Hi, yesterday I explained the Holy Trinity to my students thanks to this video. Linguistic is very interesting and important. So thank you 😊 Have a good day!
Even with translations - into Latin then several of the European languages finally into English of a number of different times (years) - the first verse of Genesis conveys the same basic message. Please forgive my rather casual translation; "The first thing, God the ultimate one' made the entire set up. All of it." As a Christian, I have no quibble with that. As a human - Christian - of the 20th Century (western calendar, not Hebrew) I have noted various translations in English (starting in the 16th Century) differ in places. This is mainly due to the change of meaning of words in English and not any problem translating the Hebrew. Too many folks cannot translate 17th Century English to current English. Good on you! Real information of any sort gives glory to the one. Keep it up!
Some of the translation problems are the result of antiquated English. Long ago, "the heavens" referred to the sky, but "Heaven" (capital H) referred to the dwelling place of G-d. "The earth" or "earth" referred to the ground, specifically soil/dirt, but "Earth" (capital E) referred to the planet. This was truly fascinating. I can't wait to learn more. Very grateful to you for providing this!
Hi Llan, Shalom 🙏 I'm looking forward to watching your channel grow and participating in the learning modules as you present them. I'm currently studying /learning the Hebrew language and understand that there are many layers to work through. Having several transliterated versions as well as the JPS Hebrew-English TANAKH תנייך ; I'm keen to gain a more in depth understanding in this amazing language. As a note: I've picked up in my research (please don't ask me to recall where) that the use of את throughout scripture is to remind us that Yehoshua Ha Mashiach; being the א and the ת is the beginning and the end; "the first and the last". Isaiah 48:12 "I AM the א and the ת" says the LORD. Revelation 1:8 Please keep these highly informative studies coming, we all need to keep in mind; we are one flock with ONE Shepherd. God bless 🙏 💝
@@TheBibleInHebrew ok thank you. Calling you Dr Ilan was my way of saying you're a great teacher. I've been waiting for something like this all my life. Thank you.
This is extremely good. Your way of teaching is clear and methodical, easy to comprehend. It is also helpful to remember that the whole "creative" discussion in chapter 1 is written from the point of view of an observer(s) on earth (had they been there), and having no knowlege whatsoever of the processes involved. Thus an overview of what took place in simple terms rather than a scientific dissertation.
Hi Ilan, I really enjoyed your video. One thing about “et;” Et isn’t useless; it identifies an object for the action of the verb. The reason it’s useful has to do with what you mentioned about the order of subject and verb in biblical Hebrew as well as the fact that biblical Hebrew didn’t break up sentences in the way that we are used to (this is true both in written and oral contexts). This flexibility of word order can be very poetic, but the object of the verb can become obscure. Et defines the object and allows it to be placed anywhere in the sentence - and still understood as the object. For example, you could take the first sentence of the Tanach and write it: Et haShamayim bara Elokeem beResheet v’et haretz - or other variations - and they could still be readily understood; this is not the case in a language like English. Not that this sounds better, but it is one of the great beauties of Hebrew that sentences can be constructed very flexibly for emphasis and poetic impact and the object is not mistaken for a verb.
Thanks for the comment. There are some examples in the Bible where 'et' is useful to understand the meaning, but they are few and far between. In most cases, it can be dropped without any major impact on comprehension. Also note that in Genesis 1:1, which has normal syntax, there are two 'et', so it's double redundancy.
As I listened to the explanation of Et, it reminded me of o (wo) in Japanese which also identifies the object and allows flexible word order. Thanks for that great first lesson of the first of the Bible, and for the nice follow about Hebrew grammar from ericgoldstein4734.
Exactly what I’ve been looking for! To connect the original text to my studies. I’m a KJV gal as my source, I only use other English translations as references. They take out or replace verses, completely changing the meanings…I love diving deep into the scriptures. Please keep doing these videos 💯❤
Thank you, Ilan, for this fascinating contribution. Like many others who have commented, I come to your teaching from the Christian tradition. Please do continue your work. You are touching and enriching lives. With gratitude.
Plural for the name of God makes sense with the doctrine of the Trinity. Additionally, in older English, "the heavens" plural usually refers to the sky, vs heaven where God is. So the translation into English is remarkably quite good. Japanese also reads left to right, and has the words "wa" and "desu ka" that can feel like "et". Fascinating stuff!
The equivalent of “et” in Japanese would rather be “o”, to mark the direct object of a sentence. However, in Japanese, “o” comes after the word and cannot be omitted in the standard language.
Just so you know... that plural word God, that you think proves the trinity, in Hebrew gets translated in the Septuagint (the one that Jesus used) to SINGULAR God. Greek word "theos" g2316, look it up... jus sayin....
The middle word in the middle of the 7 words, את . Aleph and teth, is the central word. The most important. The Alpha and the Omega, the first and last letter of the Hebrew alphabet, the whole Torah. It is the Mashiah who links heaven and earth, in the 2nd part of the verse. Thanks for the great teaching 😊
Thank You! I appreciate your sharing 😊 You interpret better then the scholars. I am understanding and getting a better perspective on what GODs Word is really saying. This is true Bible Study 🥰
Thank you so much for starting this channel, so that more people, me including, can learn the Hebrew language. Just a little side note, languages that are written from right to left also include Chinese, that’s how it’s used to be, and can still be written that way if one chooses to. But yes, since the world followed western standards, since 60 years ago, we mostly write from left right😅.
Thanks for the comment and your kind words! Arabic is a major language with ~380M speakers and Urdu has 230M speakers. Both are written from right to left.
@@TheBibleInHebrew I think the OP, in the final sentence, meant 'we' as in 'we Chinese' rather than 'we humans'. Btw, the word 'sky' can certainly be plural in English. It can be singular or plural, depending on the speaker. 'The skies are blue' is perfect English, as much or more than 'the sky is blue'. 'In the beginning G-d created out of nothing the skies and the ground' is how I will think of Genesis 1:1 from now on! 😊
This was great! I like how you broke it down using simple words. I had a thought about אֵת (et); since it is spelled with the first and last letters of the Hebrew alphabet, it could be translated as "all". Also, if the vowel chosen for B' is traditionally "Be", but with a change to the vowel it could be "Ba", meaning "when" (this coming from a Goya, who is definitely NOT a Hebrew scholar), making the opening "When God began". This would (to me) make the beginning sound more indefinite, indicating the external nature of God. So, I encourage you to continue through the Torah. I think you could make even B'midbar and Vayikra more interesting as "Etz Hayyim Torah and Commentary" did for me. I'm just a simple Christian trying to rediscover my Jewish roots.
I read your comments with interest. I am a Muslim male from Azerbaijan. Your thoughts about et is indeed reasonable. I was confused when I read 1-1 to Jews on TikTok, they said it is not "when God began to create" but "in the beginning" in a humiliating way. The issue is that I read it from US printed Torah in 1962 which is for sure was printed by approval of Jews Publication Society of the USA. The same book had footnote where I read to them "or in the beginning". Still they were not happy with that and blamed me that as if it is even not the Torah at all. Now, however, your explanation confirms one more time that the translation as "When God began to create" has the right to exist or me be the true translation. Because when we say "in the beginning God created" we may understand God was not there before He created. But when we say "When God began to create" we can clearly understand God was there before He started to create the Earth and Heaven. Now your interpretation about et as first and last letter of Hebrew then it might indeed can be understood as "all". Well I wrote this to your goodness because I found you as a good Gentlemen. Wa Aleykum salam.
I have been trying in vain to see your next video, and I’ve come to realize there is no next video. I hope that I’m wrong about that. But if I’m correct, would you please do another video on the next part of Genesis one I will certainly be a faithful follower.Bob Bates
Ultimately, I did in fact, find your next video and the one after that and the one after that and Man are they good. Praise God and keep doing what you’re doing. My wife and I are both learning to speak to Hebrew because of you. Thanks again, Bob Bates.
You can also refer to the sky as skies (more often in the daytime) or heavens (more often in the night) in English, and using plural verb firms, eg the skies were blue, the stars shone in the heavens. I'm loving this and looking forward to watching more. Thank you for explaining everything so clearly.
14:50 originally, in old English, the word Heaven could also mean just the sky, it’s modern differentiation of sky, space, and divine realm that gave Heaven a connotation of Paradise to the word.
You are right, and it's the same in Hebrew. However, this video is made in modern times for people with current understanding of the world and the English language. And the bottom line is that the reference in the verse is more to the physical aspect, which people today may not associate with the word "heaven".

You are totally right!
Do you mean complex as in a verb, adjective or noun sense? It's not complex in a proper perspective. Common sense.

This was great. I love seeing the Hebrew and how it translates. Your explanation is very clear and helps us non-Hebrew speakers. It also helps us to understand that very few non-English languages will translate directly into the equivalent language that we would write.
Very interesting. Thank you for these videos. I am fascinated by the Hebrew language and learning how to speak the Bible in this original way, the meanings, etc. I serve the Lord Jesus, and I love the Word of God! I also enjoy learning Bible history, the Tanakh, the origins of mankind and everything The Almighty Father God-Elohim says in His Word. God's Word is the final authority! I am now subscribed to your channel.
I'm happy that you find my videos interesting!
Thanks!
Thank you!
Much appreciated!
Extraordinary! Thanks so much! I’ll be happy to donate here or via Patreon for such fantastic content.
Please don't stop. I love the Jewish people and the Hebrew language.
Your vídeo is like a GOD sent for me.
I LOVE GOD, and to be able to learn to read the Bible in the original language is wonderful.
GOD BLESS
CHRISTIAN
Thank you very much for this video. They're very useful. I love the way you speak and you give information. Please continue, don't stop.
Thank you. You seem to have rare skill and balance. I am a native American English speaker without any special linguistic skills. I think you have found the right level at least for me. Please continue. Again, thank you!
Thank you for sharing your language with us English speakers. I really appreciate the insight into Scripture by a study of your beautiful language.
Glad I have found your channel! Great explanation. Thank you
thank you so much for this series. I look forward to many many more videos
I have been studying Hebrew characters and culture for many years. This is an excellent video and I am learning a lot from it. Thank you! Subscribed.
5:54 if anyone is wondering. The "of" came from a term called "construct chain." It occurs when two nouns stand together.
1. Head (noun)
2. With the definite article "the" prefixed to the word Government (noun)
It reads, "head of the government" or "the head of the government."
Thank you so much! I was taking an online course in Hebrew to learn to read the Bible but I had to discontinue after a year. Your explanations are wonderful and I am so looking forward to future videos.
Thank you so much for your kind words!
I hope you'll find my new upload helpful.
That video is certainly a great treasure. Please do not stop making your videos, I am leaning Hebrew at the moment and videos like that are so rare on the internet. This video is amazing. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. Greetings from Brazil
Thank you for this very heartwarming comment!
I'm working on the next episode right now.
Thank you very much for the video, I look forward to watching more 😊 The bible is the most wonderful book I've ever read, it amazes me every time and I'm thankful to be able to understand it more deeply. God bless you, brother ❤
Thanks so much. You make it so clear and simple. So insightful. Wonderful
Congratulations and many thanks! Extraordinary video that has added gratefully to my initial steps in Hebrew! God bless you!
Thank you ABA for Illan and family. This site gives us additional insight to His Word. Especially how to speak it properly.
All of it."
As a Christian, I have no quibble with that.
Keep it up!
Fantastic teaching…watched over and over! I hope you continue… please!!! Thank you!
Great lesson. I have been taking modern Hebrew and this just helps so much. I love this language.
Very grateful to you for providing this!
what a precious channel I found,thanks sooooooo much😊
Thank you so much!
Wonderful explination and lesson, much appreciated. I look forward to learning more from your videos.
I am Indian Christian❤ blessings❤ Elohim❤ Yahweh❤ chose we people to know HIM and worship Him❤
Hi Llan, Shalom 🙏
I'm looking forward to watching your channel grow and participating in the learning modules as you present them.
Isaiah 48:12
"I AM the א and the ת" says the LORD. Revelation 1:8
Please keep these highly informative studies coming, we all need to keep in mind; we are one flock with ONE Shepherd.
God bless 🙏 💝
Great work, Dr Ilan. Please, will you discuss the entire Tanakh in this format? Shalom from Nigeria.
Thank you! Wow, Nigeria!
I'm not a doctor, though :-)
Let's do Genesis 1 first, and see where it takes us.
@@TheBibleInHebrew ok thank you. Calling you Dr Ilan was my way of saying you're a great teacher. I've been waiting for something like this all my life. Thank you.
This is one of the most heartwarming comments anyone wrote!
Thank you!!
Such a great lesson. From Cambodia
This is really exciting!
Never expected to get a comment from Cambodia!
Keep it up! Amazing blessing that you are giving to the world!
Thank you so much for this video. It’s great! Will definitely be going through your whole series.
Thank you, Ilan, for this fascinating contribution. Like many others who have commented, I come to your teaching from the Christian tradition. Please do continue your work. You are touching and enriching lives. With gratitude.
Thank you for the kind comment!
This channel is for anyone and everyone who wants to read the Hebrew Bible in the original.
@@yijianmou1325 Right, that's why I said the other words FEEL like et, in that you can drop them in casual conversation and still be understood.
Just so you know... that plural word God, that you think proves the trinity, in Hebrew gets translated in the Septuagint (the one that Jesus used) to SINGULAR God. Greek word "theos" g2316, look it up... jus sayin....
@@stevegold7307 Jesus spoke aramaic at the time. It was the apostles who used the greek translations in their letters.
It also makes sense from a polytheistic perspective, or a heinotheistic perspective like that of the ancient Israelites.

Thank you so much. I love the way you share your knowledge. I look forward to learning from you.
Thank you for explaining the first verse of the Bible in Hebrew. It was very informative, and I look forward to the next video.
I am from Indonesia. All glory to King Jesus the Messiah.
WOW ! I'm happy i found your channel. Thank you for your efforts. Cheers
This is amazing. Just wow. Thank you for this informative video. We want more. God bless you and your team. ❤
You are just genius! Helping me a lot with my study of messianic studies and my biblical Hebrew class. Thank you man ❤
Thank you
Greatful and appreciative to your kind teachings .

God bless you sir for your time to teach is not wasted you are a blessing to many.
Thank you for your kind words!
Thank you, brother. You are a fantastic teacher of this wonderful subject. Bless you.
Liked and subscribed. I'm teaching myself Hebrew and I printed out Genesis 1-3. This is excellent review for my understanding.
What a great video concept executed in such a nice and assailable way! Thank you for sharing this!
Thank you so much for the comment!
Nicely done. Very clear and thorough. BTW: Dutch has the word "er" which is also an "unnecessary" word, perhaps like "et"?
Thank for sharing!
Didn't know about this word (my Dutch amounts to a handful of words).

It will be uploaded as soon as it's ready.
May the Lord Jesus bless you

Thank you so much for your warm words!
I'm working now on my next video.
Thank you for sharing the knowledge of our language from the Torah.
Thank you for watching, and the lovely comment!
This is brilliant! Thank you so much, IIan! Clear and easy to understand.
Thank you!
Hopefully you can do the whole old testament like this ❤
Thank you so much 🙏🏻

Rosh in Hebrew means “head”, and figuratively: “beginning”, “the top of”, “in front of”, etc.
I couldn’t find any other meanings in the actual Bible.
Its a very interesting clarification of the biblical verses. I am eagerly waiting for the more scriptures to be explained. I wil give thanks to the Almighty god. For the lesson.

Genesis 1 is ELOHIM (Lucifer and the fallen angels).
They made this realm.
They made man in their image. (tares)
Man is an idol, a trap to hunt angels.
Genesis 2:7 the Lord God forms His representative in their system. (wheat)
One Gospel:
Gospel (GOOD ANGEL) of Reconciliation.
Jesus Christ came into THEIR kingdom
to reconcile fallen angels unto Himself.
We are the fallen angels (ELOHIM) kept in DNA chains of darkness.
If you do not confess being a fallen angel in Lucifer's kingdom, then you are an unbeliever.
Unbeliever = those that claim to be made in the image of ELOHIM(gods).
REPENT FALLEN ANGELS.
