Britt, I have a real soft spot in my heart for k.d. lang. A friend of mine went to a new high school in Alberta and she was very afraid because her previous high school had been really difficult. She had epileptic seizures, and for some reason, the teachers at her old high school would clear the classroom if she had a seizure, as though she had the plague. She had no friends. Not one. But she had her first seizure at the new high school, and when she opened her eyes, k.d. lang was holding her hand. And all the kids were there, and the teacher explained that it wasn’t anything to be afraid of. After that, she said kd took her under her wing and for the first time in my friend’s life, she had a group of friends. k.d. was considered very cool. I’ve never forgotten the kindness she showed my friend. And anyone who has heard her sing once can never forget.
Wow, what a touching story! Thank you for that.
What a wonderful story. Thank you for sharing it with us. I've always had the feeling that k d is a very kind, gentle and humble soul. Your story confirms it.
@@talltulip aw thanks. My friend said she is a lovely person.
@@frankpentangeli7945 you’re welcome. I think people should know. Take care.
Great story. Sort of doesn't surprise me. I say that because, KD's singing just cuts into my soul. Tears stream down my face, while I gasp for air. I'm always amazed at the emotional control she must have to put that into the air and have it hit me like a big wave so hard that I can't control MY emotional response.
Her LIVE AF cover of Roy Orbison's Crying at his tribute. EPIC!!
The MTV Unplugged version is even better!
Yessss.... agreed.... 🤩🥰
Yes the MTV unplugged live version is ridiculously wonderful. I could listen to it all day long.
Not to mention the duet of her and Roy singing it together. Magic!!!
Her performance to open the Olympics in 2010 Vancouver Canada was another level. They had asked the songwriter, Leonard Cohen but he designated K D LANG as his choice. A Canadian written and sung by another great Canadian voice.
I agree that version is stunning
Totally agree. The best!
i prefer this performance, it feels more intimate and i love the orchestra.
1000%
Thank you for reacting to KD! She has the most amazing voice in the universe. Listen to her sing Crying & Constant Craving. Knock your socks off 👍
yes!
Constant Craving for sure! 😊
Her version of "Crying" at the Roy Orbison Tribute concert gave me the chills.

Britt, I'm glad you discovered one of Canada's national treasures in k.d. lang. In 2006, Leonard Cohen was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. k.d. lang agreed to pay tribute to the legendary singer-songwriter with a rendition of his beloved song, “Hallelujah.” She had never performed the song for Cohen and “was excruciatingly nervous” knowing he would be in the audience. After the song she received a standing ovation, and as the credits began to roll, she ran down the stage steps towards Leonard to offer him her reverence and appreciation. He rose to meet her and they warmly, respectfully embraced. During her world tour in 2008, lang gave a beautiful performance of the song backed by the BBC Concert Orchestra in a concert filmed at St. Luke’s Church in London. After hearing it Cohen’s partner, singer Anjani Thomas, looked at Cohen and said, “Well, I think we can lay that song to rest now! It’s really been done to its ultimate blissful state of perfection.” He agreed. Lang later sang Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” at the Vancouver 2010 Olympics Opening Ceremony. It was spectacular!
I will never ever in all my life forget her performance at the Winter Olympics. The beauty and power of her performance absolutely overwhelmed me. Maybe the closest to a spiritual moment I have experienced.
❤❤ go down that KD rabbit hole so many awesome performances
This was at the Juno awards ( Canada’s Grammys ) and Leonard Cohen was in the audience. He had been asked in 2010 to sing it at the Winter Olympics Closing Ceremony in Vancouver. He declined but suggested k.d. sing it. She has a tremendous range and power to her voice. Roy Orbison was so taken with her voice he asked her to record a duet with him of his hit “ Crying “. After Roy’s death she was asked to sing it again at a celebrity Tribute Concert for Roy. She bought the house down!
Leonard Cohen was a genius.
So true, honey. I was reading his poetry before he became a songwriter. Boy, I’m old !!
KD is incredible. Love her use of dynamics. Just because you CAN blow up every phrase doesn’t mean you SHOULD. Aretha understood that too
If you ask me, her version is the definitive version of this song. No one else will ever do it as well. Her performance of it at the Olympics some years back was absolutely amazing.
...except Leonard.🙏🇨🇦
It's my opinion k.d. brought this song back and made it so popular that everyone other singer had to cover it. But none as well as k.d. lang.
Her choices!! She was friends with Cohen…he said that
the song was now hers. She is a singular singer, always
touching the soul
I love that Leonard is in the audience and the bare feet.
My favorite version of her singing this song is at the Logies in Australia. Those last 3 Hallelujah s will bring you to your knees
KDLang is magical ❤
She sang this song for the Olympics in Vancouver at the opening of the games.
I have been listening to KD sing this song a lot lately, I mean a LOT! Not only is KD's performance exceptional, as is her talent, but the performance of the Manitoba Orchestra is also absolutely wonderful as well. You should check out KD's performance of Roy Orbison's famous song "Crying", at the Roy Orbison Tribute Concert from 1990. ✌️& 🫶 from 🇨🇦!
So the world knows why we Canadians like KD so much
A Canadian Icon singing a song written by a Canadian Icon....😍🇨🇦
perfection
You definitely must listen to KD do Roy Orbison's "Crying"! You will not be disappointed.
Love kd! this song at the 2010 Winter Olympics was amazing
Kd sang Happy Birthday to me in a bar she used to play at before the records and fame. We all knew just how beautiful a person KD is, and special voice from Consort Alberta. She is fantastic.
k.d. Lang is one of Canada's best unkept secrets in the music industry. Her range, her power, and her talent know NO limits. Her rendition of this at the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Opening Ceremonies was INSPIRING. Her song was the piece played when the "doves" were released, symbolizing peace. This is the best song for this tradition, and no one could have sung it better at that time than Lady Lang. I love her music, and she makes me proud to be Canadian.
K.D. is one of those rare people who can, and does, sing literally ANYTHING. Incredible talent!
Britt this is 🇨🇦 Juno awards the audience is her peers she is has the best voice I have heard in my 60yrs. Well deserved standing ovation Katharine Dawn.❤
Musically, Canada kicks ass! KD Lang has a great voice. RIP Leonard Cohen. Love ya Britt!
There were over 42 MILLION people around the world that watched this woman perform that song, LIVE and barefoot, in 2010. I was fortunately one of them. She has done a lot of other shit as well. She is worth a few more reviews from you. Thanks. You are real close to your 300,000 subs. You GO!
kd lang is an amazing artist and you’ve chosen one of her greatest performances here. But there is so much more. Constant Craving, Roy Orbison’s Crying, The air that I Breathe are equally beautiful in her hands. But also experience some of her earlier songs: Tall in the Saddle, Bopalena and Miss Chatelaine show some of the range of this iconic singer.
Thanks for this reaction and I hope you’ll continue to enjoy and react to more from kd.
KD has an exceptional voice.
One of Canada’s lost treasures. I wished she would come back. I would see her in a second. ❤
KD is fantastic. I just love her music, her choices when she sings is great. When she sings this song it makes me cry it’s so beautiful. ❤
Listening to that, it's hard to believe that Katherine Dawn started out as country singer, performing in cowgirl boots and a little Western skirt. But you haven't heard anything until you've heard her perform Crying at the concert for her late friend Roy Orbison at the Universal Theater in Cleveland in 1990. It was the most beautiful, heartfelt performance I've ever heard.
One of the most gorgeous voices ever produced by a human. Just gorgeous every single time, no matter what she sings. Hers is the best version of this song hands down.
You Must react to her best song by far imo., Constant Craving . Great video , catchy song and harmonies about the Buddhist circle of life and death . Released in 1992 , and never ever get tired of listening too . One of the most sublime vocals ever recorded in a music studio .
kd is a very special performer.
she is the best female singer we have! Beyond her tone, it's her interpretation. : )
Pretty sure you mean Lara Fabian lol, but to each their own.
The song’s author, Leonard Cohen, literally said that NO ONE else should “bother” singing this song now, because he loves how K.D. sings it, SO MUCH. My FAVORITE performance is actually when she sang it at the 2010 Olympics, and there’s a backstory: Apparently, Leonard Cohen had been contacted and asked to perform the song at the Olympics with K.D… He actually REFUSED (as a COMPLIMENT to K.D.) and said no, because - Leonard said - it was HER (K.D.’s) song now.💕
If you don’t cry when you hear kd’s rendition you have no heart or soul 💜
That’s a great performance, but the one you need to see is her opening the Olympic Games with that song, if this one is great, that one is phenomenal!
Such a stunning vocalist.
From one great Canadian covering another great Canadian absolutely love it
Thank you so much for reacting to this performance, Britt. It's the perfect example of an artist "leaving it all on the stage." Every word, every note is given the time and attention it deserves. k.d.'s voice comes not from her chest voice or head voice, but from deep in her soul. This has always been on my list of Top 3 performances of all time and always will be.
I’m not a particular fan of hers, but a few years ago we watched her performance at the Winnipeg Folk Festival. Sitting on the grass in the early evening with a huge crowd of people, and no one moved when she sang this. She really knows how to hold an audience.
K.D. Is a Canadian treasure.
She has such a strong beautiful voice. I have never heard her sing anything that wasn’t perfect. You should try Blue Velvet or any of the duets with the great Tony Bennett.
She is one of my favorite vocalists ever. She’s better live than recorded, which is a true testament to her talent.
kd Lang sang this song beautifully ❤
She has a song called ‘Busy being blue’ that is phenomenal. Strongly recommend.
This is at the Canadian Juno Awards. A 15-minute standing ovation from her peers
Top tier singing.👍👍
K.D. absolutely does this song the best in my opinion and apparently so did Leonard Cohen. I also love the orchestral arrangement for this particular rendition,I think it’s fantastic. K.D. Lang is definitely a National Treasure.🇨🇦🇨🇦❤️
An Alberta (Canada) legend. One of the best voices ever..!!! Makes me proud to be a fellow Albertan. If you can, check out some of her early music; ' Absolute Torch and Twang' is fabulous...
Please watch KD singing this at the 2010 ympice opening ceremonies. It's the best rendition I have ever heard. I hope you check out her original music also. A Canadian icon
Been a fan since the cowboy punk days in the bars in bc and alberta 30 plus yrs ago .dive deep in this rabbit hole, you won't be disappointed!
Hi, Britt. This is my first time commenting, and I have tears as I type. This song was one of my late husband's favorites, this rendition by K.D. in particular. He died a year ago, and we had an instrumental version of this played at his service. In an interview, Leonard Cohen said of all the musicians who had covered his song, K.D.'s interpretation was his favorite, and we can all see why. You brought back so many wonderful memories for me by selecting this. Thank you for giving me joy today. - Carla
Shadowland her 1987 album. Chef's kiss! I still listen to it today. Owen Bradley, who did Patsy Cline's arrangements, did the K.D.'s as well.
She was one of the last performers on Johnny Carson, it was a REMARKABLE performance
Yeah, Johnny loved her
K.D. Lang is a Canadian great. "Crying" at Roy Orbison's tribute is amazing.
I love everything K D Lang sings!
I really enjoyed watching you experience KD she is our pride and joy. Check out her singing Crying & Constant Craving. Just to name a few.
I love KD LANG...her country albums are special too....SHES GIFTED!!!!!!....her live version of CRYING is amazing.....
Always enjoyed her music, her strength as a Out L in ole country is AMAZING.She took
Hits.
Great country singer.
Some of Canada's best, composer & singer both
Constant Craving live MTV unplugged. Amazing.
Yes... Canadian singers are the MOST!!!!!! I HIGHLY suggest Fur Elise (live version) by Faouzia pronounced Foh-zee-yah! This will touch your soul and leave your jaw on the floor!!!! K.D. is one of my all time fave Canuck talents! O'----- Canada!!!!! 😆😁🍁
Also..... I wanted to add.. that her rendition of Hallelujah done at the Vancouver Olympics is equally as stunning but a bit different! 🤩🥰
Love her voice and your comments. I have seen her in person a few times and she is fantastic, and Canadian 🇨🇦🇨🇦
I always have to watch the whole well earned standing ovation at the end. She's so humble. I love to watch it.
Her perfectly controlled powerful voice goes right to my core. This and her cover of Roy Orbison’s “Crying”.
Yay… I hope you will do more of her! She’s amazing❤
She is our darling, Canada's and the world.
you could get all her cd's and enjoy her incredible range. she
is truly an amazing song writer and singer
She's has an amazing voice. You should check out her live performance (MTV unplugged) of constant craving.
I also loved the song way before I heard KD's version but it was then that I started unexpectedly sobbing. I can listen to it without crying now but what a soul punch! She also performed this at the opening Olympics ceremonies here in Canada 💖 by the way, I find you very perceptive throughout every reaction ❤
May I suggest another incredible performance when she covered Roy Orbison's song "Crying".
Her voice is a treasure . You have a beautiful voice as well
I've watched a lot of reactions to KD's performances. Yours was among the best. Your ability to understand and then express KD's musical choices was informative even to someone who has heard her sing this literally hundreds of times. Great work. Thanks for reviewing KD.
I agree with the comments suggesting her 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony rendition of Hallelujah could well go down as one of her greatest (plus it's visually stunning). She prepped for that six minutes for several months, speaking in only a whisper when not rehearsing for much of that time. Her exceptional performance stood out even more because earlier in the evening rock/pop greats Bryan Adams and Nelly Furtado lip sung (yup lip sung at an Olympic opening ceremony) their duet of that game's theme song. It wold be interesting to hear your reaction too KD's first appearance at an Olympic games in contrast. Just when KD was starting her career as a Country singer in Canada she was invited just a few hours down the highway from her home town to sing in Calgary, Alberta for the Closing Ceremonies of the 1988 Winter Olympics. The two performances are night and day. In 1988 her chopes while singing Turn Me'Round are just as good but they are a raw and high energy mix of yodel, twang and blues. ua-cam.com/video/sxsUc6EdeRQ/v-deo.html
Or if you'd like to hear arguably her best recorded live version of Hallelujah you might check out her 2010 Logies rendition (The Australian equivalent to the Grammies). ua-cam.com/video/--FrDSx-21k/v-deo.html
Australia is a huge market for KD and her performance during the Fire Fighters Relief Concert (I believe in 2020) is remarkable for the emotion she conveys. KD has reportedly moved to a phase in her career at this point where she feels she can no longer chase the musically "perfect" performance but instead invested her maturing Buddest centered spirituality into making her performances as emotionally true as the moment allows. Her set starts with a stunning rendition of Jane Sidberry's The Valley and then brings the stadium to crys for an ovation with her Hallelujah. ua-cam.com/video/KpBu6m5GCIU/v-deo.html Just a remarkable singer and person.
Britt, she is fantastic. Years back a gal gave me a CD. She outsmarted me, this young lady did. She knew I'd never listen to it. But I put it in when I picked her up for the next date.
Some bluff. Not. Ended up listening to it non stop for over a month. Love it and her very unique tones. Brilliant timing and delivery.
But, the CD gift that hooked me on KD was a collection of duets with my beloved Tony Bennett. Just brilliant trick and I am glad I fell for it.
I've been a fan of hers since she started in country many moons ago. Just an insanely powerful singer.
Her vibrato is like silk. Check out her songs "Save Me" or "You're Okay".
I’ll check it out!
Great song. I can listen to this song with almost anyone singing. This song really reaches for heaven and takes you almost to the gates.
Canada so proud of K.D.
Loved your reaction!!! I would suggest that you listen to her and Roy Orbinson sing Crying.
They are magic together!
It's the kd Lang rabbit hole...see her live doing cover for tonight Mitchell...amazing fave song in the world and she did beyond excellent
I have had the great pleasure to see this amazing lady live several time! K.d. Give ZERO poor performances! She in incredible! Other songs constant craving, crying, miss chateline, the air that I breathe, helpless, trails of a broken heart, and so many others! Love your reactions Britt! Great insight and so adorable! Keep it up!❤
this rendition has always moved me.....affect has an effect!
Check out the Cleveland Roy Orbison tribute of Crying, absolutely mindblowing!
Just remember this is LIVE.!
k.d. lang ❤❤❤❤ (correct spelling)
I first remember her on PeeWee’s Christmas Special singing Jingle Bell Rock
Leonard Cohen asked ppl to stop recording this song as he believed kd's version was the quintessential one.
Look up her recording of the song Lock Stock and Teardrops. It’s as country as can be but oh my goodness !!!!
This video of K.D. Lang is beautiful, and soul-touching. And, if I may, so was your reaction. Thank you. 🤗
My pleasure 😊
KD Lang is a legend❤
So happy that this song is your introduction to k. d. lang, a truly blessed Canadian singer! Leonard Cohen wrote the song and enjoyed all the renditions but said he enjoyed hers as his favorite. R.I.P. Mr. Cohen.(Another fantastic Canadian)
Love your reactions, you absolutely must be the top reactor on UA-cam, if not now, soon!
Cheers from Juneau, Alaska❄️
TOTALLY AGREE! This song resonates to the deeper parts of our soul. The words themselves stand alone.
One of Canadas most loved musical icons listen to her version of Crying.
KD has a beautiful signing voice, glad you like it! Amongst other great Canadian voice you probably heard Céline Dion "My heart will go on" before but I bet you never heard Devin Townsend "Kingdom" his range is truly impressive! "Deadhead" live is another of his song that sound so good, I'd love to hear what you'd think of him.
I'll check it out!
Britt- If you have time, listen to Roy Orbison and kd do a duet with “Crying”. Absolutely beautiful. Roy’s voice at the end might just bring a tear to your eye.. Thanks for considering..
she was a big bone girl from southern Alberta....that's the way i remember KD introduce herself to the world back in the day!
I remember her on aCanadian TV talkshow dressed up in a cowgirl outfit and singing country songs, and pretending to be Patsy Cline reincarnated... her version of Crazy was amazing.
🇨🇦❤️ Still go by Cohens house and visit his park and fav cafe each time I visit Montreal. Without fail. Never a big KD fan, but still remember her work boots and skirt she used to sing in. An original for sure. Credit due. 🇨🇦🙏
