How we balanced a Sigma 18-35mm on a Zhiyun Weebill S - EPIC LONG STORY

- Well originally we thought this video would only be 5-10min but it turned into a beast. So bear with us as we found many issues along the way when balancing the Sigma 18-35mm on the Zhiyun Weebill S with a Lumix GH5S body. Things we learned along the way were that counterweights in various positions are an absolute must. Overall it's possible to balance this bokeh beast but it has some caveats or limitations.
Please check out Accent Fukuoka's UA-cam channel and give him some love as they have a great studio. If you're a BMP4K fan you'll enjoy his channel.

Amazing work bros! Such production quality wow! I wanna pair my Sigma gh5 combo with a weebil now
well I think you're GH5 is just fine, just a GH5S is pretty bad when it comes to hand held shots. But yeah maybe the gimbal will allow you to get some low to high angle shots that would be hard by hand. Keep it up as we love your channel man!
Good work guys!
Thanks man, we had fun making it but it's a long one...
Where in Fukuoka the best place to buy gimbals and accessories for dslr making videos..thanks!
dexter A you can go to Yodobashi but it’s pretty overpriced. Most of us shop online and get our gear sent in from sites like Alibabaexpress and B&H.
Thank you for making videos!
Can weebill s works with cannon 80d and sigma 18-35 ??
Mock_ Bird please I need someone to answer this question
I balanced my 90D with the Tamron 35 mm
@@1lovisions355 have you figured it out? If not I'm getting my weebill in a few days. I have the same set up 80d with sigma 18-35mm. I will try it out and let you know if you want.
Chris Jaime I haven’t seen it for myself yet but everyone with this combo reports no problems.
Chris Jaime Hi! how is the setup with the weebil s? Can it handle the 80d and sigma 18-35?
Thanks for the review. I was about to buy a Sigma until watching this. I'll just stick to using my 12-35 Lumix with my webill S. Seems like less of a pain.
I came to this conclusion also, it's not easy. Personally I'm using a Meike 16 or 35mm prime lens with a servo motor now.
@@StellerJayFilms I use Sigma 18-35 since 2 years now. Yes it is very heavy. Yes sometimes it is pain to work with. But I LOVE its quality. Theres nothing like it. Its a lens when you want that quality footage. I am using this lens on manual on my Fuji. You sacrifice weight and AF but you gain remarkable quality.
And yes I did purchase other AF lenses for my other needs but this one is a specialty lens.
Klasse gemacht gefällt mir außerordentlich gut LG.Pidi
we were able to balance his gimbal with the sigma mc11 and sigma 18 to 35 on the a6300 howevere these where our observations; the gimbal kept going into standby/sleep mode, the battery kept draining super fast (used up 2 bars of battery in less than 30mins, 2bars usually goes for 6 to 7 hours) and cause of the weight of the lens, couldnt balance it with the quick release plate, had to use the base plate itself.
Yeah it's probably way too much weight and as you documented the battery gets drained.
Mmmh I think this gimbal is at the limit with the BMPCC and the Sigma 18-35. Do you know any better gimbal for a heavier setup (BMPCC 4K, Sigma 18-35, Metabones Speed Booster, Cage, Mic, Monitor, Battery)?
New Crane came out, I think that's the one that would be best for this lens.
So is it necessary to purchase the counter weights. I have the weebill s and the entry level Canon sl2. Balances fine with my tokina 11-16 mm lens. I'm thinking of this sigma lens or the fixed 16mm but concerned about the gimbal not balancing at all with the 18-35.
Angel F yes! I’m using Meike cine prime glass glass with a follow focus motor and have a counterweight on the right side of my gimbal 100% of the time.
Hi Steller
Any chance you can show us balance Canon eos r with EF 24-70 on weebill s
sorry we don't have that camera in the shop. I wish I had every body on the market...ahhhh $$
It was so interesting watching you video looks like watching a TV show.
Subscribed literally for this 0:57 😂😂😂
Awesome thanks man!
Thanks for the video. Do you think this might work with the Ronin SC as well ?
Sorry man not sure...
Definitely not
where did you get that extra handle? the one right behind the camera
The handle information is in the description box below. But I believe you're talking about the tripod that comes with the gimbal but transforms into a handle.
Hey I'm a photographer and I'm planning to move to Japan how did you guys establish your business in Japan or did you get married and get your Japanese green card and then establish your business I'm super curious could you guys make a video or something thank you
well yeah basically it helps to be married so you can freelance and not worry about getting sponsored. Then as you build up clientele you can actually lean on your video/photo bizz. Hope this helps.
I like ur style :) thanks but gimbal not good I think for my sigma 24-35
It's just a little too heavy I think.
Do you think it will work with the canon sl2 + sigma 18-35?
Please ask in the forums of Facebook, maybe somebody will know.
StellerJay Films i already got ir bro haha it works perfectly. In gonna leave my comment here just in case somebody has the same question
@@marcoa.cortezano5214 superstar thanks! I've been searching for the answer to the very same question. SL2 and 18-35.
Marco A. Cortezano did you have to use counterweights?
@@marcoa.cortezano5214 did you have to have all of the equipment they did like the counter weight and small rig cage? I have the same set up
It took about 15 minutes for me to balance mine after shooting with my LUMIX 25mm f/1.7. Shoutout to Zhiyun for the auto tune feature.
Hello,
Could you try with Sony A6400 + Sigma 18-35 + Weebill S?
Thanks
would have been great
If it holds a GH5 ir can hold a A6400. Be safe and get a Ronin S
Sigma 18-35 on sony is AF works fast?
@@ybgaming07 yes, it's oke, if you use with MC-11 or Metabon mount
@@chilchil9466 okay but this lens if put on a6000 will be longer and heavy weight on front
Don't auto tune... You have to set those motor parameters after the fact. Auto tune is a good baseline.
Never needed to use any weights with my gh5s/speedbooster/sigma combo on weebill s, but then again I didnt use a cage like you guys
must be the cage
@Fabian Aerts yes, also if you remove the eyecup you get perfect balance with just enough clearance in the back
Has any of you balanced this rig with the Follow Focus Max?
@@kevinperelman I would love to know the same. I m having a hard time here hahaha
Yeah the cage really screws everything up. I actually bought those weights as I'm using Meike cinema lens now so it's a must to have on the right side of your gimbal.
Lens support...meh. It's more of an anti-twist. Your camera's mount isn't under "stress" with that lens...as you demonstrate many times with it unsupported.
yeah it's definitely a heavy setup for the body. But most who use the Sigma 18-35mm don't use rails so I think it'll be ok.
The sigma 18-35mm doesn't have a manual aperture, btw. It has focus, zoom, and an af on off switch. Your description of it at the end makes it seem more complicated than it is.
Thanks for your remark, let me clear that up : Like we mentioned this is the Nikon version of the lens, and for Nikon lenses neither the Viltrox nor the Metabones speedboosters provide any electronic controls ! So in our case it's full manual control and there is indeed a manual aperture ring on the adapter ... Of course if you use the Canon version you should have electronic aperture control :)
@@AccentStudio oh ok. My bad. I didn't see the adapter. Thanks for clarifying.
yeah I was kinda in shock as I had to go full manual out in the field in the blaring sun. But I feel this only makes us better as we have to fully go manual and learn how to film. Thanks for the comment!
yea this not a good representation, i can balance mine with no box around it
We tried but couldn't get it to balance right unless we used all those extras. Keep in mind I did have a cage.
StellerJay Films fair enough. I got it to stabilize with a single counterweight
Crazy cus I'm upgrading from 12-60 to 18-35
