1. Find a speed bump
2. Hit it at 80 mph
One time I did 88 mph, I landed on Apr 26 2019 and replied to this comment.
Best comments you two
3. Buy new upper strut mounts before the wife finds out...
I hit a frost heave that I didn't see, it was actually three in a row and I came down on my front bumper.
I did this and totaled my truck this summer, no joke, two trees, one street light out of the ground, a completely crushed truck and a broken arm later I’m fine. Was like an expensive roller coaster
The quick blue Subaru jumps over the lazy crest

Lots of good info here. But there's one question you didn't address- does rental car insurance cover broken suspension and snapped driveshafts?
Only if you *believe* in yourself
They only check the body you good fam
Ahhhh yes, rental car abuse.
Did you ever read that story in Road and Track (I think it was, possibly Car and Driver) about how they rented a Neon and put a Turbo on it and thrashed it rather thoroughly. You comment reminded me of that story.
Awesome, thanks for the tips! I'm going to go jump my moms chevy malibu off the hill by the high school.
The internet could also be called: "A place where teenagers get bad ideas"
Ah we were full of bad ideas before the internet was a big deal.
Sweet baby satan that escalated quickly
I've probably watched all of this guys's videos. He really know what he's talking about, articulates it like EL5. I could see this guy on TV or rally commentary
I lifted my hawkeye impreza and imediately took it to a 3 foot tall dirt jump on a dirt road near me. I got about 5 feet of air at 50ish mph and I broke a front strut after the 4th jump. Most fun I've ever had
Do you guys get some students that absolutely scare the s#!+ out of you and you wish they never showed up? I teach truck drivers how to drive and you would think driving at 60mph would be a walk in the park, but every day I wonder if today will be the last day of my life.

4 to 5 k a week that'll pay for a nice funeral! Only joking.

It's worth noting that you really want to be properly strapped in to a good racing seat if you are going to be jumping. Regular seat belts will let you float a little bit which means you are coming down hard when it lands.
And watch your head, you have a tendency to float all the way up to the ceiling. Not sure how I know this info.
@@SubaruWRXStiYamahaR6-AllGone haha I am quite short so that's never been an issue for me but I have seen people whack their heads and then slam into the seat. It's quity funny once the terror wears off.
@@matgee8892 Imagine some smack their head on the top so hard they knock themselves out as they land from a high speed jump!
That why I use my Performance Luxury Vehicle(PLV) also known as an outback, the plush leather seats are great :p
@@matgee8892 I'm actually pretty short too, but I launched a Toyota Tercel off a 8-10ft drop onto another road because my dumbass thought a 90° turn was a long sweeping turn. The fall I think saved me bc hitting the ground slowed me down instead of slamming into trees. Needless to say the lapbelt didn't do shit to keep me from flying up into the ceiling.
TLDR - funny thing was I landed on the other road, I didn't know was there, and was able to drive it straight home without a tow! Had a big ass chunk of grass flowing from my hood, with a bent frame, and that Toyota ran for another 2-3 months before finally the engine and transmission burst at the motor mounts.
Having jumped the 100 Acre Wood cattle guard three times now, I think the one thing I wish I would have known was that, as a novice with a novice caliber car, we're not going fast enough to worry about launching so hard we're gonna destroy our shocks. We've caught air every single time, sure, but the KYB AGX shocks we use have more than enough dampening to handle that load. Now, as we start going faster and faster and start sending it like the faster guys do, its something to consider, but suspension, handling, and braking upgrades should always come before go-fast bits
The best things to modify to actually go fast are the driver, chassis components, tires, and brakes.
High engine power output is nothing without control.
Good advices. Also, in a street car, if you find yourself airborne, you probably don't want to be and something's gone wrong. You're likely to notice this *when* your engine revs hard. Reflexes from boating serve well here, though, once you realize you're revving like that, you lift, try and orient, then get back on the throttle for landing, try and get your wheel speed in the neighborhood of where the ground is. This'll often mean a downshift and climbing revs, but it's gonna be instinct. :) (You want all the vehicle control options once you have them, in this circumstance. It's saved my car in the past, even if it's like, 'Yeah, now I'm the girl with the bent tie rod. It's not my fault!" :)
I must try it with my passat
good luck XD

Super grateful for this video. Would you be able to get into some more specifics? Would you be able to do a suspension setup video for jumps? Or is that to dependent on application and preference?
You're right, it is completely dependent on application and preference BUT the very general outline would be: If you're set in a good "normal" place, think about going up a little with the ride height, then also up a little with both compression and rebound settings. If your compression is too loose, it'll crash down and bottom out on the landing; if your rebound is too loose, it'll bounce like a pogo stick. It's all about trying to make it land smoothly and under control, front and rear, that'll take some testing and tweaking but the payoff is being able to stay flat over the crests and jumps without bouncing all over the road. Keep an eye on temperatures too, shocks will behave very differently when they're cold in the winter or hot in the summer.

That pitch adjustment during flight, at least mathematicaly is true, rapidly changing speed of rotating mass creates torque, that's how reaction wheels in spacecraft work. But does it really create significant enough torque in this scale an all ? Hard to tell.
Anyway great video.
It does work very well on RC cars. It should work atleast a bit on normal cars too.
Andis Jargans it’s very slight but is proportional to weight, lighter pro cars have a more pronounced effect but production cars usually are less vulnerable

Damn man. Sounds like a rly fun time ripping true a forrest like that
Imagine what a car with traction control switched ON would do once the driven wheels get airborn.
Wheelspeed will shoot up and the traction control will instantly start to brake those drive wheels while the car is still in the air. The car will land with the brakes applied to those driven wheels...
Conclusion: if you ever expect doing shenanigans like jumping your streetcar you better switch the traction control OFF.
" hopefully you have the skills to bail you out" LOL
I don't think my car or my spine would handle this, just going over a pothole at 30mph feels brutal

Always new techniques to learn, ❤️❤️❤️ from 🇵🇰🇵🇰
One small correction. On a dirt bike, in the air, the throttle drops the rear, it doesn't lift the front.
hmm.. brake then gas, trying to pitch up the nose before jump. Now I get a good reason to wake up real early and leave home at 3 am. I gotta try something I just learned.
Can a production car jump while drifting/sideways? Or does it do damage
Shit man only one way to find out
If you’re going to jump your street car, treat it like a trophy truck and press that clutch pedal in so you essentially land in Neutral to avoid detonating your driveline and once you’ve landed and regained control pop the clutch and get back into it. 🤙 rslly safe everyone
came here to learn how to charge my car’s battery, left going airborne in a subaWHOO.
Pretty sure the Dukes of Hazzard throughly covered this topic in the early 80's.
A friend of mine jumped a new 4 door wrangler about 3ft high with full throttle through the air.
When it landed one of the rear dampers bent and broke in half.
We removed what was left and were able to drive home ok.
Drivers who lift mid air . tends to get to end of rally more often than those who floor it all the time… its an huge shock for lower ball joints if any angle on steering, axles , shafts, clutch all take huge beating if you floor it on jumps..
Safest way is to lift 30m before jump, floor it instantly to get weight transfer on back of vehicle more than just driving full throttle , lift mid air till you are about to land, but floor it before the tires hit the ground or are just starting to touch, but before they grip… older cars with not so great antilag that will help allso with power out of the landing.

I am currently trying to pursue a career in rallying, but I'm having trouble getting started. My current plan is to work until I can afford to build my '02 wrx for the limited AWD class in the ARA. I would appreciate any tips or advice y'all have to share!
If you want to go racing now, we usually recommend buying your first car used, finishing a few rallies, and if you take decent care of it you can usually re-sell it for whatever you paid for it. Buying used is also about 50% of what you'd pay to build new. Like this RS, you could buy this for $10k and be racing this summer, do a few rallies, then re-sell it for $10k and build your turbo car. www.specialstage.com/forums/showthread.php?86384-2001-2-5RS-LOG-BOOKED-RALLY-CAR-OPEN-LIGHT-NA4WD-11k-OBO&s=d1ad2ee181c8e07e87e3333b23585ecc
@@Teamoneilrally Thanks for the advice! I will definitely be re-evaluating my plans for this summer.
In Dirt Rally you might fly a lot farther than you want to. Depending on the shape of the hill and your speed, you can *tap* the brakes right before the crest and basically glue yourself to the road. Helpful if you just never land the big one.
I remember my first jump in my 02 civic. I didn't realize I was jumping until the second or third time I hit the ground! Boy I was flying! Just concentrating on staying nimble I guess.
Okay I guess I'm ready to jump my 02 Corolla now
What a suspension are you running?
We've tried everything over the years, currently we're running Koni yellows on most of the rally school cars.
Just out of curiosity, what tires do y'all have on that Subaru? I've been looking for a cheap alternative to rally tires for mild rallycross/logging road fun.
Snow tires will be your best bet short of a rally tire. Something like a studdable snow tire with wide gaps and a strong sidewall. I heard the old Firestone Winterforce 1 was good for this, I've had decent luck with the General Altimax Arctic 12.
But in all honesty, you can get a used set of rally tires for under $200 if you wait long enough and look in the right places. I picked up some used Max Sport RB1 tires from a rallycross guy I race against (DOT approved too, I believe) for $150 still with some good tread left
@@finngurgens3264 Thanks for the reply dude, that's some great info. I plan on doing some rallycross this summer so I'll keep my eyes peeled for a used set.
Snow tires are a great solution, we run snows on most of the rally school cars all year round. Another great option is to buy used rally tires if there's a team nearby, once the perfect square edges get rounded off from a little use, the top teams swap them out for new ones.
@@Teamoneilrally Gotcha. Have you guys run into any problems with debeading or rapid wear when running snow tires?
Well one of the reasons they're at the rev limiter in the big leagues is that it keeps the nose up as much as possible. Hit the brakes up in the air and you're nose diving quite a lot.

The main thing you have to worry about isn't your orientation, it's your car bottoming out/breaking something on landing.
Most people would agree it's better to be on the road with a broken car than off the road in the trees

Heavy stuff falls the same as light stuff
I have wondered how accelerating or braking really changes the pitch of a car in the air. I mean, I'm not doubting it, if it does work that's really cool, I just wonder how it works, because it seems like it shouldn't.
It works basically on Newton's 3rd Law. If you spin your tires fast then the whole body would tilt in the opposite direction to the wheels. The same with braking but you are removing rotation from the wheel and that energy transfers to the body and react in the opposite direction again.
While some effect comes from the wheels, most of it comes from the rotating mass of the crankshaft and flywheel and the torque vector is dependent on how the engine is mounted in the car. While changes in engine rpm do have some affect, it probably only really matters if your jumping incredibly long distances (like 270 feet or whatever). The same principle is used to control satellite orientation.
