Britt, I have a real soft spot in my heart for k.d. lang. A friend of mine went to a new high school in Alberta and she was very afraid because her previous high school had been really difficult. She had epileptic seizures, and for some reason, the teachers at her old high school would clear the classroom if she had a seizure, as though she had the plague. She had no friends. Not one. But she had her first seizure at the new high school, and when she opened her eyes, k.d. lang was holding her hand. And all the kids were there, and the teacher explained that it wasn’t anything to be afraid of. After that, she said kd took her under her wing and for the first time in my friend’s life, she had a group of friends. k.d. was considered very cool. I’ve never forgotten the kindness she showed my friend. And anyone who has heard her sing once can never forget.
What a wonderful story. Thank you for sharing it with us. I've always had the feeling that k d is a very kind, gentle and humble soul. Your story confirms it.
Great story. Sort of doesn't surprise me. I say that because, KD's singing just cuts into my soul. Tears stream down my face, while I gasp for air. I'm always amazed at the emotional control she must have to put that into the air and have it hit me like a big wave so hard that I can't control MY emotional response.
Her performance to open the Olympics in 2010 Vancouver Canada was another level. They had asked the songwriter, Leonard Cohen but he designated K D LANG as his choice. A Canadian written and sung by another great Canadian voice.
Her version of "Crying" at the Roy Orbison Tribute concert gave me the chills. k.d.lang - Crying ( Roy Orbison Tribute ) ua-cam.com/video/QgGLC3JLTuY/v-deo.html
Kd sang Happy Birthday to me in a bar she used to play at before the records and fame. We all knew just how beautiful a person KD is, and special voice from Consort Alberta. She is fantastic.
This was at the Juno awards ( Canada’s Grammys ) and Leonard Cohen was in the audience. He had been asked in 2010 to sing it at the Winter Olympics Closing Ceremony in Vancouver. He declined but suggested k.d. sing it. She has a tremendous range and power to her voice. Roy Orbison was so taken with her voice he asked her to record a duet with him of his hit “ Crying “. After Roy’s death she was asked to sing it again at a celebrity Tribute Concert for Roy. She bought the house down!
Apparently Bob Dylan got The Byrds together for the Roy Orbison tribute, personally I'd have paid double for a seat if they, well he, didn't bother going on, in fact I'd have paid double for a ticket JUST for this!
Britt, I'm glad you discovered one of Canada's national treasures in k.d. lang. In 2006, Leonard Cohen was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. k.d. lang agreed to pay tribute to the legendary singer-songwriter with a rendition of his beloved song, “Hallelujah.” She had never performed the song for Cohen and “was excruciatingly nervous” knowing he would be in the audience. After the song she received a standing ovation, and as the credits began to roll, she ran down the stage steps towards Leonard to offer him her reverence and appreciation. He rose to meet her and they warmly, respectfully embraced. During her world tour in 2008, lang gave a beautiful performance of the song backed by the BBC Concert Orchestra in a concert filmed at St. Luke’s Church in London. After hearing it Cohen’s partner, singer Anjani Thomas, looked at Cohen and said, “Well, I think we can lay that song to rest now! It’s really been done to its ultimate blissful state of perfection.” He agreed. Lang later sang Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” at the Vancouver 2010 Olympics Opening Ceremony. It was spectacular!
I will never ever in all my life forget her performance at the Winter Olympics. The beauty and power of her performance absolutely overwhelmed me. Maybe the closest to a spiritual moment I have experienced.
If you ask me, her version is the definitive version of this song. No one else will ever do it as well. Her performance of it at the Olympics some years back was absolutely amazing.
@@pamhunter-to4xs When kd performed this for Cohen at his CHF induction he effectively gave her this song. He said that she had "brought it to such a level of sublime perfection" that no-one else need ever sing it again. k.d. Lang is one of Canada's best unkept secrets in the music industry. Her range, her power, and her talent know NO limits. Her rendition of this at the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Opening Ceremonies was INSPIRING. Her song was the piece played when the "doves" were released, symbolizing peace. This is the best song for this tradition, and no one could have sung it better at that time than Lady Lang. I love her music, and she makes me proud to be Canadian.
kd lang is an amazing artist and you’ve chosen one of her greatest performances here. But there is so much more. Constant Craving, Roy Orbison’s Crying, The air that I Breathe are equally beautiful in her hands. But also experience some of her earlier songs: Tall in the Saddle, Bopalena and Miss Chatelaine show some of the range of this iconic singer. Thanks for this reaction and I hope you’ll continue to enjoy and react to more from kd.
He should have received the Nobel Literature Prize that Dylan(undeservedly) got instead. Listen to his song “the Future”. So many more. Who remembers BD lyrics?
You Must react to her best song by far imo., Constant Craving . Great video , catchy song and harmonies about the Buddhist circle of life and death . Released in 1992 , and never ever get tired of listening too . One of the most sublime vocals ever recorded in a music studio .
I have been listening to KD sing this song a lot lately, I mean a LOT! Not only is KD's performance exceptional, as is her talent, but the performance of the Manitoba Orchestra is also absolutely wonderful as well. You should check out KD's performance of Roy Orbison's famous song "Crying", at the Roy Orbison Tribute Concert from 1990. ✌️& 🫶 from 🇨🇦!
There were over 42 MILLION people around the world that watched this woman perform that song, LIVE and barefoot, in 2010. I was fortunately one of them. She has done a lot of other shit as well. She is worth a few more reviews from you. Thanks. You are real close to your 300,000 subs. You GO!
Her end credit song for the Bond film "Tomorrow Never Dies" was much better than the song they used for the opening, but Sheryl Crow was a "big name" and k.d was not. Another good one to check out.
I’ve always loved Lang’s take on the song. Literally everyone else sings it from a place of reverence and solace. She dares to sing it from the viewpoint of a defeated and heartbroken cynic. And it’s pure magic.
Hi, Britt. This is my first time commenting, and I have tears as I type. This song was one of my late husband's favorites, this rendition by K.D. in particular. He died a year ago, and we had an instrumental version of this played at his service. In an interview, Leonard Cohen said of all the musicians who had covered his song, K.D.'s interpretation was his favorite, and we can all see why. You brought back so many wonderful memories for me by selecting this. Thank you for giving me joy today. - Carla
Listening to that, it's hard to believe that Katherine Dawn started out as country singer, performing in cowgirl boots and a little Western skirt. Thank you so much for reacting to this performance, Britt. It's the perfect example of an artist "leaving it all on the stage." Every word, every note is given the time and attention it deserves. k.d.'s voice comes not from her chest voice or head voice, but from deep in her soul. This has always been on my list of Top 3 performances of all time and always will be.

The song’s author, Leonard Cohen, literally said that NO ONE else should “bother” singing this song now, because he loves how K.D. sings it, SO MUCH. I remember her on aCanadian TV talkshow dressed up in a cowgirl outfit and singing country songs, and pretending to be Patsy Cline reincarnated... her version of Crazy was amazing.
🇨🇦❤️ Still go by Cohens house and visit his park and fav cafe each time I visit Montreal. Without fail. Never a big KD fan, but still remember her work boots and skirt she used to sing in. An original for sure. Credit due. 🇨🇦🙏
We played this at my Moms funeral service, as she requested.
❤️
I was fortunate to see her live in a small venue in Melbourne Australia around 2011. She was absolutely magnificent!! We all just sat enthralled listening to that amazing voice. She was porn for the ears!!
Everything K.D Lang sings is an amazing take
Her range is amazing and she makes it look casual
She's has an amazing voice. You should check out her live performance (MTV unplugged) of constant craving.
KD Lang has a beautiful voice and can low and high notes. She was a backup singer for Roy Orberson and does one of his song. So Good. I also agrees with you on this song, this version is fantistic. I look forward to your reactions, you enjoy our older music and your appreciated. 🎶🎤👩🦳🫶👍🌟
