Organic soil does have some trace elements, like copper, magnesium, iron etc. that coco coir lacks, and these DO contribute to taste and overall crop health. On the other hand, coco coir is a LOT more sustainable than peat moss (main component of commeril potting mixes), and water retention versus oxygen availability is really great, which is very important in the germination stage of any crop and especially microgreens. I am using a 50/50 mix of buffered coco coir and organic soil, and though my overall weight is reduced slightly vs pure coco, I am getting better germination and taste vs pure soil. But I have to admit I am 'cheating': I use a self-made nutrient solution based on Bokashi Juice, so I have a million+ of little bacterial helpers in each tray that contribute to the quality and health of my product. I firmly believe that if your soil is alive, your product will be better.
I just found you guys a couple of days ago and I thank you for all these experiments. Excellent work and a great service for all of us working at developing and refining our techniques. Thank you!!
I use a non organic soil that I buy from Home Depot and I add a bit of coconut coir to it and I use kelp as my nutrient solution and I get awesome results every time. ❤️🇨🇦
😄Thank you so much for the Feedback Paul LeMay! We appreciate your support! We love your recipe for success...is it difficult to grow there in Ontario? Nice to hear that Home Depot is available to you...we've had folks complain about a lack of Home Depots nearby!!!
Thank you for sharing this video, please try in future videos to show the roots, because I noticed that the coco coir inhibits roots growth a little bit vs the soil. Thanks again
Great suggestion! We actually noticed that also when we went to compost the mediums. The soil had a great root structure and the coco coir was quite a bit behind.

Coco coir is not only cheaper, but it seems like an ideal source (re: spent microgreen mats) of material for composting into black potting soil (it even satisfies the 50:50 brown green balancing. Do, if you compost, the coir not only pays for itself if you ordinarily buy potting mix, but it's a free upgrade for microgreens.
since coco coir is basically with no nutrients it is something like hydroponics in the end cause you use ocean solution. It is going to take some time until soil and sun will be fully replaceable :)

I am new to micro greens and these are just my thoughts... A large portion of the Burpee organic potting mix is coconut coir... It says it on the front of the bag. It most likely also contains some peat moss. I would find it doubtful that it contains any true "soil" or dirt. My theory is that the diffence in taste, and better taste performance by Burpee's might be due to the different fertilizers... Ocean Solution vs. composted chicken manure, feather meal and potash. I would love to see that tested. I started growing my first microgreens 6 days ago, after binge watching your videos for 2 weeks. I appreciate your detailed analysis. I am using coco coir (1.7lbs) with Organic Garden Tone (Feather meal, poultry manure, bone meal, alfalfa meal potash, 4T) mixed in. I am trying my first batches (brocolli, red acre cabbage, pea chutes and cilantro) without PH balance.

I just bought several large bags of Burpee Organic from Tractor Supply. There were quite a few large twigs and wood chips, unlike what I found with the smaller bags. Did you have this experience? If so did you have to sift it before using?
Well ... I have been using way too much coconut coir. I started 2 trays with 3 cups each today. I can’t wait to see how they turn out! You two are the reason I’m so successful! Thanks so much!

Hi! I’m just starting to explore growing and would love to know your thoughts about the trays you’re using in this video as they are a bit cheaper than the 1020 trays :) I’m planning to grow for my family, probably 10 trays at a time. Thanks for creating these videos, very helpful!
First of all, thank you so much for taking the time to make all of the videos that are so valuable for many of us! I did not see ALL of your videos yet (but I saw many already…) and I have a question concerning the use of fertilizer in general, especially during bottom feeding. When you feed through the bottom, basically the roots are in the liquid fertilizer and a part of the fertilizer will be sucked up into the grow medium, correct me if I am wrong. I would call this “semi-hydroponics”. My question is: did you ever use or experiment with adding Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) to the liquid fertilizer? H2O2 adds extra oxygen to the mix and helps plant roots absorb nutrients better. It also discourages unwanted bacteria and fungi that may be lurking in the bottom tray or on the roots. The last 2 months I have done a lot of testing (Masterblend /Coco Coir on very small scale) and I have the impression that it makes a (positive) difference but I am not an expert and for sure not as knowledgeable as you two, for that my question. Of course if you would use soil you could still add the H2O2 to the water. Thanks in advance and again thank you for all the info you are showing us.
thanks for the vids guys, wasjut debating on what medium to go with. I was leaning towards soil ( like i used years ago) but all the cool kids use coir.

But it may be that "dirt" just has stuff that hydroponics can't contain. Who knows? not me. But I bet you can figure it out over time and I'll get my popcorn :)
Lol, great suggestion! Yeah, we’re actually playing with some worm castings and other nutrient additives to the coco to see if we get some similar taste! So far, we have some promising results with worm castings on growth and in a few days we can taste it to see how it turns out!

Nice videos guys. I appreciate them. The light ones were especially interesting considering the opinions other people have that 1-2 lights is enough for a shelf. I find it really silly when I see others compare potting mix with coco coir, without added nutrients. Not a fair comparison at all and a waste of time really.
Love watching these videos. If you have any of the Roots Organics Microgreens soil left I'd like to see a showdown between the Burpee's and Roots. Also like to see if Burpee's with Ocean Solution actually produces different results.
yeah, I make my own soil on site from components gathered from my meadows. for about the same effort as a buyer would do to order it from halfway across the continent.
😄Thank you so much for the Feedback Chante Hayward! We appreciate your support! Glad to hear you're concerned with end results of flavor...we just finished our Microgreens Cookbook and that is how we feel too!
Saw the 4 trays and thought that you were doing a coco with ocean solution and one with tap and a soil with ocean solution and one with tap. Wonder if the ocean solution would add any macro nutrients that aren’t in the soil? Maybe
🙂 Good question...all plants pull their environment into themselves, and of course the Ocean Solution is intended to and will add macro nutrients for growth via the soil...the harvest should have more chance to provide more nutrients as well...maybe!

You guys are the only MG farmers I follow that exclusively use Coco coir, which I also like to use. But I hear that some varieties, like sunflowers, are really stubborn when it comes to coco. Have you found the same for some varieties and if so do you need to play with the nutrients or other factors to get the results you want? Thank you!!!
Usually, with coco coir, we have great results. You just have to be careful not to oversaturate and have air flow. 🙂 Thank you so much for the Feedback Ron! We appreciate your support!
Hello, i want to start my own grow, i know everything about the light and other things but i dont know what nutritiens did i should use for? What is exactly in water which you feeding your microgreens? I live in Poland and i dont know what to tell in shop to buy it :D And the second question, is the medium 100% coconut or is it a mix with something? Please let me know, i will be very thankfull guys. Hope my english isnt bad enough to understand what i mean. Thanks!

The older I get the less energy I have. I'm looking for a national forest I can throw some seeds out and see what I get. Harvest some and let some go to seed.
Basically it's the timing of the watering that creates the problem. Either I am sleeping or have an appointment that doesn't allow me to keep on schedule.
🙂Makes you wish for a system that auto circulates the nutrients and a system to control the lights at the same time...then you'd be set...if only!!! How close is that forest???
What was the quantity of Ocean Solution did you buy to calculate the cost per tray - was it the gallon bottle or 32oz bottle? Did you include shipping cost for these to your site and is that reflected in the cost per tray?

If I were the customer and the better flavor is only 60 cents more for the entire tray? No brainer better flavor also means better nutrition, and probably better shelf life.
😄Thank you so much for the question!! Best way I can start the equation is that imagine we use about 7cups per 1020tray. The Burpee you can see the amount in the bag but, as for the brick of coco coir...it expands before you measure things out per brick...it varies some. Happy Spring 2021 Ilhom R!

Depends on how good you are at growing and selling either... I’ve never grown cannabis, but if it gets legalized to grow in Texas, I’d love to grow some to try out. From what I understand, cannabis cultivation is very tricky. Microgreens are really easy... and they are legal everywhere. So for barrier to entry, I’d say that microgreens are more profitable. If you have trained in growing cannabis and you can do it legally, it can be very profitable from what I understand. Again though, microgreens are much easier to grow and you can turn crop into cash in under two weeks compared to cannabis which is generally 3 months to a year before that cash comes back.

You could try that burpees potting soil vs the burpees organic coco coir. That would be a more accurate test. In coco/hydro, harvests (of whatever, micro, garden plants, cannabis) don't taste as good as soil. The soil enriches the flavor in cannabis but hydro produces bigger yields, takes less time, and is easier. The experiments that you guys are doing are great. Nobody else really does them and it saves a lot of time for people who are learning microgreen growers... I grew cannabis for 10 years and I still learn a lot from all your videos. Thanks. Here's a link to the burpee's coco coir that I'm talking about: www.amazon.ca/Burpee-Garden-Coir-Quart-Organic/dp/B078GQPRX4/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=burpee+organic+potting+mix&qid=1618540112&sr=8-3 I would like also to see a vs between the burpees and promix organic seed starter because promix is so well-known: www.amazon.ca/Premier-Horticulture-1008041RGCE-Organic-Starter/dp/B01MA52ALI/ref=sr_1_9_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=burpee+organic+potting+mix&qid

Actually, Ocean Solution 2-0-3 Liquid Fertilizer is much more than just water with a pinch of sea salt. It's a carefully formulated organic fertilizer made from deep-ocean water and includes: - 90 naturally occurring minerals: These minerals are harvested from deep-ocean water, providing a wide range of essential nutrients to plants. - Nitrogen and Potassium: These are added to the solution and are OMRI listed for organic use, ensuring they meet organic farming standards. These elements work together to promote healthier plant growth and restore depleted soils, making it far more nutrient-rich than just water and salt. You can also go to their website and read this too. oceansolution.com/product/oceansolution-203/
@@OnTheGrow Sure, but do you know how are "harvested" from the ocean water, and how is called the product after harvesting? 🙂 Also do you know what thing has half the Mendeleev table in it? 🙂 About the NPK do you know how much the solution 2-0-3 endup after diluting it from 1 to 100 gallons? For the vast majority of the chemical products, the cost of the product itself is around 1 to 3 cents per dollar, in this case is even significantly less. Rest is advertising, sponsorship, influencers and packaging. No matter the Deep ocean or Brazilian rain forest or the Depth of the African jungle advertising, you can't avoid basic chemistry and math. If you don't have "deep ocean minerals" 😅 try just for experiment pinch of himalayan rock salt (not the fake one painted in pink) and dash of household 10% ammonia.
😄Thank you so much for the request...would you Be~Leaf we're about to do just that this Spring 2021!!! FAISAL KHAN! Stay tunes...we appreciate your support!

🙂Can't wait to hear how it turns out Brandon Crawford! Let us know if you have any questions!! Have you visited www.onthegrow.net lately??? Our Microgreens Master Book can pre preorder if you're interested in our moblie units BluePrints.
Nice videos guys. I appreciate them. The light ones were especially interesting considering the opinions other people have that 1-2 lights is enough for a shelf.
I find it really silly when I see others compare potting mix with coco coir, without added nutrients. Not a fair comparison at all and a waste of time really.
would you mind sharing how do you store your extra hyraded coco?
I would also like to know this! I’m concerned about mold/other contaminants
Great video!:)
Thank you for the support! We appreciate it! 🤗🌱🌱
Love watching these videos. If you have any of the Roots Organics Microgreens soil left I'd like to see a showdown between the Burpee's and Roots. Also like to see if Burpee's with Ocean Solution actually produces different results.
Great suggestions! We will do both 🤗🌱🌱
Love the hair
Thank you for watching Brian Nason!!! 😄 Glad you enjoyed it!
yeah, I make my own soil on site from components gathered from my meadows.
for about the same effort as a buyer would do to order it from halfway across the continent.
Great video. Thanks for the info. Unrelated, I simp for you.
Try a 1 cup coco and 2 cups soil. It saves you money but still gives the same amazing flavour.
Don't worry, you guys always get a thumbs up.
😀 Oby-1 Again...we really benefit from your support and nice compliments!!! Have you visited our newest website...

Do you wash and dry the microgreens before you sell them? Thanks for sharing! Nice video!
We used to wash them before sale, but we no longer do. We put labeling that advises the customer to wash the produce before use. We don’t really do sales anymore
michael paulissen 😀We are so excited to announce that both our Microgreens Master Book and our first Microgreens Cookbook will be available very soon!
😃Please visit our new website at 0nthegrow.net for info and early sign up!!!
Wonder if you get bug problems with soil? I tried it after using coco, and immediately got bugs...
🙂Thank you Paul Dacus for the bug question! 😄 We grow mostly in a highly controlled area...we have a mobile grow trailer. Visit www.onthegrow.net and you can find a link to our Microgreens Master Book and there's a Bonus BluePrint and other diagrams to explain!!
What about your own Verma compost? Seems like great medium, great nutrients and way cheaper?
ECO-PIE 😉Hello again from "On The Grow"...We apologize for not being timely on your last request or comment!!! We've been blessed to have so many welcoming responses as well as questions from the "MicroGreen Community".
😄Fear not for the future...we have two new grow team members here to assist with all aspects of your grow needs and questions. Please feel free to jump back in to sharing and looking to us for assistance!!
How about increasing the Ocean solution concentration? Do you only use the soil one time like the cococore? I'm a newbe, Thanks, love your videos.
🙂Thank you so much for the support Jeff Penso!! We are going to be making new content soon! 😄 We mix the Ocean Solution as prescribed and the Coco coir is a one timer.
Where do you purchase your coco coir ?
You guys are the only MG farmers I follow that exclusively use Coco coir, which I also like to use. But I hear that some varieties, like sunflowers, are really stubborn when it comes to coco. Have you found the same for some varieties and if so do you need to play with the nutrients or other factors to get the results you want? Thank you!!!
Usually, with coco coir, we have great results. You just have to be careful not to oversaturate and have air flow. 🙂 Thank you so much for the Feedback Ron! We appreciate your support!
can i also have Coco coir and rain water? cause rainwater has a pH of 5,8-6. I think that`s thats the best way for watering? Without Ocean Solution
Thanks!
Would be interested to see if the pro mix organic has similar results!
😄Thank you so much for the Feedback Chris Jeffery! We appreciate your support! We'll check on that...since we were surprised by these results ...who knows now!
I wonder, where do you buy your coconut coir that it's only $0.28 per tray?
Have you all ever used CaliMag from GH? It's a calcium/magnesium supplement.
We have tried it before, but I don't think we saw any impressive results. We will have to try it again!

Can we use seaweed extract instead of ocean solution 2-0-3 ?
Thank you Samaksh Patidar 🥳 We really appreciate your support!! What are the suggested uses??? Have you gotten any success stories to share???
What was the quantity of Ocean Solution did you buy to calculate the cost per tray - was it the gallon bottle or 32oz bottle? Did you include shipping cost for these to your site and is that reflected in the cost per tray?
Thank you so much for the support John Drain!! We are going to be making new content soon! 😄 😉John Drain Looking for seeds...hers another link...

Hello. Where are you from? you sell microgreen seeds
which coco coir do you use to get .28 cents per tray?
una pregunta:
logran vender todos sus productos?
o solo es agricultura urbana de consumo propio ?
los germinados los venden?
🙂We can sell at Farmer's Markets and grocers are selling them also...are getting into the business? Thank you so much for the support Biologo Hernan!! We are going to be making new content soon! 😄
Hey what if you soak too much choir can you let the rest sit moist?
HAVE YOU TRIED SOIL PLUS NUTRIENTS OR IS THAT TOO MUCH FOR FOR MICROGREENS
We are about to try some tests like that!! Great question, we will let you know soon.
We appreciate your support!
If I were the customer and the better flavor is only 60 cents more for the entire tray?
No brainer better flavor also means better nutrition, and probably better shelf life.
So, how many tray uses do you get from each pack of the the organic soil Burpee and the Coco Coir?
😄Thank you so much for the question!! Best way I can start the equation is that imagine we use about 7cups per 1020tray. The Burpee you can see the amount in the bag but, as for the brick of coco coir...it expands before you measure things out per brick...it varies some. Happy Spring 2021 Ilhom R!
Good
🙂Thank you so much for the Feedback Krishi thottam! We appreciate your support! Hope you are enjoying breaking into Spring 2021...we're planting inside and out too!!!

which is more profitable to grow microgreens vs. cannabis plants?
@@OnTheGrow thanks so much. what about microgreens vs. mushrooms? are mushrooms better because they don't need so much light?
😀 Chaz Lon Again...we really benefit from your interesting questions!! For now we're focused on Microgreens only and recipes in use them in.😄 Have you visited our newest website

I think it is possible to dry it out and sift through 1/4" screen into a wheelbarrow.

Can you do an ocean solution vs promix video please
Thats a great suggestion! I'll add it to our list :)
Superb video
Thank you for watching FAISAL KHAN!!! 😄 Glad you enjoyed it! We put so many more on our You Tube channel if you have more time!!!
Thanks.
Here's a link to the burpee's coco coir that I'm talking about:

I would like also to see a vs between the burpees and promix organic seed starter because promix is so well-known:

“Organic soil”
День добрый.Почему субтиты ваших видео не могу на русский язык перевести?
🙂Are you using google translate???
OceanSolution is just water with pinch of sea salt in it. In it's diluted form, basically has nothing in it, except water.
Actually, Ocean Solution 2-0-3 Liquid Fertilizer is much more than just water with a pinch of sea salt. It's a carefully formulated organic fertilizer made from deep-ocean water and includes:
- 90 naturally occurring minerals: These minerals are harvested from deep-ocean water, providing a wide range of essential nutrients to plants.
Please go for Fenugreek
😄Thank you so much for the request...would you Be~Leaf we're about to do just that this Spring 2021!!! FAISAL KHAN! Stay tunes...we appreciate your support!
Buy your soil from a hydroponic store. The soil will be a lot cheaper
