- Musician Al Kooper seems to have had a hand in every classic rock song ever made. He helped popularize the Hammond B3 organ as part of rock music, performing on recordings of Bob Dylan, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, and The Who. He was a member of the legendary Blues Project, and later founded the group Blood Sweat & Tears.

Al’s inclusive personality and creative imagination got him more work than his musical talent ever did. He seems like a great guy who is fine to have dinner and drinks with.

Child is Father to the Man is a criminally underrated album, but for a person who is a lover of music, it’s more than a top 250 album, it’s a trip.

Excelled as songwriter, producer, guitar, organ, piano player. Saw Al play in a bar in Atlanta, early 70s. Major talent!

I love Al Kooper, both as a musician / songwriter and as a raconteur, so this is not a dis, but he must have been smoking some heavy shit at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. I've seen video of Bob Dylan's performance with The Butterfield Blues Band and there was some serious booing going on.
There are seriously good reasons why Al made that comment .. 🤫

Al was a real stunner as a young man! He is still easy on the eyes as an older guy.

I'm a sixties musician and I think the Gary Lewis recording brought out everything good in the song - the
chord changes, the lyrics, etc. True, it's not the blusey song Kooper envisioned. But I really think it's not
a blues song in the first place. But, hey, who am i to argue with a legend lol?

I wrote a song that made the charts.. it was interpreted by the covering artist, the media, and the public as a love song assuming to the songwriters loved one .....🤫🤭...😉😉... When in fact I wrote it about the uncreative suits , the industry decision making fascists in the music industry at the time ... Gotta love the written word.. 👏 🖊 ✏️📝🖌✏️📖 💻

I like the lewis version much better. It moves and great singing. It is a good thing Al never tried to promote the song. It was a good move to let Gary have it.
Gross is a masterful interviewer and Kooper is a straight shooter. I enjoyed this.
One of the guys that's very underrated I ask people who is all Cooper and they look at me and say all the guy that says school's out for summer no Al Cooper

Great story. Love to hear him talk about piano/organ. I know the keyboard he is talking about. The Hammond B-3 was difficult to get fully started because of the complex mechanical motor involved in the instrument's tone-wheel. The instrument was difficult to simply move across the room, let alone out on tours. It's amazing how they make it, a digital instrument, that went from 408 pounds to 49 pounds and still sounds so great. Kooper sounds great on anything you put out in front of him. Thanks for posting. Al Kooper statement about Sly/Silvester Stewart really shows what a genuine artist/human being he is. It was impressive the way he stood up for Sly, Because pretty much the world did write Sly off. Al Kooper has worn many hats as producer, songwriter, musician, etc. And done them with quality, But the music industry is relentless and in his book he relates that it was and is a hard road. Yet among all that he stands up for a fellow musician who has had very hard times. This show was an interview about AL Kooper and there are some artists that would have told you in the 3rd person how wonderful they are and would never elaborate about any one but themselves every chance they get. Not so with AL Kooper. If he never did anything else but the Super Session Album he would have still have accomplished an enormus amount.
