- Al Kooper on living half a block from Jimi Hendrix and seeing him all the time on the street, playing on the Rolling Stones "You Can't Always Get What You Want" and adding a french horn to the intro, bumping into Brian Jones at a clothing store, sneaking tapes into Columbia Records, getting the call to play with George Harrison, and recording with him the day after John Lennon was shot.
Always good to hear from Mr. Kooper. Thank you.
A true legend of the music industry.
His memoir Backstage Passes and Backstabbing Bastards is a must-read for anyone who is interested in rock history.
Yeah, it is! I read the original version three times, and the updated version twice!
Fantastic book.
The Blues Project was/is one of my all time favorite bands.
Got to see him live and of course he was AMAZING
So glad Al finally got into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-it’s about time the Hall recognizes a true legend.
Agreed! He's one of the best!
Great story from Al...I had the pleasure of hearing many of Al's stories over the years...he has many! Great guy and great musician! In the studio, he comes up with his own brand of parts...and they all WORK!! (our producer in the MOSE JONES days)
Saw him.on 5th Ave one afternoon during the eighties. He's extremely tall. Very pleasant for a rocker.
This guy discovered the great Lynyrd Skynyrd in a bar called Finocino here in Atlanta and produced their best albums. That’s the big story to me!
This guy is RAD
Skynyrd and the tubes first album. Sonic master
Total legend I love the fact of him being friends with Jimi and Mike Bloomfield.
Also he has in the past stated one of his favourite bands was Free
agree LEGEND
I was very close to Mike Bloomfield and am sad to this day that he died as he did..Also Paul Butterfield, my son's father, and Richard Manuel. Soo much talent, soo much genius, such a horrific loss. My life totally unravelled. Hope they found peace💔
I could listen to me Cooper talk all day about his experiences with different individuals........I remember when John Lennon was murdered. I was watching Monday night football at cherry point n.carolina. what a tragic time. Great story THANKS
There seems to be no end to the stories he could tell!
@@TheWeeklyShowwithDavidJMaloney That was a long hard night after they announced Lennon was dead. I stayed up listening to Lennon songs and cried pretty hard. Still hurts.
Great interview
Thank you for the kind words!
I have always wondered about the french horn at the start of you can't always get what you want. I figured that there was a interesting story behind it.
Interesting to hear Al Kooper talk about his time in the UK. I find it interesting that he never crossed paths with another British music icon, John Mayall, even though they both spent a lot of time in LA as well. If someone knows otherwise, please chime in.
His Skynyrd stories are epic
Al knew The Who, suggested Skynyrd to open for them, and the rest is truly history
Al gave the Stones some Satisfaction :)
beautiful!
Wow! AL SURE HAS CHANGED!
I'd love to meet Al - he doesn't get the credit he deserves with what he did for Lynyrd Skynyrd
The FULL and UNABRIDGED interview with Al is live on our podcast! We had to cut a TON for TV. It's all back now! LINK: open.spotify.com/episode/3GaV4htoMLo6m1a5ukj0Z4?si=9QPD7PYCSLKZA7GOcnARxA

Legend
❤💪🏼🙏🏻
I've heard Ringo say many times that he was on vacation on a tropical island (can't remember which) when he heard the news about Lennon and flew to NY to see Yoko, so placing him at Georges house that night doesn't quite add up.
Reg Hooper is the MAN
I think his memory is a bit clouded? If you remember Ringo flew to 😮NewYork the day following Lennon’s murder, he had come from Some island in the Caribbean ,Al is reminiscing about the recording of all those years ago which happened months after the murder, actually the next year 1981, nice stories but maybe not the most accurate?
Memory, that fickle thing!
who is this cat in his pajamas?
Played with George the day after Lennon's death ? Gee, I wondered, how could Harrison be so cold ? Turned out Al got the date wrong. Perhaps more than 2-4 hrs sleep is required !
he looked like a Yemen arab in 60s now he looks like a Finn
So refreshing....

Brian Jones was no longer with the Stones when they recorded You Can't Always Get What You Want. He was fired from the band during the recording of Let It Bleed, having performed on only two tracks: playing autoharp on "You Got the Silver", and percussion on "Midnight Rambler".
