weather balloons are often made of synthetic material, and the air inside can wobble along with the wind around it, so it is well possible that this isn't picked up by the radar at all (especially with older, less-precise radar technology). Also, the metal equipment is much more likely to be a bright spot on the radar, but is probably too small to be distinguished from noise, or existing debris of things that are being shot at it. I think whatever the radar reading are, they would be worthless.
they wanted meteoroloical data that could in any way benefit them in case of an attack. dumb, yeah, but they guys doing were probably innocent of the idea of it causing a false alarm. I only learned that by pausing and reading at 13:38, it seems like an important detail he left out.
Mr3344555 and breathing life into it by adding professional animation and editing while properly and clearly narrating? Recycling doesn’t justify your saltiness.
In 1944, Japan did release balloons armed with bombs into natural wind currents. A small number successfully made it to the West Coast. The attack killed a group of children in Oregon who were on a church picnic and were curious about the strange object that had landed in woods. Some of these balloons could still be in the backcountry of the West Coast, still able to detonate.
I've always thought it was obvious that the photo just shows the confluence of multiple searchlights. You can see that when just two beams cross, the diamond shaped part where they intersect is brighter. Now make six or seven from lights arranged in a circle, and you end up with a single super bright blob with multiple angular edges.
If it was a slow-moving target visible to the naked eye, hours of anti-aircraft shells would have definitely landed solid hits, especially with the increased armament due to wartime concerns. As such, either it was somethings that could withstand such hits, or, as occum's razor would suggest, it was nothing.
They said it was going 200 MPH first... this whole thing seems strange. Idiots hadn’t invented cell phones yet! if this happened in 2021 with different technology, we’d know what happened

i heard once that "carrot" is a way to trick german pilots to eat carrots in order to see better at dark rather than letting them get suspicious on brits has figured radar or night vision on planes or something like that lol.
It's worth noting - weather balloons will only show on radar if they carry a radar reflector - a device intentionally meant to make them show up on radar. My understanding is that radar reflectors didn't exist in the 40s, so it makes perfect sense that a balloon would show up visually and not on radar but it doesn't explain the earlier radar warnings of something approaching. Until digital screening in the 70s, radar was notorious for false positives, and the radar tracked something from 120 miles away to a "few" miles away in 6 minutes, roughly 70% faster than the fastest plane that existed during the war. To me that strongly argues a false positive radar scare as the initial impetus, followed by shooting anything that even looked like it could be something in the sky.
I often like to muse about how strange aliens would find us. I picture this alien mom telling a bedtime story about a spaceman, going "then he came across this bizarre creature - it had two eyes, two arms, two legs, two ears, and only one nose!"

I think whatever the radar reading are, they would be worthless.

i heard once that "carrot" is a way to trick german pilots to eat carrots in order to see better at dark rather than letting them get suspicious on brits has figured radar or night vision on planes or something like that lol.
