I wouldn't touch it, or even swap the engine. Just touch up the bumpers. It's a "track car", and that is a nice selling point. Maybe swap the turbo for a variable geometry turbo, rebuild the transmission with upgraded parts to handle the boost, and replace the rear bumper for a steel unit.

Try double-clutch when shifting gears. When you upshift, let rev drop a little while in neutral, then clutch in and engage next gear. On downshift, rev match while in neutral, then clutch in and slot in lower gear. That's how you drive cars without synchros or with damaged ones.
My uncle had an 88 930 turbo and that thing was insane. His was basically mint and had a bunch of period correct modifications to further increase power. I didn't think he'd ever get rid of it but after years of it being worth around $50K the air cooled market did what it did and he sold it for $150K
@@erikz1337 CCW's are a legendary, fantastic wheel. I agree with you. At least with this color scheme. A black or silver 911 with wide Fuchs looks pretty tasty. Tyler's gonna have $100k in this thing pretty quickly.
Your friendship w the car wizard brings me joy. Really enjoy you two. Oh and get it as back to stock as possible w whatever mods you’ll enjoy. Definitively “unrace car “ it!
"Double clutch" and that trans will not crunch. The syncros are toast in 1-3. Doing this means they don't need to "wind up" or down. I had to do it on a K27 turbo 1979 930 I drove for awhile. It still hauled ass.
Exactly. I was cringing a little asking him to double clutch it in my head. Spent a lot of my life driving big rigs and they aren’t synchronized at all
That thing is making me smile from the couch, I can only imagine how addictive that is. Absolutely insane, never sell it! Reminds me of a 1995 993 I drove once at 17…horrible clutch, batshit crazy at the rear and one of the best days of my life! Made even better by the fact I couldn’t believe the old guy let me drive it 😁
There's a reason the 930 Turbo was called The Widowmaker. LOL. That turbo is like an on/off switch. Imagine that thing kicking in when you're in a curve on a racetrack. Impossible to keep the back end behind you in that case. And Leonard's absolutely right -- you couldn't take a pristine, all-original '74 Carrera and do *anything* with it, other than keep it all original. But because this one was modified back in the day, you can do anything you want to with this car. A glorious opportunity!! I can't wait to see it when it's done!
The K-jet has a frequency valve which can reduce the head pressure on the fuel distributor, allowing the flapper to move more easily, thereby enriching the mixture. The frequency valve is also connected to a pressure switch. Setting the fuel mixture there won't necessarily fix the problem. You really need to check the control pressure at the warm up regulator first!! Lean out a turbo car too much, and you melt pistons.
Turbo engines on a NA gearbox usually drive like that due to lower ratio gearset and shorter final drive in a NA car. Turbo gearboxes have longer ratios to take advantage of the on boost powerband.
@@waynepantry7023 What? He's just pointing it out because Hoovie is talking about changing all of the components of the turbo, instead of looking at what the issue really is. There's no way Porsche designed what I was seeing for a power band in this video, that's insane. At the same time, you don't want to take ALLL of that old school, boost lag danger out of the thing by throwing in a brand new twin scroll or something of the sort... At least in my opinion. I think this was worth mentioning for sure, since his tranny is on the fritz already, he might just throw a turbo tranny in there and then not have to incur the cost of upgrading the rest. He can just work on freshening the engine and turbo up a bit, while getting the driveability he wanted out of a longer gear set. No need to be a child, Watson. He just saw you over there breathing out your mouth, and thought you could use an explanation.
If it was me, i would keep it has it is, fixing the minor issues, keeping the petina, and enjoying it, otherwise it might be a garage queen. Nice work Hoovie.
I have a uncle in Santa Barbra with a blue 70's 911 SC Targa. I got to ride in it as a teen. I used to have a 76' Porsche 914/4 back in the 90's. My 914 mechanic took me for a spin in an orange 911 Carrera that looked just like this one. I'm very excited to see how this rebuild turns out. I completely agree with the Boosted guy on changing the bumpers. Although I wouldn't change the engine or turbo if It were mine. The transmission needs some love. Thanks.
Back in 1987 I purchased a 1970 911 for 5k. It was like yours built for the track. It had a racing suspension and a roll bar. Racing seats and a 1974 2.7 engine that was massaged to produce 220 WHP in a 2300 lbs car. I kept that car since then. I was 16 years old when I bought it. Today is back to stock form and I must say that I am glad I stated that process 20 years ago, so it wasn’t that expensive to restore. However, I still have that 2.7 engine, but now it’s in a 1976 911. However, I would love to have that 3.0 turbo you have.
Keep the configuration as-is. Engine, ridiculous tail, melty bumper. EFI convert it to get the fuel mix under control. Modernizing the turbo is tempting, but that comedy lag and then stab is absolutely fantastic and EFI is the only way you're ever going to get that to be anything but temperamental.
Hoovie, I just gotta say that is one of the most gorgeous 911s I have seen and your plan is perfect. The wheels are perfect. The original bumpers will be perfect. A modern turbo and intercooler, perfect. Sell your other porsches, even Apollo before you sell this one. If you do, you will regret it.
Having owned more than a dozen Porsches, I would suggest keeping the original paint (only repairing and repainting any small areas with damage), rebuilding the trans, removing the front part of the roll cage and fitting comfortable, stock sport seats.
Definitely keep that turbo engine, it's a riot. Just do what needs to be done to get it comfortably road worthy, don't need it in pristine show car condition.
Porsche guy saying he can take 2k rpm off with a new exhaust and some tuning? It doesn't work like that unless the exhaust he has is incredibly restricted
Way back when those cars were new on the lot, one was "borrowed" for a test drive from a dealership in the Charlotte, NC area. Later that evening/night it became the focus of a two state high speed chase in which I, as a small town LEO, took part.... Along with SC State Troopers in 5.0 Mustangs and Sheriff's Deputies in Chevy Cameros. My department, at the time, was equipped with Ford Crown Victoria "Interceptors" which were left far behind by all the other vehicles mentioned above....So we said screw it and broke off from the "Tail End Charlie Position" and returned to our duties in town......And the 911 easilly smoked all the Mustangs and Comeros. We never did find out what happened to that Porsche but I strongly suspect it became a drug runner's favorite car on the I-95 "Cocaine Corridor" of the era.
I can believe it. Even the lowly early NA cars are far quicker than they have any right to be. Those Porsche engineers totally nailed it. The balance of those cars is unbelievably good. When the turbo models first arrived they were just ridiculous, there was no keeping up with a well driven 930, even the big fast exotics got left behind when the roads got twisty. And well, Porsches reputation in motorsport speaks for itself. They've won pretty much everything that's worth winning multiple times, and continue to do so.
@Martin I, and other LEOs of that time, also thought "Chop Shop Bound" or even that it was destined for an overseas possibly Middle Eastern port of call.
@@theParticleGod Why make sure you're going to have to get into a chase, when you only have the possibility in another car? It's not like there aren't other options that a drug runner could afford to soup up to leave stock police cars in the dust.
From those of us who will never own or even such a car and can only dream, much envy and yet appreciation for you sharing it with us Hoovie. You are an exceptional entertainer. You also illustrate how a person like you can make the right kind of friends who can do what you can't and together can make great things happen. I've been fortunate in that regard with my "tank" and retro 1909 Hardley Davidson motorized bike (a ton of friends' talent and volunteer work). We built these from scratch (sort of on the bike). Humble but still satisfying for an ordinary person.
I don't know why you want to re-do it when it's all together and driving fine as it is. I could see maybe adding some kind of ducting or cooling to address the melting bumper, and also I think it would be a good idea to modernize the turbo so that the boost comes on earlier and smoother. Also I have to say I did prefer the 5 spokes you had on in the intro, they suit it much better. Those new ones look too bling on it.
I had an 84 930 from Canada with the long gears and watching your face when the boost hit brought back a ton of good memories. Love these old air-cooled Porsches!
OMG. I've driven turbos before and the boost was awesome, but I've never seen it kick in like it does in your Porche. I've heard it's crazy sudden, but ... holy cow ... that's crazy! 😳
Air cooled Porsches have always been my all time favorite cars. Absolutely beautiful styling. I would’ve definitely kept the aftermarket wheels. It gives it a much faster and aggressive look.
I agree on the wheels. Keep the period correct ones but PLEASE put the others back on. Fix: Trans, engine drivability issues, wiring, touch up the bumpers, and dress up the interior.
Every day a 911 gets put back onto its Fuchs rims is a good day. Seeing how relatively shoddy the interior looks, I would probably de-race the car too. If it were me, I probably wouldn't go for Pascha seats but rather for those cool, late 70s/early 80s leather + plaid cloth seats they had back then. They kinda looked like the plaid seats you'd get in early Golf GTIs.
Leave the bumpers and whale tail, they look great, especially with the Fuchs wheels. Not sure why you'd change those...Color is awesome, and the paint does not look bad a t all ! Just do the wiring and trans and better seats and drive it and enjoy !
In a vacuum or on a more recent 911, the newer wheels look far better to my eye. However, in context the period-correct look superior . Nice. David the Wizard is a gem on every level.
You might want to try double-clutching during shifts, it'll likely help with the grinding. Push the clutch pedal in- shift to Neutral- release clutch pedal- push the clutch in- then shift to your next gear. I used to have an old fox body LX 5.0 Mustang that had a bad 2nd gear synchro and double-clutching definitely helped. I'd probably try to avoid downshifting if you can.
Leave the body alone! That was the "love at first site moment!" I agree with so many of the comments. Fix the broken stuff and interior and enjoy it! We are going to ❤ to see the car done! ENJOY!
I'm only a couple minutes in and you started the car... And that idle is the perfect low pitch for my subwoofer to completely shake the floor of my house. It sounds amazing.
YES YES YES! I haven’t started the video, but yes save it. That thing is amazing and one of my absolute fav cars on the channel. Keep it orange though! That paint is 🔥!
Of course things are working out, they’re Porsches. 😄(I’ve been driving mine for 14 years) I have the same quite valuable sport seats in my 924S…I got them for free from a parts car. 😎 Very much approve of the Fuchs
I work at a porsche dealership, honestly I'd recommend a porsche classic certified dealership, they do restorations of classic porsches, that'll probably be your best bet at finding parts, since porsche has a supply of original parts and if they don't have one they will make it.
The boost is comedy gold, the period correct wheels are great. Nice that you got your "buy a bunch of car repairs, have your screws turned for free" punch card cashed in 🤣 I'd keep it mostly the way it is, don't go crazy with paint or erasing patina. Ceramic coat that patina.
Keep the IROC style bumpers, impact bumpers (bleh). turbo updates are great, brother has a 930 with the upgrades and the powerband is a bit lower RPM but still feels awesome on boost. $20k is a good price if it doesn't creep up...in the P-car world it always creeps up :D I love narrow body P-cars with extra power...I'm a 914 guy making a 230hp narrow body and the Porsche tax is real!!!
I want to thank you Tyler for sharing this and hope you read this. Its always been my dream to own a 70s carerra mainly a 73 but I wouldn't be picky at this point but being on a pension of under 700 a month yeah that dream is going to die with me. Just no hope in that coming true. I guess if there is one just one miracle I could ask for that would be it but miracles seem to be in short supply but taking me along for a ride in this video was enough to make me tear up in happiness so thank you for sharing this truly meant alot to me. God bless you Tyler and the hooptie fleet and your family. Thank you
You could try double clutching it to sync up the gears till you get the transmission rebuilt or replaced. Looks and sounds like a cool car with a great factory engine swap to make a lesser version up to the car most can't afford.
I gotta say, I liked the other wheels more, something about them just screamed "badass". Also, I like the body as-is, just upgrade the interior and make it more comfortable.
I personally love this Porsche 911, and the car may need some work but it’s nowhere near a ratty car by any means. You have to finish this build and keep it.

That "hammer hit" turbo leap was the reason those T930's killed so many drivers. Dangerous but what a machine.
My uncle had an 88 930 turbo and that thing was insane. His was basically mint and had a bunch of period correct modifications to further increase power. I didn't think he'd ever get rid of it but after years of it being worth around $50K the air cooled market did what it did and he sold it for $150K

Such a great car - and replacing the wheels has been such a leap. This little project looks so full of promise. Thanks.
Those are CCW forged wheels he replaced. The Fuchs replicas are a downgrade technology wise, unless he spent money on AWS Forged Fuchs repros.
I liked the old wheels better, Fuchs wheels look too oversized
@@erikz1337 CCW's are a legendary, fantastic wheel. I agree with you. At least with this color scheme. A black or silver 911 with wide Fuchs looks pretty tasty. Tyler's gonna have $100k in this thing pretty quickly.

@@j.reddout My bad. They look similar. Fiske's are amazing wheels too.
The way the boost hits looks so fun 😍. In my opinion, just leave it and do a little touch up so you can continue enjoying it like the 348.
Still though Lennard will make this "orange" really awesome..
Your friendship w the car wizard brings me joy. Really enjoy you two. Oh and get it as back to stock as possible w whatever mods you’ll enjoy. Definitively “unrace car “ it!
One cannot stop falling in love with the widowmaker!
yes!
Keep the 3.0 Turbo! Maybe replace the turbo with a modern unit that spools faster.
Half the fun and the danger was how these spooled 😂
The car is beautiful as is! Paint correction, ceramic wax and done with the body... bumpers, turbo correct, transmission, tune and it's my dream 911.
Spent a lot of my life driving big rigs and they aren’t synchronized at all
You’re granny shifting not double clutching like ya should
@@RyCorp77 now me and the mad scientist are gonna have to rip apart the block and replace the piston rings you fried!
I was thinking the same thing. STOP Grinding that gear,,,, and just double clutch it.
@@chillywilly521 It's a pain and slow, but slowing the syncros down will work. CDL drivers have to do this since thoses trans do not have syncros.
Grew up in the 80s and always loved the big spoilers on these. I’d keep it if it were mine, but it yours…have fun with this project.
That thing is making me smile from the couch, I can only imagine how addictive that is. Absolutely insane, never sell it! Reminds me of a 1995 993 I drove once at 17…horrible clutch, batshit crazy at the rear and one of the best days of my life! Made even better by the fact I couldn’t believe the old guy let me drive it 😁
the wizard laugh when he told Tyler he has spent over $80,000 in his shop this year was priceless!
Tyler probably makes 800k with wizards expertise
The Fuchs look perfect...I love how it breaks the tires loose on boost
Old tires

Happy to see Tyler came to his senses and decided to keep the Turbo engine! That thing is insane! It's worth every cent to make it better! 😁
:)
So swapping to the turbo transmission would give hoovie all the drivability he is looking for without having to touch the engine or turbo
That boost is crazy no wonder the gearbox is screwed, that's freaking brilliant. Don't change a thing...... Except maybe the gearbox.
Thanks.
neat
Back in 1987 I purchased a 1970 911 for 5k. It was like yours built for the track. It had a racing suspension and a roll bar. Racing seats and a 1974 2.7 engine that was massaged to produce 220 WHP in a 2300 lbs car. I kept that car since then. I was 16 years old when I bought it. Today is back to stock form and I must say that I am glad I stated that process 20 years ago, so it wasn’t that expensive to restore. However, I still have that 2.7 engine, but now it’s in a 1976 911. However, I would love to have that 3.0 turbo you have.
nice
Keep the configuration as-is. Engine, ridiculous tail, melty bumper. EFI convert it to get the fuel mix under control. Modernizing the turbo is tempting, but that comedy lag and then stab is absolutely fantastic and EFI is the only way you're ever going to get that to be anything but temperamental.
The comedy lag is fun only in a straight line. They nick named these widow makers.
Most deaths happened on exit ramps iirc...
replace the fugly melty plastic bumpers with good old fashioned chromed steel, bringing it to European specs.
@@alk3myst Yep, hit that boost in a turn and it's swapping ends.
Wizard is such a gentleman. He's so knowledgeable and really does add enormous depth to the channel.
That boost is insane when it hits, lovely sound of the engine.
This could be the best (meaning smartest) Hoovies Garage episode ever!
:)))
@Martin if you're not planning to stop, it doesn't matter if the car is stolen.

Of all the cars that have been in your fleet, this is my favorite. Just seeing and hearing the boost come on is glorious.
It’s beautiful but I liked the other rims more but I understand you’re going with the time period correct rims!
Duuuuide..I'm in love.. you put those wheels on it and. It all just comes together!!
I think this is my favorite car in your whole fleet.
I had an 84 930 from Canada with the long gears and watching your face when the boost hit brought back a ton of good memories. Love these old air-cooled Porsches!
Dammit now I'm back in my 930 obsession phase almost. That thing rips.
My 930 never disappointed!!! ALWAYS an adrenaline rush!!!
Never change that engine and turbo combo. It's perfect. Maybe just some modern management.
OMG. I've driven turbos before and the boost was awesome, but I've never seen it kick in like it does in your Porche. I've heard it's crazy sudden, but ... holy cow ... that's crazy! 😳
That's because the old tires had no traction
That’s why the old one with that engine was called the widow maker
Thank god you put some Fuchs back on that car, looks 10x better, looking foward to the ducktail
Nah your dreaming, the period ones make it
My friend In high school had 1 of these i had a camero.. Man we had fun in that Porsche
DANG OL CAMERO
This is a gorgeous car, you really ought to keep this one permanently. What a classic Porsche vehicle.
I’d tune it so that the boost comes on earlier and smoother and call it done. Take it out to the track and break it like Apollo 😂🔥
This gets me excited to get my 930 finished. Mines actually on its way to paint now and yes…the prices are crazy.
Its the synchronizers. "Double clutching" is a term from the movies to sound technical.
I asked for it, and I got it! MORE PORSCHE CONTENT!! Love xxx

This is a rebuild that will definitely not lose money, even without the UA-cam videos.

You could try double clutching it to sync up the gears till you get the transmission rebuilt or replaced. Looks and sounds like a cool car with a great factory engine swap to make a lesser version up to the car most can't afford.
I gotta say, I liked the other wheels more, something about them just screamed "badass".
