Tom Petty and Jeff Lynn talking about working with Orbison during the Traveling Wilburys sessions were repeatedly shocked at the ease of his vocals being laid down. Several times they thought he was just mouthing the words as a warm up, then on the playback, it was a flawless full power song on the tape.
    He was special for sure.

Roy Orbison claimed in interviews that the lyrics for this song came to him in a dream; he wrote the music once he woke up. Typical of many Orbison songs, it's a heartbreaker: asleep at night is the only time he can be with the one he loves, as when he wakes up, she's gone.

James Burton on lead guitar, arguably the best guitarist of all time, Ronnie Tutt on drums and Glenn D. Harding on keyboard. TCB were the backing group to the stars. You knew you had made it to the big league when they backed you. That Lovin' You Feelin' Again (F#2-A4)

"Pretty Woman" is more famous. Also, "Cryin" is amazing. He did a version with kd lang, two voices that were made for each other. She did a solo version that I prefer. You need to react to her a lot more. "Constant Craving" is one of her absolute best. She has done some country songs in her own style. Check out "Trail of Broken Hearts" and "Pulling Back the Reins." She's also covered "Crazy" by Patsy Cline who was a big influence. Live or recorded, she's gold. As flawless a singer as I've ever heard.

"It's Over" is a real emotional tear jerker.. not requested that often for some strange reason. He has so many many memorable songs. To stand there and hardly move or open his mouth to produce that sound particularly when he was young was magical. Never will be another like Roy Kelton Orbison. You must be pretty good to upsatge the Beatles for them to ask him to "go home Yankee"!!. Of course it was all in good faith, but for the crowd in England to keep asking Roy Orbison for encores and forget about the Beatles who had been on before is pretty special. He was by all accounts a really lovely humble guy. Sure miss the "Big O"

Roy’s songs speak to the soul. They’re either reaching down to the depths of our pain in a love that’s been lost, or he’s taking us to the heights of ecstasy in a love that’s been won or redeemed. Either way, no matter what human experience you’re going through, Roy makes every word count.

Yes!!! This is my favorite Roy Orbison song and has been since my childhood. The "wiggle" in his voice is called vibrato, and his is perfect. He has so many great songs. Listen to Cryin and his version of Blue Bayou.

I think his slower songs, like this one, "Running Scared", and "It's Over", are some of his very best. His voice is magnificent. His remake of his own song, "Crying" with kd lang, will bring tears to your eyes. Their voices create a heavenly sound.
As for the question you asked, I prefer *any* other song by Roy over "Pretty Woman". It's been so overplayed, IMO. Great reaction!

Oh yeah, got some Roy again! He has so many fantastic songs, this is a great concert…have it on cd. Both songs you mentioned are tops, but my favorite is “You Got It”, live performance. The percussion is just terrific! Roy’s voice is just iconic, nobody is even in the same category.

This is from the Black and White Night, live from 1987. My favorite songs Roy Orbison sang that evening are “The Comedians” written by Elvis Costello, who plays the guitar in the band behind him, and “Running Scared”. That must have been a great night! Both for the audience and for the artists themselves. The respect is written all over their faces.

In 1966 I had the pleasure of watching Roy Orbison sing this song live. It was in Lethbridge, AB, Canada. That was a day I will never forget because I took a 'first date' Adele to the concert with me. It was such a beautiful night, Adelle was flat out beautiful and attractive on every level... and I was nervous as hell not to screw the date up. I had never even seen her this close before, I had only passed her in the hallway at high school and as I recall I had never really noticed her before. Eventually I started hearing that she had eyes for me. And since that's always a welcome piece of gossip... I phoned her and asked her out. And 4 days later here we are. At the Roy Orbison concert.
We heard him actually sing all the way up into that "airy falsetto"... in real time. Holy shit, although it was in 'real time" it was also *unreal*... at the same time. Roy Orbison live was almost a "spiritual" event. Because at some point you start to realize that "I'll never get this opportunity again for the fest of my life to hear Roy Orbison sing 'live'. Sooo........ after the concert I just didn't know how to act with the lovely Adele... So
I took her home. Besides, I was bumming my dad's car and by then it was already ancient. So I took the beauty Adele home and I've never seen her since. I'm sure she's still a freakin' knockout though, LOL Sorry about the not-so-happy ending, but you know how it goes. You're the one freakin' out about it, not me. 🤣 😂 💗

The Black and White Night Concert is epic. They assembled a backing band of All-Stars. And what is so cool, they were content to be the backing band. Very little elbowing to steal the spotlight off of Roy. If my memory serves me correctly, Springsteen was there. kd Lang, Bonnie Raitt, Jennifer Warnes, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne, T Bone Burnett.

The reason Roy wore sunglasses was because he had major stage fright. Dude was a legend, The Beatles opened up for him, and Elvis said his biggest fear was Roy Orbison playing on the radio before him, since he knew that Roy was the most talented one.

What an amazing evening. Can't even imagine being there. On piano was Glen D. Hardin, who had played piano for Buddy Holly as well as Elvis Presley. Lead guitarist James Burton, drummer Ronnie Tutt and bassist Jerry Scheff were also from Presley's group. Male background vocals and some guitars were provided by Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther and Steven Soles. Female background vocalists were k.d. lang, Jennifer Warnes and Bonnie Raitt. Not all the stars were on stage. Glimpses of celebrities in the audience can be seen, including Kris Kristofferson, Patrick Swayze, Billy Idol and Sandra Bernhard.

It's on video called Black and White Night

@@Spo-Dee-O-Dee That's true,. My point is that in the vast majority of cases, the version of a song we like and first heard is the studio version. Just by listening to a song over and over, sometimes for decades, the timing, accompaniment, voice inflections, is something we notice right away.
