Multiple Attack Lines • Stockton Fire

  • On January 27, 2017, Stockton Firefighters responded to a working structure fire in the 1100 block of East Washington. The single-story Victorian home with full basement is indicative of the neighborhood. Though boarded up, squatters frequent these houses and basements. Even though it appears 'fully involved,' crews committed to extinguish the first floor fire in order to save possible life in the basement.
    Fire crews on scene pulled multiple hoselines in order to attack the fire through the front door. An unconventional remodeled layout, and heavy fire conditions hindered the first-in hoselines ability to immediately extinguish the front rooms of the house. A change in strategy and tactics required 2 1/2 inch hoselines deployed and flowed from the exterior. Basic strategy and tactics indicates that opposing hoselines should not be flowed toward each other. (ie:) The line in the back could not flow into the house until the firefighters in the front had backed out. Crews carefully coordinated the attack.
    Firefighters were able to safely manage the fire. No victims were found in the structure, and crews worked carefully to avoid injury. The Stockton Fire Department consists of 12 Engines, 3 Trucks, 2 Battalion Chiefs, and 1 Operator. These 51 firefighters protect more than 300,000 people, and respond to more than 42,000 calls a year- including an average of one working structure fire a day. We are proud to serve and protect the citizens and City of Stockton, California.
    We thank you for your views, support, feedback, and comments. Comments that contain profanity, incite controversy, or are intended to 'troll' will be deleted. This video is intended to educate the public on what Stockton Firefighters must encounter- not host a platform for people to argue about personal issues or the fire service.

    Around 1953 I was going home for lunch and seen an old wooden tower on fire and SFD was on its way. I was always interested in the fire department. I was 16 and helped with pulling hoses and other things till a ladder slide off of a building next to the fire. Yes I got hurt right along with 2 other firemen. I was sent a letter from then Fire Chief Lyle Stevens thanking me for the help. I became a volunteer firemen in Nevada County, Rough and Ready VFD and made chief in 4 years and continued for 22 more years. That Stockton incident has always been with me. Enjoyed your filming of the Jan. 27, 2017 fire.

    An abandoned building with a basement and no tenable space for victims upon arrival, an offensive fire fight seems to be outside of a solid risk management profile. They put it out, their bravery is unquestioned. I’m glad we aren’t talking about this one on a NIOSH LODD report. Can vs. should are two separate actions. We can do lots of brave things as firefighters, but should we needs to be challenged regularly, without emotion, without ego. Cheers, glad everyone made it out.

      What Mr.Doobysm said was certainly very valid. Nothing inside of that house was alive, so why such an aggressive interior push? Could have gotten the same results without putting anyone's life at risk. I have nothing but the utmost respect for this department after watching their videos, but this one struck me as a bit reckless.

      It means to spread it out on the ground so it doesn't kink. U.S. firefighters use flat rubber lined canvas style hose so they can carry more hose. This is folded into various compartments or "beds". Once it is pulled out, the folds tend to remain and that prevents the water from flowing efficiently.

      bunker108 When Dispatch says Company it means that the engine and the truck are both going. For example she says company 2 and company 3, meaning engine 2 and truck 2, engine 3 and truck 3. She says company so it's saves her some air time in stead of saying Engine 2, Truck 2, Engine 3, Truck 3 since they are housed in the same station. Company just means both the Engine and Truck are going.

      The probationary 'flaked the hose for the second line.' As in second hoseline. 'Flake' is a term associated with rope, but can also be used for hoselines. Flake: 'lay (a rope) in loose coils in order to prevent it from tangling.'

    • @lindanwfirefighter4973
      @lindanwfirefighter4973 7 років тому +6

      ducky2323 because along with the water the hose push out they push hot air and fire. One hose would be pushing heat and fire at the other crews. It also makes it difficult to not disturb the thermal layering within the structure. It effects air flow. It does a lot of things that make it difficult to guess what the fire will do in the next min. Fire behaviour and understanding it helps prevent firefighter deaths.
