It's pretty common with the EV's not sure about other cars. It's marketed as more humane and environmental. I suppose that depends on whether they are cutting down the rainforest to raise cattle to provide the leather or if they are just using the leather form cattle that we are going to eat anyway. I researched it a bit and found it hard to get a clear answer. I'm okay with fake leather if it performs well, but haven't experienced it for more than a test drive so I'm not sure. Nissan uses real leather in it's top trim Ariya and Volvo is using wool in some of its EVs. I do hope it's better than the vinyl we had in cars in the 70s. That stuff I do know.
Your question at the end, should it be more sporty? Definitely not, its a family SUV that will spend most of its life carting about kids and doing the shopping. So the word sporty shouldn't be anywhere near it because if manufacturers want to make something sporty they just stiffen the suspension until the ride is 💩 and that is not for this car or any SUV aimed at the average family
i was waiting for this car, however managed to pick up an EV6 single motor RWD GT Line demo for $64K and very happy with that - disappointingly the range lacks a single motor long range GT Line which is where I would have been looking
Great review. Would love to see this EV5 with 800V architecture option, ie for faster charging speed. Would then provide a good option for those who want something in between the EV6 and EV9 in size, but still a competent road-tripper - especially for Australian highways... Otherwise, Kia going from strength to strength
So, a real buyers advice is as follows: want to headache and a car + remaining balance for fuel/maintance - RAV4, want a better EV - Tesla Model Y or you just want a fwd EV...then this for you. Price respectively for low models NSW: ~47K / 61K / 57K (as Kia is absorbing the 4K on road to be under Y)
Additionally, RAV4 will have the least depreciation and likely the lowest insurance while the other two benefits from noveated lease. So, in reality, after 4 years, RAV4 is likely be the same 2nd hand price.
Thought it might be a bit cheaper out of China… for what it’s worth I drove 650km here in WA yesterday Perth to Carnamah and back) drove through multiple towns, didn’t see one car charger.
Were the headrests as soft and comfy as the EV9's? Could you car camp in it, as in does it have a camping or utility mode? Is there a pet mode? So am I correct then in thinking this isn't an eGMP platform car? I like it personally but looking forward to seeing what Hyundai bring out as their equivalent, suspect it will be just a little better in all areas well except maybe the headrests where Kia has nailed it.
Plenty of attributes but rated range is ~200w/km, My model Y is 153w/kw real world which about 10% off rated range. kia need to do a lot of work on efficiency. The bigger battery is required to compete.
Kia's, Chinese made EV5 rushed to market as opposed to the EV6 , 9 and 3. Lots of short comings , front wheel drive , efficiency , price and charging speed. This again could be a miss with stack of competition flooding into the market.
In my opinion, if EVs want to unseat Tesla, they need to move toward true Level 3 Autonomous Driving. I have driven the EV6 and the Model Y. The Model Y's auto-pilot is far better. I like the way Tesla shows in real time what's happening around you-whether it's pedestrian or vehicular traffic -- or construction cones. Other than that, the drive of the EV3 was a whole lot smoother and more comfortable to drive.
Toyota have sold boring to drive cars for decades, so this thing should appeal to big T owners who want an EV that isn’t a half-arsed afterthought like the bZ4x.
No. EV5 don't use BYD's electric motor. But use LFP battery pack from BYD for Chinese market. EV5 use SK on battery when they use NCM battery pack. I don't know if EV5 will only sale NCM battery pack to western world.
the ev9 is worse but everyone seems to like it, including my neighbor, when I follow him down our street, I can't help feeling -- 'this ain't no beauty'.
All these EVs will be next to worthless in a few years when solid state (S.S.) batteries are released. Chery just announced a 1500km range for their new S.S. EVs starting in 2026, and Toyota and Nissan won't be far behind. Everyone should hold off on buying EVs until then.
just like computers, always waiting for the 'new' model. I can assure you that you will be paying a premium for SS as manufacturers know people will be willing to pay top dollar for the latest and greatest, it has always been that way, that is how the world works. I bought an ev two years ago and now I can buy the same model for 20k less, however I have not been to a service station or a public charger in that time, plus the 'no pollution whilst driving' when picking up the grandkids from school.
LOL anyone who believes Toyota’s BS about solid state batteries is a fool. It’s yet another delaying tactic because they don’t want to build EVs. HyDrOgEn Is tHe fUtUrE 🥴
Nope. solid state battery will be applied to luxury models such as Genesis. NCM batteries will be apply to mid to large size EV from ordinary manufacturers. And Sodium batteries will be apply on small sized cheap EV. And range is not important in EV. Because you can just insert more cells to increase range. So 1500km range of EV from cherry is really nothing. And if you want to read solid state battery market, focus on Samsung SDI. Because they are the most advanced in terms of Solid state battery development.

Oh dear, those wheels.
And since when has vinyl seats been an upgrade?
Bloody vinyl from the 1970’s. Noooooooooo.
Since tesla, mercades and BMW all use it..

yes, the wheels are awful looking.. I can't imagine what a mess those wheels will be after a drive on a gravel road..
Mercades call it eco leather but it's vinyl
Please make a detailed comparison between this and the model Y. Plus a long term test of the Kia? Thanks

If the base EV5 starts at drive away $57k, I'm hoping the EV3 kicks off at under the $50k mark. Early 2025?
the first EV I'd ever consider buying... in the Air long rage trim.
Rage trim for you?😂😂😂

Why the bus angle on the turning wheel?!
Base model needs to be under 50k, at that price it would be a consideration, especial since it's built in china,
It's built in Indonesia or Korea
So the same applies to the Tesla, then?

Cheaper and nastier FWD platform, still very expensive. Next Model Y is going to beat the brakes off this
Yeah, when it finally launches in 2030 something...

We need it in Europe , AWD model under 60k euros . KiA EV5 should compete with new Tesla model Y .

That is 100% a road head cushion
KIA/Hyundai made really good EVs, with a great balance on NVH and efficiency; only to be let down by the widespread ICCU issues.
Their efficiency is terrible!

Like all others EVs, nowhere near the interior space and packaging a Tesla model Y offers.
Too bad it's not making it's way to the United States.
Im sorry, having driven it in person it is far apart from a tesla. And yes i was gonna buy EV5 but ended up buying a Tesla.
it is sold at half the price of the model Y in China(< $30k AUD)
All cars sold in China are much cheaper, only Tesla cars are similar priced.
It's sold in china? Where's the source?
2 minute noodle are very cheap over there too.
It’s also a cheaper built, completely different spec in China. Australia demanded significant changes to the car because it needs 5 star ANCAP here.
